If You Are Undecided, Vote For Your Future

Elections in Sri Lanka are often about default options. This is why we hear people talk about ‘the known devil’ and ‘lesser evils’. Spoilt votes and votes that don’t get cast also indicate a certain dissatisfaction with the options available.

It’s the same this time too. It would be a brave person indeed who can stand up and say such and such a party or so and so has an unblemished record in serving the people. The truth is, none of the major parties have squeaky clean histories. Neither do the candidates they’ve put forward. All major parties in the fray, the United National Party (UNP), United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) are guilt of excesses they would like the voter to forget on August 17, 2015.

Which of these parties are not home to crooks and murderers, double-crossers, back-room deal-makers and common thugs? The two major parties have at various times played footsie with the LTTE. They’ve at various times violated the fundamental rights of citizens. They have fired upon protestors. We know of Rathupaswala. We also know of the 88-89. On the day the Indo-Lanka Accord was signed itself 21 people were killed at a demonstration near the Pettah bo tree. We know about the July 83 riots and the role of the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya. Both parties have gagged the media, one way or the other, the UNP with censorship, threat, abduction and murder and the UPFA with ‘ownership’ added to that heady mix.

Dr. Ajith C. S. Perera

Although the UNP tried to shift blame on that party for the bheeshanaya by calling it ‘JVP time’, the UNP was THE First Respondent in that particular slew of crimes against humanity. The JVP is not innocent either. Students, lecturers, government servants, political opponents, bhikkus and trade union leaders fell in their hundreds to the JVP’s galkatas brand of ‘democracy’ back then. Banks were robbed, public property destroyed. They were no saints then and if you are inclined to vote for the JVP, check what the rathu sahodarayas do to those who oppose them in universities these days. You will think again.

We need not elaborate. It’s all about devils, known and unknown. It’s all about degrees of evil. People know all this and yet vote overwhelmingly for these parties. They play relative merits. They talk about the requirements of the political moment. No, it’s not that they are stupid. They are rational. They have their reasons. On the other hand if the evil and the devils stump you, if you are confused or are finding it really hard to shed embarrassment and vote for these known confidence tricksters, what do you do? I submit that if you don’t want to stay at home or don’t want to spoil your vote, you could vote for your future.

What is your future? Think about it this way. There’s one thing that you can bet on. Death. And the longer you live, there’s another thing you can count on. Wear and tear. We all grow old. We become hard of hearing. Our eyesight gets weak. The organs start playing up. We lost the spring in our step. We start forgetting things.

The truth is we don’t have to be old for us to become less than who we are. We all fall sick. That’s a given. Each time we fall ill we are less able than when we are healthy. Just think of the last time you had a bad cold, were down with fever or simply suffered a headache. You just can’t function as you would have had you not been unwell, right? At any given moment in time a considerable portion of the population, therefore, are less-abled than the rest. That’s 20% of the population, folks.

To put some perspective on the matter, consider that a group claiming to represent a minority made of less than 10% o the population wanted to carve out a separate state that would have cut Sri Lanka’s land mass in half and led to the loss of two-thirds of the coastline. Other extreme groups make similar demands. All major parties not only listen to these voices but accommodate representatives in national lists and if it comes to that cabinets.

They have no ear for those with limitations in ability, temporary or permanent. That’s for the Ministry of Social Services, they say. That’s for NGOs. But they don’t understand that sooner or later they too will slip, fall and be subject to the natural laws of decay. They will have to deal with diabetes, arthritis, sore joints, vertigo and such. Well, not just them. YOU too will have to deal with it. That’s your future.

Be assured ladies and gentlemen, the temporarily weak you will not be noticed by the parties mentioned above. The weak you who will not recover strength will not be heard either. Today, there’s no legislation that takes into account this community to which we’ve all belonged off and on and which will be our final ‘resting place’ one day. The entire public service is blissfully ignorant of the needs of those with limited abilities, temporary or permanent. Those responsible act as though they’ve never been sick or that they’ll never suffer debilitating illnesses. They are men and women who do not see the future. They are like the politicians they’ve voted for.

You can be different. So, if you are confused, if you want to feel good about exercising your franchise and if you want true value to accrue to your vote, dump all the ‘options’ that glare at your from TV screens, newspaper ads, hoardings and posters. If you are in the Colombo and Gampaha Districts you can vote for your future. Independent Group No 12. That’s the ‘Desktop Computer’ symbol. Check them out. No devils there. Nothing evil. All wholesome.

    Thanks Malinda,

My vote was for the UPFA – but this article of yours has had me change my mind.

You are quite correct when you imply that I should NOT vote for the UPFA.

Malinda Seneviratne, Shill and white-Washer of Mahinda Rajapaksa,

RE: If You Are Undecided, Vote For Your Future

Like the title, but for change do BIT vote for UPFA or Mahinda Rajapaksa and his cronies.

I would say, If You Are Undecided, Vote For Change, Away from Mahinda Rajapaksa and his cronies, or do not vote for UPFA.

