Mobilising To Meet The Menace Of A Post-Election Dictatorship; Advent Of People’s Power: A New Dynamic

By Kumar David

Prof. Kumar David

My theme today is the significance of the national People’s Power (PP) movement launched on 18 August at a rally where it also named a presidential candidate. But first let me entertain you to a numbers game. In January 2015 MS polled 51.3% to MR’s 47.7% and 1% to Others. The JVP in 2015 (parliamentary) and 2018 (LG) polled about 6.5% (see charts). It did not contest the presidency in Jan 2015 and worked flat out for MS. Had it contested and had it taken away just 1.3% of MS’s vote, the decision would have gone to a second-preference count. A close call; but it gets more interesting. Had it pulled 3.6% of MS’s vote (recall that its usual poll is 6.5%) Sirisena’s first-preferences would have fallen below Mahinda’s. Wow! Furthermore, had many JVPers abstained from marking MS as their second-preference, the party is notorious for its derring-do sectarianism, Percy Mahinda Rajapaksa would have been elected President of Sri Lanka for a third-term. Think of it!

Your Sunday morning arithmetic lesson is not over. It is pretty certain the count will go to second-preferences this time. The JVP has gained popularity and the PP alliance may, for arguments sake, poll 10%. This means that either Gota or the DNFer, to clear 50%, will have to press the rival below 40%. That’s not possible; the gap is too wide.  Depending on how the 90% splits (47:43, 46:44 45:45) both will then hang on every hair of a PP beard. Since PP is strongly anti-Gota the portion that does not abstain from marking a second-preference will decide the outcome. Are you still with me? A+ for arithmetic.

Ok have a sip of Sunday morning coffee, let’s move on to my substantive topic; the post presidential election period could be dangerous for democracy. I mean the possible election of Gota as president, but I do not consider a Sajith presidency as free of apprehension. The difference is that Sajith does not have marauding racists, extremist monks and military brass, all hounds of hell baying to be unleashed, waiting in the wings. Sajith like Gota is bereft of an economic plan, he is empty headed on devolution and minority issues and is opposed of the 20-th Amendment (repeal executive presidency). In sum, since he will be unable to move beyond limits that have crippled this government, a Sajith regime too will, over time, descend to the use of state power in autocratic ways. But I grant, imminent peril and future threats are not the same.

General Election 2015: Chart by TK Research & Solutions

Therefore, there are two important concerns: To foil a Gota presidency, and to prepare and mobilise mass and social movements to fight autocratic trends whoever becomes president. Although this is the chronological order in which these tasks will be posed the second is long-term and more significant. To reach these twin objectives it is necessary to strengthen the 30 organisation People’s Power alliance, the third-force that is now coalescing. More important is what PP does. Sure, the JVP would like to promote the candidacy of Anura Kumara; the other 29 while pulling their weight in this respect must also have wider objectives. Programmes and strategies have to be evolved via discourses where no one dominates others. They have to be finalised urgently and publicised soon.

I marched in the United Left 1963 May Day demo and was at its Galle Face meeting chaired by NM, Dr Wicks and Philip. I was also on a side-stage with a good overview at Sunday’s (18th) PP Galle Face rally. PP drew about 150,000 and was comparable in size to the 1963 May Day. More than 40 years after the 1977 election debacle destroyed the left, a radical left-democratic alternative has been born. It is an alliance of 30 self-thinking entities committed to mobilising a people’s movement untainted by corruption as an alternative to the two big parties. Things are on the move; a framework has been erected and a programme outlined. Globally this is the age of the third-force, the day of the “alternative”. PP now enters the stage of fleshing out its programme and coordinating strategies.

Local Government Election February 2018 (JVP 6.5%)

Last week’s column promoted a concerted effort to vote first-preference for the third-option and second-preference against Gota – that is in favour of the DNF candidate, be it Ranil, Sajith or Karu. It elicited hot reactions both for and against from anti and pro Gota camps. Some saw it as an excellent way of expressing dissent with the racist-reactionary Rajapaksas and failed yahapalana and promoting a third option while at the same time foiling Gota. Others feared it would be self-defeating.

