Living A Lie: Rape And The Burning Muslim Shops

By Hameed Abdul Karim

Hameed Abdul Karim

Hameed Abdul Karim

The other day I came across an article that appeared in The Island titled ‘Buddha Sasana Ministry Invasion is a Rehearsal for Regime Change’ and was horrified to find the writer had casually justified the arson attack on a shop in Aluthgama owned by Muslims by claiming that this had happened because a young Sinhala Buddhist boy had been raped by the owner inside the shop.

The writer had gone to extents to twist the facts of the case to suit his ‘theory of justification’ blindly ignoring all the facts that were out there in the open days before the incident took place. The police had taken the shop owner into custody and kept him in the cop shop for one and a half days after which they were compelled to release him because there was no evidence at all to press charges.

To add insult to injury the writer states quite categorically that the boy, allegedly raped, was hospitalised. This is an absolute fabrication on his part. If this was the case, as he claims, then it would be only proper for him to check the hospital records.

Inside the Fashion Bug

Inside the Fashion Bug

According to media reports this boy in question had gone to the shop with his mother and it was at this point that the alleged incident had taken place. If the shop owner had actually raped the boy or abused him in any way then common sense suggests that quite a length of time would have passed for the act to take place. What was the mother doing while the boy was absent? Mothers usually don’t lose sight of their children when on an outing like going out shopping. Clearly this is a set up.

Another thing that your readers must consider that anybody trader of any faith will never commit such a vile crime in the place where he derives his income from fearing, what we might call, a divine backlash.

The writer then abrasively claims that in any such incident the shop would have been burned even if the culprit happened to be a Sinhala Buddhist! This is about the most ridiculous statement I have read in a long time. The media often reports cases of Sinhala Buddhist fathers raping their daughters and even grandfathers raping their grand children, but there have been no reports of their livelihoods been destroyed. Child abuse is happening as we speak and if we were to go by the twisted logic of the writer we must read of vindictive arson attacks quite often.

Moreover, in this case the CCTV footage vindicates the shop owner. If there was even a shred of evidence against him the police would never have let him go. What must be borne in mind is that the pretext for this attack is identical to the attack on the Muslim owned shop Fashion Bug at Pilyandala.

Take the reverse argument for a moment. Supposing a Sinhala Buddhist had raped a Muslim boy and a mob of Muslims had done the same thing that the mob of Sinhala Buddhists did to the Muslim owned shop in Aluthgama, would the writer or Sinhala Buddhists applaud and justify the crime? Why, there would be hell to pay if this ever happened.

Right thinking people who read this article in The Island would be angered by the casual manner in which the writer justifies and dismisses the burning of the Muslim owned shop, never mind to which faith or race they belong to. There is no doubt that this dastardly act was one based on unbridled racism.

All this brings in the role of the police. What were they doing all the while when they knew they had a situation on their hands? A situation that would cause a breach of the peace? Why did they give permission to carry out a protest march against the shop like as if it was a political rally? Or was this job consigned to the newly formed Religious Police? If so where were they?

In my stupidity I still believe there is a rule of law in this country. And in that frame of mind I think the law should have taken its course. If the Muslim trader had indeed raped the Sinhala Buddhist boy or any other boy he should have been taken into custody and dealt with, with the full force of the law.

As a civilised society (a claim that politicians often utter) we should be talking of apprehending the arsonists and about compensating the shop owner, but up until now nobody has been taken to task and the shop owner is left destitute. No police teams have been appointed to inquire into the matter even as a ploy to allay the fears of Muslims. Neither has any politician of the area ‘looked into the matter’ and promised to compensate the shop owner who probably voted for ‘his’ man or woman at the previous election. And the OIC of the police station in the area sits smugly in his seat oblivious to the crime that had been committed under his nose. Sri Lanka is certainly a ‘land like no other’.

Ela if not for CT you may be rotting in anger in some corner where no one will ever know there was a cardboard veeraya called Ela Polla aka “Tit Boi”.

Show some gratitude towards CT man, just by looking at pattern of your comments I can make out what you would be doing if there was no such forum to express your frustration.

Amarasiri keep pointing you to video, I am glad it’s not you who is accused in the video.
Saved by CT. Thanks CT for proving a forum to depressed, frustrated communal minded citizens of Lanka to vent their anger towards minorities in a controlled manner.

CT Keep up the good work, cut down the abusers without any mercy.

Having said all this, majority of my friends are Sinhalese I studied in a Singhala colligiya, all most all of them are very upstanding citizens of Sri Lanka. So I know only a handful of balu makko are like this.

          Len,

They have been watching cartoon for decades now and the results are quite evident in Egypt,Syria and Iraq.

The Arab countries are still being lenient on SL as, if you can see the situation is not out of control, as of now best method of getting SLG to act is through engagement this is like the carrot, the stick side of it is very strong reduce or stop petrol supply 1st at concessionary rates or reduce intake of labor from Sri Lanka. Both of this will have deep impact on Sri Lankan economy.

