Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa today said he would contest the upcoming general election.
Addressing a gathering at his hometown Medamulana he said “People’s requests asking me to contest cannot be ignored”. Rajapaksa however did not say under which political party he will be contesting but he urged representatives of other political parties to rally around him as they did in 2005.
Since the January defeat, SLFP Snubs, Wimal Weerawansa, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Udaya Gammanpila and Dinesh Gunawardena have been campaigning for Rajapaksa and said that their intention is filing former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Prime Ministerial candidate at the upcoming general elections.

What is obvious is that MR will not be allowed to contest as the PM candidate from the UPFA. That will be the end of the UPFA and the MEP will pull out. The only option will be for MR to contest from the MEP along with some of those MPs who currently support him. Then again most who support MR are known corrupt and would jeopardize the chances of the MEP also as this is not a Presidential election and those individuals will drive some of the MEP vote out as well. All in all MEP will end up as a miserable failure along with MR. To avoid this calamity if the MEP denies nominations to some of the known crooks who are supporters of MR, it will further fragment the vote. Such drop outs will not receive nominations from the SLFP also. Mark my word, the day of Nominations will send these MR supporters in to further chaos not knowing their plight, as each will have to look after one’s own seat and not of MR’s. Can someone enlighten me: is there a clause in the constitution that precludes an ex- President from contesting for office in future parliamentary elections? If not, should there be an amendment that brings such a clause in?
At the very minimum, the perquisites awarded to ex-Presidents by way of security, housing, allowance etc should be terminated as soon as such an individual files his nomination papers to contest.
This is the height of greed, and unfortunately something that is not surprising from this piece of trash.
