Secretary of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (‘Majority Group’), Lal Wijenayake told Colombo Telegraph that neither he nor the party was aware that UNP National List MP and member of the group Jayampathy Wickramaratne had sold his duty free car permit.

Wijenayake said that he first got to know of this sale through the Colombo Telegraph and added that no one in the Politburo has so far raised the issue.
While the duty free car permit was a devise introduced to facilitate greater involvement of MPs with their respective electorates, many parliamentarians have sold their permits and thereby secured gains in the region of Rs 25 million.
Wijenayake told Colombo Telegraph that the Right to Information Act would be invoked if necessary to get to the bottom of the allegation. (By Renuka Jayasinghe)

A very idea of a permit for a duty-free vehicle for MPs is flawed. If one could reach the electorate on his own for campaigning, what is preventing him/her from doing so once elected. For what else is an MP paid.

What is disgusting and distasteful to many and sundry is the deafening silence of President downwards in the Government on these serious allegations of corruption
in almost every sphere both domestic and foreign and they are still hell bent on coming back to power and almost all Govt. and Party politics are aimed and directed towards that end. Their one and only or the predominant promise and undertaking is to give the first and foremost place to promote and foster Buddhism. My candid opinion is Govt. should not dabble with any Religion but allow the Prelates of different Religions to lead their flocks according to their beliefs and teachings. If all politicians conduct themselves according to their religious tenets and if the respective Prelates or the clergy could discipline the people’s representatives Govt. need not worry about protecting any Religion, but may assist them financially proportionately. I presume the four Great Religious groups maintain audited accounts. If the Govt. is truly dedicated to protect the great precepts of Lord Buddha
they must set an example to the people by their honesty and good conduct. This is highly questionable.I refrain from quoting examples, people are aware and they know who is who. We often hear politicians making official and public comments as if they are born again. In short most of our politicians are whited sepulchres, even if you immersed them in Diyawannawa umpteen number of times they cannot be cleansed.
