Losing Sri Lanka

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“A profound ignorance, boundless credulity, weak intellect, and warm imagination, are the materials, of which are made bigots, zealots, fanatics, and saints….. The saints and the populace are, in the hands of their directors, automatons, moved at pleasure.” – Baron D’holbach (Good Sense without God)

The Buddhist flag flying over the Independence Square is symbolic of the anti-Lankan state the Rajapaksas are constructing, post-war.

Mahinda Biddhist colombotelegraphWhen UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay questioned the wisdom of flying a religious flag over a national monument, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had one of his signature fits. He also claimed, mendaciously, that Ms. Pillay had objected to the DS Senanayake statue: “During her conversation with the President, she had referred to the statue of a tall well-built man and asked who he was. The President had said it was the statue of the first prime minister. Madam Pillay had said that it is not appropriate as it represents only the Sinhala nation.”[i]

The UNP, in a rare display of acumen, wrote to Ms. Pillay, asking for clarification. The UNHRC issued a statement emphasising that Ms. Pillay made no reference whatsoever to Mr. Senanayake’s statue nor demanded the removal of the Buddhist flag. She had merely “suggested it might be more inclusive to fly only the national flag, which is a symbol that unites the nation, no matter who they are or what religion they adhere to.”[ii]

Sensible words indeed; except where nation is defined as a religious community.

The Buddhist flag was created in 1885. It was an outcome of a political process which advocated resisting Colonial rule with religious (Buddhist-Sinhala) nationalism. The adherents of this political project regarded all non-Buddhists (including non-Buddhist Sinhalese) as anti-patriotic aliens and axiomatic agents of colonialism.

Religious nationalism is the antithesis of the modern, inclusive and secular nationalism. It regards religion (rather than race/country of origin) as the determinant factor in deciding one’s ‘true’ nationality. Its patria is the exclusive preserve of the ‘one true faith’, a consecrated land where non-believers/heretics can exist only on sufferance. Anagarika Dharmapala was the foremost advocate of this project in colonial Ceylon. The JHU and the BBS belong in this tradition.

This is the ‘nationalism’ espoused by the Rajapaksas. The Buddhist flag in the Independence Square symbolises the anti-secular religious ‘nation-building’ the Rajapaksas are implanting, post-war.

Familial Rule is an aberration, a throwback to an anti-democratic and monarchical past. Given the archaic nature of their agenda, it is logical for the Rajapaksas to embrace an equally retrogressive ideology which enthrones religion as the foundation of nation. Religious nationalism has another critically important use-value for the Rajapaksas. With the end of the war, the conditions which created and sustained the decades-long ethnic-over-determination of Lankan politics began to erode. Sans that distortion, Lankan politics would have returned to its normal grooves. For their familial project to take root and flourish, the Rajapaksas needed to install another distorting prism capable of diverting the focus of the Sinhala-South from livelihood and living condition issues. Given Lankan demographics, religion was the obvious choice. The deliberate attempts to ignite religious tensions are aimed at preventing the normalisation of Lankan politics by replacing the ‘racial enemy’ with an even more ubiquitous ‘religious enemy’.

Rulers have always used religion as a tool of legitimacy. Zia Ul Haq imposed Sharia Law in Pakistan. The equally pro-American Anwar Sadat enshrined Islam as the state religion and Sharia as the principal source of legislation in Egyptian Constitution. Vladimir Putin has elevated “the Russian Orthodox Church….as a quasi-state religion supplying the government with its moral force”[iii]. Religion is also a weapon of choice of electoral politicians of diverse faiths, from American Republicans to India’s BJP, from Turkey’s Erdogan to Uganda’s Museveni.

The Rajapaksas are using their own version of Sinhala-Buddhism to justify and strengthen their familial rule.

The Buddhist King

A Theravada Buddhist Lanka was Mahawamsa’s first premise, its starting point. And to gain legitimacy for this extremely anti-Buddhist notion, Mahawamsa created its own Buddha-figure. The Buddha we meet in the first pages of Mahawamsa is not Siddhartha Gautama, the Compassionate One, the teacher who exhorted his followers to use their own feelings as examples and never to inflict pain and suffering on another. The Buddha of Mahawamsa is a martial figure who uses terror and trickery to ‘drive forth’ the yakkas and ‘win Lanka for the faith’[iv]. The monks of the JHU/BBS variety are disciples of this Buddha, created by the monk Mahanama, for the purposes of another dynastic project.

