President Maithripala Sirisena has declared that he is not scared of chest beaters, and no matter who tries to conspire to topple the government, no one can change the government till the next parliamentary elections in 5 years.
Addressing the 19th National Convention of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress in Ampara on Saturday, Sirisena said, “Recently someone told a rally in Colombo to let him take over the government so he can rule the country again. He was beating his chest while saying this. We saw how this person ruled the country; even I was part of his government at one point. But, I am not scared of anyone who beats their chest, that was why I left and formed my own government.”
Sirisena, who was the chief guest at the event, also said that those who were defeated by the masses will remain defeated.
“Today there is freedom in the country to hold protest marches, rallies and meetings, and none of the leaders who organize these events have to worry about being abducted by white vans, or their homes been stoned. Today everyone and anyone has the freedom to voice their opinions including disapproval, and don’t have to live in fear,” Sirisena said.
Speaking further on the recent nationwide blackouts and the subsequent power cuts for almost a week, the President said that according to the Ceylon Electricity Board engineers, the current situation has happened because none of the power machinery has been upgraded over the past ten years. “This is why the country has had to undergo such a situation,” he added.

Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga says that stealing was the main policy and philosophy of the previous government under Mahinda Rajapaksa and conceded that corrupt individuals still occupy certain sections of the incumbent administration.
“There are still thieves in certain sections of even this government. I won’t say no.” However, unlike the previous government stealing is not the main policy and philosophy of this government and we will not allow that to happen, she said.
Addressing an event in Kelaniya today, she said that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa prohibited all MPs, Provincial Councillors and Pradeshiya Sabha members from speaking to her and all the media were banned from even saying her name during his reign.
Kumaratunga said that she refused to give interviews Sri Lankan media and foreign media during the past 9 years because she would have had to speak about the wrongs committed by the Rajapaksa government.
She said that none of the party seniors even wanted to know whether she was dead or alive during that period or bothered to even send a card once a year for the fear of losing their posts and seats.
She stated that if the Rajapaksa government was in power for another year, the country’s economy would have completely collapsed. “It would have been unable to even pay the public sector wages.”
Kumaratunga stated that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) was completely ignored and left to its destruction by its then leaders.

Dikwella Police (in the Matara District) have arrested a man who had kept a 15-year-old girl by force and allegedly tortured her, even forcing her to drink urine and beer.
The girl, who had escaped from him, had complained to the police that she had been assaulted with a wooden pole and an iron rod. She had complained that she was forced to drink beer and urine. She had suffered similar il-usage at his hands, earlier as well.
Police had recovered the iron rod and other items. The man had kept this girl as his mistress for three months. The suspect, age 21, is a fisherman of the area .

During the P/election, we remember you blame Mr. Rajapaksa for your failures too; you were the Health Minister but you said you were handicapped and could not do anything due to Mr. Rajapaksa’s high hand. You are the President now! Please tell me a single sector (including health) that has improved during your 14 month rule? Even your Health Minister does not rely on our health system and had to be sent to Singapore for treatments. Are you planning to send every sick citizen of SL to Singapore? Is that how you plan to improve the Health sector under Yahapalanaya?
You may quote certain legislation, parliamentary acts and independent commissions but in practice those are limited to books; culprits in your government do the same as those under the Rajapaksas had been doing before. If you don’t believe me just read Infolanka.com and TC’s recent articles on your ministers to refresh your mind.
You yourself turned a blind eye to your ministers’ misuse of power and authority because they were your friends or the friends of the Premier. Some threaten journalists and use unprintable swears to address professionals! Your foreign minister has ridiculed you in front of foreign politicians and media. I would not say anything about nepotism here!
Please don’t take me wrong! The poor people in Sri Lanka can wait; honestly, they waited some 30 years for a leader with a spine to appear and finish the war!
