Jaffna – From Shell Shock To Culture Shock

By Sharmini Serasinghe

Sharmini Serasinghe

My last visit to Jaffna was almost nine years ago (2004) in an official capacity as a Director of the former Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process (SCOPP), an office that came directly under the President of Sri Lanka.

In a context of time nine years seems like a long period but in fact it is not. The Jaffna I saw then and the Jaffna I saw a fortnight ago seem like two different places. Of course nine years ago we had a Norwegian brokered cease-fire between the LTTE and the government of Sri Lanka in place. Our movements, despite a cease-fire, were under a heavy blanket of security as the LTTE violated the very spirit of the truce with impunity.

However my recent visit to the North was as a private citizen and therefore afforded me greater freedom of movement and the chance to mingle and interact with the common man of Jaffna. Of course within a short space of three days one cannot grasp much, but what I did see and hear was a revelation in more ways than one.

From what I saw, Jaffna and her people appear to be finally emerging from a shell of fear and subjugation. From a distance of 30 years ago the people of Jaffna seem to have been fast-forwarded into an alien future speeding ahead on the back of globalisation.

As to be expected with the legacy of such a phenomenon, a way of life once taboo has been thrown to the winds by the current young generation of Jaffnites. Today these young ‘guys and gals’ of Jaffna are ‘rocking it’ with the rest of their counterparts in the rest of the world.

The conservative Jaffna parent, however, who was caught up in the LTTE’s ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ not too long ago bemoans the rapid loss of cultural ethos amongst their offspring and yearns for the rigidity and conformity of the past.

Today when a male offspring turns 18 a snazzy motorbike is a must; so the parent must beg, steal or borrow to provide their rebellious sons with one. The ‘gals’ have done away with the traditional sari or shalwar kameez for the body hugging jeans and T-shirt, save a few. The ‘guys’ are in trendy peddle-pusher jeans or long-shorts, and to hell with the verti or sarong. Luminous pink or green framed sunglasses atop their heads, gelled hair (rainbow coloured tints not yet), chains, bracelets and, of course, the mobile phone completes the picture of the Jaffna ‘cool dude’.

The Jaffna town itself is a haze of shops offering a range of ‘mod’ clothing for the young Jaffnites. A famous supermarket chain in the South whose owners have their roots in the North have opened up an outlet in the city centre that makes its counterparts in the rest of Lanka look like poor relatives. So well is it stocked! Well patronized by the Jaffna citizenry this supermarket stands as a beacon of what our brethren in the North have been deprived of materially and what the rest of us in the South have taken so much for granted for so long.

The Touring Jaffnite

As infrastructure development steams ahead full speed, geographical borders are becoming less challenging and so a people suppressed and repressed for so long are finally able to move around in order to sample a taste of what is on the other side.

For instance, one needs to secure a place on the waiting-list to grab a seat on a South-bound bus from Jaffna as these our brethren, denied for so long, make their way in hundreds mostly to Colombo. Many amongst these are the impressionable and so far naïve ‘cool dudes’ of Jaffna who could easily fall prey to the underworld vermin in Colombo and its suburbs. Therefore they could easily be enticed into the dark world of drugs, alcohol, pornography et al – the downside of globalisation!

One does not need to be endowed with a vivid imagination to wonder how significant a role sexual suppression might have figured amongst the repressed youth Prabhakaran fostered. At an age when the male testosterone levels go through the roof, these young men were forced to abide by a set of norms practiced only by the non-hypocritical clergy. Therefore finally free, they hungrily lap up all things taboo, too.

Under Prabhakaran’s rule if a boy was seen talking to a girl, they were forced to marry whether the parties concerned wanted to or not, or else they had to face the wrath of their Lord and Master Prabhakaran. So now the divorce rate amongst these forced-to-marry victims is also on the rise.

Also under Prabhakaran’s rule Tamil was the only language permitted; no English and definitely NO Sinhala. And so we the non-Tamil-speaking from the rest of Lanka travel to our long lost northern parts of our country, dreading the thought of making ourselves understood by our Tamil-only-speaking brethren. Lo and behold, for if you speak to them in a smattering of Tamil they reply in near perfect Sinhala or English leaving you squirming with shame!

Yes the military is there in Jaffna just like we in the South had them not too long ago, with check-points and the rest. But the military presence in Jaffna appears to be less obnoxious than we knew them. They let the civilians go about their daily business freely while they hang around sometimes armed and sometimes not, just as we still see them in the South.

Jaffna Goes Rock ‘n’ Roll

Amidst all the sociological changes Jaffna and its people are experiencing there came to Jaffna Town the ‘Jaffna Music Festival 2013’ that shook the foundations of the traditionally conservative Jaffnites to their very core. Jaffnites of all ages, the traditionally conservative and the ‘mod ’ thronged the Jaffna Town Municipal Grounds, some with their very young in tow, to watch and listen to these ‘Aliens’ who had landed on their soil with so much noise, bright lights and colour.

