How Would JR, Gamini Or Lalith Have Handled The Current Regime/Chaos?

By Vishwamithra1984 –

“Any nation that thinks more of its ease and comfort than its freedom will soon lose its freedom; and the ironical thing about it is that it will lose its ease and comfort too.” ~W. Somerset Maugham

JR JayewardeneIt is indeed a fascinating exercise to speculate. Not only is it fascinating but taken in the context of great uncertainty that shrouds today’s issues, it is intriguing and educating to find out what the old Masters’ strategic thinking and their tactical moves within that strategy, would have engineered to bring about a collapse of an ostensibly formidable power. The obvious counter to the basic premise of this argument is: If J R, Gamini or Lalith were alive today, there would never have been a President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Mahinda Rajapaksa– yes, but as President- no way. Therefore, Readers, please read this piece only in the context of the basic premise being treated as speculation or conjecture. But I have no doubt that in that speculative exercise we will find some fascinating facts, illuminating examples and some uncanny parallels. How would J R, Gamini or Lalith have, individually as well as collectively, managed the current dual-crisis- the United National Party and the Opposition on the one hand and on the other, a corrupt and nepotistic regime headed by one single family.

Sri Lanka as a country and its people as a nation, whether Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim or Burger, have always shown a tendency to cling on to a personality cult. It is so common for the entire East as a geographical region. Especially in the Indian Subcontinent, personality cult, as against following an astute leadership, has been the driving force of socio-political change. Shrewd politicians have made use of this idiosyncrasy of the Eastern mind and exploited it to the maximum possible degree. That is how celluloid heroes have become politicians of immense veneration; sporting giants have managed to mesmerize not only their spectators but when launched into the field of politics, become instant celebrities cum heroes. When these gung-ho heroes are devoid of any education and learning of any acceptable standard, the solutions that they try to seek for the complex issues that confront them on a daily basis, once installed in power, appear to be more simplistic than simple, more stark than nuanced and in fact, more knotty than the problems they strive to solve themselves.

It is into this current quagmire which the collective parliamentary Opposition finds itself in that a magic potion needs to be introduced and it won’t be too much to ask either. In order to ascertain what strategic measures and tactical maneuvers would have been employed by the past ‘Greats’ such as J R Jayewardene, Lalith Athulathmudali and Gamini Dissanayake, one must invariably delve into present chaotic status of the Party. What is the present situation?

United National Party (UNP)

  • 42 MPs – 35 elected and 7 from the National List

All three, J R, Gamini and Lalith would have made use of the opportunity to build national-level orators. They would have insisted that Sajith Premadasa speak at every important bill and always make speeches on national issues instead of parochial local issues pertaining only to Hambantota district. Attacking the policies of the Government and tying those policy-criticisms to the leadership of the ruling clan would have been a must under any of the three leaders, J R, Gamini and Lalith. Shying away from attacking the misdeeds of the key personalities in the Government would not have been allowed by J R, Gamini or Lalith. In other words, all those three leaders would have unleashed the oratorical skills of Kabir Hashim, Sajith Premadasa, Buddika Pathirana and Rosy Senanayake. Rosy in particular because her appeal to the general public and women folks could be invaluable. Also, by asking these MPs to go around the country, another objective could be achieved- that of obtaining their 100% commitment to the Party. In the present uncertain scenario, buying up of opposition MPs cannot be ruled out.

  • The disunity that was rampant prior to the Uva PC elections does seem to have taken a backseat and the cornering of Sajith Premadasa, former President R Premadasa’s son, seems to have been resolved with a Deputy Leader position in the Party.

Under J R, Gamini or Lalith, the kind of disunity that was responsible for the poor performance at almost all elections would not have been tolerated by the Party leadership. Period. Holding the Party hostage by some MPs was not even heard of those days and party discipline was held in high esteem at the time. Yet, legitimate grievances of parliamentarians would have had a much more receptive ear under those leaders and favoritism, especially under J R Jayewardene, was a no-no. E.g. what happened to Rukman Senanayake, J R P Sooriyapperuma and Jinadasa Niyathapala before the UNP came to power and what befell E L Senanayake, Cyril Mathew, Ronnie de Mel, Gamani Jayasuriya, N G P Panditharatne, Anura Daniel, Sunil Ranjan Jayakody after coming to power in 1977 are glaring examples of keeping Party discipline in full gear. Successive electoral victories proved the case for strict Party discipline.

