A woman allegedly wearing a saree with prints of lord Buddha’s face was confronted by a mob led by a monk in Trincomalee yesterday. A video going viral shows two women with a child in the Trincomalee but stand comes under threat and was late taken into custody and later released according to reports.
The monk, when the woman confronted tries to explain in Tamil, threatens her to be quiet.
“You talk too much. Just shut up. You try to argue after wearing the offensive saree. If it was a man I would have thrashed him on the floor but since you are a woman I will not do such a thing,” the monk threatens.
The monk is then seen instructing the police officer who is present at the incident that they should arrest the woman and then produced before courts.
The video shared on social media shows the woman baffled as to the offence she has committed and further seeks forgiveness from the monk who says that no one can do as they please as this is a Sinhala Buddhist country and that he cannot just ignore such incidents.
In May this year another woman was arrested for wearing a Kaftan which was claimed to have the design of a Dharmachakra but was of a ship’s wheel.
The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka considering a Fundamental Rights petition of Naomi Michelle Coleman, who was arrested and deported for having a tattoo of the Buddha on her arm, held that her arrest and deportation amounted to a violation of her Fundamental rights.
The woman in this recent incident had been taken to the Trincomalee police station and then later released after changing her clothes. According to sources, she was taken to the police ‘for her own safety’. (By Anuththara Singgapuli)

Monks if they mis-behave, should be de-robbed and flogged. If not we will have foul mouthed monks going around like the mad monk rathne the stud(so many pregnant women after going on protest with rathne) and Gnasaraya the aluthgama killer.
No discipline in Buddhism has brought Buddhism to the gutters, with monks being rapist and phedos . All monks should be checked periodically for std. Most children who stay in temples are sodomized. 10000 cases , not even investigated. Poor children have no one to turn to complain,as police don’t take reports against monks. CT,
Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhist “ monks do not understand Buddhism because they were taken in as 7-year old children , given the senior Monk treatment in their backs, and their brains do not function when they grow up to be adults.
So Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhism” is a distortion of Buddha, and an insult to the Buddha, not the saree with the Buddha face.

In circumcision, only the front one-third to half of the foreskin should be removed, and just enough left to cover the shaft of the flaccid penis.
If more than this is removed, there is not enough foreskin to stretch and cover the erect penis shaft, without pain.
Genito-urinary surgeons are careful about this.

Thanks for being forthright. By placing your comment directly below what I have said, you’ve told me that my denunciation stops short of calling for action. This issue is essentially political rather than religious. The reality is that even I am scared. Were I a Buddhist, I would, perhaps, have come up with a stronger response. The problem is that my background is Christian, although I more or less repudiate that as well. I never deny it.
.
Religion is a personal thing, but the actions of those professing to be the clergy of religions ought at least to measure upto those expected of all citizens. Yes, we ought to demand an end to “foremost place to Buddism”, but would it be sensible to demand it now?

This incident should be read along with the point raised in Padmani’s essay, “…..Armed security or Human security”? Can we expect to have society with sense of security with clergies like this and media that are waiting to set fire on Hanuman Tail (as in Dr Shafi’s case)? Monks will not behave in this manner unless these kinds of attitudes are the norms among their teachers. Spending millions on repairing and/or building temples won’t do any good as long as Buddhist teaching as no place in bringing up monks who occupy those buildings. No amount of Armed security would do any good as long as community leaders behave without even the common sense of human decency!

[“…..when the woman confronted tries to explain in TAMIL,……..”.]Right there is the mistake. The monk doesn’t understand the foreign language. At time native Sinhala-Buddhists and their archeological sites in North and East are under attack by Muslims and Eelamists, it’s good to see monks being vocal about inappropriate clothing.

Anyway, these two ladies could be nice people who wore culturally insensitive Saree by pure ignorance of cultural protocols. The Tamil language issue is worst than the saree issue. If they want live in Sri Lanka, they must learn the native language Sinhalese.

Bawa / August 31, 2019
John old chap, if a Buddhist monk lives in a predominantly Tamil area, then shouldn’t he be able to speak Tamil? How is he going to teach the people Dhamma if he doesn’t speak their language?
I assure you if this man behaved as monk should behave, if he went on alms round daily with his head bowed, if he preached peace and metta instead of hate and violence, he would have an enormous following among the Tamils. It has happened before.

Bawa I agree;
Do Sri Lankans who Migrate to Other Countries, insist on Speaking Sinhala or Tamil?
How far will they go?
Why do Sinhala, Buddhist Monks insist on Speaking in Sinhala in these Countries?
They should be learning English (or the Language of those Countries).
Good Examples to follow are Ven Naradha and Ven Piyadassi!

Perhaps in 1956.

The clergy of this country really don’t know their place. Starting with the so called cardinal who has taken upon himself to advance the cause of the Rajapaksa’s than of Jesus. The Buddhist monks have clearly lost the plot and are acting in a manner that is anti -Buddhism. There is very little hope for Sri Lanka if such behavior is not curtailed. Soon!!!

