Muslim leaders thanked the Secretary for his commitment in solving social issues that arose in the past while protecting the interests of the community, says the Ministry of Defence Sri Lanka.
Secretary to the MOD Gotabaya Rajapaksa participated at a traditional ‘Iftar’ ceremony at the Hotel Ramada in Colombo last evening (01st August). The Iftar was hosted by the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development.
“Rajapaksa’s initiative in organizing such a religious gathering with the presence of invitees from different cultural and religious backgrounds came under praise from all those present. They commended the initiative of the Secretary in facilitating an environment where peaceful coexistence among all religious and ethnic groups can thrive.” MOD said in its official website.
Secretary MOD sat down together with Islamic religious dignitaries and scholars who had arrived from many parts of the country to break fast in keeping with traditional customs.

Islamic extremism taking control of Indonesia? Canadian author Irshad Manji led a small discussion for progressive liberal Muslims and suddenly out of the nowhere they group was physically attacked by Muslim extremists who beat many of the students.
JAKARTA: Indonesia’s national police are considering banning a performance next month by pop diva Lady Gaga amid threats of violence by Islamic extremists.
It follows an attack by religious hardliners on lesbian Muslim author Irshad Manji prompted deep soul searching in a country regarded as the Islamic world’s most moderate.
The threats and attacks are part of a trend in Indonesia for extremists to bully and intimidate anyone who does not subscribe to their hard line doctrine. Police rarely act against them.
A book launch by Ms Manji, a Canadian author and Islamic reformist, was stopped by police in Jakarta this month for security reasons, and then, last Wednesday, in the university town of Yogyakarta, thugs violently broke up a discussion and attacked its 150 participants.
Ms Manji’s associate, Emily Rees, was bashed with an iron bar by men wearing motorcycle helmets and masks. She was among three women hospitalised.
Ms Manji was discussing her latest book, Allah, Liberty and Love, which urges reformist Muslims to show ”moral courage” in the face of intimidation. She said she was shielded from the attackers by ”a pyramid of women”.
Ms Rees got a badly bruised arm and said the men were yelling ”Where is Manji? Where is Manji?” as they smashed windows, crockery and computers and tore up copies of the book.
The Majelis Mujahidin Council claimed responsibility and other extremists including the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) and Muslim Defenders Team have turned their attention to Lady Gaga.
The head of the front, Habib Rizieq Syihab, said the performer wanted to ”establish the evil Lucifer empire in Indonesia”. He threatened to stop her at Jakarta airport or mobilise 30,000 members to attack her June 3 stadium concert.
Indonesia has all but rid itself of its homegrown terrorist threat but violent rhetoric and religiously motivated physical assault has increased dramatically. Ms Manji visited Indonesia peacefully in 2008 but says it is ”going in the direction more of Pakistan than that of a democracy”.
”Four years ago, Indonesia was open enough and tolerant enough that FPI supporters and a transsexual could be there at my discussion. They disagreed strongly with each other but, as far as I know, everyone went home safely. That is simply inconceivable today.”
Foreign visitors are not the sole target. A Christian congregation in Bogor has been prevented for years by local Muslim hardliners from building a church, despite a Supreme Court ruling in its favour. Shiite Muslims and followers of the Ahmadiyya sect are increasingly victims of attack, and an atheist is on trial for blasphemy.
The FPI chief called at a recent public rally for the ”secretive assassination” of liberal Muslims as part of his followers’ ”freedom of expression”.
Liberal Muslim academic Luthfi Assyaukanie said the hardliners shared the view of terrorists of an earlier generation but used different tactics. But it was ”only a matter of time” until people were killed because ”the intensity is growing”.
Radical groups act with impunity from police, who, rather than enforce Indonesia’s constitutional right of freedom of speech, prefer to cite ”community opposition” and ”security”, and then shut down controversial events. National police spokesman Saud Nasution said Lady Gaga’s concert had so far been denied a permit, on the recommendation of police, even though 40,000 tickets have been sold.