This is what CBK is saying:

Vote for any animal but not betel leaf: CBK
      2015-08-13 10:20:54

      http://www.dailymirror.lk/83353/animal-but-not-betel-leaf-cbk

Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike said the people could vote for any animal and not for the betel leaf symbol or the hand symbol at the forthcoming general elections if they wanted to save the country from corrupt individuals.

Addressing several public meetings in Embilipitiya and the Eheliyagoda towns the former President said the UNP, the Hela Urumaya, a faction of the SLFP and the Leftist parties had joined hands on January 8 to bring about a change and to form a national government.

The JVP was not directly involved in the campaign but it supported.

“Again the main constituent parties of the national government are contesting the general elections to take forward the policy of national government.
“Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka’s Democratic Party is contesting the election in the hope of winning as a separate group. However, he will support the national government that would be formed after the election.

“The corrupt rule should be wiped out and a new system of government without political differences should be formed. It is the duty of the people to support forces that have undertaken to move forward that object.

“On the other hand, my party has fallen prey to robbers. The situation is beyond the control of President Maithripala Sirisena, even though he is the Chairman.
“The corrupt individuals cannot be expected to lead the country along the right path. The Citizen’s Force is not affiliated to any political party. A vote for the UNP is not a vote for a political party but for a movement that could build the country. Now democracy in the country has been restored and we can chase away the corrupt representatives,” she said. (Ajithlal Shantha Udaya)

You are perfectly right in asking “Which of these parties are not home to crooks and murderers, double-crossers, back-room deal-makers and common thugs?”

You find crooks and murderers in all Sri Lankan parties. Even TNA is no exception. Among the TNA candidates, you will find the murderous “Mandayan Group” leader who incidentally is the leader of one the four constituent parties of TNA contesting in the Jaffna district.Several other TELO, EPRLF and PLOTE guys who in the past had been engaging in murders, abductions and extortions are contesting under the TNA banner in several other NE districts. People in the North East know who these guys are and their background. Compared to them those former LTTE cadres contesting under the banner of ‘Crusaders for Democracy’ appear to be a shade better because they did what they did because of the orders of LTTE leadership.

Given this sordid background of contestants, choice for the people is first to identify the party that will do good for the country and less damage and then to give their preference votes to candidates of that party who are seen as less evil.

UPFA will get 8 districts out of the 22.galle,matara,hambantota,kalutara,
ratnapura, moneragala, kurunegala, anuradhapura.UNF will get9 districts colombo, gampaha, kandy, kegalle, matale, polonnaruwa, puttalam, badulla, nuwaraeliya.UNF should be able to get at least 5 seats more than UPFA and will be able to govern with crossovers and other parties supporting it.

The problem for UPFA is it is isolated.Nobody else to support it.

It is amazing how some of these so called “journalists” have NO SHAME at all. This guy milinda is a very well known boot licker (i cant use the correct word because if will get censored) of MR.

Today milinda knows the fate that awaits his master – MR. So he is indulging in one last attempt to somehow save his master by asking the undecided to vote for some “phantom candidate” just like that fake sirisena they tried last time.

All i have to say to 3rd rate jokers like Milinda is, please go fly a kite. We are not fools.

Unlike the Fake Sirisena, dear Mr Nizam, for 18 years in this Country I have fought for the Disabled even fighting a Battle at SC. As NO POLITICAL PARTY gave as any opening to BE THE VOICE for the 4 Million People with Restricted Ability who has NO VOICE, **ONLY** I came to contest as an Independent, and my Wikipedia will tell you what MY committed services for the Seniors and dis-Abled are. I feel very sad, perhaps you as a CITIZEN are unfamiliar to the cries I made over 20 years BUT fell on deaf ears of **ALL** political parties thus I am NO FAKE JOKER OF ANYONE. The day Your Ability gets restricted even for a day, THEN…. you will open eyes to know the plight YOU are facing as a THIRD CLASS Citix=zen which I am trying to change!
      Good Night!

So are we to take it that you will practice what you preach and vote for where there are ” No devils . Nothing evil. All wholesome”? And if so, what were you doing all these years pandering to “the known devil” (as he described himself)?

Or is this just another exercise in attempted deception to reduce the votes for the “unknown devils”?

    Malinda,
Don’t woory. you are caught. You go round and round and come back to Mahinda and racism. You talked about UNP,UPFA, JVP but did not speak about Mahinda Party. UPFA has two factions, one is Mahinda party and other is Maithiri party. Mahinda party ruled for last 10 years and his violation of human rights are great compared to previous SLFP, UNP, JVP. Mahinda party lost it election only just seven months before and people need time to assess his 10 year performance including white vans, China deals, and Family deals because all his family members had 90% share of public wealth under their control. There are number of murders, particularly Rugby players need to be assessed. You can’t do them within 7 months. Mahinda is a tired person and he needs some rest as well.It appears that there is no one in the Mahinda party has the ability to become ministers and they can’t function without Mahinda. So, let people to choose something different and see how it goes for another 5 years. You may also need a new laptop.
