Hinting at his friend turned foe, Maithripala Sirisena, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that he was not a backstabber and hence Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe can go to Switzerland without worrying about his government toppling.
“He can go and come, because whatever will happen will happen only when he (Ranil) is here, because I am not a backstabber,” Rajapaksa told reporters, in response to a recent statement made by Wickremesinghe who gave Rajapaksa a week to topple the government while he was away in Switzerland at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
The former President claimed that whatever would happen, it will happen democratically. “Already one has resigned, so wait and see what will happen, it will happen soon,” he said.
In May last year, Mahinda Rajapaksa said that not only him, but even the public had been deceived by one man, who everyone trusted – President Maithripala Sirisena. “The same man I trusted, ate hoppers with me and then put a vettu, now the same thing has happened to all of you,” he told an event in Kurunegala.
Meanwhile addressing the weekly cabinet meeting, Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Rajitha Senaratne said that even though Rajapaksa made similar promises in 2015 and 2016, nothing happened. He added that it was not possible to topple the coalition government.
Meanwhile, Piyankara Jayaratne, who resigned from his ministerial portfolio as State Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government claimed that several more SLFP MPs holding ministerial and state ministerial positions were planning to resign from their ministry positions soon.
