Mangala Goes To CID To Absolve Media ‘Hit Man’ Of Involvement In Ekneligoda Disappearance

Minister of Finance and Mass Media Mangala Samaraweera has moved to have the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) investigate the alleged involvement of his Personal Secretary (Media) Ruwan Ferdinandez in the disappearance of Prageeth Ekneligoda.

Samaraweera’s request to the CID follows a suggestion by Ferdinandez who demanded that the allegation be investigated and that he be temporarily relieved of his duties until such investigation is concluded.

Ferdinandez wrote to Samaraweera after the website Abrighterfuture.lk quoted what Ferdinandez refers to as a ‘gossip site,’ namely www.lankaenews.com claiming that a certain ‘Ruwan’ was associated with the disappearance of Ekneligoda.

As Colombo Telegraph has reported, Ekneligoda was abducted twice, the first time on August 27, 2009 and the second time on January 24, 2010.

Prior to the second abduction, the CID had questioned Ekneligoda’s friend Kelly Senanayake, owner of Navamaga Printers, to ascertain the identity of a handwriting sample. Senanayake confirming that he had indeed been summoned to the fourth floor of the CID, said that the investigating officers had inquired if he printed the document to which Senanayake had replied in the negative. He had however confirmed that the handwriting on this document (which was a photocopy and not an original) was Ekneligoda’s.

The said document was one that Ekneligoda had written to support Sarath Fonseka’s election campaign and took the form of a scurrilous pamphlet (‘kaelae paththaraya’). It covered 23 persons including President Mahinda Rajapaksa, his siblings Basil, Gotabaya and Chamal, his son Namal, nephew Sasheendra and ministers Wimal Weerawansa and Dulles Allahapperuma.

The document had been typeset. Ekneligoda had checked the proofs and his handwriting was visible in some sections of the document.

Lankaenews editor Sandaruwan Senadheera in an interview with a UK based journalist named Kalpa Palliyaguru has stated that such a document was in fact written by Ekneligoda and had been handed over to Samaraweera’s office in Rajagiriya. Samaraweera at the time was backing Fonseka. The document was received by Ferdinandez, according to Senadheera.

Senadheera reveals that Senanayake had told him about being questioned by the CID. He supports his suspicion of Ferdinandez’s involvement by pointing out that Ferdinandez’s name was on a CID ‘paying list’. Ferdinandez, upon being asked about this, had said he had no idea how his name happened to be on it, Senadheera said. He also pointed out that it was Ferdinandez who had, sometime later, began to post in various websites allegedly handled by him (Ferdinandez) that Ekneligoda was an LTTE agent. This, Senadheera says, seems to confirm that Ferdinandis was in fact a paid agent at one time.

Senadheera believes that Ekeneligoda’s disappearance was a result of the said document getting into the hands of the CID in January 2010.

According to Senadheera, the CID has since ruled out that Ekneligoda had any connection with the LTTE.

None of this, however, sheds any light on the first abduction which took place long before Fonseka had announced his candidacy.

These all are stories to divert the attention from the govt corruption, ministers destructing the country. Govt is bypassing the surveyor dept and giving a contract to survey Sri lanka or only the Trincomalee area, Their focus is surveying around the harbour. The company is asking $ 154 million for the project. the govt has to send Rs 400 million every year in order to maintain what ever the company wants. IMF has approved $ 254 million, probably will go to this. On the other hand, It looks the GOSL is bankrupt and because parliament has modified the Appropriation act increased the limit of debt that the govt can hold. Even though the GOSL is getting loans non stop, govt has not done any projects , has increased taxes, it says it will recover only the bond scam money. RANIL said, he is getting 1.1 billion from China for the harbour. but, He got a cheque only for some $ 200 odd (less than 300) million. So, Ranil is continuing his irresponsible lies. I heard Rajitha Senarathne has lost his mouse and is looking for a logitech mouse.

Minister of Mass Media Mangala Samaraweera,

We all know who the criminals and crooks are.Why beat about the bush in this drama,

When can we see action? “Yahapalanaya” came to power on January 9, 2015.

Why are the crooks and criminals still at large?

There is widespread belief that Prageeth Ekneligoda was abducted, tortured, killed and his body disposed of by the security forces for exposing the import and use of chemical weapons in the last stage of the war. This needs to be investigated by an international panel as part of war crime.

Grandpa Gnana, are you a doc or medicine or some other subject? Whatever it is, one thing is for sure. You have a serious mental issue. Blaming security forces! For what? Giving all Sri Lankans a peaceful land. A self exile creature like you will never want to absorb that truth!

        Max,
Not that I agree with the thoughts of Dr GS, I wonder what the abduction and possible murder of Ekneligoda has to do with giving us a peaceful land?

        Max the moron

So if the one of member of security forces in his private capacity abducts and kills one of your loved ones then that is ok by you because he was one of those who gave all Sri Lankans (certainly except you) a peaceful land?

You should have a taste of your own medicine, and so I hope that certainly happens and will celebrate the day you or your family member(s) suffer irrecoverable damage by one of those connected with the forces.

Who is involved in what is a matter for the investigators to start with. In politics there are strange twists and turns. This move too could be on same lines satisfying a big game of strategy. But that is immaterial. The stand the writer took to step down until his name is cleared must be commended.

american govt is placing an anti corruption Legal Advisor in Sri lanka. they do not have done that in any other countries. American has promised, as per the news report, tha tin 2016. So, it is possible that the bond scam had some backing from a foreign country too. Anyway, I heard, that Ranil has asked some help saying, “if not we would be in trouble”.Probably, Legal adviser is preparing for inevitable repercussions of the bond scam.

I heard there will be about 40 people to be arrested. Because of the involvement of a foreign govt, probably, there won’t be any successful solution to the Bond Scam corruption.

It is high time Sri Lanka had an international war crimes tribunal to investigate the killings of journalists, human right activists, political opponents as well as over 40,000 innocent Tamil civilians by GoTa, MaRa, Namal, Basil, and their cohorts let along the raping of young girls by MaRa during Premadasa violence.

Rajapakse clan were not the only ones that Eknaligoda slung mud at.
On one hand if Rajapakses were to eliminate all those who slung mud at them the list of those who are disappeared would be a quite a long one.
And on the other hand some one else that was ridiculed by Eknaligoda would have had a golden opportunity to get Eknaligoda eliminated and credit the crime on Rajapakse account.
That is probably what has happened and that’s why the investigations are going nowhere.
