Human Rights In A Brutalised Society

By Ajita Kadirgamar

Ajita Kadirgamar

It was exhausting — mentally and emotionally — to sit and listen to Dr Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu  reveal fact after fact, story after story to illustrate the hellish depths to which Sri Lanka has sunk in terms of abuse of human rights and the brutalisation of society.

The executive director of the Centre for Policy Alternatives was guest speaker at the 13th  Convention of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Foundation (SLHRF) held in Colombo on Monday, September 2.

He began by picking a bone with UN High Commissioner For Human Rights, Navi Pillay‘s speech at her recent press conference before departing Sri Lanka where she stated, ” I am deeply concerned that Sri Lanka, despite the opportunity provided  by the end of the war to construct a new vibrant, all-embracing state, is showing signs of heading in an increasingly authoritarian direction.” We are not heading in that direction he told the audience emphatically, this IS an authoritarian state!

In a civilised society he said, people do not humiliate each other, institutions do not humiliate people. Yet on a daily basis we see example of such base behaviour. People of this country live in fear because of their ethnicity.

“We live in a country where there is a complete collapse of rule of law, underpinned by a culture of impunity.”

The LLRC report is a key document, one of the most critical to be written in recent times in the country’s history. The international community , not to mention the people of the country are saying,  please implement the recommendations! Why then he questioned, was the document given to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka to translate? Why did it take eight months?

While Saravanamuttu battered and pounded away at the audience’s moral  and intellectual conscience all the while bombarding them with hard hitting stories, facts, statistics and quotes (all delivered off the cuff)  the one salvo that hit me like a fist in the stomach had to do with International Day of the Disappeared which fell on Friday, August 30.

A public vigil was organised at Independence Square in the presence of around 200 family members of the disappeared to highlight the crime of enforced and involuntary disappearance in Sri Lanka. I had planned to be there but my visiting foreign guests turned up back in Colombo that evening. Saravanamuttu though not there either because of election related work in the north, was told by a known source that while the vigil went on , the hoards of  Friday evening walkers, joggers and fitness freaks just went about their business with not even  an ounce of curiosity and certainly not an iota of sympathy displayed for their fellow citizens’ pain as they held candles and clutched photos of their disappeared.

“What kind of a society are we?” he lamented. Do we care more about recreation, burning calories and watching our kids ride their bikes around Independence Square? Could these people not have paused for a moment in silent solidarity? Could they not have sat or walked with the families, asked a question or two, held an age-speckled, wrinkled hand, patted a weary shoulder, ruffled a fatherless kid’s hair? Are the denizens of Colombo so blind and deaf to others’ suffering? Is this how desensitized we are now, Saravanamuttu demanded?

It appears the parks, jogging tracks, pavements, roads  and superficial beautification of the city have bedazzled the people into a sense of misplaced euphoria. We the people of Colombo, for whom the partying never really stopped over the past 30 years in our little corner of the world, we seem to feel no pain for the raw and still bleeding wounds of the war survivors, those left behind, those still waiting for a loved one to return. Those with no closure.

If this is the case and we have become so brutalised, then the government has won on several counts. Distract the people from grim realities. .Check. Pamper them with small luxuries they think they have earned. .Check. Sidetrack their attention from the burning issues of the day. .Check. The enforcers have created a nation of zombies.

The very nature of our humanness is our capacity to feel compassion for one another. Human rights is about what we are willing to do to stand up for EVERYONE’s rights, because it is a violation of OUR rights, Saravanamuttu reminds us.

The Sri Lanka Human Rights Foundation under the presidency of B. M. Murshideen may regret inviting Dr Saravanamuttu to speak at their convention.  If those present understood the urgency of even a fraction of what he threw their way, they would have gone home in a sorry, despairing state of mind. SLHRF’s current list of 23 “Present and Future Activities”, just got a whole lot longer.

Saravanamuttu left the audience with a forceful, grave challenge. “The majority of Sri Lankans don’t know or don’t give a damn about what is going on. What is the Sri Lanka you want? What can you do to achieve it?

    Ms. Ajita KAdiragamar:

Why don’t you think about migrating to a country which respect human rights.

At least you can pay taxes so they will use that money to invade other countries and wreck their lives.

Believe me, IF that happened, either your Or Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu will not have time to write these BS articles. Because, you both will be busy earning something some how to pay taxes and the bills.

      Jim softly:

Mahinda certainly needs bosom friends like you – for tacitly admitting by telling Ajitha to migrate to a country that respects human rights – that the SL regime does not observe human rights. Obviously MR needs more guys like you to put a noose around his neck. You are welcome aboard.