The ideal ruler, according to Mahawamsa, is not Sinhala but Buddhist. He must do whatever it takes, including the killing of millions, to propagate and protect the ‘true faith’. Dutugemunu of Mahawamsa epitomises this ideal of religious warrior-king; he “had a relic put into his spear” and waged war to “bring glory to the doctrine”[v]. The Dutugemunu-Elara conflict (as depicted in the Mahawamsa) was a religious war to save Lanka from unbelievers.

The 2004 contestation between Mahinda Rajapaksa and Lakshman Kadirgarmar for premiership was also a contestation between archaic ‘religious nationalism’ and modern ‘secular nationalism’. Mr. Kadiragarmar was backed by the secular nationalist JVP while Mr. Rajapaksa was backed by the religious nationalist JHU. Mr. Rajapaksa’s victory was a turning point, in religious nationalism’s march from irrelevance to power.

The Rajapaksas need Mahawamsa-Buddhism to legitimise and justify their dynastic project. Their post-war nation-building project is not just a Sinhala-supremacist one; it is also an anti-secular, Buddhist-supremacist one. State-driven promotion of Buddhism forms the key axis of the project of Sinhalaisation implemented by the Rajapaksas in the North/parts of the East. Using the military to build temples and Buddha statues and to hold massive Wesak celebrations, in areas sans civilian Buddhists, is symbolic and symbiotic of this anti-secular approach to peace and nation building.

In a recent interview, the head-honcho of the BBS, Galagoda-Atte Gnanasara Thero admitted that the BBS has applied to be registered as a limited liability company. His future plans include creating a Buddhist International[vi]. Obviously the new ‘International’ will seek to unite Wirathu-type fanatics under one organisational-umbrella. It might even become a key component of Rajapaksa foreign policy.

Fanatics of all faiths agree that life and society should be reordered in accordance with religion, the only difference being whose religion. They oppose the secular-humanist values of the Enlightenment, pluralist-democracy and cultural-diversity. Their majoritarianism is primarily a religious one.

The manifestation of one type of religious fundamentalism encourages and fosters fanatics of every other religion, creating a vicious cycle which will lead to not just wars between religions but also wars within religions. This threatens the stability and the viability of pluralist societies. For instance, the US/UK invasion of Iraq gave rise not to an inclusive Iraqi nationalism but to murderously competing Sunni and Shia nationalisms. Iraq became a sectarian killing field because it succumbed to religious nationalism.

For the Rajapaksas, religious nationalism is an indispensable cloak and a valuable dagger. Depicting Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Buddhist warrior-king would be useful in keeping economically-suffering Sinhala masses loyal to Familial Rule.

SWRD Bandaranaike, with his Sinhala-supremacism, bequeathed a racial war to posterity. A multi-frontal religious conflict may be the most lasting of the Rajapaksa legacies.

When Morality declines in a society, the rich and powerful takes control of the resources by unfair means, lack of respect among communities; are some of the signs of an impending catastrophe. A violent temper will ignite hatred, burn respect & turn all hopes of happiness to ashes. The world suffers a lot. Not because of the violence of bad people, but because of the silence of good people.

So let’s watch on the sidelines the dismantling of a 25 hundred year old way of life block by block.

Now the world should be on the watch out for the specter of Buddhist fascism in South/South-East Asia, just like how the world is facing Islamo-fascism.

Wiratu, Gnanasara Gona and Maharajapakse clan are the leaders of Buddhist-fascism!

” When Morality declines in a society “

We have some way to go, to reach the depths attained in the West, where sexual perversion has been legislated as a ‘human right’. I doubt that you want Sri Lanka to reach such a nadir, replacing the moral code that has served us well over the millenia.

