Let’s Hope Year 2014 Will Herald The Restoration Of Democracy In Sri Lanka

By Shyamon Jayasinghe –

Shyamon Jayasinghe

Sri Lanka is the realm of the Absolute Star. Our Leader has all within his grip. Like a cat that has caught a rat one observes a look of perennial satisfaction in Mahinda Rajapaksa’s face. For he smiles and smiles. Even in a temporary moment of what looked like him being  powerless when David Cameron did the old British Governor’s march to the North, our Leader beamed with his moustache.

Let’s be honest, what Sri Lanka now has is a quasi-military dictatorship headed by Rajapaksa. His regime continues to don the same democratic trappings that this once-free island nation had for decades after political independence. Elections are held regularly; there is a parliament and there are opposition parties. To the outsider all looks above board. However, our ‘democracy’ is only skin deep. Appearance and reality diverge sharply. An autocrat is in place backed by military units being set up in the periphery and called in to do the job of the police as we saw at Weliveriya a few months ago. Protests and revolts can be crushed, while a once-honorable and independent judicial system has been replaced by a pliant one that may adjudicate against the protestors and victims of executive abuse of power.

We see a dramatic parallel of appearance and reality in the collective behavior of the monks of the JHU in parliament who drape the sivura and talk the Dhamma but who by their language of silence over the bizarre happenings in governance reveal that they back high-level corruption, the drug connection, the casinos, the flouting of the constitution and rule of law, and state violence toward detractors. The JHU’s usefulness is in its symbolic status of representing Sinhala-Buddhist nationalism. Authoritarian regimes have been known to manipulate ideology. This is our governing establishment’s ideology and its modus operandi of gaining and keeping an electoral support base prepared to overlook abuse and incompetence.

Nationalism and anti- Semitism was Adolf Hitler’s ideological base; nationalism was Mussolini’s ideology; communism was Hitler’s and Mao Tse-Tung’s. Funnily, as if to make the Lankan regime contemporarily relevant, nationalism is also the ideology of North Korea’s ‘Dear Leader.’ The Communist ideology drove USSR into bankruptcy and demolition. Nationalist ideology drove the German nation into the abyss. Likewise Sinhala-Buddhist nationalism will drive the island nation to division and fracture. The rump of the terrorist LTTE and its backers world-wide are (hands-crossed) hoping to see this madness developing to the point when the lost hopes of Eelam can become achieved reality.

And if one observes the antics of another set of yellow- robed persons who style themselves ‘Buddha putras,’ going round the country burning churches and mosques and  closing Muslim trading establishments and beef stalls it seems clear the madness is allowed to conflagrate. Government is silent instead of asking these persons to go back to their temples if, indeed, they are from temples. Groups like the Bodu Bala Senawa ( ‘Senawa’ meaning‘army regiments), Ravana Balaya and what- not operate without hindrance in an ambience of state permissiveness.

Wise rulers and those who work genuinely for the welfare of the people will learn from the tragic historical consequences of nationalist extremism mentioned above. They would adjust their sales appropriately. On the other hand, does Lanka have such a ruling establishment?  If we have one, it wouldn’t squander the peoples’ money on useless projects like the port without ships, the airport without planes and the International Sports Stadium in Hambantota without sport (unless by ‘sport’ one means the hunting of wild animals). At the same time, they wouldn’t keep projects like Mihin Air in the air; they wouldn’t waste public funds to upkeep inept Ministries and  create unnecessary overseas diplomatic posts to find jobs for their boys; they wouldn’t violate the constitution; they wouldn’t destruct the independence of the judiciary; they wouldn’t close-down over 400 of our schools; they wouldn’t deprive our hospitals of drugs letting our cancer patients lie in improvised beds in the exposed corridors of Kandy Hospital crying  for these life-bringing medicines.

Mahinda Rajapaksa was a one-time street-fighter for human rights. He did some sort of long walk by way of the pada yatra. Given power, he could have turned into even a weak shadow of a personage like Nelson Mandela after the latter’s ‘long walk’. That would have been enough for us. He had all the power and popular backing for a meaningful and lasting contribution to Sri Lanka. In particular, having destroyed terrorism with the help of General Fonseka and his men what couldn’t he have done? The sky was the limit with international aid waiting to pour on Lanka to restore and to rehabilitate. It is fair comment to state that no previous ruler in Lanka’s history of three thousand years had such an opportunity.

