Muslims Ready To Follow Many Concepts Of Buddhism, Are Buddhists Ready..?

By Mza.zakky

Mza.zakky

Buddhism is divided into two main divisions and several sub divisions based on country and culture. Fundamental beliefs include the three jewels, the four noble truths, the eightfold path and the five precepts.  The three jewels are the Buddha, the Dharma (the teachings), and the Sangha (the community) and taking refuge in them is the basis of Buddhist practice.  The four noble truths are the universality of suffering, the origin of suffering, the overcoming of suffering and the way leading to the suppression of suffering.

The way or path is known as the eightfold path  and consists of dṛṣṭi (ditthi): viewing reality as it is, not just as it appears to be, saṃkalpa (sankappa): intention of renunciation, freedom and harmlessness, vāc (vāca): speaking in a truthful and non-hurtful way, karman (kammanta): acting in a non-harmful way, ājīvana (ājīva): a non-harmful livelihood, vyāyāma (vāyāma): making an effort to improve, smṛti (sati): awareness to see things for what they are with clear consciousness, being aware of the present reality within oneself, without any craving or aversion, samādhi (samādhi): correct meditation or concentration.

The five precepts outline Buddhist ethics.  Do not kill, be kind to all creatures.  Do not steal, give rather than take.  Do not lie, be honest and open.  Do not misuse sex and do not consume alcohol or use recreational drugs.

Alcohol consumption is inconsistent with a Buddhist’s quest to understand and develop the mind. Buddhists believe that by practicing meditation, wisdom and morality, every individual has the innate ability to experience true happiness.

The Buddha encouraged his followers to refrain from consuming any kind of intoxicant. This included alcohol, cigarettes and drugs. These substances are said to be inconsistent with Buddhist beliefs as they distort the mind. Buddhists regard the mind as precious; they work diligently, through meditation, to master it.
Buddhists follow five precepts, serving as guidelines for correct and moral behavior. One of the precepts clearly states that Buddhists should ‘refrain from taking intoxicants’. Buddhists adhere to these guidelines with differing degrees of success.

Only a small number of followers practice Buddhism seriously, even though an overwhelming number of people in Buddhist countries, such as Sri lanka, identify as Buddhists. Despite the Buddha’s teachings, a number of Srilankan Buddhists adolescents consume alcohol.

A survey conducted in a semi-urban community in southern Sri Lanka (total sample size n = 783) revealed that

5% of females and 52.5% of males aged above 10 years old were current alcohol users. Age-specific prevalence

of alcohol use was highest among those aged between 40 to 50 years for both sexes. By ethnicity, the highest prevalence was found among Tamils (43%), followed by Sinhalese (32%) and Muslims (9%).

Despite the popularity of Buddhism as a philosophy in the west, few people are willing to follow the Buddha’s advice regarding alcohol. People with a shallow understanding of Buddhism may believe that alcohol is acceptable if used in moderation, justifying this in terms of the Buddha’s preaching of the ‘Middle Way’ philosophy.
The Buddha was against any form of alcohol consumption, even in moderation, because of the effect it has on the mind.

Mindfulness is central to Buddhist philosophy. This concept requires a constant awareness of changes occurring in the mind and body. Mindfulness enables the individual to react wisely to emotions and sensations when they arise. Alcohol distorts the mind and makes it impossible to practice this tenet.
Karma is another Buddhist teaching inconsistent with the use of alcohol. The Buddha taught that each individual must be responsible for one’s own Karma. This involves being responsible for the consequences of one’s actions, speech and thoughts. Alcohol tends to encourage irresponsibility. It is possible to generate much negative karma while under the influence of alcohol.

The Buddha taught that true happiness was to be found in letting go of attachments. Many people are deeply attached to the feelings they experience when drinking alcohol. Through meditation it is possible to let go of this attachment. Buddhist meditation has been successful in treating alcoholism.

Many people use alcohol as a means of avoiding problems that arise in life. Buddhism encourages people to deal with life’s difficulties and challenges. It encourages individuals to view problems as opportunities to learn and grow. By practicing meditation, an individual can develop the courage and determination to deal with life, rather than rely on alcohol to create an artificial sense of contentment. Alcohol consumption is inconsistent with Buddhist beliefs for a number of reasons. Buddhists exert an enormous amount of effort through meditation in order to change the mind. By consuming alcohol the individual is unable to have any control over the mind.

