Lasantha Murder: Sri Lanka’s Commitment To Law And Order Under Watch

The Criminal Investigation Departments revelations to Mt Lavinia Courts in connection with the assault, torture and kidnapping of Keith Noyahr and the murder of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge has stirred a hornets nest internationally. Many donor nations and others with whom Sri Lanka has Trade agreements, Human as well as other rights are keenly observing the outcome of the above mentioned investigations.

President Sirisena and Prime Minister Wickremesinghe have no or little option but to let the Criminal Investigations Department continue the investigations unfettered. Sri Lanka’s image and commitment to respect Law and Order will be tested on the outcome of these investigations.

The inquiries conducted thus far and reported to Court show a clear direction coupled with a definite line of command. Inquiries also reveal clearly, the perpetrators who carried out these crimes did not know the victims. Reports to Court reveal that the Rajapaksa regime including Gotabaya Rajapaksa had six years from 2008 to conclude these inquiries. They did not for obvious reasons.

The evidence before Court must necessarily end with charges being framed against the suspects not withstanding how high up the ladder it may lead. Sri Lanka’s commitment to Law and Order and her International image depends on it. The killing of ACF employees did not go away and the Nation was considered a pariah State until the Government changed in 2005.

No State is Independent any more. They are all Interdependent. (By Suranimala Umagiliya)
