Hopper Drama II – The Inside Story: Ranil-Maithri Rift Rooted In Presidential Ambitions

The estrangement between President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe has its roots in the former’s desire to remain as President until 2025 and not the ‘crisis’ produced by the results of the local government elections where the parties led by both men suffered heavily.

Sajith and Sirisena | File photo

Colombo Telegraph reported in October 2017 that there were plans for Sirisena to continue as President beyond 2025, although he had pledged on numerous occasions that he would be a one-term president, that he would not contest another presidential election and even said there won’t be another such election.

This was when Dr Jayampathy Wickramaratne, MP and Chairman of the committee providing technical support to the constitution-making process told a group of Tamil expatriates in London that the Committee was agreeable to Sirisena being given a second term subject to him being elected through parliament.

According to Wickramaratne, it was a gesture of appreciation of a man who gave leadership to set the constitutional-reform ball rolling. He said that it amounts to a ‘phasing-out of the executive presidency.‘

The complete abolition will happen in 2025, not by promises, but through its scripting in the constitution, he said.

After being briefed on all this, President Sirisena had discussed the proposal with Wickremesinghe, who had rejected it. Wickremesinghe also objected to the constitutional reform packaged introduced by former president Chandrika Kumaratunga in 2000 over a similar transitional provision that would have allowed her to remain as President until 2005.

A dismayed Sirisena had told Wickremesinghe that this would compel him, Sirisena, to work as the leader of the SLFP and in terms of the interests of that party. Wickremesinghe had apparently said that as the leader of the SLFP it is entirely up to Sirisena to do what he believes is best for his party.

Following this, Shiral Laktilleka, one of the key advisors to Sirisena, had arranged a meeting between the President and Sajith Premadasa, a longtime aspirant to the position of UNP Leader.

Colombo Telegraph learns that Premadasa had pledged to back the proposal to keep Sirisena in office until 2025 provided that steps are taken to divest Wickremesinghe of the Prime Minister’s post and that the current imbroglio over the fate of the Prime Minister stems from this process.

Maithripala Sirisena should keep his promise to the people and step down after his term as President ends…

Or has he forgotten his promise not to contest for a second term!?

          Don’t violate human rights.

Everything/everybody changes, it’s a universal truth so anybody can change mind.

But should a promise to people be changed, should follow an ethical way simply by reasoning.
He has every legal right to contest for a second term even without reasoning if the reason is well known/clearly visible to the public.

It’s not a permission to deceive.

Haven’t you ever changed your mind?

UNP died the day RW was given the reins based on his relationship to Jayawardana. Unfortunately this guy has not got the skills of his uncle and “no grey” matter either. Otherwise why would he think that he could get away with robbing the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the assets of the nation. What a “pinguththaraya” (nincompoop)!

C>T, comments of this nature should be ignored. Mrs. Premadasa is a former ‘First Lady’, and was a energetic person. I still recall she was one of the first to arrive at Elephant House immediately after the LTTE bomb in 1985, and personally offered assistance, walked amongst the wounded, gave instructions, brought in help from outside etc.

Our national problem is the lack of common decency and politeness. IF we can get over these and address issues and implement them, then we will again be a nation like we were decades ago.

CT Editors, and Manoj: Please don’t be shameless and try to distract us from Bondscam Ranil who has lost more elections than anyone and clings to power. His greed for power and looting of the Central Bank to buy power is sickening.

The bottom Line is Bond Scam Ranil must go or be impeached for looting the Central Bank and destroying that institution and the country’s economy.
Sajith and Sira are clowns but not as corrupt as Ranil. hey will no destroy public institutions and sell the country to foreigners in the name of Fake development with the help of fake foreign experts!.

His mother already changed the religion also. Born again( her new religion) people will pump the money also. People of Sri Lanka, especially Sinhalese Aryans now knows reality and now they want SINHALESE ONLY GOVERNMENT without MUSLIMS and TAMILS. Last king Mahinda completely destroyed entire LTTE leadership and world’s deadliest Terrorists Group LTTE in Sinhalese Country. How King Dutugamu achieved one Mahinda King also achieved. Right from the Independent CEYLON and SRI LANKA ruled and ruling by Sinhalese Aryans only. Let Muslims and Tamils, live and let live. Now, Sinhalese majority knows who are the wealth robbers of the CEYLON and SRI LANKA.

It doesn’t matter who makes deals with whom ……..all deals are short-term (look how long Ranil/Siresana deal lasted) ………….In the long-term ……….it’s always “The Economy Stupid.” …..more than punishing the crooks. ………. Ranil didn’t deliver on the promised economic-benefits. After “Volkswagen” people saw all the other promises as just smoke and mirrors.

