President Maithripala Sirisena participating in a ceremony to mark the 69th anniversary of the UNP at party headquarters “Sirikotha” today said that the sacrifices the UNP made to make him (Sirisena) the President will be etched upon his heart for ever.
Sirisena went on to say that the new national government formed between the UNP and SLFP had many challenges to face and foremost among them was the one posed by the rebel UPFA faction supporting former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
“Don’t think the enemies are weak as there are pro-Eelam forces on one hand while forces belonging to the last regime are also waiting to sabotage the destiny of the national government,” he said.
Sirisena added that the consensus reached between the hierarchy of both the UNP and the SLFP should now filter to the grass-root level in order to overcome the obstacles.
The President also said that he decided to be the common opposition candidate following meetings with the former President Chandrika Kumaratunga and then opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Sirisena said that it was his view that the two parties should govern the country in the next five years.
