Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is currently in the island, this evening.
Sources said MR met PM Modi for half an hour this evening at the India House – the residence of the Indian High Commissioner. The details of the discussion however have not been divulged yet.
MR on Friday, confirmed to media that he was expected to meet PM Modi on today. Following his meet up with MR, the Indian PM attended a reception hosted by the Indian High Commissioner at the same premises and left the island a short while ago, concluding his historic two-day visit to the island nation.
Sources state it is likely that MR scheduled his meet up with the Indian Prime Minister prior to the reception since he did not wish to mingle with the guests at the reception that included former President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

What is the sort of message/image both politicians are projecting for the consumption of their own extreme supporters?

It is great that the Indian PM met with Sri Lanka’s former head of state that’s the proper custom in diplomatic circles. Head of states form personal relationships even though they may have differing political views. People of the South of India have a genetic connection with most of the Tamil speaking people of Sri Lanka therefore his interest in Indias brother and sisters residing here and are Srilankan citizens are of vital importance to his role as the Indian head of state.
I agree we need to be more linked to the Indian supply chain as a part of our economic development. Their growth levels are substantial including in manufacturing therefore we will bear great dividends if we could cultivate an economic relationship with India.
Thanks Mr Modi for the offer of closer economic relationship with us.