I don’t get the point of those who fear that some who vote PP may neglect to cast a second-preference anti-Gota vote. It is true that there are world-is-their-oyster sectarians who may give first-preference to PP and refrain from a second choice, but such people are not going to vote for a DNFer, come what may. So, the DNF loses nothing by my first-for-PP, second-against-Gota tactic. It may actually gain.  Cohorts of people are fed-up with both main parties. A refrain I often hear is “I’m not going to vote for either bastard”. These are PP targets; potential third-force voters. It is similar all over the world; France, Italy, UK and paradoxically even the Trump Base is fed-up with the rotten system. Support for an alternative comes from all who have lost faith in the “game”. It is global and is visible in Lanka (“ung okoma horu”). My conjecture that PP will poll high is influenced by this. Some may never go to the polls but for PP; they may bestow a scornful second-preference on the DNF. There is no reason to fear that my proposal will weaken an anti-Gota aggregation. The opposite is likely.

An important reason for forging PP is to sponsor a radical left-democratic identity; the gains made since 8 January 2015 are under threat. If MR had not been defeated, we would be living with no presidential term limits – a practise dictators long for. White-vans plying their trade, assassinations galore, political opponents careful not to sleep in the same place two nights in a row, Tamils and Muslims terrorised by the State, no oversight committees and commissions, Chief Justices treated like road-tarts, UPFA MPs like lick-spittle stooges; I could go on for another page. This has all ended, but the peril is that it may all return if Gota rides again. This is why foiling Gota is crucial.

Liberals, leftists and civil society took the lead in the January 8 victory and in promoting democratic, legislative and constitutional advances. That road achieved much, but it has reached its limit. Where further can an alliance with the UNP go? In economic orientation, devolution of power, constitutional advance and anti-corruption measures, it has reached its bound. It is time to make a conceptual and practical leap and strike out anew. Trade Unions, NGOs, the ULF, NSSP, post-Shan Left and all manner of progressives sang the praises of left unity all these years. Now when the real thing arrives in a practical form, warts and all, some who sang this chorus cringe in an un-Leninist funk. One thing about the great Bolshevik was his prescience and boldness of decisions making when circumstances demanded it. Remember the April Thesis?

In the Gota movement we have the convergence of a notorious personal authoritarian, a racially fired-up petty-bourgeoisie, Moor hating-and-baiting bigots in saffron robes, business lobbies with narrow nationalist and personal agendas, and retired and serving military brass smarting to stamp their cache on state-power. A dangerous nexus whose progression entails reversal of democratic gains made since January 2015. But my ‘voting logic’ also applies to eventual Gota voters who want to register dissent before marking support for their champion. It is in the interests of everyone to register dissent with the SLPP/SLFP and the UNP before giving an undeserved extension of life to either. Who will say “Don’t give both scoundrels a well-deserved thrashing?” No one! It would be a mistake, whether you are SLPP/SLFP or UNP, not to show dissent before you choose your side.

Whichever side you are at this moment, look 5-10 years ahead; we must get back to basics and renew uncorrupted roots. The maturing of People’s Power will be conditioned by the impact of all 30 members (for now, more soon) on and within it. PP is now at a crucial stage detailing development strategy, democracy, devolution and unification of communities and decency in public life. This is the most important element in the emerging dynamic; the forging of a movement for significant social change. Let’s say what needs to be done and what can be done; people don’t expect the moon. Let’s get on with the job!