Yet, our leader was made of different genes. His vision had problems and his character was different. He was seduced by the possibility of converting the bahubootha vyawasthawa of JR into an absolute dictatorship. He preferred the model of an absolute fuhrer who would reign with the help of a circle of  “power lords” the latter being permitted to amass gains from their little ruling ambits, in return for their support.  In the meantime, he would ensure that all checks and balances are rendered impotent. The classic statement of Lord Acton which has become clichéd, namely that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely has manifested itself to the detriment of the country..

Ruling establishments do need power to act decisively. There isn’t any doubt about that. But didn’t the democracy we had since independence achieve so much with its democracy and its periodical smooth transition of power? Didn’t we build and rebuild massive irrigation schemes and revive the great ancient hydraulic civilization of our kings? Gal Oya, Minneriya, Parakrama Samudra, Kawdulu wewa?  The recent Mahaweli Development Scheme? Free Trade Zones? Didn’t we build a great system of Maha Vidyalayas,  Madya Maha Vidyalyays, and tertiary education institutions? A fine health system?  Didn’t Sri Lanka have a unified country with harmonious relationships among the all ethnic and religious groups?

Above all, did we not win the war against terrorism while a democratic system of government prevailed merely with the promulgation of Emergency Regulations under such a democratic system?  Weren’t all those powers adequate for us in the worst of times? Then why did we want the 18th Amendment? Why did we want the politicization of the elections, the police and the judiciary?

What went wrong is where we are now.  Where we will go from here isn’t hard to see. (CONCLUSION)

its idiotic to expect the govt to reign in the BBS or the ravana balaya or the JHU . if they did this where will it stop . why not reign in the TNA and the UNP too ?

That is exactly what this Government is doing, ‘Reigning’ with the help of the BBS, Sinhala Ravaya, JHU etc. They should try ‘Reining in’ the BBS, Sinhala Ravaya, and JHU, not the TNA and UNP!

Good one! Madam CBK must return to active politics and save Lanka and SLFP from the abyss!
Colombo, particularly Colombo 7 – Independence area and Victoria Park as well as, Chatham St. in Fort and Battaramulla are giant military cantonments – full of military units and cantonments – GOta’s private militia are at the heart of the Jarapasa empire to secure the CORRUPT and uneducated ruling Rajapaksa family of Thugs and their cronies …

Paranoid Gota’s military business cronies have cut all the bit trees that line Colombo to make money from the timber and because the dictators fears that a landmine will be planted in trees to assassinate him as the LTTE used to..

Being on the US, he should have learned to shape up himself before daring to drop this kind of rubbish.

Thank you for succinctly stating the issues and the problem faced by the country and its citizens. The dictators will use religion and race to their advantage, to maintain their hegemony, and the stage is being set for the next calamity.

    Nice piece Shyamon.

However most people in Sri Lanka don’t look at things with drab pessimistic glasses the way you do. They see good roads to travel in. They are not hindered at innumerable check points anymore. The schools are functioning and examinations held on precise dates. The hospitals are still functioning despite bed space not equating to your exacting first world standards. The police by and large can be expected to respond to citizens needs despite some errant officers taking interrogation a bit too far. There are far fewer interruptions to the power supply. And food is plentiful despite being beyond the reach of those in the bottom end of the economic tree. But that is true even in first world economies; there are some who fall through the welfare net. So go ahead Shyamon and pull the wool over the eyes of gullible CT readers with your doom and gloom messages – the fact remains otherwise. As you correctly observed the moustachioed MR is smiling – he has many reasons to smile and be genial about.

And before all the incensed CT readers jump up and nail me to the wall, I just want to remind you, what we the BBS engage in, is a bit of a drama, a side show and like most side shows will lose relevance sooner rather than later.

In fact Sinhalese majority societies have a substantial responsability for managing thier own future. It cannot be start strongly enough that the sirens of viloence and Tamil-extermisim have never seduced the overwhelming majority of their peoples.
More than ever as the people awaken,it is essential that Sri lankan society including political parties and intellectuals remain mobilized and alert against anti-sovergenity and anti-democratic led by Tamil-terrorist.That it develop a geuine strategy to creat free and democratic society, that in the end it creat the condition for New Political and economic relation with our social forces inside and outside Sri lanka.
The presence th New players from the East, staring with Indian, China Brizal ,is now resetting the parameters of the Globle Economic and political order.A new path to another broder Spring bounded this era by East and west.