There’s no point in him hanging around ……..he is done for good; things can only get worse ………….he should step aside and let Sirisena’s SLFP and Mahinda’s JO handle the economy. According to the Auditor General the country is drowning in a sea of debt……………

SLFP side of politics has always buggered the economy……….they know diddle about running a modern economy………Nivad Cabraal was a UNP man, TB Jayasundra was a talented guy who could hold it all together for a while…….but when things were going to hit the fan he advised Mahinda to hold the election early………….You have to hand it to Mahinda, ………..of all the SLFP backward morons, he is smart enough to know whom to entrust the economy to; he didn’t entrust it to Dayan, Rajiva, Vasudeva, Weerawansa ……….He picked who could get the Ponzi-scheme going as long as it could…………….but not as long as ol’ Madoff!

Now the biggest fall-guy is Ranil …….if he steps aside other fall-guys will quickly emerge ……..that’s Lanka for you in a nutshell ………

Neither the UNP or nor the SLFP is governed by an internally transparent constitution. These are not modern, democratic organizations. There is no accountability. Yet, STUPID Sri Lankans who are enslaved by these two parties, time and again, entrust our whole future to these power-hungry, greedy, self-serving, CRIMINALS. Dogmatic JVP lives in their own non-existent paradise. They can never change or move beyond max 6% vote base, even if Sri Lanka will be burnt by bastards of the SLFP and the UNP. Other groups are run by cunning leaders who brazenly, exploit minorities, ethnic sensitivities, and inflammatory religion. We need a charismatic leader who can bulldoze all that. A 3rd option to rise above party politics on behalf of the people of this country. We came close with Sirisena, but as expected those traitors squandered that golden opportunity. Sri Lanka’s MACRON where are you? Cheers!
PS: Going by the smiles on Mahinda Raja, Basil Raja, Namal Raja, Yo Raja & Gota Raja, they now firmly believe, they are off the hook. Just a matter of time, before they will be the back-in charge. Nobody will be punished. Murders or economic criminals will walk free. Well done Sirisena & RW. You took us for a ride again. You will be cursed by the people of this country.

Funny why the Sirasa news is comparing Ranil to Dictators while avoiding his role in toppling our own Director!

Media please play your role in eliminating the toppled dictatorship from ever coming back to power.

Don’t let your media agendas put our country back under the Rajapaksas Dictatorship by selectively attacking Ranil.

Sirasa has not been giving and attention to the Rajapaksas cases of late instead majority of the news is focused only on attacking Ranil.

I don’t understand what they have against him but it’s starting to look like they have a huge bias against him! Even comparing him to horrible dictators from other nations!

What ever is behind it all don’t create the conditions for a Rajapaksas comeback and undo the progress of our country…

Is that what is all about?

How does Mahinda Raja feel, after eating hoppers with the Gamaya?

In the meantime, the country is sinking in red ink.

We thought coercion was antithetical to good governance or yahapalanaya. But, a prominent advocate of good governance has called upon the government not to balk at anything in its efforts to overcome challenges to its rule. He has demanded that even measures that may not be in conformity with democratic norms be adopted for that purpose.

Ven. Dambara Amila Thera, addressing the media on Thursday, together with some prominent civil society activists, urged the beleaguered Sirisena-Wickremesinghe government, which is also experiencing internal problems, to appoint former Army Commander, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, the Minister of Law and Order to bring order out of chaos. He minced no words when he said Fonseka must be given six months to accomplish the task with the laws being made to fall silent, if necessary

As My3 quite rightly told the Nation soon after he was elected, the President is the servant of the people. It is WE who should decide who should lead us.

Of course, politicians everywhere try to pull the wool over our eyes; it is particularly unfortunate that in this country, we, the public, allow the politicians to get away with this sort of thing. After any election, journalists routinely congratulate the electorate on its maturity. Rubbish. Nothing of the sort! It is the silliest of consideration that appear to sway elections.

Yes, I remember Jayampathi Wickremaratne, APPOINTED M.P. who had cheated at a Pera University Exam saying what is here reported on a YouTube interview. All wrong things being done by these guys. I remember commenting on it, perhaps on YouTube. It’s not on the link that CT has provided.

Incidentally, how nice that all features, like spell check, cut and paste etc. now work on Colombo Telegraph.

My3 was a good leader for us to have; Ranil wasn’t. But My3 came in promising not to contest again. He HAS to give up, however much it may suit us to have him thereafter. A Man’s word should be his Bond.