Islam also has same philosophy about alcohol consumption. Islam’s holistic approach to health and well-being means that anything that is harmful or mostly harmful, is forbidden.  Therefore, Islam takes an uncompromising stand towards alcohol and forbids its consumption in either small or large quantities.  Alcohol is undoubtedly harmful and adversely affects the mind and the body.  It clouds the mind, causes disease, wastes money, and destroys individuals, families, and communities.  Researchers have proven that there is a strong link between alcohol and gambling.  Drinking impairs judgment, lowers inhibition, and encourages the type of risk taking involved in gambling and dangerous activities.  God tells us in the Quran that intoxicants and gambling are abominations from Satan and orders us to avoid them.  (Quran 5: 90)

Alcohol is considered highly carcinogenic, increasing the risk of mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, and breast cancers.  Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can lead to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, causing the child to be small at birth, have some facial malformations, small eye openings, webbed or even missing fingers or toes, organ deformities, learning disabilities, mental retardation and much more.

Even though it is clear that alcohol is responsible for a great many evils it is legal and even encouraged in most societies.  In Muslim countries where alcohol is forbidden many people still find it difficult to resist temptation and fall prey to the disease that is alcoholism.  Amazingly even in the light of such startling evidence against alcohol, people around the globe continue to consume alcohol in ever-increasing amounts.

At the time of accident, 89% of drivers and 28.1% of pedestrians were under the influence of alcohol. Alcohol was related to 67.4% of accidents taking place during the night.

According to the Department of Traffic Police, the detections of driving under the influence of alcohol were 8.86% in 1990 but had increased to 20.75% in 1993.

According to the Ministry of Health, the number of cases of those hospitalized due to alcohol psychosis, alcohol dependence and alcohol withdrawal had increased by 4436 cases from 1998 to 1999.

– WHO Global Status Report on Alcohol 2004

Alcohol affects the mind and makes sinful behavior and evil actions fair seeming.  It creates enmity and hatred between people, prevents them from remembering God and distracts them from praying, and calls them to participate in unlawful sexual relationships.  Alcohol generates shame, regret, and disgrace, and renders the drinker witless.  It leads to the disclosure of secrets and exposure of faults.

“Satan wants only to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants (alcoholic drinks) and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of God and from the prayer.  So, will you not then abstain?” (Quran 5:91)

“O you who believe!  Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), gambling, idolatry, and diving arrows are an abomination of Satan’s handiwork.  So avoid that so that you may be successful.” (Quran 5: 90)

The Quran is a book of guidance sent to all of humankind.  It is a set of instructions from the Creator for His creation. God links alcohol and gambling to idolatry and declares it filthy and evil; however, He is merciful and generous towards the believers and acknowledges the power of addiction.  Islam is a community-oriented faith.  There is no place for an individual to do what he wants to do, if it hurts others.  Alcohol abuse affects not just the alcoholic but also his or her family, and community.  There is great wisdom in the prohibition of alcohol.

A survey conducted in a semi-urban community in southern Sri Lanka (total sample size n = 783) revealed that 5% of females and 52.5% of males aged above 10 years old were current alcohol users. Age-specific prevalence of alcohol use was highest among those aged between 40 to 50 years for both sexes. By ethnicity, the highest prevalence was found among Tamils (43%), followed by Sinhalese (32%) and Muslims (9%). WHO Global Status Report on Alcohol 2004

According to this report Tamils and Sinhalese are first opponents of a main concept (precepts) of Buddhism. We can’t kill human by approving alcohol. So as Muslims, we follow Islam as well as many concepts of Buddhism. We never give halal certificate to alcohol. In these things Muslims are real Buddhists. Why don’t refrain alcohol from srilanka? We are ready to make history. We Muslims invite Sinhalese to make our nation as wonder of Asia by giving haram (not acceptable) certificate to alcohol

Well done Zakky. We hope and pray that people listen to this teaching beyond racial and communal bias: In Sri Lanka people are good only tiny bit of them bias and racists but 95% percentage are good: They do not like to harm any one: this % may learn something from this: people like Lester.Leela, and Jimsofty should read this and learn lessons of true Buddhism

      Dear Mza Zakly,

A very good write up. Of course there are difference between the religions, on how to live this life, how to prepare for afterlife, and what to expect in afterlife.

In a nutshell, Sufism much closer to Buddhism, but basically try to get to to the same end point in this life.