Title is from another country. There is no peoples’ power. It is the power of International community and PIVOT Asia Program that runs everything. All the parliamentarians are supporters, whether willingly or not, of that. Mahinda Rajapakse, what they say, USA was the most supportive to him. Matirhpala Sirisena he himself lose because he is screwing up things (Probably not). Ranil also thinks he may lose his electoral DISTRICT . JVP also has accusations including AKD getting Bond Scam money inside a Kotte house. Anyway, JVP, even if corrupt not as corrupt as three other parties that are SLPP, UNP and SLFP. TNA and Muslims are not saints. They are also in the game of building their accounts, buying lands. Ranil says TNA say they will do anything when I say I am going to bring the Delimitation report. Very reliable information source says TNA is willing even to go with SLPP/SLFP. Wigneswaran for sure knows Sumanthrian won’t get the TNA leadership.
Completely new third alternative concept is not a foregone conclusion. SLPP had talked to PENTHOUSE RAVI is some other news. Raajitha Senarathne saved Vidura from a woman – scandle. There is a possibility that is boiling just behind and may come out. Navin dissanayake had attended SAJITH’s meeting with Raajitha and Mangala to support Karu, his uncle. Karu Jayasuriya never thought of coming except some one is pushing from behind to come out. Now he is pushed out. So, Karu is mad and he thinks of some how coming. Certain actions Karu doing are not his work. He just sings the letter “He just say is this also for me to sign”. Karu is worried about his Position in the next govt.

30 organisations ? how many of them actually have any members ? 30 organizations with maybe 100 people combined altogether. That’s all PP got. Ranil’s puppet Anura can fill the galle face as many times as he wants but he won’t receive more than 2 lakh votes in an election.

      Andare ,

Anura ,Sunil ,Bimal annd Vijitha , all have their REAL Maths
passes . They did their maths before getting into the ring .
They also have a higher marks in FAILS ! Anura’s win will be
a certificate that SRILANKANS HAVE MATURED AND ARE
SEEKING CHANGE ! Just try to ask yourself this simple
question . What happened to the much publicised talk of that
HOSPITAL WASTES that was dumped at Colombo port ? And
compare that with Easter Sunday ? One family’s dashing
come-back challenge despite dozens of court challenges ?
Ask Mahinda , Ranil and Sajith , we agree or not , we want or
not , THEY KNOW THE SUPPLY AND DEMAND ! People have
heavily invested on SELFISHNESS . Ask any fifth grade kid ,
what he wants out of life ! Non would say ” I want to be IN
AGRICULTURE ! Non would want to study fishing ! None would
want to be a carpenter or a Mason ! But they all want to live in
well furnished good houses ! Andare , I think I made it easy

    “Chief Justices treated like road-tarts.”

That is a very picturesque phrase and reflects reality in this land like no other!

Please sirs, not ‘tarts’ sex workers you meant. Males are the predominant clients. Could we give a name for them? Sex workers do an honest job to feed hungry mouths. No pun intended.
Chief Justices and Justices open themselves to misuse / abuse.Quite different.

What is wrong with Dr Nanthasena becoming the next president of SL?

According to media, he is a vegetarian, teetotaler, doesn’t own a house or any real estates, doesn’t have any bank accounts and he daily meditates many hours. Even his office room phots look like a library. Aren’t we already blessed with a candidate made with the mindset of Gandhi, Mandela and Lee Kuan (Sorry Trump)?

Why don’t we give a chance to Dr Nanthasena to show what he can do to SL?

    • 13

Even Hitler was a vegetarian and teetotaler who was strictly monogamous!

Question – Answer to your question is how can we entrust the country to be ruled by an uneducated Dr (my foot!) Nandasena Gothapakaya, public racist#1, thief, murderer etc. Your vote will make this bastard the judge, jury and executioner. Idiot, what an idiotic question! All the court cases against this bugger are in the limbo of forgotten things. Thanks to Dr Bondscam Ranilpaksha.

I have nothing against Nandasena becoming president, after all we gave Polonnaruwa Sira our vote.
However, have you ever found an honest SL Customs officer ?? They are the worst criminals alongside politicians, followed by Inland Revenue officers, Lawyers, other public servants.

