Kumar Sangakkara Must Resign From His Brand Ambassador Post: Anti-Narcotic Activists

Kumar Sangakkara must resign from his Brand Ambassador post. He is the brand ambassador of Anti-narcotics programme in Sri Lanka. He has no moral right to keep that post anymore after been criticised by the President for distributing alcohol.” couple of anti-narcotic activists told Colombo Telegraph.

Kumar

Criticising Enrique’s ‘Sex And Love’ show, organised by Sangakkara et al. President Maithripala Sirisena said; “The musical show lasted only for an hour. Prices of its tickets ranged from Rs. 5000 to 50,000. They were served Beer, Arrack, Brandy and Gin. This is the power of liquor. This is how they are trying to protect our culture, Some people may criticise me talking about these issues. But I am a Sinhala-Buddhist. It’s my duty to talk about these matters,” he said.

The President also said the organisers of such indecent events should be punished for bringing artistes, who destroy Sri Lanka’s proud culture. He said the organisers should be “whipped with toxic stingray tails”- a brutal medieval punishment.

Ace Sri Lankan Cricketer Kumar Sangakkara was appointed as the Brand Ambassador of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board by President Maithripala Sirisena at President’s official residence on August 19.

After been appointed, Kumar Sangakkara stated that he is thankful for the invitation to carry out this initiative at a time where lives of youth have been destroyed and families have been separated.

He went on to note that they themselves should stop the use of drugs to bring up a generation of youth who are physically and mentally healthy.

Efforts to contact Sangakkara were unsuccessful.

If we were to judge the morals and values of our cricketers, then we are on a very slippery slope. The President should be better advised before he goes around giving away ambassadorships and other titles to all who make the approach. It is not like the Presidential Secretariat is scratching itself each morning trying to figure out new titles to bestow for next week! Henchmen of these so-called luminaries make the contact and of course over promise of what is possible and bull-shit the gamayas in the ‘White House’ to get a photo moment.

I have no sympathy for anyone who stood in line for hours, or only saw a 1 hour show for 35,000. Most likely, you were not spending your own money. But, that is neither here nor there.

The Colombo Municipal Council is claiming it was cheated out of its 10% tax. Get to the cheats the proper way; the legal way. I doubt that will happen because in all likelyhood the Mayor’s son must have been there along with the Presidential son-in-law, on complimentary tickets. This is how the game is played, and unless the truth is told, unvarnished, it will always be a facade of pretense.

Just because Kumar Sangakara was able to hit a leather ball and catch a leather ball better than many others, it does not mean that he is good at other things.

If he is not competent and have conflicts on other things, then he must go.

However, why should this rule apply to sportsmen? It is not applied to politicians.

By the way, have all those MaRa inspired killers been apprehended and punished?

        Amarasiri,

“Just because Kumar Sangakara was able to hit a leather ball and catch a leather ball better than many others, it does not mean that he is good at other things.”

Now that you know about hitting and catching, can you tell us about his skills at scratching balls?

If the event was opened to public including miners, and alcohol was served free, then police should have arrested the organizers..now police must answer. .

        NO politician is EVER…EVER well-meaning.

This has nothing to do with Sanga…he is now Bodhi siras scapegoat.

He said the organisers should be “whipped with toxic stingray tails”- a brutal medieval punishment.”- confirming him as a warlord.

His comments have drawn wide international attention and on music Billboards website.

Bodhi Siras supporters sees this as a lucrative business and want to take over.

its not fair on our part to hit sanga.- he has been the gentleman!

What kind of society do we have? There is a vulgar musical show and the president interferes and talks about whipping. There is devastation of forest in Wilpattu and he asks for a report and then sleeps.

People are fighting over the musical show. They insult a reputed sportsman.

Don’t we have laws in this country? If the show was against the law in letter or spirit then let the wheels of justice grind. Do we want our President to go about with whip cheered by priests and the like of some commentators here. Is that his role? By this action MS has overstepped justice and fair play.

“This is how they are trying to protect our culture, Some people may criticise me talking about these issues. But I am a Sinhala-Buddhist. It’s my duty to talk about these matters,”
So, Buddhist don’t drink? Sri Lanka is among the highest consumers of liquor and 70% of our population is Sinhala Buddhist; so who’s fooling whom? First thing is our Buddhist leaders and the prelates must stop being hippocrits. There is so much wrong done by Buddhist leaders/prelates (such as the BBS) that harms Buddhism and our culture than taking a drink, so why not talk about those and correct them first. Every politician is a toper, ask Kehelia Rabukwella.

