In the town that cradled Sri Lankan Tamil militancy and was the birthplace of its most ferocious exponent Velupillai Prabakaran, a legend of a different kind is now getting belated attention.
VVT, as this north Jaffna coastal town is known, is planning to erect a statue to a less famous son, V.S. Kumar Anandan, who did a record two-way swim from Thalaimannar in Sri Lanka to Dhanushkodi on the Tamil Nadu coast.
Anandan’s son, Rajan, is the present head of Google India.
“Recently, we had a small ceremony to honour Kumar Anandan. We’re now discussing erecting a statue to him. His wife’s family has promised to help with funds,”’ said M.K. Shivajilingam, once a militant in TELO, and now a member of the VVT Urban Council.

i didn’t know much about kumar anandan. i have , however, come to know now that he died while attempting to swim english channel. i didn’t know rajan anandan , google head for india is his son.

I wouldnt advise this erection of a statue at present.
There have been destruction of statues in jaffna in the recent past.
Even Mahatma Ghandi’s statue was ‘beheaded’.
The perpetraters are not known,and the “authorities” are helpless.

prabhakaran was a wonderful human being. if not for him sinhala primitive barbarians would have killed all tamils. prabha protected tamil people for 30 years from chingala vultures. what he did to the chingala swines was perfect. he taught them a lesson that they will never forget in a million years. there are more prabhas waiting in the wings to teach some more hard lessons to sinhala [Edited out]. sinhala barbarians are the most uncivilsed animals in the world.