      Question,
He is on long bail awarded by a judiciary which expects him to ‘escape’ from plaints filed against him alleging corruption and misappropriation of state funds for a private purpose.

Only in Sri Lanka can such a person contest the presidency.
It is not known whether the Election Commission can veto his candidacy.

Seems like many of us no longer recognize sarcastic comments ah?

Should we teach media literacy to general public?

What we can do now is having some laughs at our own expense to ease out the pathetic situations we are all in local/regional/international political arena!

      Question ,

Application cancelled ! What’s the big deal if he’s a vegetarian
or teetotaler when he has no money to buy Bacon or Vodka ?
Have you ever heard a man on the street without shelter was
awarded a Doctorate by any of our universities ? Question ,
when was the last time you made a visit to your G P ? There
are two question that has one answer about DR NANDASENA .
      1 . Why did he get U S citizenship ?
      2. Why did he give it up ?
      Answer : Luxury !

The so called intelligent guess work presented by Prof Kum is can be mind boggling to many. Some may think that his imagination is running riot. One of the top bureaucrats, aligned to the UNP in the 1965 – 1970 government said that the UNP would win 66 seats in the 1970 elections when in actual fact it was 8. When the source of information was requested by some the answer was CID. Later we know, through the autobiography of a politician in the Premadasa regime, named “Sereppu Soup” that it was he who made the prediction of 66 seats by making inquiries in the Pettah market. I do hope that Prof. Kum realize that he has a reputation to safeguard and not to be another “Sereppu Soup” in coming to conclusions by attending a rally. Indeed Prof Kum can be a consultant to those engaged in placing bets for the Sri Lankan 2020 presidential elections.

There is a whatsApp message circulating ,

    Quote and unquote.
The SLPP assures the Sinhalese that in the event of Their Presidential election victory, they will fullfil the long overdue prommise to safegaurd national. security by revoking citizenships of any Muslim who can not prove the birth of their grandparents in Sri Lanka , it further states although The Malay, Borah , Memon and Indian moors came after the Porgtuges , Dutch and The British they have valid documets to prove that they were legally naturalised ,.While the Sri Lankan.Muslims are doubtful and believes most of them moved to Sri Lanka illegally after Independence

This is also known as The pledge made to Ven Wirthu , which was supose to have been signed publically and covered by all medias with a counter signature by a local Preist during Ven.Wiruthu’s visit to Sri Lanka

Is this fellow promoting emergence of another Pol Pot in Sri Lanka. This politician Anura is corrupt and very shrewd. He is no different from other Machiavellian political leaders in the country. Finally, we all should agree that “We do not need another Pol Pot” in our country. I vividly remember how this gang of red shirts harassed every decent villager including my own brothers and nephews.

Prof Kumar David’s facts are interesting. Emerging People’s Power is mostly as the results of the deteriorating country’s situation due to the bad governance and management by the so called national political parties. With the time people of all walks of lives are totally disgusted and in want of a new force that can run the country diligently. In the light of the current political climate JVP stands to qualify on all counts. Therefore both UNP and SLFP or SLPP and their alleys stand small with gamut of accusations against them from all quarters. People should not give any more chances to these culprits as it is clearly evident that they can no longer govern this country genuinely. Enough is enough as 71 years is too much of period to fix national issues. What more they want? ….

    4-millions-stripped-citizenship-india-

Remember Sri lanka Muslims are the largest voter bank among muslims , this is how Modi was able to make his present government 99.99% non muslim.
Samething with Rohingyas they were the largest Muslim.vote in Myanmar and now Myanmar is only willing to give few of their children and grandchildren citizenship and voting rights .

You never know what Inida and Myanmar’s agendas are .