Unlikely that democracy can be restored without an about turn or downfall of the regime. Economic stagnation, inflation and indebtedness is likely to increase. The bubble of arrogance and impunity needs to burst to bring people back to mother earth.

Mr. Shyamon Jayasinghe is a good man. He feels for his country and all its people from faraway – and yet Down Under. As a former Senior government official, he sees how a government can ruin a country – an entire nation for generations to come. Without a doubt a fascist dictatorship, lead by a few rapacious illiterates, has taken over the land. Sri Lanka is a write off at least for the next five decades – that is providing it does not snap into two soon.

Sad .. Sad.. Sadness is intelligent, wise & mature people like you could see what went WRONG and where we are NOW… But what percentage of SL people could see this…
If the majority don’t know where they are now, then how could they see where they are heading to…. Sad. sad..

The challenge Sri Lankan democracy and anti-sovergenity by Terrorist movement of LTTE, that emerged NOT spontaneous but it has one or several FOERING HANDS manipulated; those events not only events of terrorist attacks themselves, but opinions as well.
Sri Lankan democracy and people’s sovergenity it became clear that many question still remain unanswered. Confirmed facts our nation sovergenity and democracy co-existed with often-unverifiable hypotheses. We as nation making sense of past Thirty years war events called for prudence.
Such movement of Tamil Eelam could not possible have begun without the West and Indian guiding or even masterminding events. What we witnessing was NOT liberation of Tamils or democracy at all. But merely another form of control in the guise so-called democratization. The movements and terrorist would then and now used to UNDERMINE SRI LANKA AND REGIONAL STABILITY AND BRING FOREING DEPENED TRANSITION UNDER THE MILITARY AND ECONOMY, AS WELL AS CULTURAL CONTROL. PEOPLE OF SRI LANKA NEED CAUTION OPTIMISM!
Indeed further analysis and commitment above and beyond the wide-eyed excitement of the movement of Democratic may well an open to all people and nationalities of Sri Lankans, REAL PROSPECTS OF DEMOCRATION AND SELF-DETERMANTION OF THIER LIBERATION.

You says that “His vision had problems and his character was different”
I wonder whether MR has a vision. What is visible as his vision is Familial Rule by hook or crook. He thinks that wearing Kurahan Satakaya is the glorious depicting of his own style democracy, which is in tatters. So speaking of restoration of democracy under MR rule is a mockery and a joke. He doesn’t have a capacity to govern a country but he is fitting to be a village headman in Medamulana.

The RRRR strategy is not simple! It has a multi faceted approach, which has been learnt by experience of the maha raja and many dictators as well as fascit terrorists.
    1. Take over and convert the major pillars of democracy!
(A). The independant judiciary by offering posts and promoting the corrupt like the CJ, AG, Supreme Court Judges. Etc. Even some lady judges who appeared independant I believe are now bribed or threatened. Sad to see old friends in a mess on the verge of retirement. Yes it started with Felix R B which was extended by JR and now it is beyond comprehension! If you don’t tow the line (after doing so for awhile!) You will be hacked!
(B). The defence establishment. Get rid of patriots and install puppets. Whether it be the police, army, Navy or Air Force! Many of them are people punished by SF for alliance with the LTTE! Some had to go abroad to avoid the targetting! Some others have been bribed with Diplomatic posts! Little do they realize that they have in fact been neutralized from revols/coups! Since they were patriots at least in the yesteryear!

