Govt Issues Stern Warning Against ‘Great Heroes Day’ Remembrance

The police last night warned that legal action will be taken against anyone who organize public events to celebrate or commemorate Maaveerar Naal (Great Heroes Day) which falls on Friday (November 27).

H Day Tamil LTTEAnyone holding public events in support of the LTTE, will be taken to courts since the LTTE is a banned organization in Sri Lanka police spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said.

Despite the threats by Police, posters appeared in the Jaffna peninsula and parts of the north, calling people to celebrate the Maaveerar day.

Posters which said “Let’s commemorate our hero’s”, “Our aim is Tamil Eealam” and others with the late LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran’s picture and LTTE flag appeared in several places.

Several banners and posters calling for the people to commemorate the fallen Tamil heroes appeared in the Jaffna University premises as well.

Meanwhile Northern Provincial Council (NPC) member M.K. Sivajilingham had told media that the public have been urged to commemorate slain LTTE members on Friday to mark the LTTE heroes’ week.

He said that anyone has a right to commemorate those killed during the war even if they are LTTE members. Sivajilingam had said that he had urged the public to commemorate the Tamils killed during the war in a peaceful manner without raising the LTTE flag.

During the LTTE’s heyday the Maveerar day and the ensuing hero’s week was celebrated in a grand manner with LTTE military parades and a customary speech by Prabhakaran in which he spelled out the intended path of the organization.

It will be better for the government along with the new Tamil political leadership to downplay the so called Maveerers achievements. They must distribute information to every household about the negatives of the so called MaVeerars. The infighting that saw many horrors unleashed on maveerer’s by maveerars would be a good place to start with. Rajan Hooles expose’of Prabakarans megolomaniacal torture and killings of persons associated with TELO, EPRLF etc will be a good place to start.

Bringing the jackboot to such celebrations, however offensive it is will be counterproductive in the long run. Education and reconciliation will be the only way forward. Racists of all creeds must be sidelined as much as possible.

“They must distribute information to every household about the negatives of the so called MaVeerars. “

They must distribute information to every household about the Maha Mootal Veeras who caused so much agony for them s that Mootal Veeran VP Could Reign like a king, just like Mahinda Rajapaksa was trying.

Tamils with common sense will get it,

Tamil mootals with no common sense, mootals, not get it, and will celebrate the anyway.

        Amarasiri,

“Tamils with common sense will get it”

        We do.

“Tamil mootals with no common sense, mootals, not get it, and will celebrate the anyway.”

Yes they will. This is also an opportunity to test how the government will react to provocations.

I hope that the security forces will look away unless there is major trouble.

Today there was a strike at Jaffna University because of the suicide of the Kokuvil student. Maybe another tomorrow.

What did make you to think that the leaflet was the work of authentic Tiger?

Can you not type and print such notices at home, at offices, at military camps, by Douglas’s comrades, Gota’s boys, ……………… ?

        Native Vedda,

Like the Ayer I also suspect that you don’t know about what goes on in Jaffna.

“What did make you to think that the leaflet was the work of authentic Tiger? Can you not type and print such notices at home, at offices, at military camps, by Douglas’s comrades, Gota’s boys, ……………… ?”

It is true that we don’t know who created and distributed the leaflets.

Who arranged and participated in the events today like the one in the Jaffna university temple? Outsiders trying to create problems or insiders commemorating? If we are lucky proud videos appear online.

The main news is that to my best knowledge everything was peaceful.

I did not see a single member of the security forces today. My assumption is that they were ordered to avoid conflict and stay at their bases or police stations.

As long as the Sinhalese government do not realise that it is Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalist Terror is the route cause of the creation of LTTE, there is no reconciliation or true peace in this island. It is sad on this day a student killed himself for the injustice for those who are in the Sinhalese jail unlawfully and inhumanly. How can you expect those who burnt 97000 books within few seconds will respect and reconcilation?

LTTE is a results of Dutches, Brits and then Chelvas, Sundaralinkams etc., and lately Amirthalinkams, Sambandan etc. LTTE is the brutal arm of Tamil chauvinism and nothing to do with so called “Buddhist Sinhala Fundalism” which is non existence. Ajit, you better read history instead of parroting NGO ideals.