Anything is possible , if it is true , many will not be able to work or engage in business legally, no access for travel document to travel, healthcare, education, housing and right to own properties or access to financial institution
There is no gaurantee that UNP and SLFP too will not do the same Sajith and Gota are not too different when it comes to religous and race extremism.
JVP is the only hope and this is why majority of the orig.Sri Lankan Muslim( excluding- Borahs Malays- Memons & Indian Muslims) votes must go to JVP even if Anura does not win and must continue to vote for JVP in full strength during general election so as to make them powerful oppesition atleast .
Better vote for Sinhala MPS of The JVP than vote for any Muslim MPS.

makes sense , why Did Moddi hand pick Sajith as his compion while visiting Sri Lanka ? he also had a private and secret meeting with MR..
So if Gota looses Sajith has to excute of his master plan?

  • 2

MR confirmed on media he prefers only Sajith among UNPers ( is there a catch?)
Why are all politicians so worried about AKD and JVP ?
    good question.

JVP have a very bad past. I experienced during my child hood how they burnt only few CTB busses we had to travel. They orchestrated 2 revolutions before to capture the full control of the country.
Have they changed there motto and revolutionary ideas?
What if they become like PolPot to give hardships to people in the name of revolution? Can anyone who support JVP give a guarantee that this would not happen?
May be you are thinking JVP/UNP collaboration?
Ultra left and ultra right together govern the country? is this a reality?
I think the Pundits have gone nuts?
What I say to the Pundits are, Please leave the country or already left mind your business.
We need leaders and a team act practical and based on facts and figures.
Can not avoid thieves and rouges in a society. But need to control them some how.

        Balls on Toast

Recently I read an interview in which AKD is talking about tried tested and failed models of utopian ideology without being specific.

He wants to bring equality among people but never says anything about Chapter II of the constitution.

He is trying to be in the good books of Sinhala/Buddhist voters. This has been tried since the 1950’s as a result the country has been bleeding for the past 60 years. He is also trapped in the competitive racism though he personally maybe a nice person.

I don’t want a American President,American first lady, American son to be the President of Sri Lanka. Only qualification being to kill any-one who dissents his views. Drugs/Mercenaries/racist monks will be our lot if gota is elected. We will have bombs going off and tightened security and laws which will suit a murderous dictator. We don’t need a pol pot who will create a blood bath and run away to his cia handlers.
Think before you vote.Gota will kill to stay in power, he will kill his brothers if he has to. He is the officer responsible for killings in emilipitya school 1989-1991. children disappeared as they were accused of being Jvp. Lets not go back to a dictatorship, from the freedoms we have now. LETS PUT THE DICTOR IN JAIL.

Gota has nothing to do with Embilipitiya killings. It was ordered by UNP hierarchy in Colombo. Commanding officer of Embilipitiya at that time was Rohana Parakrama Liyanage who was a classmate of mine at Royal. The problem arose when the son of the principal at Embilipitiya school who was a UNP supporter had problem with some boys in the area over an affair with a school girl. He informed the government giving the names of those boys as JVP supporters and used influence to get them killed. When the government changed Liyanage was first interdicted and then sent on compulsory retirement, though he had no hand in those murders, but for being a passive onlooker, he was culpable. This love episode has similarity to Thajudeen murder committed by those involved. Gota may have been responsible for killing JVPers in Matale area where he was stationed in those days.

The JVP old guards are desperate to share their bed with Rajapaksas.
      Please don’t ruin their chances.

The self proclaimed UNP candidate may think twice before contesting the elections.
Dr Mahinda (LLD) wished LSE returned Sajith ony a day or two ago.

There are too many permutation and combination this elections.
      Speculation should wait.

I understand renunciation of US citizenship costs more than $2,500 per person.
He might too poor to pay the required fees.
Try and get together a few of Gota’s cronies and organise a fundraising event. Those who contribute to Gota’s fund should be assured (will not be forgotten) they could earn that amount and more once Gota is crowned.