  • The Leadership Council and its Chairman Karu Jayasuriya, although it came in for wider criticism, especially by the Premadasa supporters, seems to have evaporated, solely due to the better-than-expected results at the Uva PC elections.
  • However, among the negatives is the Party’s General Secretary who, on more than a few occasions, has shown sheer incompetence in the execution of work on the one hand and a woeful lack of political acumen on the other. In addition, his pronouncements which had to be corrected by the Leader later and allegations about corrupt practices employed by him when handing over nominations for various districts during the last few Provincial Council elections are being talked about openly by some senior members of the Party.

Under J R, Gamini or Lalith, the present General Secretary would not have survived 24 hours, leave alone  almost one and half decades. In the context of the caliber of Daham Wimalasena, Ranjan Wijeratne and Dr. Gamini Wijesekara, the present guy just fades into insignificance and looks unpleasantly out of place

J R Jayewardene and Gamini Dissanayake had been quintessential team-men. Their dedication and devotion to the chosen objectives and purposes was amply demonstrated right throughout their political lives. J R, inviting Dudley Senanayake from retirement to take over the leadership of the Party and Gamini asking Lalith to be the leader of the Democratic United National Front (DUNF) were fine examples of that trait. However, Lalith’s ambition and wanting to be the leader of the country at all costs would not hold good for our argument.

As far as what they could have done with the present set up in the Government ranks would have been diametrically opposed to the way the current UNP leadership is handling that very matter. The current UPFA leadership is revolving around one single family; apparently, the President is grooming his son, Namal to succeed him and that is why a third term. When a similar situation existed during Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s Government, J R was crafty enough to drive a wedge in between the then SLFP/ULF coalition which ultimately resulted in the breakup of that coalition. All three leaders of yesteryear, J R, Gamini and Lalith would have exploited the current situation to the hilt to drive a similar kind of a wedge between the son and brothers. In politics, as in love, all is fair. One must be ready and willing to play that game. Carrying long-term IOUs is one essential part of that equation.

Here I end my speculation work. Reader, please remember, this is pure conjecture.

Ranil seems to think that he can win by sitting in an armchair and sipping tea with his WC friends. Ranasinghe Premadasa was a workaholic and a disciplinarian, out and about talking to the people.

      Taraki,

You must be gazing noon stars! Was it why people celebrated RP’s death?

Some one….you are some what wrong. Mr. R.Premadasa was indeed
        a workaholic & a disciplinarian . He usually started work at 5am
daily and his permanent secretaries too woken up at that time by
RP himself. He had a vision to build up the future of the country
and He is the one who widened the Galle road, and not Oxford
educated SWRD or JR. It never dawned on them . Unfortunately his advisers were not competent enough to advise him in the right way to turn the economy of the country, around.

In Sri lanka, it is not unusual to celebrate some one’s death, so
do not judge a man’s capabilities by the behaviour of the people who celebrated his death.

Someone, we are discussing Premadasa’s ability to talk to the common people and impress them. Whether he was popular or not AFTER he became President, or whether people celebrated or not AFTER he was murdered, is completely irrelevant isn’t it?

          Taraki, Lanka Watch,

Don’t talk nonsense. Premadasa was also a powerhungerkoholic who completely destroyed the party’s succession plan hence the UNP and in general deprived the country of the next leadership which JR nurtured. He suffered from inferiority complex hence fabricated “Piyaagama” out of an old Walawwa in Matugama/Kalutara area in order to fake his “Walaw breeding”. Like MR the bugger was superstitious and followed “Sastharakaraya and Mantharakarayo”, gave money and weapons to LTTE, bungled IPKF issue and wasted the opportunity to decimate LTTE, possessed only a “shanty depth” mentality hence pursued garment factories only and could not envision a plan for all-inclusive sustainable development of the country, begot a stupid animal like Sajith who is a cancer within the UNP, was a dim wit who could not identify the Tiger who lived outside his bed room and used by Sirisena Cooray to get rid of the bugger. Most of the old people in the country are terrified when they hear the name of RP. He possessed only a big mouth and small brain just like his patiya Sajith does.

