A visibly irked President Mahinda Rajapaksa last night said that he is in possession of ‘files’ on all those who defected from the government last Friday in support of former Minister Maithripala Sirisena‘s candidacy as the common candidate at the upcoming presidential polls.
Commenting on the Ministers and MPs who left his government, President Rajapaksa yesterday in Anuradhapura, said, “They should not be throwing stones from inside glass houses. I have details about them all and also ‘files’ containing certain information about them. But I will not use them because I am not that type of a person – I do not seek revenge.”
He added that he is not the first person to be betrayed in this manner and pointed that giants of the SLFP including Sirima Bandaranaike had to face similar disappointments from those closest to her in her political career including her daughter, former president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.
“CBK mocked Mrs. Bandaranaike, defected and formed her own political party. So people just come and go but unlike others, I never left the party or abandoned it at any point,” he said adding that it is he who worked hard into increasing the number of SLFP MPs from 57 to 127 in the parliament after CBK left.
President Rajapaksa also added that he has always maintained that in his government, anyone is free to join and leave as they please.
“The doors of my government are like salon doors and they will continue to be so. Those who left will have no future but those who remain and join, will benefit well,” he added.

SLFP founder SWRD is the one who first crossed the floor of the House from the government party to the opposition. He is the one who started this trend. Even though MR says he has not changed parties, can he say that about his father, another cross-over in 1951. So what is wrong in Mathri’s cross-over? (Can remember MR getting his supporters to attack Mangala of his father crossing-over.) When the Referendum was announced he wanted every Govt MP to sign an undated letter of resignation which he would keep and date at his will. Anyone who refused to sign such a letter or seemed un happy, JR just held up a file and said: “I have a file” ion you. That was enough. Not many people will have been surprised with what MR is reported as having said – about having in his possession, files on the defectors. Many believe most of MR’s ministers are not clean and there would naturally be a lot of dirt on them; so, MR’s reported remarks only serve to confirm popular belief. What has also been widely discussed in public is that MR will have taken advantage of the dirt on these fellows to secure their loyalty, by directly or indirectly telling them, never mind, no action will be taken against them.
What must surprise us however is that MR should see fit to make such an self incriminating statement in public, which shows him in as much poor light as the defectors whom he has criticised. So, we have the President, himself, acknowledging he was surrounded by people with questionable records? And, has he not perverted the course of justice by ‘harbouring’ crooks and not seeing that proper action was taken against them?
It is said that the late Edgar Hoover who was head of the American FBI for many years had a ‘hold’ over some important politicians because of the dossiers he kept of their private lives. But then it eventually transpired that there had also been maintained elsewhere, an equally damning dossier on Hoover himself!

Former long standing FBI Director Edgar J Hoover kept dossiers of all the congressmen & the powerful in USA. He was the Kingmaker & brokered deals even with the Mafia but it came to light only recently due to the freedom of speech act. However, the President of SL seems to be so dumb that what he is saying in public is pretty much blackmail. If he was aware that his Ministers & MPs were dishonest, as their leader, shouldn’t he have at least got them to correct their ways instead of turning a blind eye or was it his strategy of ‘giving enough rope to hang themselves’ if the situation arises? If he was unable to keep his people in the straight & narrow as expected from a honorable head of state, then obviously he was a poor leader, not able to influence his people. MR has shot his own foot but it seems that the average person in SL has not realized it.
As for Maithripala Sirisens, he is just another opportunist who CBK expects to be her lap dog & her ticket to get back to politics which is to buy time to groom her son to continue the dynasty.