    • 0
      1

No Sinhala Man’s word is his bond!

      • 1
        1

        Oh, dear, Estate Labourer,

Do you really think that we’ve sunk so low?

I feel that My3 was essentially a good guy, but the way he got elected he got trapped. Would any of us have fared much better, I wonder?

I’d like your honest observations on that, please EL.

My personal view is that I would have been more reckless, more in a hurry, would have TRIED to act in a principled way.

I may have succeeded, or may have been assassinated within six months. Either result preferable to the present pathetic situation.

  • 10

There is NO SENSE at all in getting involved in a BID to become the President, either by MY3 OR RW or even by any other politician. Every political party in this country has PLEDGED to abolish this position of “President” and transfer those powers within that “Hierarchy” to the Parliament. I remember, at one of the TV discussions, when the present PM, Mr.RW was questioned, whether he intends to contest at a future “Presidential Election”, he unequivocall y stated that there would not be such an election in the future. What did that mean? He (RW) and his party is “DEFINITE” on the abolition of that position of “President”. That is one reason this Government, I believe, proposing to give effect to the proposition through a new Constitution. If the “Constitution Making” takes too long, why not a proposal be placed before the Parliament and pass it UNANIMOUSLY (since all political parties have PLEDGED it) and seek the approval of the People through a REFERENDUM. The people are asking WHY that is not done and that leads to speculation.

I was in the understanding that Jeyampathy’s quake was coming from Ranil’s gut. I thought it was good option for New King.

If Ranil is not cooperating, New has one more option. He can tap and see the Rapist Army to find out at what temperature they are. As Old King has let the current opportunity to flow out, he might not be interested in Army’s help anymore. So Dinesh and New King, with Rapist Army can be the partners for that sole proprietorship.

I am really not concerned if RW or Sajith or Karu or Nimal Siripala being PM. Not even concerned about who is killing who to reach to this post or feeling emotional for RW. Me, as a poor woman, I am very concerned about who can deliver to the masses and to the nation.

Just a side note: We have seen what RW can do as PM. We know how poor performing Karu as a Speaker, not sure if he is going to do better as PM. Nimal Siripala; will ask what he can do, once he wakes up. So left with Sajith. why not give him a chance for this reason: 1: He is young 2: His father did good for the poor masses, so give little chance to DNA 3: He has been doing great

Those who think it is RW who can represent Sri Lanka internationally is complete BS. International image is just a reflection of national image of any country. If we have the right local image, even WimalW will be accepted in international arena like how they accepted MY3 thinking he was a real game-changer

Politicians in Sri Lanka forget that they are answerable to the voters. Unfortunately once they are elected they think they are the Gods. This leads to self serving decisions. This is the reason why all Sri Lankan politicians when the enact legislation or vote on a bill they do not think of the country, not of the voters, not of anything else but of themselves only. They only think how that legislation or bill is going to affect them personally. In order to stop this at least to some extent it should be made compulsory that all Parliamentary sessions and committee sessions should be telecasted live. Will the Speaker and the President as head of the Government have the guts to do this even if there is opposition. Further the Speaker who has shown on numerous occasions that he has no control over the Parliament, especially control over the so called Joint Opposition should be firmer and kick out any MP who misbehaves in the Parliament not for a few minutes or a day but for at least a month to three months. When an MP is kicked out for a period the salary for that period should be deducted from the monthly pay. Only then the Parliament will function as it should function for the benefit of the country.

Mahinda Rajapakse has no role in the scam.IT looks it was simply ro fatten their pockets. Money is with the famle side In a house(S) right side to the country money is hidden. The fellow is a liberal one he brought a bill too (he wrote some nyaya may be about girls).

Why law enforcement powerless? The constitution gives them the power to arrest any wrong doer, even if it is the Prime Minister. A policeman who has duty in his mind must arrest and lock up the PM, and his IGP and minister must back him up. What happens in Sri Lanka is everyone is creeping to the political nincompoop boss that gives them their jobs and nobody works to the rule book, not even the PM: it is a feudal system, and not a law abiding democracy with a credible constitution. What is written is for show, window dressing to hoodwink the west, I mean the Brits and American governments, to extract money from them.

On illanganthilake, a former convict, is also conencted to the bond scam. Probably these things are in the report. This bank robber is not the first one. It has happened at least four times even when the coutnry was srtuggling with war. the totola hesit may be about 63 billion, not other things. right now, Sri lankan is not getting much money from Middle east women too. The minister responsible had said that all the women are livng with Indian and they are strict partners.
