Monk Led Mob Threatens And Calls For The Arrest Of Woman Wearing Saree Bearing Buddha’s Face

A woman allegedly wearing a saree with prints of lord Buddha’s face was confronted by a mob led by a monk in Trincomalee yesterday. A video going viral shows two women with a child in the Trincomalee but stand comes under threat and was late taken into custody and later released according to reports.

The monk, when the woman confronted tries to explain in Tamil, threatens her to be quiet.

“You talk too much. Just shut up. You try to argue after wearing the offensive saree. If it was a man I would have thrashed him on the floor but since you are a woman I will not do such a thing,” the monk threatens.

The monk is then seen instructing the police officer who is present at the incident that they should arrest the woman and then produced before courts.

The video shared on social media shows the woman baffled as to the offence she has committed and further seeks forgiveness from the monk who says that no one can do as they please as this is a Sinhala Buddhist country and that he cannot just ignore such incidents.

In May this year another woman was arrested for wearing a Kaftan which was claimed to have the design of a Dharmachakra but was of a ship’s wheel.

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka considering a Fundamental Rights petition of Naomi Michelle Coleman, who was arrested and deported for having a tattoo of the Buddha on her arm, held that her arrest and deportation amounted to a violation of her Fundamental rights.

The woman in this recent incident had been taken to the Trincomalee police station and then later released after changing her clothes. According to sources, she was taken to the police ‘for her own safety’. (By Anuththara Singgapuli)

Monks if they mis-behave, should be de-robbed and flogged. If not we will have foul mouthed monks going around like the mad monk rathne the stud(so many pregnant women after going on protest with rathne) and Gnasaraya the aluthgama killer.
No discipline in Buddhism has brought Buddhism to the gutters, with monks being rapist and phedos . All monks should be checked periodically for std. Most children who stay in temples are sodomized. 10000 cases , not even investigated. Poor children have no one to turn to complain,as police don’t take reports against monks. UN Has to safe guard the children from homo monks.

      CT,

Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhist “ monks do not understand Buddhism because they were taken in as 7-year old children , given the senior Monk treatment in their backs, and their brains do not function when they grow up to be adults.

So Para-Sinhala Para-“Buddhism” is a distortion of Buddha, and an insult to the Buddha, not the saree with the Buddha face.

What can you expect from imbecile Para-Sinhala monks, mean IQ 79?

Since the Easter attacks that were staged to cause religious riots and destabilize the county and set up US military bases in Sri Lanka, Buddhism is being weaponized and readied via social media and Facebook for another “disaster” .
This is to save US puppet Bondscam Ranil from defeat at the next elections, and paint him as Sri lanka’s liberal saviour!

Expect more Buddhist monks on the rampage as external and internal parties work together to secure the future of US puppet bondscam Ranil and is corrupt butterfly mafia at the next elections..

In Lanka, the moment any idiot puts on a saffron robe he becomes an Einstein, instantly ………. his word is law.

To hell with ordination and temples ………someday when I’m tired of working for a living …… I’m gonna come to Lanka, borrow a yellow sari from Ramona ……. walk around mumbling sweet nothings that sound like wisdom.

“Sinhalese-Buddhists” would’a have to push aside Mahinda, Ranil, Gota, Sajith, Sirisena from the queue to fall down at my feet to worship ……………

Oh boy! I just love Lankans! ……… What would I do without them!

Native, how about a joint-venture into Sinhala-Buddhism and floating it on the NASDAQ?

On the other hand in the long run the many merchants of death may love those shares. Can they ever may a quick buck?

The stick symbol can be PARA, or PSPB (Para-Sinhala Para-Buddhism) that is more specific. There is archeological , modern genetic and historical support for the above.

I do not think US set up Military bases. they want some entertainment space just like in Havana those days, for their Mercenary armies.
Even for Lands, US will never come. It will be the multinational Real ESTATE companies who will buy Tea Estates and coconut lands to build houses. They wait until the Oil palm cultivation establishes to buy out coconut lands at double the price and convert to Real estate. Then all the dumb Sri Lankans will buy this “New Fashion of model Houses”

They think they have full control of this country, and act like thugs and terrorists. Who the hell are they to be the religious police of this country? They go against the teachings of their own religion, and behave like vigilantes. This is because the politicians use them as tools, for their own devious reasons. If they find something offensive, they have to handle the situation tactfully, not become vicious thugs, intimidating women, and threatening to physically attack them.
The decent monks do not behave this way, and speak to all with kindness. These are well fed brutes, who disgrace their religion.
What is the government doing to address this nonsense? Nothing.