Day one saw a very sober disciplined audience who remained in their seats or on mats on the sandy ground quietly absorbing another side of globalisation they had been shielded from thus far. This was until the vibrant performances by Chirkutt and NirtyaNandan from Bangladesh, Indian actress Ila Arun of Rajasthani folk/pop fusion music fame and her dancers hit the stage full throttle. Their music was so powerful that one had to be totally deaf not to respond to it.

With this the thus far quiet audience appeared to have reached their limit of passive participation in the party. The rhythm of the music seemed to feed a long suppressed hunger deep within them, and so giving way to their natural instincts leapt to their feet and turned the grounds into a veritable discotheque for the young and old alike. The white haired older Jaffnites dressed in their traditional Sunday best some with holy ash on their foreheads and some with toothless grins adorning their faces started tapping their toes or swaying to the music as the mood caught on while the young danced their cares away in a near frenzy.

Some of the “unpopular” military in civvies were also part of the party munching on boiled chickpeas and making a picnic of the evening while highly amused and roaring with laughter at the side acts of gymnastics performed for their benefit by the high spirited ‘cool dudes’ of Jaffna. The obvious camaraderie between the civilians and the military in this instance was a sight to behold.

For me personally, though, the artistes put on a magnificent performance. The greatest joy I derived was to sit back and watch my long denied brethren finally being able to let their hair down and have the time of their lives. For this I say a sincere Thank You to the organizers of this event.

Prabhakaran’s Dream in Tatters

Had Velupillai Prabhakaran been around he would definitely not have needed any encouragement to gulp down his famous cyanide capsule! For gone is his dream of an ‘Eelam’ where he was subjugating a section of Lanka’s people to abide by his tyrannical word or face death. Today those very people he held hostage to his myopic dreams appear to be finally free.

The current young generation of Jaffnites now in their mid -teens to early- twenties would be a force to reckon with if the likes of another Prabhakaran decides to raise his head again given the lackadaisical attitude of the government in implementing the likes of the LLRC recommendations. For it is this young and impressionable generation of the North who had their elder brothers and sisters forcefully conscripted by the LTTE as child-soldiers and used as cannon fodder to fulfill the whim of a one man’s vision.

It is also this generation that was deprived of all the luxuries and comforts their counterparts have been enjoying throughout the rest of Lanka. And it is this generation that has amidst them the future leaders and decision makers on behalf of the community they represent. The ‘old and the wise’ today will be well advised to handle this generation with caution as they hold the key to future peace and stability of a united Lanka.

Let them not be burdened by our mistakes of today and yesterday. Let us make the changes here and now so that this generation of our Lankans will have a new beginning with less baggage to cloud their vision.

As witnessed by the sociological impact of the ‘Jaffna Music Festival 2013’it is now obvious that all people of Lanka can no longer preserve and protect one culture in isolation in an environment where culture is moving beyond borders and boundaries with one shared meaning of a ‘culture’ however alien it may be. It is this common ‘alien’ culture that will initially lead to interconnectedness amongst the youth of Lanka irrespective of their ethno-cultural background.

If we are to aspire for a united Lanka we all need to cast aside majority superior attitudes as well as minority superior attitudes and move forward with the times in both spirit and deed as well as find the courage to let go of the comforts of the familiar and embrace the ‘unfamiliar alien’ such as the cultural fusion portrayed through the ‘Jaffna Music Festival 2013’.

This will not only serve as an icebreaker for one to accept customs, languages, attitudes and values of the ‘other’ but also to eventually create a sustainable and lasting intercultural relationship amongst Lanka’s multi ethno-religious society.

At the end of the day though we all are of such different backgrounds and weighed down by diverse prejudices we all have one need in common – to be respected, accepted, loved and the freedom to live a secure and peaceful life. Is that too much to ask?

I wonder where Shamin Picked up the cutural norms imposed by LTTE. No wonder she has not visited Jaffan for Eight years. She does not know about teh cultural normas of Tamils or that fostered by LTTE. LTTE did not impose like the Taliban. Everybody had their seual freedom. What they ensured is that no sexual harasment took place. They ensiured that no drug culture. Today what is happening in Jaffan is Feamlse are not safe on the roads. Drugs are sold with stat support to cutural genocide. During the 2003 peace period, Ihave travelled with lot of sihal Friends, LTTE had peopel who could talk in English ALl teh Name boards were in all three languages.
She may not have seen the State terror and cultural genocide that is taking place. But any Tamil can feel. No one would tell Sharmini as tehy will not trust her.. I did not realize Sharmini will write something that she does not really know

      Dear Raja

Just like you, we all feel such a strong sense of Nostaliga for Sun God’s tyranny. We miss it so much. Specially Jaffana youth. Like S harmini Serasinghe documents here. they just cannot wait to enjoy life in a LTTE trench in Vanni Jungles.

Now that Sri Lanka has removed VP, the tyrant from our soil forever, why don’t you move to North Korea. Where you can still enjoy starvation, opression and brutality at any given time. Not very far rom VP offered Tamils of the North.