    (C) The Administrative service. We no longer have the straight Civil Servants who were independant! Most of todays SLAS officers are clerks who joined with the OL certificate, withe removal of the age barrier they did an external degree (some with fraudulent Indian degrees) and it was easy to do the AR & FR etc since they knew the rules Now they come with the minister and go with the minister! The path laid by Sirima and JR! Now they are allowed to be powerful and corrupt (eg bribery commissioner) as long as they do not surpass the Royals (only ‘sillara salli’ ) and facilitate the the millions in $ by the Royals and to a lesser extent the Ministers.
(D). The Authority of parliament. It is so easy to buy buttas with millions of rupees if not $! The recent jump by the Kurunegala DJ Or even the microcephalic Pabha are good examples. We saw the foundation established with RP’s impeachment, and then the frogs started jumping too and fro! Some many a times like SB, Bandula and our perceived academic GL! It has now been observed that groups in the opposition are also bribed! With the Sirikotha road block and many other incidents most people though RW was… now others think the young premadasa is! What about Tiran A who joined SF to get even with MR on attacks on the house etc, realized SF was useless to get his businesses going. Now he surreptitiously support the government with his Mawbima mefia network. MR will allow him his profits as long as he is protected. One false move….he will have it!! Others have been blackmailed, eg Johny on the assasination affair, or some on land and tax matters eg. The famous educationist Mohanlala G and Earl..G. there are many more??
(E). The media. As long as as Lake House, Rupavahini, ITN, SLBC belongs to the government MR is ok? Some of them have been bought over by ‘front men’ of the family, eg. The Leader, Nation, Rivira etc. Even some anti govt websites have been silenced by bribes! Threats, bought over etc. ??
(F). The religious establishments. History reveal that the religious dignotories are useful in turning the tide of public opinion! Yes Benz cars did it at a time. Young Sajith thinks he can do it with a ‘sillara’ 50, 000! How naive is he to believe that this amount could replace millions! They could be blackmaiked with terrorist links, pornographic images or even by re introducing with retrospect the electricity tarrif which was long ago exempted! Inability to pay huge millions could quiten the religious leaders. This is blackmail in asubtle way. Some of historical RW allies like the Gangaramaya has turned turtle! Others are quiet and neutral.
(G). What about the academia? The UGC chairperson is a ‘Ape’ person introduced by Chamal, through through Banana projects in this banana republic initially as VC even though the person received the least number of votes in the senate. However the Pres has the final say. It is followed by the hubby with hardly any qualifications to suceed her as the new VC! All VCs have to be affilliated to the regime to qualify appointment! This has led to the appointment of senior staff also to be politically linked! What a shame our university system has gone to the dogs!
Is it different in the school system. Would the govt appoint a SF or RW supporter as a prinicipal in a big school?
(H). The business establishment. The business people cannot support anyone other than the MARA regime! What happened to poor old Harry! (He is now dormant) the insurance corp, Appollo, Pelwatta are eg of takeovers and blackmail! What happened to RW blind supporter? His Sevanagala sugar, non commissioning of road and building construction!, how many people have been affected? You either give some of your profits or we take over or make life impossible! In place we have got a new breed of insider dealers controlling the stock market taking over businesses! DP, NP, DJ, AD, Are some. Why did Pres’ s relation GW give up (also BOC CHAIR) or Thilak K, Lalith W’s wife Indrani give up? The extent of corruption was so great that they could not bear to watch! These guys have shaddows probably in the hierarchy not wanting to reveal their investments …..???? The reasons are obvious

Of course I have not mentioned all the pillars that have got corrupted nor all examples! You may fill it up!
Finally the regime has learnt something from Pirupaharan himiself! Can you remember Mahattaya who was killed getting popular and more powerful (Indian spy… was an excuse). Can you remember how Balasingham, Karuna and others went up and down in the hierarchy? Can you see what happened to Vaas G, Shirani B or Mervin. Or all the senior Ministers with little powers? We await to see the fate of former judge Balapatabendi, now the Commissioner of Bribery? He was exposed by MR’s own paper The Nation? Why aney??
Citizens of Sri Lanka stand up now! Our CT group is limited sometimes infilterated by MARAs bootlikers!!

Can Ranil and his latest ” Apey” Band deliver Democracy to our great majority of the inhabitant population who are celebrating another Bomb and Suicide attack free Festive Season ?…

Or, are the NGOs and their Media scrum hedging all their bets on a Cameron Pillai Harper Troika delivering one a la Syria and Egypt in March?… ?…

Sinhala Buddhists and their Monks are the only protection which the great majority have to protect them and preserve the the current freedom and peace. s

Merry X Mas and a few stubbies to you . and peace and prosperity to the great majority of the Srilankan Inhabitant population, the rural poor in particular.

!he UNP will not necessarily bring this evil to an end! We have seen they too have not been accountable in the past! Especially those who are vying for leadership! Ranil has shown that he cannot grapple with a ‘dodang goda’ (oranges). We also call him honest! If he is not honest with party members???What about compliance with MR at times?? In the West if you lose you are banished! Recently Kevin Rudd’s fate demonstrates this! Why can’t the opposition understand this. Many confess that they voted for SF but now they say with SF’s wings broken they have no option but to be with govt! The CHOGM ROADS become their excuses. Why doesn’t the UNP do an unbiased opinion poll and get a feedback! Adjust accordingly! If Ranil has to go he will have to! The same applies to Sajith and Ravi or any other. I suppose the UNP hierarchy does not want to face the truth! The opinion poll across the board of the population should have been done it long ago

The opposition as long as they are divided will never have a chance! It is MARA’S strategy keep the opposition divided! Buy them, blackmail them, threaten them or make them disappear! For the last one … the White Vans….they need someone else since Mervin and Vaas G are disempowered! Maybe Duminda S ???

