The death of a Sri Lankan Muslim in Syria, Sharfaz Shuraih Muhsin from Kandy, known in the Islamic State as Abu Shuraih Sailani who fought along with IS has brought the Muslim religious and civil society leadership in Sri Lanka to unequivocally condemn the IS.
At a meeting convened by the All Ceylon Jamiyaathul Ulama (ACJU), the apex religious body of Islamic theologians in Sri Lanka, lead Muslim organizations adopted a declaration condemning IS and declaring them as un-Islamic and inhumane. Their declaration affirms that Islam is a religion of peace and tranquility. Islam values human life and equates the unlawful killing of a single individual to the killing of the entire human race.
They condemn IS (ISIS) as a violent extremist organization that acts against the fundamental teachings of Islam. It is an absolutely deviant organization, which operates against all the principles and tenets of Islam, their declaration states.

Joint declaration by the Muslim Organizations of Sri Lanka on the issue of IS (ISIS) and Extremism:
We, the representatives of the main Muslim Organizations in Sri Lanka, present at the anti-extremism conference organized by the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU), held on the 22nd July 2015, condemn in unequivocal terms all forms of violence and extremism.
Islam is a religion of Mercy for all humanity. It is the fountainhead of Eternal Peace, Tranquility, Security and Brotherhood. Islam attaches such value to human life that it equates the killing of a single being unlawfully with the killing of the entire human race, without differentiation based on creed or caste. Its teachings of peace and brotherhood encompass all humanity. Islam teaches us to treat all mankind with equality, mercy, tolerance and justice. Islam sternly condemns all kinds of oppression, violence and extremism. It regards oppression, mischief, rioting and murders amongst the severest sins and crimes.
The IS (ISIS) is a violent extremist organization, which acts against the fundamental teachings of Islam. It is an absolutely deviant organization, which operates against all the principles and tenets of Islam. Unfortunately, the word ‘Jihad’ has been misinterpreted by the Western media to mean killing or waging unjust wars. Any organization that kills innocent people under the guise of Jihad, it is totally outside the pale of Islam. We endorse the booklet published by the ACJU that explains the correct spiritual concept of Jihad based on authentic Islamic religious texts.
We appreciate the initiatives taken by the ACJU to expose the ISIS as an un-Islamic and extremist organization, in an informative broadcast through the SLBC on the 6thof July 2014 and the statement issued to the media on the 30thof August 2014. Subsequently several International Islamic Institutions and countries have condemned the ISIS as an extremist organization engaged in acts contrary to Islamic teachings.
We strongly and unequivocally condemn any person associated with the ISIS or any other extremist organization operating under the guise of Islam. We do not condone any person or organization that engages in extremism in any form.
We strongly call upon the government to take action against any individual involved in any form of extremism. We also wholeheartedly offer our fullest support and co-operation to all government agencies to identify such anti-social and criminal elements in order to eliminate this menace from our Motherland.
We call upon the media to act with responsibility and objectivity. We also urge them not to sensationalize such issues as not to endanger peaceful co-existence prevailing amongst the communities in Sri Lanka.
We Muslims have, over the centuries, demonstrated our patriotism and loyalty to Sri Lanka. We affirm that we will not act in any manner that it detrimental to our Motherland.

The statement by All Ceylon Jamiyaathul Ulama (ACJU) is exactly the right thing to do. Very welcome. They must lead this fight from the front.
No country is immune to the menace of IS barbarism. It is a matter of time before it affects Sri Lanka. We need to be ready for that day psychologically and otherwise.
Sri Lanka needs a truly professional Intelligence Service. It must adhere to standards of civil liberties guaranteed by our constitution. It must be held accountable and supervised by Parliament. Sri Lankan Intelligence Service must not become a tool of corrupt politicians, who choose to spy on political opponents. It must not turn into yet another torture chamber. We have too many of those already.
However, a well-run Sri Lankan Intelligence Service must have tools to feel the pulse of what is going on inside Sri Lanka or elsewhere. While we are asleep.
Such a pro-active military component will not cure the inevitable onset of ISIL cancer fully. However, good intelligence will be the single most potent weapon. In order protect citizens of Sri Lanka, in particular fellow Muslim citizens & their kids from radicalization .