“Now that Sri Lanka has removed VP, the tyrant from our soil forever, why don’t you move to North Korea.”

Soon Sri Lanka will be the next North Korea, why bother spending scarce resources on air ticket unless you want to arrange Kallthonies at discounted fare, organised by the state and its institutions.

        Sri Lanka didn’t remove VP.

“Just like you, we all feel such a strong sense of Nostaliga for Sun God’s tyranny.”

VP was saved by the then president and his armed forces from his premature unnatural death during IPKF’s occupation of this island. The sun god’s atrocities could have been prevented had the Sri Lankan state allowed the IPKF to continue its operations.

You can’t have the cake and eat it.

As far as the people are concerned it was they who suffered under LTTE and it is they who suffer under present regime. For them irrespective of who rules, they have resigned to the fact that they are born to suffer.

The only difference is LTTE used iron fist whereas the present regime uses iron fist in velvet glow.

I like your sarcasm but not on their expense.

We have a serious problem. Rajapassa clan has a dynasty project.

Sri Lanka will throw them out of power in due course. Most people are already utterly fed up with them.

      Raja,
If the LTTE was so puritanical and anti-drugs, why was the LTTE merchant navy an integral part of the drug trafficking around the world? Odd, no?

I bet Prabha’s ashes are twisting in the wind seeing the changes in Jaffna.

dont talk bull,i knew jaffna before the war and during the war everyone knows the rules imposed by the LTTE
i)banning indian Tamil movies apart from war movies!
ii)imposing a pass system from 1990 – 1995 (when those rascals were chased out of Jaffna) which prevented people from leaving Jaffna to Colombo even for medical treatment (you had to queue in front of the office in Nallur and get interviewd by some un-educated idiot who will then decide if you can be give the visa to go to Colombo or not,if your allowed to go then they will want to know if you contributed to their defence fund if not no pass will be issued
if someone under the age of 35 were to travel 1stly they will try to refuse and then they will ask someone of that age group to stand in as surety to ensure they return if not the surety will be in big trouble
during the latter stages they wanted people to hand over their property deeds when they travelled out of jaffna!!
english music was frowned upon too but not strictly enforced
I know because i was born there so dont try to glorify them

no no.. the LTTE peddled Drugs to other nations to Infect their youth instead. Hence the many Ships taking Drugs and Bringing Arms.. Also the youth in the north were too afraid to walk on the roads as they were forcefully abducted to fight and die.. and well some were pressed into as servents for the LTTE leadership.. What u and many wont say many Tamils turned against the LTTE.. its easy for LTTE western diaspora to shout die for the socalled cause while they sit in canada and take part in every criminal activity.. its the poor B*** doing the dying. Today the name boards in the north mostly in two languages Eng and Tamil.. So well done for the LTTE to have it in 3 languages.. or you mean when it came to collect the Forcefully Taxes when people went there so the LTTE can buy more drugs and continue their Inte Prostitution and human smuggling work.

Ms.Sharmini Serasinghe is such a narrow minded person , Please get this, I am a diaspora Tamil married to a Tamil who went to St.Bridgets Convent and have spent last nearly 30 years outside Jaffna and living an Canada. Being a father of two Teenagers, The authors is taking the adolescence issue as National Tamils issue “Shell Shock To Culture Shock”, Doe she realize Jaffna was under Army control for last two decades?,
On top what she does not know what she is talking about, she is blatantly laying here those are:
    1) “Also under Prabhakaran’s rule Tamil was the only language permitted; no English and definitely NO Sinhala.- Actually VP encouraged encouraged Tamils to study in all Languages , he believd Tiger not only roared in Tamil but also in other languages, and my mother was a Sinhalese Teacher to LTTE, this is a blatant lie)
    2) “Under Prabhakaran’s rule if a boy was seen talking to a girl, they were forced to marry whether the parties concerned wanted to or not, or else they had to face the wrath of their Lord and Master Prabhakaran. So now the divorce rate amongst these forced-to-marry victims is also on the rise” : Jaffna boys and Girls were liberated from their “cast base marriage” “Dowry system” the 19th Century oppressive thought, He allowed Females to join the movement and were very well trained thus facilitate equal base for males and females. Make no mistake no Tamil Man can be convinced to Mary a lady against hos wish sometimes their own Mom’s could not do it.

Being living in a western country for the last 30 years, unfortunately you have not learned even to write atleast one English sentance properly.

You standard of English is so poor, it takes a lot of effort to understand what you have written. It is still not clear if you are for the LTTE or against them.

Waran Vaithilingam, your only qualifications seem to be that your wife “went to St.Bridgets Convent” and you are a “diaspora Tamil”.

So you are a father of two children who went to Canada almost 30 years ago.Since you are such a die hard LTTE fan why didn’t you donate your children to Prabhakaran’s child brigade?

So you living in Canada knows much more than Ms.Sharmini Serasinghe who was and is still living in Sri Lanka?

As a member of Civil Society I along with others had regular contact with the former government Peace Secretariat SCOPP where the writer Sharmini was Director Communications.

