It Was Gaddafi Who Put His Arm Around Me: Mahinda

Former President and Kurunegala District MP Mahinda Rajapaksa today criticised the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) for hailing the adoption of the UNHRC resolution in Geneva as a “Great Victory” for the country.

“Posters of the UPFA have appeared on the streets hailing the government for delivering the country from the ‘imperialist death trap’ in Geneva. Such statements sit oddly beside the operative paragraphs of the resolution mentioned above. The mismatch between the provisions of the resolution that was passed and the government’s present mixed signals and rhetoric may be due to a belated realisation that nothing has been gained by Sri Lanka joining the USA as a co-sponsor of this resolution except to commit the government to a course of action which runs contrary to the interests of this country and is therefore politically unfeasible,” Rajapaksa said issuing a statement today.

Rajapaksa_GaddafiRajapaksa said that operative paragraph 6 of the resolution affirms the importance of the participation of foreign judges, prosecutors, lawyers and investigators in the Sri Lankan judicial mechanism to be set up to investigate alleged human rights abuses during the war.

Meanwhile in operative paragraph 8 Rajapaksa said encouraged the Sri Lankan government to remove individuals in the armed forces suspected of human rights violations through an administrative vetting process even if there is insufficient evidence to charge them in a court of law.

Operative paragraph 4 welcomes the government’s willingness to allow the various judicial and other mechanisms it intends to establish to deal with the past, to obtain financial assistance from overseas, which means that these supposedly Sri Lankan mechanisms will be paid for and maintained by foreign powers,” the former President said in his statement.

Full Statement;

Though the passage of the US sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka in the UNHRC without a vote last Thursday is being hailed as a diplomatic victory for Sri Lanka, I am unable to share that view.
Operative paragraph 6 of the resolution affirms the importance of the participation of foreign judges, prosecutors, lawyers and investigators in the Sri Lankan judicial mechanism to be set up to investigate alleged human rights abuses during the war. Operative paragraph 8 encourages the Sri Lankan government to remove individuals in the armed forces suspected of human rights violations through an administrative vetting process even if there is insufficient evidence to charge them in a court of law. Operative paragraph 4 welcomes the government’s willingness to allow the various judicial and other mechanisms it intends to establish to deal with the past, to obtain financial assistance from overseas, which means that these supposedly Sri Lankan mechanisms will be paid for and maintained by foreign powers.

Those are just a few of the objectionable operative paragraphs in that resolution. After its passage, the Prime Minister said that Sri Lanka has now been ‘taken off the agenda in the UNHRC’.  Posters of the UPFA have appeared on the streets hailing the government for delivering the country from the ‘imperialist death trap’ in Geneva. Such statements sit oddly beside the operative paragraphs of the resolution mentioned above. The mismatch between the provisions of the resolution that was passed and the government’s present mixed signals and rhetoric may be due to a belated realisation that nothing has been gained by Sri Lanka joining the USA as a co-sponsor of this resolution except to commit the government to a course of action which runs contrary to the interests of this country and is therefore politically unfeasible.

I acknowledge that there are times when foreign powers try to foist their way of thinking upon other nations and the country at the receiving end has to find ways of dealing with the situation.  The first duty of the Sri Lankan government is to see to it that the interests of our war heroes are looked after.  Operative paragraphs 6 & 8 of the resolution run directly contrary to that sacred duty. I regret to note that there is an attempt to whitewash the unfavourable resolution in Geneva by claiming that this was the best that could be achieved and that things could have been far worse with the near certainty of economic sanctions if my government had been still in power. The withdrawal of the GSP+ trade concession in 2010 and the ban on Sri Lankan fish imports to the EU in January 2015 were mentioned as the forerunners of the sanctions that were to be imposed on Sri Lanka.

The public should be made aware that the ban on fish imports to the EU this year was due to issues relating to ‘illegal, unreported and unregulated’ fishing in the Indian Ocean in contravention of the rules of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission and had nothing at all to do with politics or human rights.  As for GSP+, this is a special trade concession of doubtful utility which gives the EU a political handle over the recipient country. In 2010 when GSP+ came up for its quinquennial review and this was being used to impose the EU’s will on Sri Lanka, my government made a conscious decision not to reapply for GSP+. Even after this trade concession was withdrawn, my government ensured that apparel exports to the EU kept growing at more than 6% a year. It should be noted that no major exporting country in Asia has applied for GSP+ due to the political strings attached to it.

