Former Parliamentarian and Vice President of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman today said, he will resign from the SLFP and join the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) led by Ananda Sangaree.
Karuna Amman said he and a group of local Tamil politicians supporting him have decided to contest all future elections under the TULF banner.
The former LTTE deputy leader said he would convene a media briefing in two weeks to announce the reasons for his decision.
Karuna expressed dismay about the SLFP hierarchy distancing him politically and not backing him when he faced several purpoted accusations.
In contrast Karuna said that he had helped both the SLFP and the country when both needed his services most. Karuna said he had played a pivotal role in defeating Prabhakaran and the LTTE and lamented that it was sad to see the country’s leaders forgetting his services in such a short time.
Karuna also welcomed several recent investigations centering on him including the disappearance and the alleged murder of Prageeth Ekneligoda while adding that these probes will reveal the truth as to who is truly responsible for such mayhem.
Karuna also refuted allegations directed at him by the recent report released by the office of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and said that he is ready to face any inquiry.
He said that even though the UN report has mentioned about a ‘Karuna Group’, he was not aware of any such group formed under him. Karuna said he had never taken up arms after quitting the LTTE.
Karuna said that he had met Sangaree for several rounds of talks and added that he was highly impressed by the TULF leaders vision to fulfill aspirations of the Tamil people.
Karuna said his resignation will be sent to the SLFP General Secretary today.