SCOPP was in regular contact with the LTTE Peace Secretariat regarding peace talks and other peace related initiatives, so the writer knows what she’s talking or in this instance writing about much better than you sitting cozily far away in a foreign country when Sri Lanka was virtually going up in flames.

      1) Your claim “VP encouraged Tamils to study in all Languages , he believed Tiger not only roared in Tamil but also in other languages, and my mother was a Sinhalese Teacher to LTTE”.

Yes VP insisted that his LTTE brigade learnt all three languages so as not to appear suspicious when on a ‘killing mission’ in the South.Your mother taught the LTTE the Sinhala language so that they could kill better. Did she also teach Sinhala to the non LTTE Tamils in the North? I bet not or she would have been killed by your friend VP.

2)Your commenting here NOT as a Tamil civilian but as an LTTEer.

Get your facts right and perhaps get your mother to teach you proper English before you even attempt to comment on social media threads.

So you are nearly 30 years of out of Your Motherland [ Mine too]and you supported to kill your own brethrens, because you claimed your self a supporter of the Killers, the LTTE.
But in sri lanka We Sinhalese are fighting to save innocent tamil from oppression of your Ltte and Thug governance.
and your are boasting about your Demonic killer, Pirapaharan.
and there are few killers with present governance still practicing what they learned from your so called sun god.

we know that Ltte ers killed many innocent Sinhalese Tamils and Muslims too. specially kids, babies.
but when we see that photo of young boy Balachandiraen’s
      body we all cried.
when the last face of war, we visited many IDP camps,Dodging army check points to help IDPs.
they are/were not our relatives or friends but
because of we consider we are all humans and have sympathies for all.
To Tell You That I have Lost My close relatives to your so called Dream war Of EELAAM.
And I was lucky enough to save my life for many instances from LTTE Traps and bombs.
But I don’t Have Any Grudges or revenges with Tamils.
My only Obligation is to help other humane beings.
AS FELLOW HUMANE BEING, YOU HAVE TO THINK TO HELP ANOTHER.
NOT HELP TO HARM OR KILL.

Jaffna has been under the control of the army for the last 17/18 yrs or so, killing off Tamil youth without any investigations. The army has been supplying the youth free drugs, alcohol, blue CD, ……
Most days we get the news:
newspaper seller is attacked, journalist is attacked, meetings by TNA MPs attacked by army, university staff meeting in the library get disturbed by army, persons criticising the government get oil or dead dogs thrown into their houses, peaceful protesters are attacked, University students are attacked, someone gets ”disappeared”, army commander saying schools functions cannot be had without the presence of the army, guests have to be acceptable to army, IDPs fruitlessly asking the army to move out of their house/land, visiting expatriates get attacked or ”disappeared”, ………

    No elections for Northern Province.
Presidential Task Force for Northern Development made of central govt officials and personnel from all the armed forces and not a single Tamil in it just one Muslim and 18 Sinhalese.
President comes and has ”development” meetings without TNA MPs representing the people.

All of a sudden there is this tamasha.

    Who would organise it?

    Ms Serasinghe,

I am very pleased to read that peace and safety are being enjoyed by the people of Jaffna. The young people may be carefree and partying but the general feeling among the populace, I am lead to believe, is fear and intimidation from the military, and the paramilitaries run by Douglas Devananda. The military is intruding into the affairs of the people daily and attacks on the journalists are still occurring. On the face of it, for a visitor from the South, everything is hunky dory but for the people, I assure you, it is not. I have relatives in Jaffna with whom I am in regular contact and their perception of life is very different from what you have painted here.

People may be happy that they are free from the iron rule of VP but they are certainly not happy to be under the iron rule of Rajapaksa. the Jaffna people have fallen from the frying pan into the fire. That’s the reality there.

Sharmini Serasinghte has written a very shallow description of the Jaffna reality trying to pass it off as some kind of sociological treatise. A comparison/contrast with what comes out of the UTHRJ will prove most salutary in this context and expose this kind of fraudulent puffery parading as analysis.
No wonder these bureaucrats made such a monumental hash of the so-called “peace process!”

I think you are lying, you are from North Of S L.
        Any way.
        Jaffna is now in normalcy,
but inside the hearts of the people are hate and revenge is bubbling.
because in every family, they have lost their loved ones, like most of Sinhalese Families to that war .
and the freedom is/was limited by the present governance and earlier by the LTTE, GOSL AND Other militant groups.
Most of the Farmers in Jaffna and Vanni cannot do their job as many restrictions imposed on them.
still some of them are not in their own places but alien lands.
that is not a fairy land as we think,
Governance is doing some thing but, They loot the resources belongs to peasants.
most of them are helpless to voice their request or objections.
and further, Children and widows are in vulnerable situations.
to experience this you must vist there and stay with
        a known tamil family.
then you will understand the real situation.