Sri Lanka is dated as one of the 23 nations use Sextual violence and rape against women as a tool of fighting army. These countries use this to make men associated with the women to kneel down. Last year Time portrayed lanka as a Buddhist extremist country. Last week Buddhist monks falsely accused a man molesting a child, went to shop. It is accused, monks children in Lanka are molested in Lanka. I think Lankans should be allowed free sex(perversion) to curb these extreme violent crime. That is vent to these excessive feeling Mahavamsa Modaya community who are force to dream having ses with lion.

Rape was never used as a weapon by the Sri Lankan army, mainly because of cultural values. However, all armies and terrorist groups in war situations do commit crimes to varying degrees including rape of women and children. There were even stories that the LTTE was supplying sex slaves to some NGOs who supported them. Rape is also a rampant problem in Western nations. Compared to them the incidents in the Sri Lankan army is minute, but even one rape by anyone must be thoroughly condemned and punished. The point is there are many Sri Lankans grand standing to join the West to point accusing fingers at the Sri Lankan army but silent about such crimes committed by terrorist groups and in wars involving the very nations that make these accusations. I will be surprised if the 23 nations named, exclude the leading NATO nations as well as our neighbour India.

for Kali Mud Head every one who talk sense is sinkalam.
Whether it’s singalan or tamulan when one talks rubbish it’s rubbish.

This is how his Sun goat was, everyone else was wrong only he was right. That kind of attitude did not take him far.

Kali Mud is no different, talking about genocide.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it” ~ Dr. Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s minister of propaganda.

Above is quite true for most diaspora tamils. Who have no clue of what went on in north and east past 20+ years as they were busy with their asylum claims. Ant right minded person will accept people did die, rape did take place this is not from one side alone it happened from all sides.

Do we have a just rule ? nowhere close to that! Are we having ideal governance ? not at all.

But some tamils pretends that their struggle is saintly, which is just not right.

Now Kali mud will call me names, which he thinks as such a big achievement, what he does not know is that he belongs to company of dullards.

Sri lanka reached such a nadir only since the Rajapaksas assumed power. Sri lanka has become infamous for rapes, child sex abuse, and abuse of women. The Rajapaksas have replaced the 25000 year old moral code with Mahinda Chintana and you can see the result of it splashed over all the newspapers daily. Open your eyes and ears, pal!

Tisaranee, I am beginning to agree literally, with the above statement, since I have heard people declare that the Buddha was born in Lanka.

Maybe there WAS another, (not Prince Siddhartha}, who WAS born in Lanka, and proclaimed himself ‘The Buddha’ and became…..

“The Buddha of Mahawamsa, a martial figure who uses terror and trickery to ‘drive forth’ the yakkas and ‘win Lanka for the faith’”

This seems to be the ‘Buddha’ that the Ruling Clan follows, because as Sharmini Serasinghe posted earlier, the Gautama Buddha’s Dhamma is definitely not the Teaching followed by them.

The Hindu Vedas tell us that Lord Indra wields the thunderbolt and conquers darkness. He brings us light and life, gives us vigour and freshness. Heaven bows before him and the earth trembles at his approach “Yes, when I send thunder and lightning” says Indra “then you believe, in me.” – copied from a comment.

Lord Indra did not become a “martial figure” for fighting evil did he? The fight with the “Yakkas” is a fight over good over evil. It must be read as evil (yakka) of habitually feudal tribes were conquered for peace to dawn. The “Yakka” is a verb not a noun.

I suggest until you develop an ability to read into nuances of historical narratives you stop reading the Mahavamsa altogether.

    Dear Tisaranee,

The Buddhist flag was created in 1885. It was an outcome of a political process which advocated resisting Colonial rule with religious (Buddhist-Sinhala) nationalism. The adherents of this political project regarded all non-Buddhists (including non-Buddhist Sinhalese) as anti-patriotic aliens and axiomatic agents of colonialism.

As a Sri Lankan we have to agree that the non-Buddhists of that period were pawns of the Colonial rule who were rewarded for being unpatriotic.

In the countries of the West following Christianism the rule is live by the god or in god we trust or something to do with the God.

We have 75 to 80 % Buddhists still remaining who accepted the faith brought in by Mihindu from India with peace. The balance consists of Christian decendants from Buddhists forced and coerced by wealth gun by Portugese, Dutch, English and Arabs. None by peace but force.