Some one – Agree with you that RP was not educated enough like SWRD or JR but what did the educated do to the country. They were
the first to create communal disharmony among the peace loving
citizens of this country. They were educated enough to judge the
pulses of the people and induced communalism, the easy way to achieve power and damaged the mere fabrics of the country. It is true that he financed Ltte to fight a war against the Indian forces as he never wanted foreign boots on our land and that was his concept. He wanted to solve the problem within the country and he disagreed with JR on this issue. I am also of your age group and pls tell me a name of a Prime Minister or a President
under whom people(All communities) lived without fear.

That is the reason why such a disiplinarian took th elives of over 50K youth across the island. H aha .. I can nt help laughing from my back end. You guys are the real jokers of lanken society. Ranil is a gentle sorta of civlized person .. he deserves to be the president of the country. If ill educated ill mannered uncultured ones like MR, Premadas deserved to lead the nation …..why not RW ?

Leelawathie, we all know that Ranil would be a good President but he is not going to get the Presidency by default. He should be travelling hundreds of miles a day talking to the masses and explaining his solution to the nation’s problems. Even Obama had to do it. If Ranil does not get more active the time will come when someone will say “Ranil, Ranil who?”

ACCORDING TO YOU::: BEST CANDIDATE FOR THE PRESIDENCY WOUDL BE DUMINDA SILVA… so that you guys can live on DRUGS and MURDERS. The days ahead of us will be darker than you think. If MR would not be replaced by anyone, things would work for sure the ruins of the nation. Signs are already there.

        Sama @,

you are dead right. But whether the majority folks grasp this is the quesiton of the hour.

Most of them are happy with the surface view – they just live today not thinking about tomorrow. Just get the view by yourself talking to them cross section of the society would prove you that ours are a very naive nation.

Drug traffickers turn politicians today do both type work which is politics under MR and drug and alcohol trafficking. They even escape from police and lanken courts as it is the case with Sajin vaass is beyond all laws in the Nonis assualt affair.

We the many attacked CBK regime but hers were not fallen to this much of appalling levels where we are all helpless to this day.

I plan my travel to lanka this next month, but I am worried whether the security I expect will be there. In case I would feel bad, I will even reveal all what I know aobut MR to the EU parliament. We will do what we can to get rid of this Monster-MR. Only place he deserves to be kept is quarantine – as it is for IBOLA infected patients.

Oh yes! Premadasa also helped me to carry out spying for the LTTE under a bogus “journalistic” license, not to mention his saving of political scientist hiding in India with RAW help.

        0

Once again Siva, we are talking about Premadasa’s ability to move crowds and RW’s inability to do so. What has Premadasa’s politics or anything else got to do with it? You people are Koheda yanne, malle pol fellows.

Having being part of the conversation before the DUNF was formed and closely involved with the events that preceded Lalith and Gamini being evicted from the UNP, my notes and memories begs to differ from my friend Vishwamithra.
Both wanted to be the leader of the UNP. Neither would have given away if not a simple solution offered by Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike – who played the part of honest broker between the two – and that solution was a revolving leadership, where each (there was one more leader of the DUNF – I will leave Vishvamithra to name him) had a two year term.