It was also said that I had antagonised the Western nations by being photographed with my arm around Muammar Gaddafi of Libya. It is actually Gaddafi who has his arm on my shoulder in that much publicised photograph. In the last months of the war in 2009 when Sri Lanka was fast losing foreign reserves due to the severe global economic recession that year and the IMF under pressure from the Western nations was delaying the standby facility that we were entitled to, Muammar Gaddafi agreed to lend 500 million USD to Sri Lanka in response to a single phone call from me. If not for that pledge, the economy would have collapsed before the war could be won.

It was also said that when foreign dignitaries came to Sri Lanka to persuade us to stop the war, I had deliberately insulted them by taking them to Embilipitiya and giving them manioc to eat, and that that resentment was motivating the Western countries to pass resolutions against us. I have no recollection what was on the menu when the British and French foreign ministers met me in the final days of the war demanding that I halt hostilities. But it is certainly true that I refused point blank to halt the war. It is because I did not buckle under foreign pressure that this country is free of terrorism today.  Governments are elected by the people of Sri Lanka to do what is best for the country and not to agree to everything said by foreign powers. That applies to the resolution that has just been passed in Geneva as well.

I cannot believe CT going to this low level of publishing this kind of face saving articles for this dictator.

Please note the mainstream media today reported how Rajapaksas earned a profit upto LKR3000 from CSN after getting the Cricket Worldcup broadcasting rights from state run Rupavahini.

Birds of a feather flock together – this was painted by lanken media as if Libya would join in lanken development projects. This is how Mahinda Buruwa betrayed the nation. Innocient nation, an another developing folks that had a greater acceptance in the europe. At the time, I started my graduate courses in Eu- there were profs that kept on saying that their holiday paradise to that time, was srilanka. They loved srilanka as they do it to Majorca or Mallorca. If we could win their hearts and mind today, I have no doubt, those people would visit back ot the country since they once loved the island landscapes and people.

Mahendra Percy, if you did not illegally spend Rs280 billion of public money without parliament approval, you would not have had to give any calls to Gadafi for money. Seems like you ran our economy like a boutique (petti- kade). Thank god, the buffalo has been returned to the Hambanthota bog house.

Well, its odd because Mahinda was trying diplomacy with US/Nato countries too.

So in one hand he appears to reject their demands. In another he was using Sajin Vaas to pull strings with the US Administration via PR firms.

Central Bank wired out to Nelson Mullins Riley and Scarborough, LLP — the company at which MMP Sajin de Vass Gunawardena’s good friend, Vinoda Basnayake, works — US$ 2,650,000 (Rs. 372,298,500)in October last year. The Sunday Times has an invoice for another US$ 1,500,000 payable to the same company. That is a total of US$ 4,150,000 (Rs. 583,033,500).

    http://www.sundaytimes.lk/150920/news/millions-paid-to-us-lobby-firms-to-do-basic-embassy-work-164927.html

Although instead of diplomacy Sajin Vass as laundering the money via his friend Vinoda Basnayake in NY.

As usual MR has to be critical after all the mess left by him and his aides. If by chance he had continued as President for 3rd term the resolution by UNHrC would have been veryndifferent.

Hey Mr. Rajapakse, We heard you well. You whine and complain. Wev heard enough. Please tell us what the solution is? Are we supposed to leave all the mess you created and branded as a pariah state or we ask the international community to give its own verdict through the UNHRC. So he can join Radavan Karadich, charles Taylor etc. Or else, Are you scaring the Armed forces, so that your beloved brother can manipulate them to staging a coup and you can start looting the country again.

This is it. These Rajapaksas and their cronies are really capable of turning things around by staging a coup. Both MS and RW are leaving room for it without taking these rogues to custody and silencing the rest of the rubbish. with the existing and available evidence (from Sajin Vaas) Thajudeen etc etc etc etc. They will do everything possible to get out of this mess they have created as otherwise there is no hope for them. This is a very dangerous situation so everyone beware.