You being a Christian descendant by birth should not look down on the majority Buddhists as extremists, radicals, whatever you select to call them as.

The present rulers are using the Buddhist card to stay in power but don’t blame the Buddhists in general for your fight against the government.

It is sad to see our own brothers and sisters who have taken on the Christian and Islamic faiths keep on writing of wrong by the Buddhists as extremists when Sinhala Buddhists too are suffering under these administrators. If you look around you will see who the exremists are the Muslim brotherhood, Christian evangelists who are going to heaven while we non believers in the supreme god burn in hell.

You are a good writer. Fight your battles with greedy and corrupt leaders. Leave the religions out. In any Christian country you cannot be a leader without being a Christian or a Muslim in a muslim country. Obama was criticised for being of muslim lineage.

In Sri Lanka where Buddhists and Sinhalese are the majority and the only country for us, please don’t preach multi reilgous, multi nationalism and see your own people the Sinhalese if you are one of them go into extinct.

We too have to take a stand.

You are simply a deluded bigot! You have eloquently demonstrated here what the fascist Buddhism in Sri Lanka is all about. In a nutshell, there is no difference between the likes of you and the equally deluded Taliban!

yeah, doesnt he sound exactly like taliban? I think he is going to kidnap school girls now.

wait who did that? Taliban, Boko Haram and only LTTE.
        Would he also do that?

      SL Buddhist,
About 2300 years back, If people in Lanka had courage to give up their traditional beliefs and relegion , and accept new foreign religion(Buddhism) , then why can’t they do the same 200 years back giving up Buddhism and accepting Christianity or Islam? What is wrong with that?
Historical stories saying Budhhism was introduced peacefully were stories written by Bhudhhist Monks…may be true or lies..

      Sri Lankan Buddhist:
You should consider getting your name when next a mental institution is giving our doctorates. After all, you certainly qualify to join Vermin Silva with that qualification judging by the nonsense you write.

Sri Lanka was built on Buddhist culture and traditions, If there is no Buddhism, there is no country known as Sri Lanka. Do not play games with the identity, symbols and traditions of one of the greatest nation on Earth; Sri Lanka.

True Sri Lankan, Sinhala speaking Demela

“Sri Lanka was built on Buddhist culture and traditions,”

No, it was built on our ancestral land.

What is your Buddhist culture and traditions?

“If there is no Buddhism, there is no country known as Sri Lanka.”

There is no Buddhism in this country whatever you practice its called Sinhala/Buddism, a narrowly defined parochial political system of belief. If the country is not known as Sri Lanka it is good for the island and good for the people.

“Do not play games with the identity, symbols and traditions of one of the greatest nation on Earth;”

You can have your identity, symbols and traditions, we don’t need them take all of them back to your ancestral home India, Bihar, Bengal or Tamilnadu.

      “greatest nation on Earth”, why?

We should coin new term that does not contain a word buddhism to describe racist elemnents of srilanka , buddhism is the religion of truth, peace and progress. I feel offended when reading the mention of “buddhism”

        Should it be “sinhaleeism”

Sri Lankan Buddhist, Sinhala speaking Demela,

“The present rulers are using the Buddhist card to stay in power but don’t blame the Buddhists in general for your fight against the government.”

Then the people mainly the Sinhala/Buddhists must be a very very stupid lot indeed for they are the ones who elect their representatives, opposition, and president, form the government, man the bureaucracy, armed forces, judiciary, ……. run the state and coerce the people.

Don’t forget Sinhala/Buddhist monks are supposed to be guiding the political process. Even Asgriya prelate urges the most stupidest of all politician not to leave government when he recently met with him.

“In Sri Lanka where Buddhists and Sinhalese are the majority and the only country for us,”

You have your mother country in Bihar, Bengal and Tamilnadu to fall back to.

Remember this is not your island by right. You are only a guest here as long as you share the land, resources and space, heritage too. Otherwise pack your bags and go back to Tamilnadu.

MR once said Sri Lanka is the little sister to India.

Even your High Commissioner to India said ” that Sinhalese have their origins in most of the northern states of India”.

    April 1, 2013

    The Indian Express.

If you don’t like this island, please go back to your ancestral land where your long lost cousin Lalu Prasad Yadav is ready and willing to help you.