Jim You half Christian and half Jew,

It is people like you who have made the impossible possible and for your information she wouldn’t have to migrate very far after 23rd September as she has an ancestral home in Keerimalai which MR tried to take over. She can have her home back but as Kathirgamars progeny she might feel more at home with you lot.

This is how things are going to shape up and even you will be happy that things have happened sooner rather than later so that we wont have to be at each others throats. Look at the series of events.

      1) MR was talking about repealing 13th Amendment with Wimal the Wansa as the front man.
      2) Basil was ordered to meet Man Mohan in Delhi and he duly obliges.
      3) He was ordered to tell MR to hold election and shelve plans to repeal 13th Amendment.
      4) MR succumbs and wilts under pressure and duly obliges and announces Election for Northern Assembly. Shelves plans to repeal.
      5) Orders Wimal the Wansa to shut up and he duly disappears from the face of Earth.
      6) Gothas ministry wound up and he goes quiet and forms an alliance with BBS and turns his effort to dealing with Muslim Extremism.
7)Mrs. Pillai allowed to visit and given unfettered access to any where and meet any one.
      8) Weak man Peiris goes to Delhi to beg Man Mohan to come to the party.
      9) TNA supremo makes his intentions clear.
      10) Elections take place and if it is free and fair TNA romps home
      11) Army ordered off the street.
      12) Land reclaimed
      13) March 2014 BJP gets elected and makes the indictment of MR closer.

But being a realist it is possible there will be hurdles to cross. MR being a Thug and supported by people like you will try to arrest CM send him to Welikade Jail and impose army rule but the election of BJP will sort him out.

It is a hard pill to take for Racists like you but it has to be taken but with passage of time and after Decree Absolute we will be separated for ever. So Good Bye

I can understand your brain capacity.

    Your almighty is Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu.

Remember there were better democratic and long lived kingdoms by the side of the Roman Kingdom. It is the propaganda that made it well known even in the future.

In the present world, conquests, crusade wars, colonial wars are still happening. You at least, simply don’t know what you are doing. Saravanamuttu is working for his foreign money.

Jim we all understand your Brain Capacity. You were questioning someone else under another thread, how one asserts who an idiot is? We do not have to look far as the bench mark for an ‘Idiot’ is well described by yourself in your utterances.

      Jim Pissa;
Look who’s talking about “brain capacity!”
The only thing smaller than YOUR brain capacity is the amount of conscience residing within all those you serve, you….!

HOW ABOUT AN ATOM OF EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT WHAT YOU SAY ABOUT MR. SARAVANAMUTTHU? Oh, but I forget: you and your paymasters don’t believe in such “Western concepts” as proof do you?

Incidentally, while you are about it why don’t you check the fact that Ajita’s father paid the supreme price for being anti-Tiger. Again, though, you wouldn’t want to spoil your b.s. with a few facts would you? Also, your paymasters might not send you the monthly (weekly? daily?) stipend if you do that, I suppose.

If the calibre of guys defending the MR regime is like you with all those filthy and repulsive language, would it be any surprise that jokers like Mervyn Silva are still around for the president of a country to seek forgiveness for such lunatic behaviour from foreign dignitaries. Right from losing the pants to such filth language, are you still in joyous mood for SL earning such dubious names – all because of jokers like you?

To say the least you are TIRESOME, particularly since you are the other side of the Jim Pissa coin, only difference is that your paymasters paid the ultimate price and are not around to continue to bankroll you!
Also, when you try to be clever, try to be accurate. It is not, “What is good for the Goose should be sauce for the Gander!” For the next time you are tempted to use that old, old saying,it should read, “What’s sauce for the goose, is sauce for the gander.” Admittedly, it is tough to be sane when you are only able to be abusive. Try being sane some time, though. You might even like it!

    Hello Ajitha,

I want to express my admiration of all you people, especially Paikiyasothi Saravanamuttu for keeping the flames of injustice alive. Not easy in a society where thuggery and intimidation lurks underneath the thinnest veneer of democracy. If you sift through the bonhomie smiles of the politicians you will plainly see the sardonic, intolerant, dangerous beast lurking to unleash its disapproval with callous disregard to any standard of decency and fair play. I say ‘Jayawewa’ to all you people trying to make a difference in a country that sadly has been forced to embrace tyranny as the price paid for deliverance of Sri Lanka from the vice like grip of LTTE.