No one quite does fake self righteous indignation like us Sri Lankans.
On one side the president and his pseudo culture/Buddhist protection rhetoric and on the other the likes of Kumar and the Anti-Narcotic Activists!

We love to exaggerate our fake morality.

How many of us have seen burning human corpses on tires? All over Sri Lanka. Didn’t we look the other way?

All of a sudden Kumar and Mahela are the worst citizens? If you read their apology today you will realize they are both men of class.

They made a few mistakes trying to front an event of that scale in SL. For the first time. They own up to it. They are Gentlemen. Unlike our corrupt politicians.

Cut both Kumar and Mahela some slack!

PS: I remind our President GOSL’s countless fleet of BMWs & Defender Jeeps used by his useless cronies are financed partly through sky high alcohol taxes.

If Sanga is to step down for this then these same Anti narcotics guys should have rallied much earlier to send MR home after he advocated the Mathata Thitha policy.. we all know how well that was implemented! Just get off your high horses guys.. give these chpas a break. They tried to do something different with good intentions I’m sure, yet it backfired & they are owning up to it. So give them a chance..

Alcohol is not an illegal drug. It is clear that the president has unleashed a wave of intolerant and invasive “thought police” whose aim is to impose some kind of fundamentalist medieval law on the country.

This started with his support extended to Veronikas defender squadron who kidnapped a young man and illegally detained him because of his relationship with a young woman. The police have been ordered by the president not to arrest Veronika and not to investigate her illegal activities.

By the 9th of January we will have this braapalanaya in place with its sting ray tails and this will soon be followed by public whippings, cutting off limbs, stoning to death and beheading. The rainbow revolution is under attack by some “Proud Sinhala Buddhist Culture”. Yahapalanaya has been thrown out by Braapalanaya.

Sri Lankans will be banned from using polythene, and from having sex, wearing bras and using condoms by this “Proud Sinhala Buddhist Culture”from the 1st of January 2016. Relationships between males and females will be banned. Sex will be declared illegal and Veronika will be appointed as the first Minister for the control of sexual relations.

      Crazyoldmans

You give us the shivers when you speculate “Relationships between males and females will be banned. Sex will be declared illegal..” in this Resplendant Isle. Worse! If Aiyo Sirisena asks Gandassara and the BBS to be the Cultural Police to ensure the Siknhala-Buddhist edict is observed.

Are we going back to those dark days in pre-Victorian England when even wife and husband were forced to engage in physical contact only with the King’s Certificate. I am told this precious document was called Fornication under Certification from the King – acronym FUCK. The latter was only mentioned in whispers in English-speaking countries for long until the decadent American Literati in the New World, the lower end that is, decided to use it en masse. It is not entirely erroneous to say the word is known to those billions in the world who do not speak English at all. More than even Hello.

That is the Sri Lanka Buddhist culture

    • 2
      10

That is a very unfair and disgraceful comment made without any evidence, unless of course, Rajash has been feeling under the robes of a large enough sample of Buddhist monks in his study. The question also arises as to whether he has been feeling under the robes of priests, Poosaris of his own religion and Mullahs too or whether he had a special taste for seeking out Buddhist priests.

Rajash, you say that you don’t need any evidence. That is called blind faith and it is due to that kind of blind faith that you guys followed your megalomaniacal leader VP. We waited a long time expecting you guys to see reason and finish him off the way did our counterpart Wijeweera. But that did not happen. So we finished him off most unceremoniously, I must admit.
Being a Buddhist, I follow what is said in the Dhamma, specifically in this case, the Kalama Sutta.

•Do not go upon what has been acquired by repeated hearing (anussava),
          •nor upon tradition (paramparā),
          •nor upon rumor (itikirā),
•nor upon what is in a scripture (piṭaka-sampadāna)
          •nor upon surmise (takka-hetu),
          •nor upon an axiom (naya-hetu),
          •nor upon specious reasoning (ākāra-parivitakka),
•nor upon a bias towards a notion that has been pondered over (diṭṭhi-nijjhān-akkh-antiyā),
          •nor upon another’s seeming ability (bhabba-rūpatāya),
•nor upon the consideration, The monk is our teacher (samaṇo no garū)
So,Kalamas, when you yourselves understand (avabodha) that it is true then accept it and take decisions based on it.

          SADHU! SADHU!

Watch and learn from us Sinhalese and perhaps you can release yourself from the Simiiformes genes in your genome and become at least a Ponginae Pongo in your next birth.