As true Buddhists, we should not criticize others, since Buddhism

“As true Buddhists, we should not criticize others, since Buddhism as philosophy, teaches us the truth of life & to extend loving kindness to everyone.”

This is applicable only to those who follow Buddha’s teaching not those who believe in Sinhala/Buddhism.

Where did you learn such crap? We SHOULD criticize others but we should ensure the time, place, depth of criticism, choice of words etc is appropriate and that out intention is to help rather than hurt.

Tisaranee: This time you have picked up an “explosive” subject to criticize MR. This will definitely receive the “hidden” appreciation of the President and perhaps you would have already received a “Duty Free Car Permit”.

The people of Sri Lanka will now start questioning: “What the hell is this? Are we to consult and get directives from UN and its affiliated agencies and those “Big Wigs” who manage the affairs therein as to what and where to hoist a flag? Also what type/size of commemorative statutes we should built and where those are to be put up?”

Now MR will relay this story well coined by you to the people of Sri Lanka and you will see the results he reaps from it. Are you accommodated well in the “back rooms” of Temple Trees. Please carry on, and MR will love you more and more and REWARD you very handsomely.

    Ela,

I thought of posting below when it’s still hot due to 2 reasons 1st and foremost it’s for bit of fun, secondly for you to ponder.

See in below 2 post from you there are ‘2’ “Dings” probably 1 from you and in total ’53’ “Dongs”

What do you think the message is ? to me it seems even the most die hard communal minded opinion makers have not voted for you (not because they don’t like what you write they love it but they don’t care to take time to give u a vote as they are selfish),In summary you received a single “Ding” vote.

If this is me I would do one of the below

Will never ever post a single post in CT or anywhere in the WWW

    or

will make an effort to think rationally and look at things in much more open minded perspective and control my urge to post derogatory and meaningless posts.

which option will u opt to ? maybe a smarter one than my 2 options ?
(believe me contrary my comment on you I think you are a smarter person than most around here)

I would like to thank Ela for giving us bit of fun along the way and for all those who voted “Dong”

I would urge everyone to take 2 seconds and vote “Ding” for “edited out” comments (which is green on the right side that’s info for those who are color blind)

As is almost always the case, TG has produced another gem of an article disclosing the hidden intricacies of the Rajapaksha schemes and gimmickry. Her writings are as sharp as a razor blade and cuts deep into Rajapaksha myths and wheeler dealings lay bare the entrails of familial hegemony.

” I have a good rapport with the President. I get along well with him,He can’t give any concession to the TNA, because the Opposition will use any concessions against the Government to topple it”.

This is what our Vellala CM in the North told the reporter from ” Ceylon Today”.. a major rag.in Colombo.

Is Ms T interested in helping the CM to win over the Opposition and allow the the TNA to win what ever they want?

Or is she with the Opposition to topple the Govt?.

Obviously she is on the latter, together with the other Sinhala Buddhist bashers as well as the Diaspora PM. Cameron Harper Pillai troika and its supporters and their mouth pieces who often join Ms T here.

Inhabitants in Srilanka are doing quite well, even in the former LTTE territory given the fact that they were cut off from civilization for three decades.

By the time the next Prez elwction comes , our GDP per capita would be around USD 5000.

UN permanent rep in Colombo is full of praise for our heath services, and nutrition level.

A German Business Federation says Srilanka is better place to invest than India.

Thais are building boutique hotels even in Galle and Kandy.

TATA group has recently announced a USD 400 Million Housing and Commercial development in Slave Island.

On the other hand 485 well off and well connected Western Citizens lost their rights to visit Srilanka for ever.

They won’t be able to pray in Nalloor or even Mannar with our Bishop there.

The Opposition has become so impotent that even our Colombo Intelligentsia mouth piece Dr Dayan reckons the UNP is just a NGO now.

Keep up the good work Ms T….

Crimea joined Russia for the same grievances as Tanils have today, Russian language was sidelined and the west Ukranian language and culture were thrust on Russiasn. The Cozachs of west Ukraine were western stooges and even supported Hitler during the war, This is similar to Sinhalese supporting China whereas Tamils have ties with India as Crimea is tied to Russia
