Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa today claimed that several foreign funded NGOs were behind the arrest of his second son, Yoshitha, along with several others.

In a statement issued to commemorate the national independence day of Sri Lanka that falls tomorrow, Rajapaksa said; “It was reported in the press that the leaders of several foreign funded NGOs had met leaders of the present government and insisted on the arrest of members of my government on corruption charges before the 4th of February this year. It is not surprising that such agents of foreign powers would see some symbolic value in jailing members of a government that won the war against terrorism before Independence Day. My son Yoshitha, my Press Secretary Rohan Welivita, Nishantha Ranatunga and two directors of the CSN TV Channel Ravinath Fernando and Kavishan Dissanayake have been arrested under an omnibus provision in the Criminal Procedure Code enabling the police to arrest individuals to conduct investigations.”
He further noted that as Sri Lanka marks the 68th year of independence from foreign powers, “I wish to pledge before the people of Sri Lanka that even if my entire family and I myself am imprisoned, I will not deviate from the path of reasserting our national independence, ensuring the territorial integrity of our motherland, restarting the stalled process of economic development and re-establishing our national self respect.”
While elaborating on the war that was won in May 2009 against the separatists, Rajapaksa noted that due to the actions of certain conspiratorial forces, even this respite was short-lived.
“Since 8 January 2015, we are once again being used by foreign powers for their purposes. The separatists who could not achieve their aims after nearly four decades of terrorism, now hope to achieve their aim with the help of these foreign powers. Since last year there has been an unending procession of foreign dignitaries visiting their latest ‘conquest’. Due to the influence of these foreign powers, dangerous LTTE detainees have been released and members of the armed forces have been arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. Furthermore, plans are afoot to prosecute our war heroes for war crimes,” he said in the statement.

OK let it be so. But it was no other than Mahinda Rajapakse who paid glorious tribute to the Sri Lankan judiciary as the ‘best in the world’. So why does he have to worry. He is in good hands, if really Yoshitha is innocent he will be freed. We do not want any innocent person to suffer, whoever it might be and that includes Mahinda Rajapakse’s son. But if he is proven guilty am sorry he has to face the consequences as any citizen.
I know the circumstances Mahinda’s son got involved if he did. It is the power that corrupted him. He and his family lived in a false sense of security and which lured them to commit serious offences. Had if they/he been an ordinary citizen they would not have dared to commit the offences fearing the law and all would have been decent people.
This could happen to anyone enjoying power and am afraid all presidents and their children face this risk being lured to corruption and crime without them realizing it and when they do know it is far too late. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. This one reason powers should be devolved and never kept under a single person. We are all humans and we all are subjected human fallacy, and it is only after stepping down we come to know how much we have abused power and have to face the consequences. May be the President has some immunity, but other family members do not have any protection and they have to face the full force of the law.
This behavior should provide some insight to the Government to think of ways and means of protecting the President and their families from inadvertently being lured into ‘crime’. I shall tell this temptation is not limited to only Mahinda’s children but to all Head of state’s children. Actually in this sense I feel sorry for Yoshitha, he was lured into crime which in other circumstances had if he was ordinary citizen and not a child of a president he would never have committed any such deeds.
So this again Government should take proactive steps to forewarn the family of the president and also curtail the temptation of abusing power. Powers should properly structured. President or any politician should not have powers to directly order officers. Orders should cascade properly through the respective heads of units and not directly to officer of their choice. Then all checks and balances are maintained, no politician can be tempted, and so no abuse can take place and be complained.
I feel if Yoshtitha is found guilty after a fair trial, Mahinda could make use of ‘being lured to crime’ as his explanation to show leniency towards his son. But this can’t go on with all the future President’s children! It is up to the Government to take steps, the head of state and family is protected of being lured into abusing power and so breaking the law.

The main reason for Yoshitha to be in that place today, is because, you and your wife’s negligence. If you had taught him to be descent, polite, and to be a trust worthy honest citizen, then he would have never fallen into this tragedy. There are many more off springs of the elite class, even today, still behaving as if the law is never meant for them. When they get in trouble at a later date, their parents will blame everybody else but them.

Those of you who blindly praise Sarath Fonseka should take a step or two back and think if an honorable military commander should have behaved the way he has in the last year?
He demanded and got Field Marshall status because he knew it made his position unique and unchangeable, no matter who was in power. Ranil and Maithri made a choice to give him what he wanted so they could put him aside.
He contested along with his wife the last general elections and got wiped out. Has given speeches from all corners of his mouth ever since, and now had decided to creep into parliament through the back door.
This begs the question…what is the UNP planning..I said planning not thinking because there is a strategy involved in this decision if it comes true in the next few days.
As for giving Sarath Fornseka’s wife a cushy job…is’nt this what he criticised from election stages? Nepotism. What experience does Mrs. Fonseka have other than being Mrs. Fonseka.
We have to learn to ask tough questions not only from those with whom we disagree but also from those we support. That is what freedom of speech and of the press is all about. It is not about insulting everyone, all the time.

Sinhala people who migrated abroad for economic reasons and obtained citizenship in Foreign countries can’t even open a LKR Rupee account in a local bank.
Yahpalana Boss Batalanada Ranil allows Foreigners to park USD 1..5 Billion in Srilanka , without even knowing their names and addresses. let alone identity checks and the legality of the funds.
And pay them 2.5 % , when US & EU has zero % and Japan charges the investors to park the money.
That is the sort of standards we have now in our country when the other Nations check even small transactions in or out for security to guard against Terrorists.
In contrast Batalanada Ranil and Bodhi Sira use our Tiger beating anti Terrorism Laws to punish the children of the leaders of the political opposition, and young business minded Sinhala Buddhists with education and knowledge , who served the country at great risks to their lives from Tamil Terrorists..
The whole Military Intelligence Unit of the Srilankan Armed forces who were the key to defeat Pirahaparan and his murderer outfit are now behind bars on the orders of Batalanda Ranil.
It is a pity that our inhabitants have forgotten that Batalanda Ranil wiped out the Military Intelligence Unit even in the 90s when he was the PM for a short time.

You might take credit for the war won with so much of sacrifice of children of other parents while your son only had photo opps and was packed of safe in the name of higher training which now is questioned as he was not qualified.