    Vishwamithra1984,

What if all of us were to post all of our wet dreams, hallucinations and mythologies occurring in our minds? What your flawed dream could not grasp was that all your imagined heroics of the Trio were dreamed of to have taken place prior to the creation of Executive Presidency by JR and you pathetically failed to consider that all important power factor. It is to counter the very opposing and destabilizing JR-Lalith-Gamini like combination why JR created this powerful post. JR never wanted it to be wielded by anybody from another political party. It was Premadasa who finally let down the vision of JR and sank UNP. After the post of EP was created, given away to a racist party like SLFP and usurped by a criminal rogue like MARA it is the end of the story. Nobody including JLG Trio could shake that power. It was that very power inherent in EP that enabled to decimate the quasi invincible LTTE terrorism with a massive diaspora and international support. Even JR wouldn’t know what it was capable of. Unfortunately the power and might of EP has been handed over to a razor totting monkey with no learning, breeding and decency. The unfortunate reality is that since the steamrolling EP does not leave any room for emergence of any national leader or opposing voice because he promptly buys or buries them the brainwashed racist masses in the country have to learn the true nature of the despot in a long grind of deception, suffering and final awakening which is bound to bind time for realization. The country now is in that final realization stage of the true nature of the rogue and fake hero. Where despots rule with compromised might of the military, police, judiciary, legislature, state machinery, media, priests and social viruses like savior concept, native and international enemies, UN like bodies branded and perceived as the enemies of the state…….. there is no room for Vishwamithra1984 typed happy hallucinations to emerge-rather now is the time and space for Arab Springs to occur, Hong Kong Umbrellas to start the freedom struggle. Now don’t ask who to give leadership because the despot allows nobody to emerge. Each one has to be a freedom fighter. Each one has to be a leader and a soldier. Each one must feel the guilt and responsibility for we see our common enemy. We have no time to waste or quarrel over past Trios or Trojans or what they would have done in situations desperate. We know only the strengths we have: RW, Premadasas, Tissas, Kiriellas and the weaklings that used to sit in a corner. We have JVP, DNF, SF and others. We have Tamils and Muslims. We have millions with an axe to grind with Rajapakshas. Our social, moral, ethical and inalienable responsibility is to tirelessly and relentlessly to enrich this social uranium to the required clarity and antagonism against Rajapakshas so that this social nuclear bomb shall soon explode to reduce this Rajapaksha menace to dust and rust.

“The greats” Gamini, and Lalith couldn’t handle the chaos in their own ranks

And the” Workaholic “apparently gave the contract to his mate Prabakaran to sort of sort things out amicably.

Inhabitants apparently got upset, because Mr Prabakaran was no amicable person and took care of the Workaholic as well, who gave the contract to him.

How ironic that the successor to Gamini, Lalith , and the Workaholic is now totally dependant on the one time political ally of Mr Prabakaran as well as the Bankers and the Financiers of the LTTE to become our inhabitants next President….

And my elders tell me this Successor sat through all the chaos and assassinations without even a scratch..

    How cool is that !!!

      Sumanasekeram, everytime I read your comments, it feels like a thunder hitting my head. You have caused an eternal headache. Please answer this question, I am going to place a few names of LTTE members and you tell me who they are with at this moment;

•Karuna Amman (aka: Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan, murdered 600 unarmed Sinhala police officers in the East, who surrendered to him)?

•KP (aka: Shanmugam Kumaran Tharmalingam, chief LTTE arms dealer and VP’s right hand man, who has been one of the main reasons the LTTE became so powerful)?

•Pillayan (aka: Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, a child soldier)?

      •Daya master (aka: Velayutham Dayanidhi)?

•Doulas Devananda (though not part of the LTTE, ex-EPRLF a group responsible for bombing and shelling the heck out of the Jaffna fort, full of soldiers in the 80s)?

Many more to list, but I believe this list will suffice.

Biggest problem with RW and his hopeless clan is that their incapacity to understand their capacity. If wrongs committed by MR regime to be corrected the entire old guard including Sajith P should be made to retire from politics altogether permitting a young dynamic leadership to emerge within.

This is the only way MR can be shown the door. People are sick of the current set up, particularly when the Party general sec make completely unacceptable remark that they are holding talks with the ruling pary members who are responsible for robbing the natiion and made the coffers at the Treasury emptied.

Easy. They would have burnt the Jaffna library few months before the election as they did in 1981.

(And they easily won the election.)

Settle more families of thugs to prostitute for the army in the North and East?

Unlike the incumbent, they would not be stuck to power greedy agendas, they would have addressed the real issues like bringin more jobs and industries to the country. They are all cultured and educated which is what distinguish with the current regime.

Their foreign policies would not end up the way the MR ‘s incapable actitives count all kind of diplomatic defeat to this day. You guys being unable to distinguish which end to be used for speak will surely take several more months than even some rural folks. Good luck and budusarnai apita

          Simple fact.

JR and the golden boys made the whole world support Tamils.

Now gauge how bad that foreign policy would have been comparing it to current fiasco.