I am amused by the monk’s statement to the woman ‘that she may wear this attire in India or any other place, but don’t wear it hear as this is a Sinhala Buddhist land. Has this stupid monk forgotten the man they claim to revere and follow is also an Indian?? or does he think Buddha is ‘Sinhala Buddhist’? The monk’s abuse on the poor woman has done more damage to Buddhism and Sri Lanka at large, than his bullshit claim of the woman’s attire disrespecting Buddhism.

Colombo campus should investigate how many children are infected with std, while in temples as trainee monks. A solution to this is imperative as, we see monks becoming raving mad ,due to std in later life. We see symtoms of this in Gnansaraya and the bbs gangs. Will commit terrorist attacks like in Aluthgama/diggana/ampara if not checked now. This problem has to be solved now. Even 21st april is related to these terrorist monk Gnansaraya.

      Jehan,
Imams are criminals. They are obsessed with circumcising defenseless toddlers. Lots of Muslim men are secretly suffering from botched circumcisions. What would happen if immam approached a grown up man with a blade to perform utter barbaric circumcision??? definitely criminal immam would get a good kick up the backside!!! Recently Muslim teacher was arrested for abusing 13 Muslim pupils in a Muslim school in Badulla.

Circumcision is mandatory for all followers of the abrahamic faith. Why are you singling out only Muslims? Also, apparently, circumcision is actually good for you! It helps with urinary tract infection prevention, and even prevents spread of STD.

        John,
In circumcision, only the front one-third to half of the foreskin should be removed, and just enough left to cover the shaft of the flaccid penis.
If more than this is removed, there is not enough foreskin to stretch and cover the erect penis shaft, without pain.
Genito-urinary surgeons are careful about this.

It may be not be practiced in SL in the scale it is prevalent in the Muslim nations like Saudi Arabia and other Mid East countries,
A SL Gynaecologist friend of mine suspects it is prevalent in SL too on the basis of the few childbirth cases he had encountered.

I suppose the Buddha’s cremation was interrupted by certain people with the intentions of capitalising and perpetuating his memory.
If the cremation was done according to proper Hindu tradition his body would have been allowed to burn completely to ashes and the ashes thrown into the Ganges river to completely dissolve. Then there wouldn’t have been any relics to preserve. Now poor Sidartha’s ashes and bone and tooth relics have assumed importance than his teachings among his so called followers.

All of the reasonable sounding Sinhalese are tacitly supporting the act of the monk and Sinhalese public.

Basically, all of these Sinhalese want the Tamils to accept this as fact of living with Sinhalese, side by side, but in reality under Sinhalese.

Otherwise, they would have called for criminal prosecution and removing foremost place to buddism in the so called Sri Lanka constitution.

        Dear KA,
        .
        Thanks for being forthright.
By placing your comment directly below what I have said, you’ve told me that my denunciation stops short of calling for action. This issue is essentially political rather than religious. The reality is that even I am scared. Were I a Buddhist, I would, perhaps, have come up with a stronger response. The problem is that my background is Christian, although I more or less repudiate that as well. I never deny it.
        .
Religion is a personal thing, but the actions of those professing to be the clergy of religions ought at least to measure upto those expected of all citizens. Yes, we ought to demand an end to “foremost place to Buddism”, but would it be sensible to demand it now?

This incident should be read along with the point raised in Padmani’s essay, “…..Armed security or Human security”? Can we expect to have society with sense of security with clergies like this and media that are waiting to set fire on Hanuman Tail (as in Dr Shafi’s case)? Monks will not behave in this manner unless these kinds of attitudes are the norms among their teachers. Spending millions on repairing and/or building temples won’t do any good as long as Buddhist teaching as no place in bringing up monks who occupy those buildings. No amount of Armed security would do any good as long as community leaders behave without even the common sense of human decency!

Speaking about Muslim artists, there was a famous Indian artist by the name of M.F.Hussein in Bombay before it became Mumbai. He as a poor artist started life drawing pictures on hoardings for Bollywood films and let his artistic images develop an intensifying art form that began to interest rich art collectors.
He drew a picture of Bollywood star Madurai Dixit in the form of Saraswati the Hindu God of Learning,Literature etc.
That was not to the liking of the RSS an orthodox ultra right fascist set up like it’s SL equivalent Gnanasara’s BBS.
M.F.Hussein while on a trip away from India was stripped of his Indian PP by the VajPai Government and he died a very unhappy man out of penury.

Friends, do not get upset or angry over this incident. This is Srilanka, a country of Sinhala Buddhists and its Constitution guarantees foremost place for Buddhism which means Buddhist monks ordained by different Nikayas are above everyone else. Their actions shouldn’t be questioned by people of lower status or rank. They are the guardians custodians of Buddha sasana hence we shouldn’t find fault with this monk. If we do we will be committing sin. Let us follow our politicians and prostrate before them, just like those two ladies did, and accept whatever monk says and does , without a murmur.