By the way, is your cage in the Tampa Lowry zoo? In that case those robed guys who gave you cigarettes are not Buddhist priests. They must be followers of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

            Hello Edwin

I am not sure why you have to drag VP in to this. If you cant win an argument you guys drag VP in to it. what a shame.
I have lived in Sinhala areas in Sri Lanka and I have seen with my eyes monks smoking and drinking in a clandestine manner

so you dragging VP or making sarcastic remarks about Tampa zoo only goes to show that you have lost the argument

VP is embarrassing isn’t it? Sorry about that. Even I feel embarrassed because he is a Sri Lankan and we all a hand in producing this monster.

Regarding the smoking and drinking monks, I must say that one swallow does not make a summer.

I am sure there are many bad monks who do worse things than drinking and smoking. But there are very pious ones too. Even at Buddha’s time, there were many bad monks. The Vinaya laws were modified many many times by Buddha himself to cover these loop holes, with these guys trying their best to creep through every available one.

We believe that a Puthujjana becomes perfect only on becoming an Arahat. Others are all imperfect and give in to various temptations.

But to paint them all the same, as you have done and to make a general statement would be counterproductive unless you simply want a fight and hurt felings rather than trying to understand.

I also take back the comment about the zoo, not because I am afraid of loosing, but because I am sorry about that.

    BRANDY AMBASSADOR
Please resign from the Brand Ambssodor – Anti Narcotics Activists. You don’t deserve to hold such exemplary position while promoting alcohol & drugs, and be part of public indulgence and vulgar exposition of sex & love. If you have some dignity don’t disgrace the cause of anti-narcotics activists in our society trying to save future generations.

You have mixed your priorities by money sucking from higher society at the expense of the values of our culture by organizing such events. You & your colleagues Crabs, Sex & Love with alcohol flow only deserves you to be The Brandy Ambassadors of Sri Lanka.

Remember that Development of Tourism is not promoting vulgarism, sex & love at the expense of our values. Sri Lanka as a tour destination have greater things to offer than indecency and erosion of values. Please go and read the latest United Nations Sustainability Development Goals 2015-2030 to understand how to help improve human quality in the path of eradicating inequality & development, including tourism.

Shame on both you guys for disgracing our country, our culture and values that innocent Sri Lankans are long proud of. It only impresses the size of your cricketing brains.

.This is height of madness .Why are we so anxious and emotionally packed as a nation.Where is the logic and common sense.
Folks are we living in a Sharia state. There may be pitfalls in this gig but nothing so disastrous has happened.Alcohol is seen in in musical, big match and why should sanga resign form anti narcotic because of this event. This is crazy. The two ladies deserve a warning for their mishap and that’s it.Let us move and focus on more burning issues.Mahela and Sanga should not be disheartened by this experience .We need people to try innovative things and all may not go right .

Priya – I totally agree with your sentiments expressed on this issue. Its not Mahela’s and Kumar’s friends and relatives revelled and mis-
behaved at the concert, its the rich youth of Sri Lanka who were the audience. It is very unfortunate that Mahela & Kumar were out of the country and in UK signing future contracts with cricketing clubs, while this incident happened and why should Kumar resign from the Brand Ambassador post, which is an honorary position . In fact they both, frightened that anything drastic could happen to their reputation, jumped the gun and promised compensation to the ticket holders, which they should not have done, though some members of the audience became unruly. Some of us witnessed the respect, the American spectators paid to Sanga & Mahela when they participated in cricket games organized to promote Cricket in USA, by another famous cricketer Shane Warne in New York, Houston & L.A. in America., where all past cricketing stars, including Tendulkar, took part and Sanga became the man of the series, a proud moment for Sri Lanka and the Sri Lankans.

The writer, who could be a member of SLC, should not have wasted time on Sanka and instead, should have written to the President to get the police to learn crowd control and to religious preachers to preach
      the citizens, good behaviour.

Sanga can say bye bye to the U.K. High commission posting or for that matter to any of his political aspirations?

    • 8
      5

Rajash – Sanga has already rejected the request by the President to take up the post of High Commissioner for UK as he did not want to stand in the way of another career diplomat taking the place. That’s
sportsmanship and the blast from president against the organizers of this event, may have something to do with this.

  • 15
    11

Why are you blaming Mahela and Sanga? Blame the personnel who acted in a such manner. Blame the parents and certain segment of society.
Mahela and Sanga, THANK YOU for coming forward to apologise for the short comings. You both kept in the right spirit , when others were down with alcohol spirits. Keep the Srilankan flag flying high.

