Sri Lanka’s controversial former Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa has said that ‘many people’ want him to run for the next Presidential Election.

“People living in Sri Lanka and outside the country have asked me to come forward to contest the next Presidential Election,” he said in an interview with the Ceylon Today newspaper.
Citing that the country is today at a standstill, Rajapaksa went on to say that if he becomes President, he will put the current ‘mess’ on the right track. “We are going on reverse, look at the economy and the development. Everything is at a standstill.”
He however added that he has not still decided whether to heed the public’s request to contest the next Presidential Election. “I have not decided yet, but it will depend on the situation and the circumstances. I just cannot plan now. I am not a politician,” he said.
Rajapaksa also claimed that the public opinion today is that there is no leadership in the country. “That’s what many believe. This is not my idea, but theirs. They say there is no one today to lead the people.
They say they don’t know what is happening to this country,” he said.
Rajapaksa added that it was because of ‘them’ that today some Presidents can go to Jaffna and address the public. “We paved the way for that,” he said.

I joined the delegation at the invitation of my student and friend, Dr.Noel Nadesan of Australia. I paid for my air tickets. I stayed at the Mount Lavinia Hitel, although my family was living in Colombo, because the government insisted on it for security reasons connected with LTTE threats. Because I went, I heard and I saw the situation in the Vanni in person, as the war was ending and met many politicians, including President Mahinda Rajapakse.
The result of that visit and subsequent visits to the Vanni and the East were my many reports on the post-war situation and the following road map I presented to the government and published:

I went, I heard, I saw, I formed my impressions and these became the basis of my subsequent stance. What I heard from the people in the Vanni, confirmed my impressions of the LTTE and other Para-military groups. I met the LTTE child cadres in the Ambepussa rehabilitation camp and was shocked. I saw the reality in the IDP camps and was appalled at the nasty propaganda at work abroad. I also saw the extent of the destruction and devastatation and was able to comprehend the enormity of what happened. What I heard directly from the victims of the war and saw in them, taught me the enormity of the human tragedy. I also was able to spell out the reality in my closing remarks at the end of the dialogue with the government in terms the government would not have expected.
I was also convinced that only the government had the capacity, resources and ability to mobilize resources, to alleviate the suffering of the war-affected in the short, medium and long term.
I have subsequently lauded the government for what it succeeded in doing in the short and medium term for the war-affected and the North and East. However, I was angry that the MR government miserably failed in achieving long term objectives and used the Tissa Vithana Select Commitee to mislead everyone, including the International Community.
I am glad I was able to participate in the dialogue you refer and the opportunity it offered to meet a wide array of senior politicians and officials in the South, visit the Vanni and the East and draw my own conclusions. This was a God-sent opportunity, I am glad I did not miss.

After all, they should be equally proud of that “nobel” venture too and should have no reservations in getting named, right?
You once wrote that MR has already delivered 75% of what he had promised the Tamils. Do you not remember, several months after your initial veneration of the regime, you yourself wrote in these columns to the effect “now, even the worst of fools have realized that Rajapakse’s cannot be trusted”?!
(Incidentally, do you have any records — name, age, and any other traceable info — of the children that you met at Ambepussa? Can you not make available that info which may help some parents still searching for the “missing”?)
You have resisted relentlessly for five years or more in providing any details on your and MR’s agendas behind your trip. It has been a monumental task extracting that info, and it is indeed your need to be secretive – it is that silence — that speaks volumes.