Islam rewards with Heaven, and punishes with Hell. Islanm has a Universal God. Buddhism has no Universal God. It is a Philosophy. Even, Hinduism has a Universal God, and it differs here with Buddhism

Buddhism rewards with, Nirvana, Nibbana, Rebirth, Sansara and punishes with perpetual rebirth, and Apaya.

What is interesting is that Akbar the Great had great conferences and debates, where Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christian, Jains, Zoroastrian and others were asked to explain their beliefs, and Akbar wanted to come up with a Universal Religion. He declared that every religion had good points, but was incomplete. He formed his own religion Sulh-e-kul, meaning universal peace.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akbar

      Religious policy

Portrait of the Mughal Emperor Akbar invocation of a Dua prayer.
Akbar, as well as his mother and other members of his family, are believed to have been Sunni Hanafi Muslims.[102] His early days were spent in the backdrop of an atmosphere in which liberal sentiments were encouraged and religious narrow-mindednness was frowned upon.[103] From the 15th century, a number of rulers in various parts of the country adopted a more liberal policy of religious tolerance, attempting to foster communal harmony between Hindus and Muslims.[104] These sentiments were earlier encouraged by the teachings of popular saints like Guru Nanak, Kabir and Chaitanya,[103] the verses of the Persian poet Hafez which advocated human sympathy and a liberal outlook,[105] as well as the Timurid ethos of religious tolerance in the empire, persisted in the polity right from the times of Timur to Humayun, (the second emperor of the mughal empire), and influenced Akbar’s policy of tolerance in matters of religion.[106] Further, his childhood tutors, who included two Irani Shias, were largely above sectarian prejudices, and made a significant contribution to Akbar’s later inclination towards religious tolerance.[106]

When he was at Fatehpur Sikri, he held discussions as he loved to know about others’ religious beliefs. On one such day he got to know that the religious people of other religions were often bigots ( intolerant of others religious beliefs ). This led him to form the idea of the new religion, Sulh-e-kul meaning universal peace. His idea of this religion did not discriminate other religions and focused on the ideas of peace, unity and tolerance.

In the end, new religion, Sulh-e-kul meaning universal peace, did not take off because it was not Muslim enough for the Muslim Ulemahs and Mullahs, and not Hindu enough for the Hindu Priests. This was pure self interest of the Mullahs and Priests.

So, what is the moral of the story from the Akbar, the Great’s Experiment?

The answer is blowing in the wind, the answer is blowing in the wind….

Good attempt to pass the ball to SL Buddhists again

But Zakky should come out of the box he is in. Nobody knows how old the human use of alcohol is and even our Lord Buddha’s’ time (much before the birth of Islam) it was around. But Lord Buddha never asked the then rulers to ban it and it is not the Lord Buddha who first found and taught that alcohol is bad in every aspect either. Does Zakky know the alcohol and narcotic drug use statistics in those (Muslim) countries it has been already banned but freely available/ smuggled at high price for the needy under hand and used behind closed doors? And How many Muslim countries have banned Alcohol use? Many people in those oil rich countries that don’t have to depend on external trade and services (tourism etc.) are alcohol addicts as they frequently travel to east and west for sex tours and to enjoy other things not available in their land that provide them enough money to do the banned things beyond the borders. We know that majority of the drug traffickers and sellers not only in SL but also in those Muslim countries are non other than Muslims. So it is, as Lord Buddha correctly said, all about self discipline and you or anybody can not free or represent one group as majority of the human kind regardless of their religion and race is bad not only towards the entire outside world (living and environment) but also towards himself.

PS: His interpretation to Noble triple gem should be corrected as ‘The three jewels are the Buddha, the Dhamma (the teachings of Buddha), and the Sangha (the community of monks who had followed and have been following the path of Buddha and Dhamma) and following the path of the three is the basis of Buddhist practice.

Ajith, what Zakky was discussing was the similarities about Buddhism and Islam on intoxicants. There are drunkards, murderers, rapists belonging to every religion. It is not the fault of the religion, it is the fault of the people not following. Lets solve the problem of drunkeness, not pointing fingers at others.

          Dear Goraka,

“It is not the fault of the religion, it is the fault of the people not following.”

Well said and articulated. Read the following and enjoy.

By the way, Al-kuhul, or Alcohol is an AlChemi word, introduced by the Islamic Alchemist Scientists. The invented distillation, to concentrate alcohol from fermented wine and other products, the forefathers of Whisky, and Kasippu. Al-kuhul was invented After Islam was introduced, and there was a debate as to whether, Al-kuhul was “wine” or not. The Ulema won out, using analogical reasoning, and it was prohibited.