    Ajitha,

You have the wisdom to ignore what ignorant and insensitive people like JimSofty says. This coward doesn’t have the courage to write using his true name. All what his clan can do is to show off their stupidity. Sometimes their insensitivity and ignorance come from State Media Overdose Syndrome (SMOS) and sometimes it comes from living too long with racism. So, ignore what JimSofty has to say. You can see what he has written under other articles, and guess how many brain cells maybe surviving inside his skull.

Don’t think that those who wanted to burn calories in the independence square didn’t see the posters or the survivors. It is just that those were not the kind of faces that appeal to some of their hearts. And, lets also not forget that there can be a few who wanted to stop, but scared to do so.

From the racist comments here, you may realize that the journey is tough, but keep writing. Keep fighting with the pen. Cowards find it hard to fight with the pen. If there is anything people like Gotabaya and his brother is scared of, it is the pen. That is why the CT got blocked recently, and so many journalists were physically attacked or silenced permanently. So, lets not give in to cowards.

Jim Softy, if you are a ‘Softy’ at heart, you would not close your eyes to the plight of those, who do not know what happened to their loved ones. I am not talking only about the LTTE and Government soldiers who were killed during the War, but also about the unaccounted disappearances of those in the Matale Mass Grave, the Journalists that vanished without trace, and the daily ‘White Van’ disappearances etc. etc. Please open both eyes and see what is happening in our beloved Sri Lanka, instead of seeing with only the ‘One Eye’ of a Sinhala Government Apologist! What if it was One of your ‘Loved Ones’ who vanished without Trace?

interesting . when there were bombs exploding the people did the same . what do you expect them to do . go rambo style and kill proba ? I believe most of the disappearances are before 2009 and the ones happenning now are the ones paying 9000$ to people smugglers . it takes a while to find them . some are only found by the Great White Sharks when thier unseaworthy vessels sink .but the others are in paradise in PNG .

There is little doubt that the post independent years after 1956, have seen a steady decline in the moral fiber of this nation. The colonial rule kept up a visage of unity between the disparate groups that inhabit this island almost by compulsion. Once free of the colonial yolk the might of the disfavoured sinhala buddhist majority ensured that the pendulum of political power swung overwhelmingly in their favour. It was considerd their just reward, having been subjugated for well neigh half a millenia by western colonial powers who favoured the minorities. The seeds of disaffection amongst the communities were heightened during the British rule The pretence of unity lasted a mere decade after independence.A once favoured minority, was now discriminated by covert and overt actions of governments of all parties.Racism thinly veiled, became a torrent of violent abuse, culminating in a civil war. The end of the conflict consequent to the complete extermination of the minority combatants has not resolved the issue of a single nation. The majority applies the victor’s law.
Nothing inconsistent about that. The vanquished still hangs onto their dream of a separate homeland. This time with the aid of the ubiquitous diaspora who were given succor by the western world as political refugees. What could not be gained by force is now saught by stealth. Nothing has changed. The two major communities as far as their political masters are concerned cling to their irreconcilable positions. The erosion of civil liberties given up gladly during the years of terror and counter terror, continue to be exploited by a servile and rapacious majority in Parliament. The price of human life has never been so devalued as it is now. Whether you believe Dr. Saravanamuttu or not is irrelevant. I believe he has alienated himself by hyperbole. But those who feel that there is nothing awry with the well being of the people of this land are living in a fools paradise. There is none so blind as those who do not see.

Killings and abductions are now the norm in this country. So the noveau rich feel its fashionable to mind their own business and go about their lives than to worry about a few thousand wretched people who have been tortured, killed and disposed by their govt.

I was listening to a Buddhist sermon by a venerable thero on Sirasa this morning. He said a very important thing. Buddhism does not say only to abstain from wrong, even an animal can abstain. But Buddhism says to do what is right as well which is beyond the capacity of an animal.

Food for thought for our young intellectuals and professionals who think that coming up in life is only about owning a car and earning a fat salary. Do we have any responsibility for our fellow citizens, the suffering, the poor, the dispossesed? Is life only about making money and looking after ourselves?

It is indeed very true that people in Colombo have become insensitive, not merely in the context of victims of conflict but generally in terms of those in the hinterland (Southern Province, North Central Province, Uva Province) who eke out a meagre existence excluded from the main economy.

Whether the CPA and its CEO, given their lifestyles are qualified to criticize others is a moot question; is it not?

Joggers in Jawatta were shitting in their pans, frightened of Johhny Mines and Car Bombs at the time when this writer’s namesake was bumped off with a single bullet fired from the top floor of a fellow Tamil’s luxury patch in Kurunduwatta.