At least among my Tamil friends the Maarveerar Naai is considered a day to hang their heads in shame as the day it destroyed their community with the killing of their leaders they had enormous respect for. Commemorating the LTTE is like commemorating ISIS for the senseless killing of hundreds of innocent people, mostly Muslims, ever a stupid ideology.

        Sylvia Haik

What did you exactly mean when you typed “Maarveerar Naai”?

“Commemorating the LTTE is like commemorating ISIS for the senseless killing of hundreds of innocent people, mostly Muslims, ever a stupid ideology.”

Whats the difference between JVP terrorists and LTTE terrorists? Its alright for JVP to remember its own psychopaths and not alright for the kith and kin of dead LTTE members.

Is it because all the JVP terrorist are/were Sinhala/Buddhists and all the LTTE terrorists are/were Tamils?

Let me have your sermon on ethics, morality, whats right and wrong, double standards, hypocrisy, bigotry, selective amnesia, us them and other, majority vs minority, Jihadhism …….

LTTE could be a banned organization but the dead young men and women are someone’s Father, Mother, Son, Daughter, Brother or Sister. Family has a right to moan a death or celebrate a life and this is also a process by which those left behind comes to terms with the loss.

The only exception is ape Sinhalayo celebrate equally brutal JVP annual April fools day.

Here is some observation by a JVP insider:

“JVP is more a religion than a political party. They have a cult mentality. It is a disease the JVP inherited from its birth. The party has been made divine. In this religious like backdrop, the persons who have left the party are considered as traitors who must be destroyed. When one is being followed with the purpose of being murdered, the victim also has to search for ways to safeguard himself. For example, when Nandana Marasinghe was killed, the others who shared similar ideas were compelled to seek the protection of the security forces. Therefore, this story of traitors has two sides.

“Those who died gave their lives for what they believed. We are still alive. There is a difference between what we say and what we do. Sacrificing one’s life for a common struggle is good. The persons who were in the struggle were of a different generation. Rebels both in the North and South taught us a lesson. Without building our lives in a revolutionary way, I don’t think a people’s movement or armed movement will succeed.

          Native Vedda,

I have nothing against peaceful celebrations or even demonstrations.

“The only exception is ape Sinhalayo celebrate equally brutal JVP annual April fools day.”

The JVP armed revolts are history.

You may remember how suspected members of the LTTE have been arrested in India in 2015. I don’t know what the Indian security forces and courts have decided to do with them but the fact is that they were arrested. If I remember correctly these arrests were in Tamil Nadu, Bangalore and Calicut.

There are many active LTTE supporters abroad and somebody has printed and spread posters in the NP.

You are not in Jaffna are you?

          Just wait and see.

        Prof. Siva Sankaran Sarma the Tamil wannabe, please note the following;

9/11 hijackers – CIA knew about it and let it happen. Insurance was increased by the owner of the 2 buildings 3 times few months before the attacks. Also while Osama who ordered the attacks was hiding in Pakistan/Afghanistan while the U.S., forces were attacking IRAQ. Also Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Chenney knew of the attacks way before the attacks were carried out. Not a single Jew died in the attacks. No plane wreckage was found at the Pentagon site, the plane which crashed in PA was shot down by U.S. airforce.

Dead Nazis – nobody attacked the Nazis, Nazis attacked everyone else and got killed. So tough luck for them.

So before you write crap, check your sources before you spew your racist nonsense.

If the Govt allows supporters of Rohana Wijeweera (JVP) to commemorate his birth/death it cannot practise double standards on VPs supporters
wishing to remember VP on November 27. In as much as there are only a fraction of the Sinhala Nation that can be identified as Wijeweera’s faithful supporters, so it is with the Tamil Nation.

Very clear discrimination based on caste. During the rule of LTTE this kind of behavior was banned and punished. You are lucky it is over.

Don’t forget to include Mullaitivu (July 1996), Elephant Pass (April 2000), ….. etc.

This mother has lost her husband and currently leading lonely life.