The SLG is fully aware of this situation, this could be a reason why it is played out in a much controlled manner. This is just a cartoon Lankan style until the next general election and presidential election.

On the other hand muslim organizations in Sri Lanka are striving to arrive to a peaceful solution, not a single retaliation is reported by Muslims. This is not by chance. This is due a very comprehensive awareness program carried out planned by Muslims scholars, put in to action through Friday sermons. Another activity put in place since last week is to meet all the head prelates of Pansals in Sri Lanaka, church leaders, kovil heads and so on to initiate dialog and educate them of false accusations carried out against Quran and Islam.

This is my opinion. At the end of the day majority of Sri Lankans want nothing but peace, stead jobs and better future. This is the universal dream of human being less people like Ela and likes.

She sent her grandson to school with the idea of providing him with proper education to make him a good person. The Buddhist monk in charge of the temple asked her to send the child to the temple and she sent him there because they were poor. There was no possibility for them to pay the money for tuition fees. That was the reason why they sent the boy to the temple school. When the child began to refuse going to the temple school so adamantly, grandmother had to look for the reason. It was then only that she discovered that the child who was sent to learn good behavior, ethics and Buddha’s Dharma from the monk had in fact been abused by the monk.

    Ela Kolla,

I did not defend ‘the child abusing shop owner’ as you call him. What I said is that if that were true he should be dealt with according to the law. I maintain the burning of his shop was a criminal act. Hope you will agree to that. Please read properly what I have said.

      Hammed,
Do you really expect “Ela Kolla” to understand civilians led by monks doing their own judgement and execution as right or wrong… SL President himself used similar scenario in his recent Al Jazeera interview and justified this kind of civilian violent acts. So how could “Ela Kolla” see this incident any different to his president Rajapakse?

    Mr. Hameed,

I read that article in Island imagine a main stream daily news paper reporting such unsubstantiated lies. Thank you for highlighting this.

It is indeed land like no other, as you mentioned much more heinous crimes are committed by so called singhala buddhist, I am not sure whether you recall there was a rape of underage girl by a politico in a hotel where he and his friend kept her for few days and raped her repeatedly. When she was sent off the 3 wheel driver and a friend also had their fill, and the law was notified the police costapal though why I should I lever my self out of this chain, and he too indulge himself for a rape.

Later it was learned it was the mother who gave the girl to the person in the beginning as she too was sleeping with him.

Now what happen to this case was justice served? is it a crime ?

This is the country we live in.

In a place like this comments coming out from low lives such as Ela Thana Kola, I am no Human, Fatima Ex-Muslim are nothing out of order, they can say this and more.

It’s that inability accept whats wrong as wrong is the problem. Always pointing fingers at other while conveniently ignoring ones own mistakes.

    candy-ass mutts !

Dear All: rape happends every day in Sri Lanka by who do you think? Do not you see many monks have molested innocent children’ in hundreds and why do not talk about this, rape happens by tourists in SL and do not body talk about it: this incident is cooked up by racist groups of people what happened was the boy stole some items from shop and police knows that: them owner of the shop asked boy to take it off his pocket but he did not do that : on front of his mum the owner took it out and mother felt shame and annoyed about it: she cooked a story up and turned the blame on innocent shop keeper: according this false slander she must be lashed 80 lashes for telling lies and making up slanders and stories :
What police should have done? Idiot police they do not have brain to do investigation you know in our country police have know basic qualification even 6 year grade or less what they have done is sided with false slander and supported this boy mother in her fabrication and yet, some racists and idot in this forum writes like real meeharaas: no head no brain to think but like same cows they support this cooked up stories : are you blinds or are your hearts are blocked from truth? Do not you see how can any one rape a boy in front of mother or where was she then , why could she leave a child?

Going by the same logic of burning down a place where supposedly a boy had been raped, it is high time the Buddhist clergy burns down, or deems it fit to do so, all police stations and prisons where many citizens have died, due to violence.
Even recently, there has been no identification, of the killers of 27 prisoners,in Welikada Jail.
This will ensure swift justice, which our justice system takes ages to ensure,if at all.
The Buddha did not specifically ban such practice.
He did wish compassion towards all living beings including humans.

There is no law for all Sri Lankens, Question when will the next civil war start.if minorities are attacked, i don’t think minorities will wait even though the majority of Buddhist are good people.
story: The lion came for the black cow, the white and red cow said its not our problem. Then it came for the red cow, white said not my problem. Then it came for the white cow. No cow was there to even say not my problem.(African proverb).
all have to unite to stop this lawless ness.

Going to the reports all this arson and racism is supposed to be due to the alleged squeezing of the genitals of a 7 yr old by a 50 yr old, not a case of rape. CCTV footage led to the release of the accused after 1 1/2 days as it was proven that no such incident had taken place.

Given that a similiar incident actually occurred in parliment where the genitals of a Ven Monk Omalpe Sobhitha were said to have been squeezed by Vermin Silva, should not the parliment have been burned to the ground. He was even admitted to hospital for several days after this painful episode.