PP is new name for that given for Terror outfit of JVP founded 1965 May by PDN Wijeweera alias “Rohana” later ” Attnyake” . By the way which is currently an adventurist task of the promoter of agitation and propaganda of that unmeasurable task has undertaken by Kumar David .(Pro.). He was belongs that ex-LSSP political Trotsky-ism . In appearance he was “Left of Old’ Days by converted he shifted New JVP of that “Left” spokesmen! @ $$$.
But his all political ideologies are different from essences of that political practices and perspectives are concerns.

The David’s story of ” Tamil State” in an Island has mixed of topology with that Lenin theory of which that wanted to justifiable his claim for Tamil speaking NEW STATE in Island.
These are a double standards that theory of preach by David Kumar of Trotskyism of ex-LSSPs. The Tamil nationalism of claim by Dr David has NO relationship with Leninism

Election season has started early to distract form the US and Saudi owned IS attacks inquiry and the foriegn hands involved, and from the MCC project to land grab that is gathering steam and this time.

JVP has been very disappointing when it comes to educating the people about the US project to turn Lanka into a military base and land grab, and the need to hold corrupt Muslim MPs who are the US cats paw in the MCC land-grab project accountable. The result is that innocent Muslims are being attacked by Buddhist fundamentalists and the US project to weaponize ethnic and religious identity politics in Sri Lanka and get SOFA signed continues

Dr David’s attempt to promote the JVP to ruling party status, and promote AKD to presidency shows incredible desperation on his part.
    /
Only a fool will even entertain the idea that the JVP has enough political capital in our island for its leader to become president, jointly with others or not. People like Sajith, Rajith and his son, Champika and a dozen or so others in the current 2015 wreck are unlikely to be part of any ‘Front formed (a la 2015), if its to give JVP the leadership.
    /
It appears Dr David, a sinking political minded person is (literally) clutching at snakes!

I am currently watcing Face The Nation of MTV TV 1 News 1st.
This is one program I try my best not to miss , all the moderstors and the dynamic daring young Journalists are excellent & well informed, want to bow my head in respect , and to be fair this freedom we enjoy is someting I am grateful to the current government.

However I am consistent of my opinion , no matter which leader or party takes over it will make zero differnce , my die hard stance is The present Constition must be scrapt and a competely new one introduced , I do not want to repeat the details of what kind of constiturtion I favour , I done to many times.

I take my hats off to JVP , from what I heard from the JVP representative on Face The Nation ,it is very clear that only JVP understand the desperate need to change the system first. I also heard Talvin mention it once,
not putting the cart before the horse as it had been done for 70 years by the previous lot.
My appreciation to Face The Nation
    Thank you
I encourage readers to take time to watch Face The Nation ..

Thank you Majeed for brining up my dream to see the upper house lower house promised by earlier government that was instead replaced by 18th amendment.
What worries me most about Sajith is his die hard attitude to hold on to The Executive Presidency and that is not a good sign or a good message .
I believe under both Sajith and Gota we will return to dictatorship Excutive presidency ..

        Dear Fahim Knight,
        .
You will probably remember me as the guy who made some favourable comments on Freemasons when what you had said was under fire for saying some things about them.
        .
Why not think of giving one of your three Preferences to Nagananda Kodituwakku? I’m just making a comment on his most recent Youtube programme:
        .
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwGij2zGscU
        .
I think that I will give FIRST Preference to Nagananda Kodituwakku, Second to the JVP, and Third to the UNP candidate, whoever the then still unannounced guy may be, to hedge against Gota whom we must at all cost defeat!
        .
        Have a nice day!

As a socialist, can you be honest and say that you make your coffee or does your wife or servants make it and your meals for you? Do you do your own laundry? Make your own bed? Ckean bathrooms in your house or do you consider yourself so fucking too good to do simple tasks at home or share in cooking, cleaning. tending to kids etc.
.oh yes by the way I do all that. And I am a capitalist. JVP IS TOTALLY MALE DOMINATED BACKWARD PEOPLE WHO PREACH while wanting wives to be housemaid nanny, cook roles