      Sri Lankan,

Thanks. I have given my general comment below. To be more specific, Sharmini is right. The Jaffna city and the peninsula are back to normalcy. People are living normal and mundane lives without fear. they visit shows and fairs in large numbers. Temple festivals are well attended and grandly celebrated. I was surprised recently to see young females riding scooties after dark on the A9 towards Chavakachcheri. This not withstanding there are many small army camps and posts on this route. The presence of the soldiers is also not a problem, though very well placed to nip any problems in the bud. The people and the soldiers have established a rapport and this is palpable.

Jaffna Peninsula has cash to spare due to external remittances. The foreign remittance funded youth in Jaffna, display their affluence more blatently than their counterparts in Colombo. This is creating a desire for a similar life style among the less afluent and poor youth, far beyond the capacity of the Jaffna economy to provide. This is a cause for much frustration

However, there is also much poverty and a breakdown of social norms that should define any stable society. This is the result of the war and the breakdown in social and family structures. This will take time to recover. Further, a concerted effort must be made to address problems of the widows, orphans and the unemployable. Alcoholism is also a major problem.

However, Jaffna is improving visibly by leaps and bounds and definitely has no stomach for a repeat of any militancy. Political aspirations are yet subbordinate to economic and social recovery.

        Sri Lankan,

Please find in the link below some beautiful photographs from the Jaffna Music festival:

        dbsjeyaraj.com/dbsj/archives/18016

I am sure many will notice the armed soldiers on guard and make comments. This can be seen also in events attended by dignitaries, held in Colombo.

Well Shirani you visited Jaffna not to see the present but a distorted past. LTTE ran Engish classes printed Sinhalease news paper. Discouraged dowry and cast system. Those who danced at the music festival were forced to attend forced to laugh and forced to dance. If they boycotted and refused to attend you know what would have happened to them. This is what you failed to see. You are either partially blind or incapable of seeing a true picture which is required from a journalist. After all you are a Sri Lankan we cant remove the Sri Lankanism overnight.

Really Lanka Liar, you should change your pseudonym to ‘Lanka Deaf & Blind.

Were you one of those in charge of the LTTE printing press?

Also were you the one in Jaffna who forced people to dance and laugh at the music festival? Did you threaten these people with death if they didn’t laugh and dance?

Without warming your bum in whichever corner of the world you are holed up in, go to Jaffna and check out reality for yourself.

I am not the one. Dont fight with another mans name. It will take you no where. If you continue, our leader Merwin will tie you to the tree. In Jaffna when a public function is organized by you know who, public servants teachers even students are forced to attend. If they don’t they will vanish. People are transported in vehicles. Didn’t you see that happening in the south during election times. You think you live in paradise because you are either deaf and blind or fed to the nose with you know what. Try taking some Mahinda Vitamins. It may help you.
By the way you are a true Sri lankan because you speak the Sri Lankan Language with proper Sri Lankan grammar and style and thinking. Please keep it up.

Lanka liar, is this the name your parents gave you at birth? Poor fellow, no wonder you suffer from such a massive inferiority complex.

The next time I organize a public function in Jaffna I will definitely hire your services as the Clown of the show. Don’t worry I will pay you well from the Rajapaksa coffers.

Obviously you being so self righteous will never attend any such show even by force, so how come you were not made to vanish? What a pity. They could have spared a valuable young life who could have been of great service to his people and taken an old good for nothing idiot like you instead.

Since you are obviously on Mahinda vitamins tell me how it works? Does it dissolve the brain like it has done to you?

How do you know about my Sri Lankan style and grammar because I have so far commented only in English. You miserable old fool go and sleep it off before you end up with a heart attack and die. :-)

          LANKA LIAR, L.L.D

          YOU ARE PSYCHOTIC
YOU ARE SHOWING CLEAR SIGNS OF DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER.

          From webmd.com

“Dissociative identity disorder is characterized by the presence of two or more distinct or split identities or personality states that continually have power over the person’s behavior. With dissociative identity disorder, there’s also an inability to recall key personal information that is too far-reaching to be explained as mere forgetfulness. With dissociative identity disorder, there are also highly distinct memory variations, which fluctuate with the person’s split personality.

The “alters” or different identities have their own age, sex, or race. Each has his or her own postures, gestures, and distinct way of talking. Sometimes the alters are imaginary people; sometimes they are animals. As each personality reveals itself and controls the individuals’ behavior and thoughts, it’s called “switching.” Switching can take seconds to minutes to days. When under hypnosis, the person’s different “alters” or identities may be very responsive to the therapist’s requests.”