Therefore Sinhalese should be liberated from Sinhala/Buddhists and Buddhism from Sinhala/Buddhism.

If you give some serious thought on this issue you will realise how these saffron clad thugs have been pushing people to do things otherwise they don’t even thinking of doing in their wildest dream.

There must be some correlation between why the Muslim women are increasingly seen wearing Burqa, thugs get embolden, ….. corrupt politicians virtually get away with murder, war criminals are rewarded, ….. and Buddhism is being taken over and controlled by saffron clad fascists.

The undisciplined, rude and violent men who don robes these days must lead many decent people to wonder whether these are the scoundrels to whom they will look to when they seek spiritual guidance.

Long long ago as a teenager, I stood on the stage at the YMBA Borella and proudly recited part of the ‘Light of Asia’. Since then I have lost faith in what has become the God business – worldwide. And, I think God/s, if he/they do exist, has forsaken mankind. If I am wrong, I’ll take my chances when the day of reckoning comes.

Peacelover a question to you; does the ‘Indian Buddha’ also have to prostrate before the ‘Sinhala Buddhist monks’? Your statement is utterly foolish for me to even waste my time commenting, but my curiosity as to what your stance on my question got the better of me.

How sad that Buddhism has become the Worship of a Face and Figure, rather than the Practice of Non Violence and Meththa, Karuna!

“How sad that Buddhism has become the Worship of a Face and Figure, rather than the Practice of Non Violence and Meththa, Karuna!”

      You are confused.
Here people are increasingly converting themselves from Buddhism to Sinhala/Buddhism and Sinhala/Buddhists are to Sinhala/Buddhist Fascism.

There are huge differences between Buddhism and Sinhala/Buddhism.
Sinhala/Buddhism does not teach nor practice Non Violence and Meththa, Karuna, on the contrary it teaches:

      Sunday Sil Monday Kill
Kill the Veddah, Rob the Buddha, Blame the Sudda.
      A dead Tamil/Muslim is a good Tamil/Muslim.

Buddhist Monks need to be meditating or preaching and not act as police or Law enforcers.
It’s time for them to act within the LAW.

They should investigate the monk. The monk may be addicted to liquor or illeg drugs. Take a blood report n hair sample. Might be able to find interesting information for sure.

The news is that if a Christian priest or a Hindu swami or a Muslim Imam attacked a woman like this, he would have been arrested on the spot. How can this fellow get away with it?

Now you want a Sinhala Buddhist country right? With the foremost place given to Buddhism right? And you want Buddhism fostered and protected right? In that case the authorities should treat people, and especially minorities, like the Buddha would have, not like savages.

        Bawa,

whats this? . . .about ‘foremost place given to Buddhism’ . . .

In Sri Lanka what they want is ‘foremost place given to Buddhist priests’

To think that our constitution demands that a bunch of devious politicians safeguard Buddhism

You are right; it is not telling where can you get your today’s Biryani Parcel & Arrack. Keep searching the real news. You may have a luck. This is no real news.

That is why, Sinhala, Tamil & English main media purposely blacked it out. It was only in the Social Media until now. Once again CT brought it out.

The news here is about an innocent woman harangued by a foul-mouthed bastard dressed in a yellow robe whilst a brace of policemen without cojones watch on helpless to do what they are paid to do. This is the unacceptable face of Sri Lanka today.

It doesn’t look like the Buddha’s face to me. In any case the monk just wanted to throw his weight around in front of an audience and found his opportunity in this innocent Tamil woman. Poor woman, the monk is a disgrace, the policeman should have arrested him for threatening behaviour.
This type of thing will continue until all monks are registered and controlled.

[“…..when the woman confronted tries to explain in TAMIL,……..”.]Right there is the mistake. The monk doesn’t understand the foreign language. At time native Sinhala-Buddhists and their archeological sites in North and East are under attack by Muslims and Eelamists, it’s good to see monks being vocal about inappropriate clothing.
    /
Anyway, these two ladies could be nice people who wore culturally insensitive Saree by pure ignorance of cultural protocols. The Tamil language issue is worst than the saree issue. If they want live in Sri Lanka, they must learn the native language Sinhalese.

John old chap, if a Buddhist monk lives in a predominantly Tamil area, then shouldn’t he be able to speak Tamil? How is he going to teach the people Dhamma if he doesn’t speak their language?

I assure you if this man behaved as monk should behave, if he went on alms round daily with his head bowed, if he preached peace and metta instead of hate and violence, he would have an enormous following among the Tamils. It has happened before.

        Bawa I agree;
Do Sri Lankans who Migrate to Other Countries, insist on Speaking Sinhala or Tamil?
        How far will they go?
Why do Sinhala, Buddhist Monks insist on Speaking in Sinhala in these Countries?
They should be learning English (or the Language of those Countries).
Good Examples to follow are Ven Naradha and Ven Piyadassi!