I think ACJU has jumped the Gun before doing there home-work. Khalipet was destroyed in 1924, and now it has come back. People in authority might not like it, but it is the reality. Even with 70 odd nations fighting IS its still surviving.And expanding. This person who went there made his choice, whats wrong with our so called muslim leaders, when did they become the sole authority who is a muslim and who is not a muslim. Its better to allow people to go if they will than keep them in Sri Lanka, as there is no violence in Sri Lanka. This ACJU policies will back fire if constrains are placesd- this is the normal outcome- looking from historical perspective. Also why publicize then ask media not to sensationalize. among the muslim populations, there is bound to be some extreme elements and out of that there is going to be few who would take the extreme step of actually putting to action that extremism. This guy is one of them. He got what he deserve. If any one is crazy enough to fight for ISIS then that person must be a fanatic.
Just like this there are a few in Sri Lanka who support Pakistan when Sri Lanka plays them. I know a few who do that. The main complain they have is why there is no Sri Lankan muslim given an opportunity to play criket at national level when South Africa, England and India has. The shift to support Pakistan has taken over a course of time.
It is a question worth asking, I am not sure whether we have talented muslims playing crickets in Sri Lanka who is capable of representing national side. I have read about a muslim school boy from Kandy who was supposed to be a very good spinner is a prospect but have not heard much about him since.
I would also like to highlight Jehan Mubarak was given certain opportunities.
We also have to accept just like having difficulties of getting admission to prominent Buddhist schools there is a problem in our Cricket. This could be political.
Extremism among Muslims in Sri Lanka is coming out of frustration. I have met the Muslim relatives of 17 Aid workers killed in Mutur. All of them have very bitter feelings towards their motherland due to how the incident was handled.
Effort is required from rulers to reconcile. We have to accept that some mistakes has happen in the past. Unless that is done the future will always be shrouded in distrust.
I would also like to highlight that wearing abaya whether with face cover or not and men growing their beard or wearing arab style dress is not extremism. This is due to stronger belief in the faith. There is no influence of extremism or no force to change. Coming from a family where women who were public servants wearing Sareee all of them have shifted to abays now. It was a gradual transition which came with greater knowledge on religious practice. The men have changed too.
In the end when you believe in a religion isn’t that what you want ? with information exchange/travel growing rapidly Islamic culture from Islamic countries caught up with Muslims in Sri Lanka. When that happens one understand and practice the religion to the fullest over time. That’s what the muslims are doing. Among them you will find few who want to take a short cut, and take the extreme route.
Muslims in Sri Lanka have been one of the most tolerant. I am sure this has been influenced by the nature of good Buddhist who we live with.
However while the majority of Muslims have been striving hard to uplift their religious beliefs same cannot be said about the Singhala Buddhist they have been driven far from their religious teachings. I know this as a fact as all my friends are Buddhist and majority of them are name sake Buddhist. Now don’t look at this statement with a narrow mind. Buddhism in Sri Lanka has lost it splendor. One can find good Buddhist in countries like Thailand and Japan, when you move with them one get the feeling how peaceful and tolerant those people are.
No matter what amount of minority basing, is going to elevate the standard of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It is only going to turn worst. I would like to remind some of my early made up statistics where 99% of violence/murder/rape/suicide/alcoholism/Soodu is coming from majority community.
A well thought out plan at national level collectively by government through education, temples, daham pasal and media taking in to consideration the reality not in false pretense is required to elevate and educate the majority community to uplift their faith.
1st step on that would be to elect a government which is citizen focused.