All comments above have been written with a heavily biased mind depending on the person’s race. However, Ms.Serasinghe has given a good cross section of the liberated minds of the present day Jaffna youth. Nobody can deny that for the last three decades(pre-end of war,2009)the most severly suffered section of the SL population was The Northen Tamils; they were mercilessly battered, bruised and ruined to desperation by Prabakaran, all because of the delusions & fantasy of the LTTE ideology. As brotheren Sri-Lankans we all feel sorry for the sad plight they all had to undergo under such rigid and brutal regime of a self-appointed dictator. No wonder the US classified the LTTE as the most vicious and ruthless Terrorist organisation of the world. We feel sorry that the ordinary Peace-loving citizens of the North had lose their treasured values in all spheres – cultural, social , economical and most importantly, serious destruction of education of the youth. It is so sad that the very existence of that peaceful, dignified and independent society was crushed and disintegrated by those demonic policies of LTTE. We only hope that the intelligent Tamil people of Sri-Lanka will think clearly for themselves, and not get deviated by irrational, fanatic and impracticable ideas and pressure put forward by desperate politicians like Sambandan, TamilNadu and even ManoGaneshan and Diaspora. We wish a Peaceful & Prosperous Sri-Lanka where all citizens of all races are treated EQUALLY and with dignity – as promised by the present government.

It is good to see that people of jaffna enjoying themselves, under the watchful eyes of the military of course. This contrasts with the lack of freedom for relatives of those missing or in custody to come to colombo and hand over a protest. The taboo on commemorating the loss of those dear and near. The inability to return to their homes and lands etc.

Lets hope that all inhabitants of the North will be allowed the freedom to enjoy life and the rights they once held before the advent of racism and intolerance.

I was involved in constructing the Jaffna Railway station and maintaining the Railway tracks as District Engineer Northern District in the 60s but today I am in Jaffna looking at the ruins caused by LTTE and the subsequent war. Even the earth from the Railway formation has been removed and the luxurious Jaffna station stands like a monument in ruins in Jaffna. It is true that some are rejoicing the return of freedom but most are still living in abject poverty as refugees without proper accommodations nor sanitary services in abandoned schools, all cramped up with about four families to one classroom. These are the most affected sons and daughters of Jaffna still suffering. When I met them, to my surprise they mentioned to me that this is how they have been living for the last two decades from the time LTTE chased these families in 1990. They see no solutions to their suffering for the foreseeable future. What a shame! Where is humanitarian Aid? Both the Government and INGOs are supposed to be helping but nothing has changed the life of these people born to suffer. These are the forgotten citizens of Sri lanka

    Sharmini

I’m sure you can see from the comments made here the parallels between the wannabe LTTE ideologues and the Bodu Bala Sena. They are two sides of the same coin with the same hypocrisy and all. Just like the BBS, LTTE under Prabakaran was also essentially saying, “do as I say, not as I do.” They both prescribe strict codes of conduct in public, but in privacy they flout them. It is well documented there was sexual abuse of young cadres in LTTE and other Tamil militant groups. Condoms, pornographic films and drugs were found in LTTE bunkers occupied by child soldiers. It is also known Tamil militants were given drugs before they were sent out to kill civilians including children in border areas. Recently an ex-Tiger told me they used to experiment with itinerant Sinhalese fishermen captured in the Wanni areas by subjecting them to various methods of killing. He told me the LTTE child soldiers were drugged to carry out such gory tasks. It is also documented that some of the Tamil militant groups engaged their cadre in prostitution, drug trafficking, credit card scams, human smuggling and many other crimes to raise funds. So where is “Tamil culture” in all this that is being allegedly destroyed by GOSL now?

About the larger problem of sexual deviance in general in Jaffna society due to the severe sexual repression in that society, please see my comments to Prof. Ratnajeevan Hoole’s article on “Bestiality and Buggery.”

The LTTE ideologues are working overtime in subtle ways to stop exactly what you have described as opening up Tamil society. They invoke patriarchal and fundamentalist ideas – just like the Bodu Bala Sena – in the name of protecting “Tamil culture” and “Tamil identity.” Unfortunately people like Prof. Ratnajeevan Hoole, Dr. Devanesan Nesiah, and former Supreme Court Judge C.V. Wigneswaran have also – unwittingly, I like to believe – lent their support to this conservative reaction to social change in their statements. They have made bigoted comments to the effect that the arrival of large number of Sinhala tourists will pollute and corrupt the morals of Jaffna society. They make ridiculous claims like the government is promoting sexual promiscuity and prostitution in the north. This only shows their insecurity and panic in the face of the winds of change sweeping Tamil society dislocating entrenched hierarchy. These are problems faced in today’s globalized world by all societies due to the disintegration of traditional social structures brought out by rapid urbanization, the rise of consumerism, information technology, and the proliferation of social media and the emergence of a homogenous global youth culture (as you aptly point out, a fusion in music, fashion and lifestyles). And it is not a conspiracy of Rajapakse regime as the LTTE ideologues would like delude themselves. For that matter they must recall the model of economic and social development that was bandied about by LTTE think tanks when it was believed Eelam was around the corner. The model was Singapore, not Chola Land!

I am sure the younger generation that is enjoying the opening up of their rigid Jaffna society and the new found cultural freedom will take both the pros and cons of the changes in their stride and emerge as successful future leaders of their society as you say. Meanwhile we must not forget that Bodu Bala Sena=LTTE ideology = Taliban. The same ****, but different piles.

Well said Ajay.I would like to add two more incidents.

Those who disagree with Sharmini Serasinghe’s observations and conclusions, should visit the Jaffna peninsula and make their own observations and conclusions. Further, I wish Sharmini visits the Vanni and the east soo and reports her observations.

