United Left Front (ULF) Chairman Dr. Jayampathy Wickremeratne’s name being listed as a possible National List MP of the UPFA was reported in the Sunday Times.
This is how their Political Editor responded to the statement issued by the ULF: “The Presidential Secretariat did ask Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) to include the name of Jayampathy Wickremeratne in the UPFA National List.
“As made clear in the political commentary in the Sunday Times, “the list is awaiting approval.”
“The Sunday Times learnt that his name was left out in the final list formulated on Sunday (tonight). It will be publicized today.
“Mr Wickramaratne confirmed last night that his name was in the UPFA National List. He said he did not wish his name to be placed since former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was given UPFA nomination.”
When Colombo Telegraph asked, Jayampathy Wickramaratne said; “Maitripala Sirisena had sugegsted my name earlier, but how can I be in Mahinda Rajapaksa’s list”
However in a statement Wickeremnaratne yesterday said; “The United Left Front (ULF) which was formed by sections of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party, the Communist Party of Sri Lanka and the Democratic Left Front that supported the Common Candidate, Maitripala Sirisena, at the last Presidential elections has decided to align itself with the section of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party that is opposed to the candidature of Mahinda Rajapaksa.
“Accordingly, while maintaining its separate political identity, the United Left Front will contest the forthcoming Parliamentary elections under the umbrella of the United National Front for Good Governance in order to consolidate the victory of 08 January and prevent the re-emergence of the authoritarian regime that the people of Sri Lanka defeated.
“Keerthi Kariyawasam, member of the Western Provincial Council, will contest from the Kalutara District while Dr. Jayampathy Wickramaratne and Raja Uswetakeiyawa will be on the national list of the United National Front for Good Governance.”
