Murder At Jayewardenepura University

By Arjuna Seneviratne

Arjuna Seneviratne

If a dog lives its life in a specific area, had been doing so for years, is properly cared for, neutered when necessary, fed, watered and sheltered, is at least content if not downright happy, provides contentment and happiness to its primary caregivers, that dog is not footloose or set astray. It is a factor, a component, a definite entity of a larger social order, habitat if you may, where it has its place, has its role.  If that habitat is a small apartment, annexure or home, then the alpha-dog of that space, in most cases a human will be responsible for the dog and will look after it and take responsibility for it. If it is a much larger space such as the premises of J’Pura University, occupied by a large number of human beings hailing from various places for various reasons, then  alpha-dog is not a person sitting in some high chair but rather, a collection of those that look out for that dog. If decisions have to be made about that dog, then it is those caregivers who should make those decisions not someone far removed from any idea of such matters as habitats, definition of strays or ideas of social-anthropology, animal domestication or institutional culture. Those decisions cannot be made by an unqualified, intellectually vacant, socially bereft apology for a human being. Such decisions cannot be made by people like the Vice Chancellor of J’Pura university. He has no clue, therefore, he has no say. He cannot understand and will never understand that the dog population of all of our universities form an integral part of the portal, has been so for decades and are pets to a large number of students and teachers and by no means strays.

Yet, this man has taken it upon himself to give strange definitions for what constitutes strays, vermin and pests.  He has decided, contrary to every definition of canines, that they are pests akin to cockroaches and termites. Things that need to be crushed underfoot or gassed out. Therefore, he decides in his maladjusted mind, to hire a terminator, a pest controller to exterminate the dog population of the J’Pura campus. Just as much as he doesn’t know how many termites are eating away at his books, he has no clue how many dogs there are. He only knows that they need to be sprayed with sarin or worse. There were 83 dogs a month ago. 30 of them have been murdered by a pest controller. If he wanted the dog population of the university wiped out he didn’t succeed. Instead he only succeeded in performing illegal, extra-judicial action that brought out a storm of grief and protest from all parts of the country. The outpouring of shock and horror was akin to sentiments expressed across the world at the extermination of human beings in Syria recently. This madman doesn’t understand that what he caused to be done to the dogs at J’Pura was no different to what was caused to be done to human beings in Syria. According to eyewitness reports, the dogs started vomiting, foaming at the mouth, losing consciousness in the same way, with the same suffering, over the same period of time as the human beings in Syria.

The students fought back, hard, on behalf of their beloved pets and they did it right. Even as they sobbed their hearts out that a pregnant bitch they had been caring for had been poisoned to death, they asked the careless, vicious, heartless, soulless, lawless VC for a meeting. He ignored them. They went to the police. They wrote to the papers. They campaigned on social media. They invoked every relevant law, directive and circular to protect the canines that were still left. Their voice could not be stilled and it was taken up by the larger populace of this country full of the followers of the Buddha and Lord Shiva to whom such action constitutes nothing less than murder.

This man has and will continue to try to use political clout to still the inquiry or, if possible, go against the very grain of governance and skew the findings of the inquiry that is being currently conducted. As I write, not only as a follower of the Buddha’s Dharma, a humanist, an ahimsaavaadi, a social activist, a musician, an environmentalist, an anthropologist, a corporate strategist, a mathematician and a lecturer, but also as an active member of the National Consumer Movement of Sri Lanka and a promoter of His Excellency the President’s campaign for a sustainable Sri Lanka where the sanctity of all sentient life is one of the priorities and for whom this sort of irrational, illegal behavior is anathema, so too, many others have taken up the righteous voice of these children and converted it into a roar that no amount of political clout can still. This man will be held accountable. This man will be persecuted. This man will pay for his crimes against life.

    Dear Arjuna,
“This man will be held accountable. This man will be persecuted. This man will pay for his crimes against life.”
I agree entirely with your sentiments. I am a dog lover myself.
Since both of you seem to be Sinhala Buddhists, please don’t have the guy hanged . Just have him neutered, OK?

University premises is for a specific purpose of studying and not rearing dogs. If these students want to have a pet they are at liberty to get back to their homes and look after a pet very happily.

It’s tragic that in this land where Show Buddhism is paraded about at every opportunity, we cannot show some compassion or empathy for other living things

Actually, it is true of all inhabitants of this country whether human or animal

    We just don’t give a s..t!

What if you all pay and take a dog home? Stray dogs are a menace at times. RABIES?

Well here is a solution. Invite Korean Investors to open specialty Korean restaurants.

After an operation dogs need only some hours to completely wake up and the process starts after 5-15 minutes. If a dog needed 3 days to recover the amount and/or sedative(s) have been something vets will not use. If the idea was to kill the dogs there must be bodies.

How did Ultrakill or Janaka obtain a sedative in large enough amounts and who injected it? Strong sedatives are not legally available without a prescription. I suspect another crime has been committed in obtaining the sedative illegally.

This kind of action will not help because people will abandon their unwanted pets and puppies. The people should be educated.

The VC apparently is stupid and dishonest or suffers from early Alzheimer’s. May a rabid rat bite him.

      A Dog Lover

With all due respect , please do not make this a religious issue . It is a fact that there are far too many stray dogs on the roads. Recently an elderly gentleman was attacked by a pack of stray dogs and needed medical attention . When people feel unsafe to walk the streets for fear of dog attacks, it becomes
a major health and safety issue .

This country is ruined by bogus emotions, full of people who pretend to be kind, caring, and good Samaritans but, all bogus. And they are great pretenders. Look at the wording used by this person Arjuna Seneviratne. Not only him there are full of people like this in this country, and they are vociferous and have mastered the art of talking with empathy and manipulate almost all the good work done. The day we identify these con-artists only our country will prosperous and will be a better place to live. Vice Chancellor removed the dogs for a purpose, to protect students and teachers from rabies. Is this Arjuna cared or spared a word about this threat. Arjuna Seneviratne you are the murderer, for stopping people from protecting masses from rabies.

This man, VC of USJP is a terribly corrupt man. He turns a blind eye to the despicable acts of ragging, occuring out in the open. When students try to stand against these acts, most of the time they are assaulted. No action is taken against the students who waste the free education provided to them by the state. The VC is also very crafty at not letting these incidents reach the broader public. He stops students from even posting about these incidents on social media. He’s a manipulative and spineless man. He has the authority to act against such cruel acts and put a permanent stop to ragging, but shows no interest. He supports the students who go around ragging innocent students whichever way they like. The dogs were removed because they supposedly bit some students, what about the students (raggers) who ‘bite’ other innocent students? The dog bites may heal with time, but can the emotional and mental ‘bites’ of ragging ever heal?

I am surprised, why this forum(ColomboTelegraph) giving so much publicity for these sick people, who don’t care about humans and Rabies threats. This forum should use their own judgement, and make a decision to what is good for the society and accordingly prominence should be given. Otherwise, it will be considered an unattended forum, where anyone and everyone can write anything.

Arjuna claims to be a mathematician. His choice of words like kidnapping, murder etc are irrational.

In an ordered society, domesticated animals would be nurtured, cared for and looked after by someone responsible. Animals let loose in an urban environment are vermin, and should be put out of their misery. Do-gooders like Hasini Silva and her friends would have done better to find each of the stray dogs a permanent home, and solve the problem at a stroke. IF one in 500 of those who signed the petition, had adopted one of the dogs and given them a home, the problem would have been solved at a stroke. Don’t our students have anything better to do; like studying.