@Indra, your language is colourful but sums up this fellow JR quite quickly. But I agree with you 100%. Today this country is in this state because of cowards/racist hoodlums like JR, Cyril Matthew, Gamini Dissanayake, Athulathmudali, Wimala Wijayawardene. To add fuel to the fire, we had racists on the Tamil side like the TULF buggers who took advantage of the anger of the Tamil people.

As some survey in the past mentioned that more than 67% of the sri lankans have a mental desease. I believe that. When you go to the west look at the people how evolve they are. I blame JR JAYAWARDANA for all the problems that we have. Democracy was destroyed by this idiot to gain more power. I am surprised that he at least had the brain to put two terms conditional requirement for the terms. This idiot created LTTE and JVP killers. Didnt know how to control the situation. LEt the innocent tamils get killed and did not do anything to annihiliate the LTTE.
from JR TO MAHINDA RAPASASSSA all leaders were power hungry and pracicing family nepotism. At present it is the worse. These peopl love material and rob for generations.

I do not know who this Vishwamithra is. Anyway, before writing this article, he should have had the presence of mind to read the “Hansard” and locate the speech that both his heroes viz. JR, Lalith and Gamini made in Parliament when the new Constitution proposed the Executive Presidency. Has he forgotten the massive campaign that was carried out by these two at that time to convince the general public how and why this Executive Presidency is a NEED and a MUST to the country.

Today we suffer the “SPELL” that these TRIO brought on us. While we are subjected to that SUFFERING, do we have to say RIP to them?

    Vishwamithra 1984,

I know I am a bit off the topic here. Nevertheless food for thought.

JR would have handled the present chaos no better. It is during his tenure the infamous chaos of ‘Black July’ took place. It was in his time the infamous occupation of Sri Lanka by Indian forces took place.

Gamini was a short sighted fellow who took part in organised chaos during the time of the second JVP uprising. He is complicit in the deaths and disappearances of thousands during that time of absolute chaos.

Lalith was narrow minded and vicious. Remember the acid throwing affair. Lalith also was with the Premadasa government when death squads were roaming freely.

It is not correct to discuss the wrong doings of the dead but the infamous trio, JR, Gamini and Mudali will be remembered by the Tamils for ever. Most notorious among the trio was JR,who supervised the communal riots in 1983, which brought disrespect to the country and UN and the West eyed SL suspiciously there after. Gamini supervised the burning of Jaffna Library, depriving the poor Tamils of learning free of charge from a library that was world famous. The cause was too many students entered the Universities from Jaffna schools, who used this library for reference work and Mudali killed the Tamil captives, handed over by the Indian army for safe guarding, before proper questioning. This happened immediately after signing of the Indo/Ceylon pact by JR & Rajiv and arrival of the Indian army to the North.

I need to correct you on one fact Lanka Watch as you mention Lalith

” killed the Tamil captives, handed over by the Indian army for safe guarding, before proper questioning”

that is wrong, basically as always the LTTE was violating the ceasefire and tried to bring in Arms from India and got caught by the Navy (ironically the Naval officer in the Navy gunboat was a Tamil officer who retired in 2011 as rear admiral)

they were kept in Palali (Pulendran and Kummarapp et all)but the cyanide capsules were sent by none other than that terror cheif VP and rumor hs it that thy were ordered to take it,it was sent in their lunch packets

other facts about Lalith is correct he was a scoundrel of the highest order and personally supervised dropping barrel bombs over Jaffna using transport planes of the SLAF

in a strange twist of Laliths fate he got mauled very badly by the JVP bomb in the parliament in 1987 and it was none other than a famous Tamil who patched him up and later Lalith was got rid of by none other than Premadasa ,Sirisena Cooray team

JR will start another Sinhala Tamil riot.
Athulathmudali will kill 10000 Tamils to get at 2 LTTE members
Gamini will be back in Jaffna to burn the Jaffna Library for the 2nd time. Only things is him counterpart Cyril Matthew has already kicked the bucket and rotting in hell.

How would JR,Gamini or Lalith have handled The current Regime/Chaos?
Things would be more disastrous. The CVV of all three individually and collectively would be ample Proof.