Author Robert Lacey quotes a fatwa by bin Baz urging caution towards claims that the Americans had landed on the moon. “We must make careful checks whenever the kuffar [infidels] or faseqoon [immoral folk] tell us something: we cannot believe or disbelieve them until we get sufficient proof on which the Muslims can depend.”[27] Lacey states that “after extensive research” of bin Baz’s fatawa, he (Lacey) had only been able to find this one fatwa on the subject, and no statement in it that the earth was flat.[27] Lacey does however say that according to his source, Bin Baz gave an interview after publishing the article
“in which he mused on how we operate day to day on the basis that the ground beneath us is flat … and it led him to the belief that he was not afraid to voice and for which he became notorious.”[27]
Though satirized for his belief,
“the sheikh was unrepentant. If Muslims chose to believe the world was round, that was their business, he said, and he would not quarrel with them religiously. But he was inclined to trust what he felt beneath his feet rather than the statements of scientists he did not know.”[27]
According to Lacey, bin Baz changed his mind about the earth’s flatness after talking to Prince Sultan bin Salman Al Saud who had spent time in a space shuttle flight in 1985. [27]
However, Malise Ruthven and others state that it is incorrect to report that Ibn Baz believed “the earth is flat”[28] Professor Werner Ende, a German expert on ibn Baz’s fatwas, states he has never asserted this.[29] Abd al-Wahhâb al-Turayrî calls those that attribute the flat earth view to ibn Baz “rumor mongers”. He points out that ibn Baz issued a fatwa declaring that the Earth is round,[30][31] and, indeed, in 1966 ibn Baz wrote “The quotation I cited [in his original article] from the speech of the great scholar Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah be merciful to him) includes proof that the earth is round.”[32]
In his 1966 article, ibn Baz did claim that the sun orbited the earth,[33][34][35] and that “the earth is fixed and stable, spread out by God for mankind and made a bed and cradle for them, fixed down by mountains lest it shake”.[35] As a result of the publication of his first article, ibn Baz was ridiculed by Egyptian journalists as an example of Saudi primitiveness,[29] and King Faisal was reportedly so angered by the first article that he ordered the destruction of every unsold copy of the two papers that had published it.[26][35]
In 1982 Ibn Baz published a book, Al-adilla al-naqliyya wa al-ḥissiyya ʿala imkān al-ṣuʾūd ila al-kawākib wa ʾala jarayān al-shams wa al-qamar wa sukūn al-arḍ (“Treatise on the textual and rational proofs of the rotation of the sun and the motionlessness of the earth and the possibility of ascension to other planets”). In it, he republished the 1966 article, together with a second article on the same subject written later in 1966,[36] and repeated his belief that the sun orbited the earth.[28] In 1985, he changed his mind concerning the rotation of the earth (and, according to Lacey, ceased to assert its flatness), when Prince Sultan bin Salman returned home after a week aboard the space shuttle Discovery to tell him that he had seen the earth rotate.[26][27]
In addition, there was controversy concerning the nature of the takfir (the act of declaring other Muslims to be kafir or unbelievers) which it was claimed Ibn Baz had pronounced. According to Malise Ruthven, he threatened all who did not accept his “pre-Copernican” views with a fatwa, declaring them infidels.[37] Ibn Baz wrote a letter to a magazine in 1966 responding to similar accusations:
“I only deemed it lawful to kill whoever claims that the sun is static (thābita la jāriya) and refuses to repent of this after clarification. This is because denying the circulation of the sun constitutes a denial of Allah (Glorified be He), His Great Book, and His Honorable Messenger. It is well established in the Din (religion of Islam) by way of decisive evidence and Ijma` (consensus) of scholars that whoever denies Allah, His Messenger or His Book is a Kafir (disbeliever) and their blood and wealth become violable. It is the duty of the responsible authority to ask them to repent of this; either they repent or be executed. Thanks to Allah that this issue is not debatable among scholars.”[32]
Ibn Baz’s second article written in 1966 also responded to similar accusations:
“I did not declare those who believe that the earth rotates to be infidels, nor those who believe that the sun moving around itself, but I do so for those who say that the sun is static and does not move (thābita la jāriya), which is in my last article. Whoever says so being an infidel is obvious from the Quran and the Sunnah, because God almighty says: ‘And the sun runs on (tajri) to a term appointed for it’ … As for saying that the Sun is fixed in one position but still moving around itself, …, I did not deal with this issue in my first article, nor have I declared as infidel anyone who says so.”[36][38]
Western writers subsequently have drawn parallels between their perception of ibn Baz and the trial of Galileo by the Catholic Church in the 16th century.[39]
