A visibly irked President Mahinda Rajapaksa last night said that he is in possession of ‘files’ on all those who defected from the government last Friday in support of former Minister Maithripala Sirisena‘s candidacy as the common candidate at the upcoming presidential polls.
Commenting on the Ministers and MPs who left his government, President Rajapaksa yesterday in Anuradhapura, said, “They should not be throwing stones from inside glass houses. I have details about them all and also ‘files’ containing certain information about them. But I will not use them because I am not that type of a person – I do not seek revenge.”
He added that he is not the first person to be betrayed in this manner and pointed that giants of the SLFP including Sirima Bandaranaike had to face similar disappointments from those closest to her in her political career including her daughter, former president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.
“CBK mocked Mrs. Bandaranaike, defected and formed her own political party. So people just come and go but unlike others, I never left the party or abandoned it at any point,” he said adding that it is he who worked hard into increasing the number of SLFP MPs from 57 to 127 in the parliament after CBK left.
President Rajapaksa also added that he has always maintained that in his government, anyone is free to join and leave as they please.
“The doors of my government are like salon doors and they will continue to be so. Those who left will have no future but those who remain and join, will benefit well,” he added.

This entire operation was coordinated by Majintha Joseph Parakrama Jayasinghe who works in the Protocol Department of the Foreign Ministry.

How come they never acknowledge the existence of files in the past nine years. Did they over look the files during clan’s rule? Did they rediscover them only now? Did they create new files?
All were in it together. Their claim to innocence will not wash even if they join the opposition at the eleventh hour. UNP should take a tough line on party hoppers. Do these party hoppers believe that every crime that they committed and good life they enjoyed while they were with clan would be forgotten and forgiven by the people. The party hoppers trying to position themselves not only for a better future under RW but also absolve their past crimes.
Are these shameless criminals creating a win win situation only for themselves? The best and proper action would be for them to resign from their positions whatever it is that they hold, renounce their power, wealth and join a monastery in Lumbini, Himalaya, Mecca, Bethlehem, Trier (Rhineland-Palatinate – where Karl Marx was born) away from this island.

No ruler earnest about his avocation will fail to have files on those sharing state authority. President’s statement is not a revelation but is commonplace. It is with these defiling swords of Damocles that they are kept in their tracks. Yet a moment comes when they say enough is enough. Limits to tolerance and they make bold to assert, this much and no more. They desert the befouled air, for the fresh and the life giving.
In 1951, when three years of constricted existence made further continuance seem futile, SWRD Bandaranaike with his sense of ascendancy in the Party and in the country led the revolt, mustered his followers, crossed the floor, founded the SLFP, captured power in 1956 and became Prime Minister.
Was SWRD considered a traitor though he was the unquestioned leader? Neither were his acolytes who trailed him treated as deserters. The followers included DA Rajapakse Father of the incumbent President. He was not maligned as a defector. There was no gnashing of teeth by DS. They had no files flung at them to defile their reputation. Nor were they threatened with reprisals. The group was treated as a party that would revitalze the democratic process.
What is this vile threat of files? What he has maintained on paper, they have stored in their memory. Will any voter like the sanctum of governance to be akin to a salon, a place for the most prosaic activity? What value Plato and Aristotle placed on politics!. How much deference to the palladium of law and the temple of Justice! Is the polity to lament “Thou art fled to…”?