  • 9
    2

It is a pity that the President seems to act along with his heart unfortunately worn in his sleeve. He must not allow emotions rule his decisions; appointing sportsmen, and actors/ actresses for important diplomatic jobs is a real mistake. Often such people themselves react emotionally, and so are lacking in a balanced head when it comes to dealing with international issues that needs experience and capability to analyze causes and effects, and where their decisions land the country and its people in international politics. Hitting a ball with a skill or catching it is one thing, fielding political issues is another thing.

Exactly correct this man is no longer suitable to be the brand ambassador for nati-narcotic activist. they are double faced money greedy idiots. we had a lot of faith in these two guys. we thought these two (Mahela and Sanga) are real patriotic gentlemen cricketers who will do some to our society. what these two Jokers doing is tempting our younger genertation to drink alcohol and enjoy with girls in public like Sangakkara kissed the lips of his wife in public going against our rich culture. I feel this short comment is more than enough for Snga and Mahela to understand the damage they did to our younger generation and the country by organising a alcohol filled musical show.We all know U Two are world famous talanted cricketers but we never knew that U R money greedy Businessmen who do any cheap activity to fill up yours pocket. it’s a shame and sad to hear that u guys are sitting on ur brains rather than acting like intelligent ambassadors.

“If the organisers of a musical event deserve lashes simply because some crazy women hurl their undies at a visiting artiste then what is the punishment that should be meted out to a female MP who organises an abduction, has it carried out by her bodyguards who use her own vehicle for that purpose, and subjects the victim to a kangaroo trial in her own party office?”

Above is a quote from an editorial. In that case shouldn’t both Sanga and Hirunika resign?

It is not necessary to be a teetotaler in order to be appointed as a “Brand Ambassador” for any cause.
If this condition is insisted upon, there will never be ‘ambassadors’ even in the foreign service.

Kumar and Sanga need not apologise for anything.
They are gentlemen who blazed Lanka’s trail in the field of sport.

Young people who could afford, paid good money to enjoy themselves in their own way, in private.
No one has the right to foist his own brand of “morality” on others, as long as no laws were broken.

Mahela and Kumar should not be hauled over the Coals because of a remiss on the part of the Organisers. Both lads are excellent Brand Ambassadors for the whole of Sri Lanka – in and out of the field.
As well brought up kids, they have both come out to extend their regrets and have even assured to make up to those who got a bad deal. The trouble with Sri Lanka is we do not know who our friends are and who not.

Bat on, chaps. For every adverse comment against you there is a hundred in favour of you. Don’t let this minor lapse bother you too much.
Next time, make sure you have a few learned well-meaning friends to consult with before you embark on high profile events.

      Good-luck and Happy New Year.

It is truly amazing that such a massive hullabaloo has been created over this matter.

Ian Botham who had love, sex and a broken bed in the Caribbean in the early 1980’s is knighted and treated with respect and decorum.

Tolerance, patience, forgiveness ….. these are the hallmark essentials in a decent civilized society. Appreciation is another.

If Kumar and Mahela slipped up, – and I don’t think they did, as their intention was honourable. Together, they have brought more honour to this country than all the big names in parliament put together, several times over.

    Got it?

They have brought more honour than perhaps all the ambassadors put together, barring just a handful.

    Got it?

So suggest all moralists within and without parliament to shut themselves up and get on with catching the pigs that murdered Thajudeen for a start.

    Got it?

“Let those who have never sinned, cast the first stone”.

Our President, the Honorable Maithripala Sirisena has been well tutored by Mahinda Rajapakse for over a decade. He is a very special bull in a china shop, untethered and aimless, driven by the obsession to remain ‘King Bull’. We can expect to have a lot of fun, if we can ignore the disasters and tragedies that will follow.

Kumara Sangakkara is obsessed with money. He appears in hundreds of high profile advertisements raking in millions. We all know some products are dubious and not good for the community. But Kumara Sangakkara does not care. [Edited out] Then the infamous Crabs Ministry where Kumara with Mahela; both supposed to be good Buddhists, kill hundreds of crabs a day by putting them in boiling water. I know Kumara bought an island in Weligama, I can say money earned in sinful ways will not last

“Now that you know about hitting and catching”….. My Foot.

As far as I can remember Kumar was no good wicket keeper. He missed vital, easy catches at crucial moments and Sri Lanka paid a huge price. He was big time ‘bokkuwa’ behind the stumps.

No one had the guts to drop him from the team due to his powerful family background.

Thanks to family power, Kumar was a permanent fixture of the team for good 15 years.