When did Sinhala become the Native Language?
      Perhaps in 1956.

Veddah language is the native language.
      Does the thug know it?

“Anyway, these two ladies could be nice people who wore culturally insensitive Saree by pure ignorance of cultural protocols. “

The clergy of this country really don’t know their place. Starting with the so called cardinal who has taken upon himself to advance the cause of the Rajapaksa’s than of Jesus. The Buddhist monks have clearly lost the plot and are acting in a manner that is anti -Buddhism. There is very little hope for Sri Lanka if such behavior is not curtailed. Soon!!!

I appeal to the Minister / Ministry of Buddha Sasana, to please make it the law (I am sure it will get through Parliament without any problem) that any reference to Buddhist images considered an insult to the religion (as interpreted by the maha sanga) is a criminal act but, first, make it clear to the public what is deemed insulting, & by the way, in this particular case, why not go the whole hog & arrest the fabric printer (or the importer of the materiel) & the trader who sold the sari as well? While at it, why not create a Buddhist (Sharia) Police to enforce all these Buddhist safeguards & make sure everybody chants the 5 precepts every morning & observe sil on poya days? That way, everybody will know SL is a Buddhist country & as the guardians of Buddhism.

In London, there are a couple of restaurants called the ‘Laughing Buddha’, even a night club called the ‘Funky Buddha’, & a few years ago, an ageing monk at a London vihara was convicted of paedophilia & deported to SL after serving an 8 year prison sentence, who I believe is now living in a temple in the Gampaha area which runs an orphanage. Of course, as Buddhists, we are convinced that this is all to discredit Buddhism, so at least, in SL, we can now ‘respect’ Buddhism (even punish ‘infidels’) by following the example of extremist Islamic mullahs in the Middle East.

If a women cannot wear a saree with Budha’s picture, is this Priest confirming that Buddha looked like the picture that was printed on the saree? If she cannot wear a saree with this print, should a Buddhist monk who rapes children and women should be castrated? A Buddhist monk who is violent should he be whipped in public? Idiots!

Long may that day take to arrive Spring Koha.

It all boils down to the unprincipled leadership we now “enjoy” and an unthinking public which fails to recognise right from wrong.

The top two do not know what damage they are causing to our fragile social fabric.

The monk got upset over an image, no big deal. Nothing happened to the woman. In Dubai, people are arrested for kissing in public, while in Pakistan Christians are killed all the time for so-called offenses to Islam and in Saudi Arabia women cannot go outside without a headscarf.

    • 3
      1

All these wrongs do not make what happened correct. She was not kissing and does not have to wear a heard scarf and she is just a poor elderly Tamil woman going about her own business , dressed decently in a saree, ironically not even in a Sinhalese area but in Tamil Trincomallee and is being abused by a Sinhalese racist monk and Sinhalese Buddhist Fascists , who are all supported by a Sinhalese police. They are even arrogantly asking her not to speak in Tamil in Trincomallee, that is part of the Tamil homeland and call this Sinhalese Buddhist land. Who the fack are they come to a Tamil area , harass Tamil people and shout at them for speaking in Tamil, threaten them with physical violence, all because they feel they are superior and the Tamils are inferior people even in their own lands, and a Sinhalese led government, armed forces and police will support them.. Please keep a copy of this video and show it to the so called UN Human rights committees and that stupid UN man, as to really what all non Buddhists and non Sinhalese really face in this country . There is enough and more evidence to persecute all these so called Buddhist Sinhalese clowns and the police and severely punish them. We will see if this so called government is serious about this. It is high time a law is brought against this sort of behaviour and people who indulge in this and the police or armed forces who encourage this behaviour should be severely punished. Lord Budda m as anyone seen Lord Budda in person. The print looks like an Indian dancer or even a Hindu deity or apsara. They seem to be finding Lord Budda everywhere, especially when they want to humiliate the Tamils and Tamil Muslims

        Siva Sankaran,

The monk tells her to shut her mouth and go back to India. The monk is rather stupid. This not how monks are taught to treat women. I have never seen a monk like this. Anyway, the monk does not say this is a “Sinhala-Buddhist” country, he says this is “Lankawe”, meaning. S. Lanka. He says, “what will happen to us if we dress like this and go abroad?”

            Native Genius,

Just because you can’t keep your fantasies under control doesn’t mean the monks can’t. Most of the monks are well-behaved. Unfortunately, some of them joined the Sangha at a very young age (too early), creating problems with normal development. Buddha did not say everyone can become a monk, most can’t.

What did he mean by Sinhala-Buddhist country?
When did this island become a Sinhala-Buddhist country?
How did this island become a Sinhala-Buddhist country?