The opposition should decide on the new leadership council. It could be UNP, SF party, Muslims, JVP, EVEN JHU AND TNL AS LONG AS THEY ARE HONEST AND HAVE NO ULTERIOR MOTIVES such as division of the country but should be able to lobby for the minorities, I know it will be in Utopia where you will find them. However the known no goers, no gooders have to be eliminated (not disappear) Better start now or they will have the election now and win before the opposition has time to stand up. If the opposition cannot understand the strategies of the RRRR then obviously they are NOT FIT TO GOVERN! Charisma of a leader with integrity and a firm stance in policy (not dictatorial) are some of the important criteria

SUBHA ANAGATHAYAK FOR ALL IN 2014

You mean manufacturing overnight a Sirasa-Superstar-like leader by popular SMS vote or something like that!!!??

“..Charisma of a leader with integrity and a firm stance in policy (not dictatorial) are some of the important criteria ..”

This is where the people of this country perennially got wrong and never learned from it yet. People totally messed up with 2005 vote and rejected Ranil thinking along those lines and now paying dearly for it. Yet they still haven’t understood their mistake and aiming to jump the pit in the noon in to which they fell in the night. And you are feeding them with adequate misguidance to get self destroyed!

Other than a few hiccups like above most of what you have written are very factual and relevant.

I agree with the writer that this government has a lot of shortcomings. But who do we elect in its place, I mean as the President? Should it be the joker who stick to his party leadership like glue against the opinion of the membership or a one from those that cannot effectively challenge him and win the leadership or reconcile under the leader however he was chosen? Or should we elect a bikku like Sobitha or ex CJ, Srirani like buccaneer character who has neither the political experience nor a political party to back them at the legislature as the President? In my opinion, these are all a recipe for a new mayhem in the country.

It is easy to get rid of a government by ‘Arab Spring’ like violent means but it is difficult to regain peace after commotions that follows. Even more difficult is for any government to continue whatever we have been achieved so far after such commotions. My fear is, that is exactly what the TNA and sponsor the rump LTTE is after.

The best examples of the scenario I have mentioned are the newly democratised Arab Spring countries like Libya, Egypt and etc, and war engrafted countries like Syria, South Sudan and etc who seek to enjoy ‘democracy’. Do we want to follow them? I say NO.

Shyamon, shall we drop this hypocricy?. When was there democracy in Sri Lanka or anywhere for that matter? Democracy is an ideal, a vision, a doctrine and a goal but far from a reality anywhere in the world and YOU should know that.

The vision that most Sri Lankans are in love with is not Democracy but Autocratic Aristocracy. Sri Lankans love to be beaten, tortured, raped – especially the males – and they love to be disappeared and murdered. THAT is why they elect thugs, torturers, rapists and murderers as their leaders.

Now you want these cool cats to be saddled with DEMOC – RATS!!!

You must be crazy. May they have the biggest fattest most violent and terrible dictator that the world has ever seen to be their leader and may he beat, torture, rape and murder every single citizen to the heights of their depraved delight. May all Sri Lankans suffer more and more under their leaders and may they enjoy their suffering more and more as well.

Srilanka’s current day situation is comparable to any where the city is filled with rabid dogs. SO long these dogs would not be removed, nothing towards achieving betterment for the sake of people will be stand still. All these development projects are just eyes washes them to stay in power by abusing majority of the speechless voices in the country.

Alone the fact that the budget just passed in the parliament last week is a greater evidence that they the rulers abuse state funds as if they are their family properties. Nearly 50% out of enitre budgetary funds for 2014 has been allocated for Rajapakshe brothers (MR, GR, BR), while offering petty gifts to the rest of ministers asking them to stay mum further All the bugger ministers stay as if they are powerless not reacting accordingly.
This is the ground reality of the country. So all these are clear to many, but still the masses believe what MR sprout through his most abusive mouth piece.