But Paikiosothy wasn’t worried because he wasn’t offside.

Is Paikiosothy upset and angry at Ms Pillai because she encroached on his turf of advising the Govt on “Good Policies” or Ms Pillai didn’t deliver to his expectations?.

This aspect of Sri Lankan society is not new. It began a long time ago, with the first killings by the LTTE, the absolute massacres of JVP youth. If by desensitivity you mean that people dont care, you are wrong. People have just learned to live with circumstances, beyond their control.
They are in a way prisoners -‘prisoners of hope’, as Bishop Desmond Tutu once said.

Ajitha I read your article about your father with sadness.I value your present article too. There are people who are timid to divulge their names and write under pseudo names.Day after day I read these absurd comments by leela or jim softy. Their absurdity knows no limits.He/she is asking you to go abroad if you cannot live in a brutalised Sri Lanka. When good people leave it is the brutes like them who are left behind.Sri Lankans are anesthetized so they do not feel the pain of others despite the fact that four main religions in the world are supposed to be practised.Compassion, brotherhood empathy are the hall marks of all these religions.

Ms AK, as you notice it easily, olso these applogists like JimSofty or the others representing the majority of the hell bent for MR`S tactics that re the vote base for Rajapakshes. No matter that we the peace loving, ones longing for a society that maintain human life respect and dignity are fighting for it, they seem to have difficulties to separate good and bad – that is the basics that the people should have learnt. It is said to be a nation that own high literacy rates, but when it goes for human rights and the related issues, they – even though seem to have collected Exp being on the west, at least for several years, but fail to recognize the least as if they are blind and deaf. This is astonishing to me, while living on the west, where at least many of the human rights are being safeguarded, while lankans in general fight for their basic human rights; like crimes to have been investigated by prevailing legality to a manner people could feel – safe. Looking back the recent crimes and the corresponding investigations carried out by the state prosecutors, as Ms Pillay will have to bring before the next UNHRC sessions at the end of the month, – should be reexamined to screen the justice of them.

This is the reason why MS Pillay and anyone who respect the real justice would not rely on LANKEN JUSTICE JUDGED BY LANKEN STATE – and the essentiality of the impartial foreign body to do the job.

    • 0
      0

It is imperative to seek JUSTICE through an impartial foreign body to hold any kind of CRIME investigations of the country that are overdue – So I believe it is high time UN according the provisions of international Law – (e.g in compliance with R2P) to take ADEQUATE action against current regime not LETTING the nation- further be punished by brutal rulers. They (GLP and Keheliya) are now on a mission of converting – all what the UN HR high commissioner, Ms Pillay clearly pointed out (much more to be advocated by her at the end of the month in Geneva) into usual language by which they manipulate the majority in the country. This particular language is sadly out of facts and figures, checks and balances – contained absolutely untruths about the prevailing situ of the country. But their language has proved to be tactful to manipulate – specially rural masses (poor folks with low IQ levels)

Ajita welcome to Sri Lanka a land like no other. This is the curse of our country one mans pain is his business not mine.My pain is his fault.

I am a man in the evening of my life and have witnessed very sadly our society changing. In my youth if a dog was run over it made the newspapers. One of the biggest crimes was the murder of a pregnant school teacher, she was run over by her lover. This made headlines for about a week but today do we even read if an under aged child is raped by a politician.

No we just do not care.Just see the comments the idiots make are they humans.

I am glad that at long last people like you and Sara have opened you eyes to this.

As for a remedy,I would as a start reverse the language policy of 56 and make it compulsory for all to be trilingual this would prevent segregation in schools then at least the next generation will begin to respect each other. We should also ban the likes of the bbs and those other idiots in robes, also political parties like jhu,tna and slmc.

No one will have the guts to do this. Until this happens all we can do is weep for our country.

Yes! Sir! Now people in our society become very selfish and use every avenue to enrich them and their families.

Rape or Murder is now a “usual” news item.

The change came because of the “dharmista’ society since 1977!

The language fanatics never explain the achievements of the language based laws of the country. Are all the Sinhalese out of the poverty because of the “Sinhala Only”?

Language is now a political tool and not a provider of employment or peace!

Human Rights is a new subject to Sri Lanka as well as to the Asian nations. Canada is the only country added the UN Human Rights codes in her constitution.

Ajita or Pakiasothy cannot bring the so called human Rights all of a sudden from European nations because HR did not existed for thousands of years in our society.

Many champions of Human Rights never open their mouth when the UNP and LTTE massacred people.