Reading some of the comments here, I am reminded of what I read in the Christian Science Monitor while a post-graduate in Canada in the early 1970s. The only news about Sri Lanka reported in that newspaper of high repute was that a buffaloe had bitten a man ! That incident was considered newsworthy! The exceptions, the exciting, the startling, the absurd and the depressing are what the media offers today. Unfortunately, this type of information is what is educating many!

“Under Prabhakaran’s rule if a boy was seen talking to a girl, they were forced to marry whether the parties concerned wanted to or not, or else they had to face the wrath of their Lord and Master Prabhakaran. So now the divorce rate amongst these forced-to-marry victims is also on the rise.”

LTTE did not impose such a control over a boy and girl talking to each other. Divorce rate is on a rise for a number of other reasons, and I am happy to go through when time permits.

This is Shiranees Jaffna dream. It is a pity she forgot to mention that rains drops are now falling down. Under VP rules they even prevented that it seems. Only a cleaver journalist can see the truth others will look for a cow having an ice cream. Once she visited Jaffna she was able to see the past not the not the present. Some of her assertions are never been mentioned before by any journalist let alone the Sri Lankan propaganda machinery. If she can go one step further then I should say there is something on the offing. It is only when the Tamils get to freely elect their PC in the North
can one say things are in the road to recovery – in so far as recovery of the lost democratic rights of the Tamil people are concerned. For the record, allow me to add the Tigers too did their share of denying this right to the Tamils when the LTTE ruled the roost. The conclusion of the successful elections must be followed by the appointment of a distinguished and experienced Tamil as Governor with the Police being upgraded into their role of guardians of the law.

This article shows how superficial it in regards to Tamils culture and depth of this ethnic issue.
It is not that simple, there is a history of 29 years of bloody war, more than half century suppression of Tamils rights in order ascertain political power and majorities well being and more than a century lasted ethnic oppression based on religion and language.
I thing basic issue here is majority of Sinhalese never trying to understand the root of this ethnic issue. It’s just not their fault rather an end result of systematic suppression of facts, manipulation of issues and sensationalize it with unrealistic future predictions of problems they may face for the short sighted benefits.
Obviously war made all the communities to suffer however with greater extent to Tamils. Why are we reluctant to question, what led to this war, why a community decided travel on such a dangerous path. It’s just not Prabaharan who started the war there were many other parallel groups. Isn’t that signifies, that community had come to the edge of their problem rather than one person’s hierarchy thinking.
Are we willing to genuinely answer the questions, why in the pre-war era Tamils reasonable questions were answered with four cruel ethnic riots, who showed these violent paths?
Is there any one to look in to post war Tamils suffering, those who lived in the war areas and those who were part of this war for various reasons with open heart or are we accepting it as a mass punishment.
These festivals and the teens there never going to be the window of sorrow deep in all the Tamils heart. Picturing it that superficially just because of availability of an opportunity is not going to help Sinhalese to understand this country’s most burdening issue.
I agree cultural and community interactions are far more important however they are just not enough,
a genuine harmony in this country is possible only when majority Sinhalese understand and accept that Tamils rights were violated and are being violated as it happened in South Africa!

What a wet blanket and pessimist you are.

“These festivals and the teens there never going to be the window of sorrow deep in all the Tamils heart” you say. Do you want all the future generations of Tamils to keep moaning and groaning over what has been done and finished?

Undoubtedly terrible mistakes have been made by politicians both Sinhalese and Tamil so you should be directing your concerns to politicians and not to the general public.

You also keep contradicting yourself over and over again which makes it difficult to understand what you are trying to say.

I tend to agree with Appachchi with regard to the casualness with which Sharmini has described Jaffna society. A proper analysis of life in Jaffna might need more indepth examination of economic streams, welfare, agriculture and facilitation for such, irrigation, land ownership, social engineering and demographic balance, aculturation and equal opportunity etc. The caste system and distinction between those identified as low or high seems to have disintegrated also.

In order to write “A proper analysis of life in Jaffna……” as you say Sharmini would have to spend not three days but at least three months in Jaffna.

Sharmini. Please dont try to write a treatise on Jaffna after spending just a few days there a fortnight ago. Your knowledge is very superficial; you have spoken to or seen a few people-and from your description much of your time was spent at the recent music festival. I’m sure it was great, judging by your standards. But Jaffna has a depth of feeling and history that you will never understand. So just leave well alone.

      Essie,

It is the frog-in-the-well fuddy duddies like you with your “Jaffna has a depth of feeling and history” complex that some of us Sinhalese find so suffocating. We in the South also have “a depth of feeling and history” but we don’t wear it on our sleeve like you and the likes of you do.