Maulana Wahiduddin Khan of Islamic Centre, has written a nice book entitled ‘God Arises’. (Published by Maktaba al Risala, c-29 Nizamuddin West, New Delhi,1987) in which he has collected the evidence of science and the saying of the scientists on the existence of Almighty God. He has narrated an inspiring incident in this book, which I shall relate. Allama Inayatullah Mashriqi had visited England in the year 1909. On a Sunday when it was raining hard, he met Sir James Jeans, the famous astronomer of the Cambridge University, going to a church with a Bible clutched under his arm. Mr. Inayatullah Khan expressed his astonishment that a person of such a universal fame like him is going to pray in a church. Sir James Jeans asked Mr. Inayatullah Khan to come to his house and have tea with him in the evening. Accordingly, Mr. Inayatullah Khan went to his house in the evening. Sir James Jeans was lost in his thoughts, he asked What your question was? But without waiting for an answer, he gave an inspiring description of the creation of the celestial bodies, their motions and the astonishing order to which they adhere. His voice and his movements clearly showed that he was deeply impressed by the Power and Majesty of God. He said You know Inayatullah Khan when I behold God’s marvelous feats of creation, my whole being trembles in awe at His majesty. When I go to church I bow my head and say, ‘Lord, how great you are’ and not only my lips, but every particle of my body joins in uttering these words. I obtain incredible peace and joy from my prayer. Compared to others, I receive a thousand times more fulfillment from my prayers. So tell me, Inayatullah Khan, now do you understand why I go to Church?
Hearing this Mr. Inayatullah Khan told Sir James Jeans that his words reminded him of a verse of the Holy Qura’n which he would like to quote if permitted. Sir James Jeans replied: Of course. Mr. Inayatullah Khan then quoted the following verse:
” And among the mountains are streaks, white and red, of diverse hues and others raven black; And in like manner, there are men and beasts and cattle, of various colours. Only those of His servants who possess knowledge fear Allah.”(35:27,28)
Sir James Jeans was deeply impressed by these words of the Holy Qura’n he exclaimed:
”What was that? It is those who have knowledge who fear God. Wonderful! How extraordinary! It has taken me fifty years of continual study and observation to realize this fact. Who taught it to Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)? Is this really in the Qura’n? If so, you can record my testimony that the Qura’n is an inspired Book. Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was illiterate. He could not have learnt this immensely important fact on his own. God must have taught it to him. Incredible! How extraordinary! ” (God Arises p.215 with reference to Nuqoosh Shakhsiyat (i.e.; Impression of Personalities) ( p .1208 -1209)
In short, the words Only those of His servants who possess knowledge fear Allah present a profound truth. The study of the universe not only leads us to the conclusion that God exists but also inculcates the love of God (Qura’n 2:164-166) and the fear of God.

“Have you got your justice?” Well, they’ve stopped the partying where they use to bring all kinds of men and women to the home every weekend and they’ve removed the car park sale which they had in front of my house which brought all kinds of people daily but still these two men tend to make noise when they are talking at times along with their families. They also have a habit of staring. It’s really irritating. To answer your question, justice has been served partially, about 60%.
Another thing Alan, what I don’t get is why someone (owner) would buy a house in our neighborhood and not live here but instead keep a thug like looking man on the top section and rent the bottom section to a man with a family who tends to bring people to his home at odd hours of the night and get a kick out of making noise.
Something is just not right Alan. I also discovered the owner is related to a Minister, the Minister was accused of harassing and intimidating a judge some time back. So obviously these people have no regard for the law.
The owner even promised the IP he would tell the tenants to leave immediately (and that was in February) but still they occupy the house.
The law I wrote about has to be implemented – on the spot fines when there is ample proof someone is guilty.If that still doesn’t work then send them to jail.