Of course, when someone plays continuously like that for 15 years, they will score runs. Same story as M Atapattu, who scored 5 ducks in his first 5 innings (no one will get chances like Marvan, but, brother in law Ajurna insisted that he wants him in the team

Kumar Sangakkara entered the team thanks to his powerful lawyer father in Kandy. To accommodate Kumar, Sri Lanka cricket closed the door to Romesh Kaluwitharana, brilliant wicket keeper/batsman who was such a fine player

Yes, any idiot can play cricket but not everyone can play it well. The same goes for those who respond on this site – any idiot can do so but not all make sense!

Oh, come on. Sanga has already done much for his Sri Lankan (I say Sri Lankan, rather than Sinhalese) brethren. So, your gripe is without foundation.

What I find interesting about Sanga’s actions is that it is totally the opposite to how those stupid fellows in Tamil Nadu have behaved. They have compelled the IPL not to let any SL players play at venues in the state. I hope they sit up and take notice that the SL people (as represented by Sanga) are not so racist and narrow minded – we are a lot more civilised.

Everything is in millions these days!

If somebody is willing to shell out 30,000 bucks to watch something that sounds better on DVD in their own home, I believe they deserve what they got. My sympathies to the 5000 bucks gallery crowd. They were less ignorant.
If some woman wants to throw her bra, it isn’t Maithri’s business.
If somebody wants to drink, that isn’t his business either.

What is “Anti-narcotics”? Does Alcohol come under narcotics? If “yes” then why is it not banned in SL?
Did Kumar beg for the post?
Maybe they can give Mervyn the post. He is much suitable for it.

People like Sangakkara, Murali, Matthews, Russel Arnold never played for the country but for themselves

Yes, they scored big runs, but, to increase their average

    • 3
      1

These are professional cricketers who played/play the game for a living and in doing so they must necessarily put their own interests first. In this, how different are they from, say, tellers and clerks and officers working at a bank who give of their best at work, in order to advance their career prospects. They don’t do that for the glory of the bank.

Cricketers who play to ‘increase their averages’ will be striving hard and that can only be to the benefit of the national team.

This business of ‘playing for the country’ sounds all very grand and noble but I believe we need to reconsider that notion in light of circumstances today, when most (if not all) players are professionals, unlike in the days of old when for many players there was little or no reward other than the glory of playing for one’s country.

BTW, when did Murali ‘score big runs’?

Sadly you don’t know the meaning of patriotism

people like sanath j, romesh kalu, upul chandana, hasahan thilake, rangana herath never played for average but for the team.

It is only your assertion that Sanga and Mahela did not play for the team. And while we are about it, how come if Sanath was such a team man, that he wanted to play even when he was long past it. You remember how he got himself selected to play just one ODI in England?

Don’t just denigrate the likes of Sanga and Mahela. They have been fine servants of SL cricket and done the nation proud.

    The Organizers:

Kumar and Mahela were quite intelligently avoided talking about indecent behaviours of some of the spectators as this is fully out of their hands as organizers, while they did apologize certain short-comings in organizing and promised to refund those who face injustice against their ticket value. I believe the organizers have learnt a lesson from this in better organizing, and for disciplining the crowd is concerned, probably certain preconditions can be included with the ticket sales.

    The President:

President slams organizers..His comments have drawn wide international attention and on music Billboards website. Does he really have to do this? Or did he mess up his priorities? Or did he just wanted to suppress others such as bikkus or his political opponents taking advantage voicing or wanting some popularity among the common masses? Or just showing his own rural conservative bringing up? Why would a “Mithri” like president come out to talk about a girl throwing bra in a concert while keeping silent on one of their MP’s taking law unto her own hands? Or is it a diversion tactics? For me quite confusing..

The president has gone so lower this time and I think this should have been better handled by the president than this. While this will discourage greatly any of world class celebrities coming down to SL may not be that worriable, this also shows the world that SL as a conservative nation that is far still behind with cultural imprison.

        @Bandit

        You are right

Polonnaruwa Man tried to make communal and racist political capital on the back of a non-event, claiming “deshiya de” and “Sanskruthiya”

Like many of his moves before (First Son/First Daughter/First Brother scandals), he underestimated the degree of backlash.

Did he succeed in convincing the majority of his offended sensibilities ?

Or does he consider that most of the backlash is from the ‘Elites’ who are a minority and can be comfortably ignored.. i.e. He doesn’t give a damn !

The likes of Sanga and Mahela, and several others too, become popular using the talents they are gifted with. When they reach the height of popularity and respsect they lose their balance and follies follow.