We request the Ven Mahanayakes to deliver an edict on this type of offence for the benefit of the BBS.

Correction. The monk in question should be Ven. Kolonnawe Sri Sumangala Thero not ven Omalpe Sobhitha as stated.

The strong blows to his abdomen had severely bruised the area resulting in him being unable to pass urine. He is still using a catheter to pass urine. When asked whether he could identify those who attacked him, he said that although he knows who they were, he would not divulge their identities.

“I will suffer physically and it will be gone in a few days, but for what they have done they will suffer mentally. We have done nothing wrong to anyone and we did not go parliament for the prestige, power or perks. We went there for a reason – for the fulfillment of a mission and that is to form a dharmarajya,” said Ven. Sumangala Thero, adding that such goals cannot be compromised simply because they became victims of unruly persons.

The parliament incident has happened 10 years ago. The usual suspects are the bad guys. This is what a noble house of the country does, setting such good precedence, decades down the line it has been picked up general public with both hands.

Harrassing and hitting the ‘Muslim’ bogey man does bolster the racist Buddhist Sinhala cabal of the Rajapaksas. It also takes the attention of the public away from the high level corruption that is being practiced by the MR club. It takes the attention away from the utter poverty that confronts most rural Sri lankans. It takes the public attention away from the Sinhalisation of the North and the East. And if the Muslims can be provoked to rebel the Rajapaksa’s can come down on the hapless Muslims with an iron fist and once again proclaim that they are the saviours of Sri Lanka. And the Sinhala rank and file will distribute kiribath to police and the army and light crackers.

Most (free laptop and tax free car importing licence) media in Sri Lanka are complicit in building up the myth of the ‘Muslim’ bogey man. I am not surprised at the utter falsehood of ‘The Island’ article.

The problem here is we see, this type of articles on CT from Muslim, Tamils, Sinhalese writers alike.

The truth is more these writers write in this manner, more the muslims ministers are able to benefit from this writing. Under the leadership of Fawzie, there is going to be a grand scale celebration for the King for having received the title of Kalifa from Bahrain. He has requested the muslims as far as east to come and participate to improve the collection. How come these writers are not questioning the ministers who are with the government?

There was long list of blessing for Bathiyutheen for having filed a lawsuit filed against BBS. I thinks that may be civil case. But I hear that cases are going to filed against him for having taken lands. As these could be government lands, the lawsuits may be criminal as well as civil. Is this how Bathiyutheen has set up himself to BBS go after him? Is this a case that Bathiyutheen threw a stone from glasshouse? Is he going to put a larger party than Fawzie to get out of this. These corrupted ministers are dragging the innocent Muslim civilians into trouble for their wrong doing. How will be they be able to talk for civilians then?

I want to ask these writers one question. Can one of them write a guessing what will happen if one of the ministers resign from the government on one of these issues.

Without taking any side in this case, as an independent person, I wish to state that if the Police could not find any evidence of the alleged incident, if the accused was released, if the CCTV footage did not provide evidence of such crime and if they had not been tampered by any party, if the mother was keeping her eye on the child whilst he was with her in the shop, if the mother did not see such crime had taken place in the shop, “The Island” journalist should have more concrete evidence to write such a news item. What are the evidence he is having? Why shouldn’t he submit those evidence to the Police? Simply because a person is biased on some party, he should not write to create frustration in the minds of their writers. If such news item had been published by The Island, I have no doubt, that such biased report would definitely tarnish the good image of its founder, the statesman and son of the nation, late Mr. Upali Phillip Wijewardene.

That is one of the reason I never read ”The Island” is just a mouthpiece of the MaRa Regime which increasingly becoming racially motivated, spread chauvinistic Buddhist ideology to distract the mindset of ordinary Buddhist masses from daily social issues such as the price hike of daily needs to possible trade embargo for crime against humanity to stay in power for ever…..
Even MaRa very ignorantly tried to justify concocted fabrication of ”rape of a boy” when barrage of questions poured on him about minority issues one of them was mass destruction of Mosques around the country during the doomed CHOGM Summit
This was not planned by ordinary BBS thugs but by the very top of the regime namely MaRa and GoRa for another well-planned ethnic cleansing- this time Muslims!!!!!
BBS and Ravana Balaya are the SS and Brown Shirts of Adolf Hitler.

The writer has the nerve to talk about “religious police”! It is the exclusively Moslem countries such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait where those groups are a part of life, eternally haunting every innocent non-Moslem to hurt, abuse, rape, imprison, murder them. The Sinhalese should beware that these rascal masquerading like concerned citizens are counting days for Lanka to turn into a Moslem majority nation, so that the Sinhala who do not covert a massacred and all religious worship other than Islam is banned and Sharia law with its ugly tenets is imposed on the country, ushering the dark ages for millennia to come.

Beware of Jihadist men like Abdul Karim the writer who distort facts and are trying really hard to pacify the Sinhalese so that they can reproduce with dozens of children per family. They are the real terrorists!
