Basil Rajapaksa laid to rest rumors of a rift between himself and his brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa with respect to who would be the presidential candidate of the Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna, saying that it will be former president and their elder brother Mahinda who will nominate the candidate.

In an interview with the ‘Ada’ newspaper (June 29), Basil said that his primary concern is to defeat this government and it doesn’t matter if it is Gotabaya or anyone else who contests the next presidential election.
‘No one has suffered at the hands of this government as I have. If one of my brothers comes forward I can play a more prominent role. The relationship I have with President Mahinda is the same as the one I have with Gotabaya. We went to school together, we were in the USA together. Since Mahinda and Chamal were older they were a bit distant to us. The truth is that if Gotabaya comes forward it will be I who will run the country since he is new to politics.’
Basil also stated that past mistakes cannot be repeated because they contributed to the defeat of Mahinda Rajapaka.
He revealed that he had come to an understanding with Gotabaya regarding the presidential election. ‘We don’t know who Mahinda will nominate or if either of us would be nominated either. However, there will be no conflict between us. May the gods protect those who envisage such a division.’

Yes, this is outrageous. How dare Basil talks like that as if this country is belonging to him? I am fuming too.
Nobody likes him other than a few in the JO and others who were benefited from him during the period 2010-2015.
This is the fault of all Wimal’s and other bona fide JO who were with Mahinda since his defeat, for accepting Gotabhaya and Basil who ran away leaving Mahinda.
The first division in JO was caused by Basil and the second was by Gotabhaya.

This talk is more than enough for even Mahinda supporters to not to vote any Rajapaksa from the JO/SLPP as they all anticipated Mahinda to run the country despite his legal hurdle to run for Presidency. I knew this would happen. MR will be forced to retire from politics by Gotabahaya and Basil. Used and discarded. This will break people’s hearts.
There is no need to elaborate, MR/JO will lose the Presidential election because their own supporters will stay at home refraining from voting.
Over to you Wimal. You are going to be the biggest loser who initiated Mahinda Sulanga on February 18, 2015 as people who you rallied around Mahinda will break camp.

Apropos Prabaharan, he became a ‘leader’ of his people by default, and he was, in my opinion brave and courageous but misguided. It is well known that he was suspicious of the many who gave him advice, and, having set his goal as winning Eelam for his people, he could never understand or accept a pragmatic solution to avoid the inevitable. His ruthlessness in dealing with any challenge to his leadership was unfortunate, and in the circumstances lost him friends and respect. I would never go so far as to describe Prabaharan a ‘Hitler’. His only crime was to be semi-literate, and not be able to compute the odds against him succeeding in his quest, thereby resulting in his inglorious ending, much misery, and setting back the aspirations of his people by many decades.

I saw a news item where it says Gotabhaya is conducting seminars for villagers with Dr. Palitha Kohona and Dr. Godahewa (I don’t remember his first name.) I couldn’t suppress a smile. No offence but what can villagers do with those who have Doctorates? I don’t see any difference between them and Ranil/his top Ministers. They all are Kalu Suddas including Gotabhaya. 82% of the population in Sri Lanka is concentrated in villages. What villagers need is a genuine village man like Mahinda who could feel their pulse. Someone whose warmth is felt by villagers.
There was a joke about Ranil, a long time ago. When going rounds on canvassing in villages Ranil had visited a small house with coconut palm thatched-roof. When a woman came out of the house, he had asked “Hello Mrs. Ranmenika, ko Mr. Ranmenika, kumburata gihillada?” The woman has replied “Muk kivva Mahattayaa?”