Without criticizing the records of UNP and LTTE, no use of bashing the current government. Many such human Rights activists have only a goal of installing a pro-west government in Sri Lanka. It never happen for some decades.

Ajita had to report the essence of what Sarawanamuttu said, which the SLHRF appears to have pointedly failed to report!
For this,Ajita is being vilified – whereas the SLHRF appears to be reluctant to report in brief at least, what he said!
Who are the stalwarts of this “human rights foundation”?

The difference is; earlier before MR, we fought for improvement of human rights, while today, we have to fight – against not having any rights in the Island governed by a bunch of thieves. They are born to maraud the nation and the funds allocated to them. Telling something palatable, doing the opposite is in his genes. MR himself is accepted as one of the most cunning, thick skinned man – one cant keep the faith on him. Really uncultured, unethical rascals that pave the way rascals to breed easily.

Fully agreed .Colombo high life orbits in a different circle and no one cares about what is is happening in the country. We have become senseless monsters to others pain and thank you for highlighting that. There are many thousands of families suffering with pain for lost or disappearance of a relative and we are encouraged to move on ignoring their pain and loss by the present regime and their proxies for their own survival.Long standing war has made us immune to others pain and we should change this trend .

When Paikiyasothy linked HR to regime change in Sri Lanka.

When he strategised with Western embasies how to corner Sri Lanka at UNHRC whose only focus is on the deaths at Nandikadal and not sufering of all ethnicities.

When he supported Darusmans to publish bogus figures.

Would anyone in Sri Lanka will be interested in what he has to say?

I am pretty sure in his forceful presentation which has mesmerised Ajita, he never mentioned kebithigollewa, Bindunuwewa, Gomarankadawala, Kokilai, Nayaru massacres or the massacre of 30 Buddhist monks in Arantalawa or the Kathankudy Muslim massacre.

I am also pretty sure he might have spoken of ‘white flag’ surrendees but never talked about 400 surrenderred policemen in the East or massacre of prisoners in LTTE custody.

I am not sure whether he even mentioned the murder of Ajita’s father.

Non of those fit into Paikiyasothy’s agenda or his (and his masters’)version of human rights.

People can compare the benevolence received by Bradly Manning & Snowden from their lovely state compared to what Paikiyasothy can do in the authoritarian state of Sri Lanka.

    Hi Sister,

It is commendable that you are now identifying yourself with the sufferings of the Tamils. I am not sure wheteher you have any ulterior motives or it genuinly comes from the bottom of your heart.

    1) May be you have future ambitions to get into politics and there is nothing wrong with it. Would you contest from the South or North
    2) May be you are trying to settle scores with MR for trying to steal your ancestral land.

I remember I had some harsh words for your Dad when you tried to revive fond memories. But what I said about your Dad still stands and his speech about the long march still rings in my ears. I also said that he was trapped in a Tamil Body but his soul was Sinhalese.

The change that we all yearn for is not going to come from within and if proof was needed you only have to read the adverse and insulting comments from the vast majority of the Sinhalese readers who are overtly and inherently racist. That is why MR is riding high because he speaks to the Gallery.

The change that we have seen has only come about because of pressure from outside and that now likely to intensify.
My soul wont rest in peace until I see MR and his cronies behind bars for what they have done and even Banki Bloody Moon has admitted after Mrs.Pillais vist that MR was allowed to get away with Crimes against Humanity.

I want to say a sincere thanks for what you have written above and if were I will ignore what the Morons have said above and take it on your chin.
Good luck for your future and see you in the promised land.

Donald, This is my real name and the name of the tea boutique is called Sirisanda. It is forty rupees for milk tea. I am here. You are one who write about funerals and all that crap when someone speak of some issue with a message to those who can understand.. not me. also received your mail doing round here. Full of lies. I check everything. Lies, lies and damn lies. Whats the matter with you? Idont even feel sorry for you. You are well past that my friend. Too late now. All the dates and places in that mail are WRONG. I challenge you. Some of the incidents and dates are times when this family was not even here.Others are imaginary and in your head only. i will not be surprised if most of the family has ever met you or even heard about you.So write your book and be damned. Only your pants will be taken to court and cleaned up. Stay where you are and throw all the excreta.no one sane accept yours. nothing sticks even.i feel sorry about your brother. I can understand the injustice of that but you must do something about that. dont just blame the whole world and those who have ideas to tell us through these columns. come here and go to courts. we will also do our two cents worth for you then.and that is the truth.maybe i will even pay forty rupees for your tea.