I appeal to the Minister / Ministry of Buddha Sasana, to please make it the law (I am sure it will get through Parliament without any problem) that any reference to Buddhist images considered an insult to the religion (as interpreted by the maha sanga) is a criminal act but, first, make it clear to the public what is deemed insulting, & by the way, in this particular case, why not go the whole hog & arrest the fabric printer (or the importer of the materiel) & the trader who sold the sari as well? While at it, why not create a Buddhist (Sharia) Police to enforce all these Buddhist safeguards & make sure everybody chants the 5 precepts every morning & observe sil on poya days? That way, everybody will know SL is a Buddhist country & as the guardians of Buddhism.
In London, there are a couple of restaurants called the ‘Laughing Buddha’, even a night club called the ‘Funky Buddha’, & a few years ago, an ageing monk at a London vihara was convicted of paedophilia & deported to SL after serving an 8 year prison sentence, who I believe is now living in a temple in the Gampaha area which runs an orphanage. Of course, as Buddhists, we are convinced that this is all to discredit Buddhism, so at least, in SL, we can now ‘respect’ Buddhism (even punish ‘infidels’) by following the example of extremist Islamic mullahs in the Middle East.

If a women cannot wear a saree with Budha’s picture, is this Priest confirming that Buddha looked like the picture that was printed on the saree? If she cannot wear a saree with this print, should a Buddhist monk who rapes children and women should be castrated? A Buddhist monk who is violent should he be whipped in public? Idiots!

Its time all the women who are against this type of harassment should protest by wearing Buddha print clothes and walk on Galle Face.

I nearly choked on my evening godamba when I read this amazing news about camels.
I have travelled and far and wide and I have never ever seen a camel with its head buried in the sand. (No, not even in Timbucktu where I did see many camels.)

The unacceptable face of Sri Lanka
or
Both.

I have read your comment and the various responses, and sadly, some misunderstandings.
As for me, there is no point in decent people falling out over the madness that has infected our nation.
Religion may have once-upon-a-time held out hope for mortal folk, but now everywhere there is conflict and misery, and religion is in the centre of it all. The undisciplined, rude and violent men who don robes these days must lead many decent people to wonder whether these are the scoundrels to whom they will look to when they seek spiritual guidance.
Long long ago as a teenager, I stood on the stage at the YMBA Borella and proudly recited part of the ‘Light of Asia’. Since then I have lost faith in what has become the God business – worldwide. And, I think God/s, if he/they do exist, has forsaken mankind. I’ll take my chances when the day of reckoning comes.

Long may that day take to arrive Spring Koha.
It all boils down to the unprincipled leadership we now “enjoy” and an unthinking public which fails to recognise right from wrong.
The top two do not know what damage they are causing to our fragile social fabric.

The monk got upset over an image, no big deal. Nothing happened to the woman. In Dubai, people are arrested for kissing in public, while in Pakistan Christians are killed all the time for so-called offenses to Islam and in Saudi Arabia women cannot go outside without a headscarf.
/
Siva Sankaran Sharma / September 1, 2019
All these wrongs do not make what happened correct. She was not kissing and does not have to wear a heard scarf and she is just a poor elderly Tamil woman going about her own business , dressed decently in a saree, ironically not even in a Sinhalese area but in Tamil Trincomallee and is being abused by a Sinhalese racist monk and Sinhalese Buddhist Fascists , who are all supported by a Sinhalese police. They are even arrogantly asking her not to speak in Tamil in Trincomallee, that is part of the Tamil homeland and call this Sinhalese Buddhist land. Who the fack are they come to a Tamil area , harass Tamil people and shout at them for speaking in Tamil, threaten them with physical violence, all because they feel they are superior and the Tamils are inferior people even in their own lands, and a Sinhalese led government, armed forces and police will support them.. Please keep a copy of this video and show it to the so called UN Human rights committees and that stupid UN man, as to really what all non Buddhists and non Sinhalese really face in this country . There is enough and more evidence to persecute all these so called Buddhist Sinhalese clowns and the police and severely punish them. We will see if this so called government is serious about this. It is high time a law is brought against this sort of behaviour and people who indulge in this and the police or armed forces who encourage this behaviour should be severely punished. Lord Budda m as anyone seen Lord Budda in person. The print looks like an Indian dancer or even a Hindu deity or apsara. They seem to be finding Lord Budda everywhere, especially when they want to humiliate the Tamils and Tamil Muslims

Siva Sankaran,
The monk tells her to shut her mouth and go back to India. The monk is rather stupid. This not how monks are taught to treat women. I have never seen a monk like this. Anyway, the monk does not say this is a “Sinhala-Buddhist” country, he says this is “Lankawe”, meaning. S. Lanka. He says, “what will happen to us if we dress like this and go abroad?”

Native Genius,
Just because you can’t keep your fantasies under control doesn’t mean the monks can’t. Most of the monks are well-behaved. Unfortunately, some of them joined the Sangha at a very young age (too early), creating problems with normal development. Buddha did not say everyone can become a monk, most can’t.