      @Barus

Well, we all saw what happened when media outlets were pro-establishment, did we not ?

So the question I have for you is: Do you want the media to give free-passes for our politicians so they can do whatever they want ?

Or do you want the free-passes for politicians of your choice only ?

      Do tell…

Gadhaffi was not a bad man.

Libya and most arab countries are very unstable under western democracies because there are so many tribes involved in the country.

Gadhaffi brought a useless country to one which had very high GDP. People were having a better living standards.

Gadhaffi, just like Cuba or IRan tried their best to be friendly to the west. but, the west wanted submissive leaders who would chant only the what west wanted.

the bad things Gadhaffi did were he did not buy unwanted fighter jets from the bankrupt France because that is how the France/chairman of France at that time wanted. Ghadaffi also proposed to use the GOLD as currency instead of PETRO DOLLAR that would have hit the Most democratic country in the world very hard.that is why they used their own to kill him.

Gadaffi was merciless on those who opposed him but a benevolent dictator to those who did not. This is the style in all Arab countries only th egegree varies. Being a rich country he could shower many benefits on the people.

However, his end did not have anything to do with his undemocratic ways. It had everything to do with money and and the West removed him in the most obnoxious and cruel way when the money flow was being threatened.

this article should be by a media organization or a journalist who gets funding from the west.

    that is democracy.

It is like freedom. You go on wanton killing and say freedom.

All to do with the Tamil desire to convert the whole of Sri Lanka to Eelam, based on ancient mythology.

West cannot rest with the Tamil diaspora working 24/7 to achieve this end.

Rajapaksa was the only leader valiant enough to take care of the 70% who were suffering, for daring to stand up for their Sinhala heritage.

Why the hell you didn’t tell that soon after the war?? You was grooming BBS from expense Libyan fund and you were boasting that Sri Lanka had a very stable economy even at the height of War.

In other words, even BBS and Gnanasara were fed by the Arab money!!!!!!

What a shame on you to misled the public with lies and brags…..

Dear Sir, Whatever said and written you did the job which nobody can do and all previous leaders and including forces failed to achieve such victory. I respect for this and some outstanding development in economy and socio-economy you did. Also I respect to you, Gota and Fonseka for the excellent job.

At the some time we should understand victory or development dose not give a license to do something else….

It was the then Ministry of External Affairs which recommended the opening of an Embassy in Tripoli. The first Ambassador was Sudantha Ganegamaarachi, a career diplomat. Most of the so called career diplomats too thought that there would be a Rajapksa dynansy for ever. So the Ambassadors first job to please the then crown prince Namal was to invite him to Libya to meet Gadhafi. Namal, Sajin Vass and Indika Karunajeewa visited Libya and they were accorded a right royal welcome by Gadhafi. Crown prince returned as a very happy person saying that he cultivated Gadhafi to Machang level. Our ambassador, a mediocre sycophant was also thrilled about his delivery. This is the type of career diplomats we have today. With the troubles in Libya they sent him to Cairo. Utter waste of public funds for setting up of a new embassy in Libya.Mangal is too soft and Ranil should identify these Rajapaksa cronies who are maintaining a close relationship with Rajapaksa clan.

The whole world knows that the West is good in divide and rule, in order to keep its power. Yet the majority can’t work together against the West. That’s the power of the West. The West plays its game not only by its power but based on human psychology as well. Hating others is easier than loving others. Therefore, the West is taking advantage of human nature and encourages the developing countries to hate each other, plus supplying arms to kill each others as well. President MR didn’t know how to deal with the smart and powerful West. He avoided smart Lankans, but believed in astrology. The West is too smart for Asians. I spent eighteen months in Asia, Asians have no chance to beat the West. The Asian leaders don’t have the knowledge to beat the West, and the West won’t allow smart Asians who have gained the knowledge in the West to help theie leaders either. The West knows how to entertain the Asian leaders’ foolishness by giving wrong information about smart Asians to create division, in order to defeat the Asian leaders. For the West, it is important to keep the developing countries’ leaders with limited knowledge, and keep the knowledgeable people like us away from those leaders, in order to rule the world.