When Allah first ordered Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.) and all Muslims to offer the daily Pray, they were required to do it facing Jerusalem. This was the practice in Mecca and continued in Medina until the seventeenth month after Hijrat.
In Medina, the Jews also said their prayers facing Jerusalem. They did not like the fact that the Muslims had the same Qiblah as they did, and tried to use this fact to discredit Islam and Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.). They said to the Muslims, “Mohammad claims to have a religion whose laws supersede all other previous laws, yet he does not have an independent Qiblah, and offers his prayers facing the Qiblah of the Jews.”Masjid-e-Dhul Qiblatain
After Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.) received this news he used to come out at night and look into the sky awaiting the revelation from Allah about this matter. The following verse was revealed at this time:
“Many a time We have seen you turn your face towards heaven. We will make you turn towards a Qiblah that will please you…” Surah al-Baqarah, 2:144
One day, while Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.) and the Muslims were praying together, the command came from Allah to change the Qiblah from Jerusalem to the Holy Ka’ba in Mecca. After Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.) had already completed half of the noon prayer, the Angel Gabriel (A.S.) communicated to him the command of Allah.
He held the hand of Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.) and turned him towards the Holy Ka’ba in Mecca. Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.) at once changed his direction in the middle of pray. Hi cousin, Imam Ali (A.S.), followed this change immediately. The other Muslims were confused by this action and only a few followed the example of Imam Ali (A.S.).
The mosque where this happened is known as “Masjid-e-Dhul Qiblatain” which means “The Mosque with the Two Qiblahs”. This mosque still exists in Medina today.

Let’s start with first principles. An Ifthar is just that; an ifthar, where you break the fast. It doesn’t matter who hosts it or where it is hosted. Nor are Muslims expected to find out who is invited and who is not. Islam is not about who’s hobnobbing with whom! So to me it does not matter whether it was political stooges or pseudo Islamic scholars who made up the invitees list.
I am happy that the DS took it upon himself to invite us, Muslims for ifthar. It would have been been a great opportunity for him to mix with Muslims and find out about the challenges faced by the community. My fervent hope is that the meeting would help put in place a process for dialog and would be a first step to allay the fears of the majority community. The DS entertains the same fears and apprehensions about the Muslim community as do the majority of Sinhalese. This mistrust arises out of lack of intimate knowledge of Islam and the Muslim way of life. I am sure the DS would have been a keen student and would have had many questions answered.
It also sends a strong message to the BBS types, that the Muslims too now have the ear of the DS. It is also a strong political message to hate mongers in the political realm.
I am sure many of you will say that I am a bit wet behind my ears! I am not hear to attribute motives behind the move. I see a thaw in relations and would grab it with both hands.
I say so because Muslims should not fall into the trap set by extremists on either side of the divide. Not to have attended would have been an insult to a leader of the country, an act that Islam frowns upon.

The ruling family have part muslim ancestry. Even J.R was said to have muslim ancestry.

Though it is commonly not known, the DS and MOD have been taking steps to settle the various issues through discussion and negotiation with the parties concerned. By doing so they have prevented many serious problems from occurring for muslims. So I see no problem in anyone attending an iftar hosted by the DS. I think it is good sign that the Govt is prepared to speak to muslims and consider their problems.
Islam is a religon of peace and moderation. Nothing can be achieved by fighting and abusing people. It is far better to grasp the hand when it is outstretched than to turn away with pride and arrogance. In this month of Ramadhan we should make peace with all.
When you are greeted with a greeting, greet in return with what is better than it, or (at least) return it equally. Certainly, Allâh is Ever a Careful Account Taker of all things. (4:86 )
“Repel evil with that which is best: We are well-acquainted with the things they say.” (23:96)
“Nor can goodness and evil be equal. Repel (evil) with that is better: Then will he between whom and you was hatred become as if he were your friend and intimate!”(41:34)
Islam also teaches us to obey the laws of the land and be loyal to the rulers.
Sayyiduna Abd Allah ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: “It is necessary upon a Muslim to listen to and obey the ruler, as long as one is not ordered to carry out a sin. If he is commanded to commit a sin, then there is no adherence and obedience.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 2796 & Sunan Tirmidhi)
