Further reflecting the Rajapaksa regime’s disinterest to genuinely promote reconciliation in the conflict affected Northern Province, the President has granted a service extension to the Northern province Governor G. A. Chandrasiri whose tenure was due to end today.
Although the TNA had on several occasions repeatedly requested for a non-military person to be appointed as the Governor of the Northern Province once Chandrasiri’s tenure ends the President had granted a service extension today, for six more months.
It is an infamous fact that the TNA and Chandrasiri, who was a former General of the Sri Lanka Army have been at loggerheads over matters pertaining to the Northern Province administration. Northern Province Chief Minister C. V. Wigneswaran has been particularly critical of his policy decisions and has openly stated that Chandrasiri has actively undermined measures that would help bring normalcy to war affected communities of the Northern Province.
Chandrasiri has been holding the position of the Northern Province Governor since the end of war. He was appointed as the Commander of Security Forces Headquarters in Jaffna during the final phases of the conflict and in the post-conflict period he has been in charge of the resettlement process as well.
