Kadir’s Land Grabber Unveils His Statue

The President Mahinda Rajapaksa  unveiled a statue of the former Foreign Minister the late Lakshman Kadirgamar at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies in Colombo yesterday (August 12).

The unveiling ceremony had been organized to co-inside with Kadirgamar’s eighth death anniversary. Last week the son of assassinated Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar has filed legal action against Rajapaksa regime moves to acquire his ancestral property in Maviddapuram in the Jaffna peninsula.

The former Minister who inherited the land from his mother, was a strong critic of the LTTE and considered Sri Lanka’s best foreign minister of all time. Minister Kadirgamar’s brothers have also extended yeoman service to Sri Lanka, as military officers of rank and eminent lawyers.

His son’s petition against the Rajapaksa regime’s acquisition of his personal property puts the eminently respected Minister’s family front and centre of an ongoing struggle for land rights in the formerly embattled Jaffna peninsula.

I am glad we finally have a statue. To honour the memory of a much loved Sri Lankan, Lakshman Kadirgamar.

However, Rajapassa clan head is hardly the suitable man to unveil this statue. Reasons are obvious.

Rajapassa stands for none of the values Kadirgamar sought to promote in our country. And gave his life for. Democracy, tolerance, rule-of-law, freedom of expression..list is long.

Instead Rajapassa is busy building a dynasty. Destroying all institutions. One by one. Supported by a corrupt, violent web of cronies and henchmen. Fast truning Sri Lanka into an Asian Zimbabwe.

    Ayyo !!

Has anyone inquired about how the Kadirgamar Center came to acquire its present location? It belonged to the Blackler sisters and was fraudulently acquired..in case anyone cares.

Get your facts right – it belonged to the same family that donated a large amount of land to St. Bridget’s Convent (who’s name escapes me) and then was acquired by the Government in the ’70’s when House Sealing took place. Nothing fraudulent.

What more fraudulent than such draconian laws to acquire property belonging to Private individuals? At least have some sympathy for the fact that the family had donated land to St. Bridget’s Convent as said? These were the people who came to do charity to the Poor with other’s wealth, without generating wealth. In the end all those Poor Socialist Politicians have now become the wealthiest in the country.