I too visited Jaffna recently and was surprised and moved to see the Jaffna people not look sullen and depressed any more. They are learning to live normally again. Citizens everywhere in this island are traveling to the regions that were not visited for decades on account of the LTTE and their roadside bombs and suicide terror activities. They are getting to know each other and are realizing that we are all inhabitants of a beautiful island and should be working together to rebuild it into as near the paradise on earth that it has the potential to be !.
Thank you Sharmini for communicating to the world that Jaffna has come alive again. There are many who do not want Jaffna people to be happy, and only want to have them keep on reliving the fearful past with vengeance against the government and the army who brought the war to an end. Thank goodness the young people of Jaffna will not let that happen!

I don’t know what is she talking about.I born in 1985 in Jaffna,IN 1996 my place taken to control by government. It is last 17 years! I don’t know what is the idea came from. I don’t know what is she talking about 2004 to now. since 1996 it is in government control. There was a time government let LTTE to come and go their activity. And I studied in Kelaniya uni and had a chance of get to know singala friends. and left the country in 2010. One thing i want to say all the Srilankan who live their. Learn the rights stand for the rights. Snt the goo politaton to the government. We don’t really never knew what is freedom. we never had it. And our country is beautiful.Lets build it together. And one more thing the reason for the jaffna change is their financial stability not because government did any thing.

The north & east are totally under the control of the army which controls all daily aspects of lives and livelihoods of citizens.
There are spies employed by military intelligence to report on dissent against such state control among citizens.
Minister Devananda’s paramilitaries have not yet been disarmed, and prey on citizens for their existence.
The army exercises ‘judicial powers’ by arresting students and holding them in secret prison camps under the guise of ‘rehabilitation’ instead of producing them in courts – this does not happen in the south.
Police do not record any complaints, and arrest those who complain.
“development decisions” are taken without the presence of elected representatives of the citizens.
Journalists and distributers of jaffna newspapers are attacked by thugs
in civvies whose affiliation is known.
Public servants work under threat of dismissal,if they protest actions/decisions of the military governer and his lackeys – one of them even says that some’disappeared’ persons are employed by the Ministry of Defence – in this forum!
Recently hundreds were prevented from travelling to colombo to protest ‘disappearences’ and disregard of same by the government.
Army occupies large swathes of land and prevents reoccupation of homes by hundreds still, after the war.
Sharmini should learn spoken tamil and converse in confidence with citizens to know the truth.

Sharmini Serasinghe, you are really great. You have given a true picture of present Jaffna. Your assertion that ‘at the end of the day though we all are of such different backgrounds and weighed down by diverse prejudices we all have one need in common – to be respected, accepted, loved and the freedom to live a secure and peaceful life’ is highly appreciated.

  • 0

Ms Serasinghe apparently means well and yearns for unity and reconciliation – like most of us. But she can report on only what meets the eye and not the more compelling issues below the surface. That picture where that distraught old lady falls in tears at the feet of Ranil in Jaffna is an eloquent expression of what most folks in Jaffna feel today.

Parts of Jaffna town the Writer visited is far from the length and breadth of the land of the Tamil Nation – still under different forms of physical and emotional occupation. People therein treated akin to a subject nation even by the lowly soldier/constable. I hope this is the exception rather than the norm. The allocation of its physical resources is done without local consultation and presented as largesse most illegally to friends and relatives from the South.

I will subject myself to charges of ingratitude and lacking in objectivity, if I do not give credit to the Rajapakses for dismantling the Cadjan Curtain and freeing its captive people. A close friend in Colombo – the entire extended family millionaires in the Peninsula rom Dutch Times; agriculture-land owners and also well settled in business in Colombo – could not go to Jaffna till post-2009 because of a feared VP Fatwa. The large extended family remains grateful to the Rajapakses for freeing them. The people are freer now than during the “war” in one way – but continue to be in chains in others.

I have said more in these pages what would ideally be some part of the formulae towards unity and reconciliation.

in order for tamil people to be free, sinhala black monkey army should quit north east. black monkeys remain there as unwelcomed guests. unelected sinhala black pariah chandrasiri should go back where he came from. sinhala black fat slob hathurasinghe shold go back along with black monkey army to matara and swing on trees. sinhala black monkey army should hand over the land of the tamil people without delay. if the black sinhala monkey army still insist that they want to stay in the north east, then there are abundance of trees which can be used as their habitat. i understand red china is building houses for sinhala black monkey army. can i ask why when there are thousands of trees.

What’s with all these people commenting so negatively on this thread? Don’t they want to see their people in Jaffna having a good time?
As the writer specifically points out, she’s only writing on what she saw and heard in three days. And a positive one at that, not the usual depressing stuff we have to read about how much the Tamils suffered and still suffering bla bla bla.

It is obvious from some of the comments here that we still have unarmed LTTEers amongst us.

Peace Dove, can’t you see the LTTE diaspora flavour in all the negative comments here? These parasites don’t want to see or accept that the Tamils in the North could actually be happy. Because the LTTE diaspora’s survival depends on the perceived ceaseless suffering of Tamils in Lanka.

The moment our Tamils in Lanka appear to be free and enjoying a simple show of entertainment the LTTE diaspora parasites go into panic mode because their very survival is threatened. They are nothing but bloodsuckers.