We are not talking about LTTE as an organisation here….this is about individual people who have been forced by the consecutive governments To fight against them by denying their basic rights purely because they belong to Tamil minority community!! What a shame!! Govt is still not realising the issue here and not addressing any of this even after 100,000 people have been murdered!! Shame on all previous and current Governments!!….None of these idiots realise the fault of their own and rectify those!!……Aren’t we all human beings…..why on earth these Srilankan governments aren’t treating all communities as equal citizens??? Million dollar question?? If that can be addressed, this issue can be put to rest!!

Allow me to take a different line.
Let our Tamil Brothers and Sisters remember their dead. Call it whatever they want.
The JVP every year Honor the death of Rohana W. Surely, it should be alright for the Tamils to honor their dead too.

Let us also work towards sorting our domestic issues politically. There are many, way finding recommendations made under different leaders. Let’s implement them.

I believe that parents of dead fighters do have a right to commemorate their departed children. However, if they are treated as heroes, that implies a notion that the parents consider their cause as being just.

The SL governments have condemned the separatists’ families and their rituals of celebrating “heroes” as unjust, largely due to the need for power gained from among the majority population rather than any nationalistic urge or sense of moral fairness.

This is clear from the different kinds of treatment of various big LTTE figures depending on their usefulness or influence wielded by them.

The more something is “banned” the more appeal it has among the “believers”. Therefore moderation should be urged, where low-key vigils are tolerated and no state oppression perpetuated on the minorities on Friday.

  • 1

Celebrating those who died for the tamil cause is different from celebrating those who committed mass murder of innocent Sinhala civilians. The suicide bombers’ actions against the SL military may be acceptable but not the atrocious killings of civilians. It is a shame that their heroic actions against the SL military were diminished by their killings of Sinhala civilians.

A general day of mourning for all those tamils who died in the conflict must be allowed by the SL government or else some extremists among the tamils will continue to celebrate Maveerar day which is seen by the Sinhalese and the Sinhala government as defiance.

  • 7
    1

The Sinhala Govt celebrates the killing of the Tamils as defeat of Terrorism. They celebrate it by parading the might of their army and navy and air force personnel and military hardware.

This show of their defence capability is not as a warning to a foreign enemy but believe me, as a warning/reminder to the two million Tamil minority citizens. Sri Lanka is the only country in the world to display its defence capability as a warning to its own citizens.

The second objective of this victory parade is to satisfy the ego of the Sinhala politicians and to keep the Sinhala racism burning.

Having said that, I am not in favour of Maaveerar Naal celebration and waving of the now defunct Tiger flag.

I am definitely in favour of a day of mourning in remembrance of all the Tamils killed during the Sinhala racist riots, killed during the internecine war among Tamil Groups and killed during the war running up to the mass scale bombing in the No Fire Zone

Perhaps it’s time to move forward.
My suggestion is for the Sri Lanka govt to drop it’s Victory Day celebration, for the Tamils to drop it’s Maaveerar Naal celebration. Instead I suggest that there is a single day of remembrance of all Sri Lankans, Tamils, Muslims, Sinhalese etc who have lost their lives in search of their Sri Lanka.

A sort of Sri Lanka poppy day. This will make a tremendous leap in reconciliation and contribute to perpetual unity and harmony.

    • 2
      0

A single day of remembrance by the whole country suggested by Rajash comes close to a mutually accepted formulae. But if it comes to this Tamils in the North-East will remember VP and his Boys and the Sinhala South will remember more the army that overcome the LTTE insurrection rather than JVP’s Wijeweera and his Boys.

as long as no LTTE flags are hoisted,no portraits of the murderer

The reality is tigers never killed any civilians or captured army. Gotha tricked Singhalese to believe that they killed civilians – government had power and resource , they can clone any one as guilty – happened in real life like in films. If Tamils wanted to morn maveerar day , what is the problem for Singhalese – Tamils are morning all over the world , why not in this poor srilanka – Singhalese should stop wasting their time in petty things like this and work harder to develop the country – we lacy people have nothing better to do. Singhalese and Tamils in the west never worry about this kind of petty things and they do not have free time for that either – please grow up and see the world without just eating giripath all the time.
