The intersection of religious tradition, cultural mythology, and contemporary national development has once again come under intense public scrutiny in Sri Lanka. As discourse surrounding the role of Buddhism in modern society deepens, attention has increasingly focused on Venerable Kekirawe Sudassana Thero, a monk who has consistently sparked vital national conversations by questioning long-held ritualistic interpretations and mythological accretions embedded within popular religious practices.
Over the past few years, Sudassana Thero’s public interventions—ranging from digital media discussions to scholarly critiques—have polarized observers. Supporters argue that his efforts are aimed at stripping away unverified myths to reveal the pragmatic, core philosophical teachings of the Buddha. Proponents emphasize that for Sri Lanka to navigate its current socio-economic challenges, a shift toward rational inquiry and critical thinking is essential. By encouraging society to move past superstition, reform-minded analysts contend that the true spirit of Buddhist philosophy can be effectively harnessed to foster greater discipline, productivity, and overall national development.

Conversely, these unorthodox perspectives have faced substantial resistance from traditionalist quarters. Critics, including certain segments of the clergy and laity, express concern that questioning established cultural customs risks eroding communal heritage and the sentimental value attached to age-old religious observances. This tension has recently culminated in disciplinary proceedings, with reports indicating that Sudassana Thero faces potential expulsion by monastic authorities.
Concerns have been raised regarding the fairness of these disciplinary actions, particularly allegations that the Thero has faced adversarial panels alone without adequate opportunity to fully articulate or contextualize his positions beyond rigid, binary inquiries. Observers note that notes compiled from memory by the Thero reflect a defense of rational Dhamma against institutional pressure.
Ultimately, this unfolding situation highlights a broader, historical dilemma for Theravada Buddhism in Sri Lanka: balancing the preservation of institutional harmony with the necessity of intellectual evolution. Whether one views reform as a threat to tradition or a prerequisite for modern relevance, the dialogue surrounding Kekirawe Sudassana Thero underscores a critical question for the nation’s future—how a society can successfully align ancient spiritual heritage with the rational demands of economic and social progress.

How rational is it to make conclusions like “…This tension has recently culminated in disciplinary proceedings, with reports indicating that Sudassana Thero faces potential expulsion by monastic authorities….” when there are no reports that disciplinary actions have already taken against him?
Didnt Gautama Buddha preach his disciples to avoid rigid scepticism?
This priest is well known to castigate blind faith and superstition built around Buddhism and one who is genuinely interested in teaching people the true meaning of Buddha’s sermons. So he should be fine because thousands of rotten yellow robies are doing well despite their hideous behaviour quite open to public these days :) “ධම්මෝ හවේ රක්ඛති ධම්මචාරී” – “The Dhamma protects the one who lives by the Dhamma…”

Since this article appeared in the CT and Buddhism has become part of the constitution and this religion was used by the governments for for various crimes, corruption, oppression of non Buddhist people, governments should not waste their money, time and resources on this matter. Buddhism is for Buddhists, not for others. Similarly, Islam is for Islamists, not for others. Similarly Christianity for Christian people. Similarly Hinduism for Hindu people. Hinduism and Buddhism originated in India. Islam and Christianity originated from Middle East. Governments should not have the guardians of the religion. The Governments are for all the people in the country. They are responsible for the rule of law and justice. All the religions should come under the law and justice. It is the followers of the religion to make it their religion is lawful and justice.

Mr. Vipula: I think. Kekirawe Dhammananda has been subjected to restrictions by his own ‘Nikaya ‘ and has been prevented from speaking about ‘Pirivena Education’.
Note: I say this subject to correction.
This priest is one (among the very rare) who is devoting his time and energy (in the midst of severe criticism) to awaken the already misled (blinded by ‘Beneficiaries of the priest clan ‘) large number of people who follow ‘Buddha Dhamma’ as a ‘Religion’ rather than as a ‘Way of Life’. His discourse can be followed on the ‘YouTube’ channel through ‘ Power Hour Podcast’ and by typing his name, ‘Kekirawe Dhammananda’.
As I understand it (so far) ‘Buddha Dhamma’ is: The ‘Wisdom’ (Buddhi/Gnan) to know the way of ‘Existence’ . So, ‘Dhamma’ means the nature of ‘Existence ‘- existence together, universal interconnectedness (human and nature). It is a multidimensional process, practised with ‘Wisdom’, that can make us blissful, free from misery.

Modern society has progressed very fast challenging core religious concepts. Rather than telling that they are myths it is better to say old concepts were surpassed by new knowledge. All religions without marginalizing Buddhism need to be reformed to be acceptable to modern world otherwise they need to sustained it by force or forcing them or categorizing them as blasphemy like happening in extremism in Muslim world. Kairawe Sudassan there is making Buddhist religion acceptable to modern society and commendable for his work.
However Buddhist culture and customs has formed a Sri Lnkan society and given it specific identity as in christian society in England. Most of other religious groups in Sri Lanka should amalgamate these values without trying to break them for their own sustainability.
Reforms in cultural values need to be done gradually but destroying them apart can be dangerous to the society and country at large.

“Buddhist culture and customs has formed a Sri Lnkan society and given it specific identity”
I am at a loss to find Buddhism in what is going on in this society.

“The Charges & Guilty Plea: In April 2022, Wickramasuriya pleaded guilty in a U.S. federal court to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He admitted to a scheme that inflated the price of a new Sri Lankan embassy building in Washington, D.C. by $332,027 in an attempt to divert those funds to himself.”
–
“The U.S. Sentence: While the charge carried a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a U.S. District Court sentenced him in July 2022 to two years of probation and a $5,000 fine. He avoided federal prison time largely because the diverted funds were ultimately redirected back to Sri Lankan government accounts before the closing of the deal, resulting in no final financial loss to the state.”
