Thevaraja had been attacked at about 5.30 pm yesterday, hours after he concluded a discussion with members of the Vavuniya citizens committee on a protest they were planning to stage on Friday urging the authorities to free detained human rights defender – Balendran Jayakumari.

He had been attacked by four persons who had arrived in two motor bikes, in the area between the Nedunkerny army camp and the Police station. He had been heavily assaulted by iron rods but had not suffered any injuries to his head as he had been wearing a helmet at the time of the attack. According to reports, the attackers had threatened to kill him if he goes on to stage the protest on Friday, while they assaulted him with iron rods.

Thevaraja has been admitted to the Nedunkerny hospital and had been transferred to the Vavuniya hospital to receive further treatments.

The #Freejayakumari protest was scheduled to be held opposite Vavuniya district courts on Friday at 10 am. It has been over 200 days since Jayakumari and her 15 year-old daughter was taken into custody. She was arrested under charges of aiding Gobi whom the military claims was attempting to revive the LTTE but no charges have been filed against her yet.