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Knox_(sailor)

Robert Knox, wrote that when he was in Ceylon, the people, Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims did not drink alcohol. There is some truth to alcohol consumption and taxes, the “Sin” tax, a kind of modern day “Indulgence” Tax to be paid to the State in this life.

During the voyage Knox wrote the manuscript of An Historical Relation of the Island Ceylon, an account of his experiences on Ceylon, which was published in 1681. The book was accompanied by engravings showing the inhabitants, their customs and agricultural techniques. It attracted widespread interest at the time and made Knox internationally famous, influencing Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe as well as sparking a friendship with Robert Hooke of the Royal Society. It is one of the earliest and most detailed European accounts of life on Ceylon and is today seen as an invaluable record of the island in the 17th century.

          Review the US Prohibition below.

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prohibition_in_the_United_States

Prohibition in the United States was a national ban on the sale, production, and transportation of alcohol, in place from 1920 to 1933.[1] The dry movement was led by rural Protestants in both political parties, and was coordinated by the Anti-Saloon League. The ban was mandated by the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution, and the Volstead Act set down the rules for enforcing the ban and defined the types of alcoholic beverages that were prohibited. Private ownership and consumption of alcohol was not made illegal. Prohibition ended with the ratification of the Twenty-first Amendment, which repealed the Eighteenth Amendment, on December 5, 1933.

The introduction of alcohol prohibition and its subsequent enforcement in law was a hotly debated issue. The contemporary prohibitionists presented it as a victory for public morals and health, but once the laws were passed they did little to help enforce them. The consumption of alcohol overall went down by half in the 1920s; and it remained below pre-Prohibition levels until the 1940s.[2]

Anti-prohibitionists (“wets”) criticized the alcohol ban as an intrusion of mainly rural Protestant ideals on a central aspect of urban, immigrant and Catholic everyday life. Effective enforcement of the alcohol ban during the Prohibition Era proved to be very difficult and led to widespread flouting of the law. The lack of a solid popular consensus for the ban resulted in the growth of vast criminal organizations, including the modern American Mafia, and various other criminal cliques. Widespread disregard of the law also generated rampant corruption among politicians and within police forces.

You messed up the meaning of Al Kahool and it’s inception . The word means “The stain” which expansively means the permanent stainer of life. The word was simply being used for the ladies’ ‘black eye stains’ which is applied around the brim of the eyelids used during the medieval time and continued to the present. Pointing out that consuming ‘Khamir’ or ‘Khumr’ is harmful to the commons’ health during the initial time of the propagation of Islam does not mean that they are the forefathers of fermented, rather they are warners on the subject of it’s toxicity to the health of the consumers. Al Kahool has nothing to do with Alchemy (Al Khamis) which was a personal noun of a Chemist of a later time.

Crimes are committed by people of all faith. Crimes have no relationship with any religion as all the religions have advice to abstain from it. Therefore, blaming a religion or a race for a crime is baseless and unjust. The relationship the crimes have are extreme poverty, greed, lust, hatred, jealousy, desires, grudge, racism, evil intention and etc.
I regretfully noticed, Mr. Ajith Kumara has tactfully associated the Muslim community for the Drug trafficking in Sri lanka while conveniently ignoring that large scale importers who are well known to the ordinary citizen of Sri lanka except for this ignorant ‘Ajith Kumara’.
In Sri Lanka, Muslims are the largest community that obey the Law and Order of the country because they have the lowest crime rates in comparison with the population proportionate. They have the lowest ‘Murderers, Robbers (Although they dwell in the city and urban townships), Gangsters, Contract Killers, Prostitutes, Kudu Kings, drunkards and Rapists are mostly non-Muslims. I am not trying to portrait the non- Muslim in general are bad or evil. Evil people of any religion can only be evil. Good people of any religion can only be good.
Muslims believe in an Almighty God and hereafter. They believe they have only a single-life and after death they will either go to hell or heaven according to the deeds. I believe, this is the main reason for muslims to abstain from sinful deeds. Whereas the non muslims except Christian and Jewish, believe in many lives and reincarnation. They do not believe in Hell or Heaven. Therefore, they fearlessly do things harmful to others without remorse. My Sinhala Buddhist friends get away from the mindset that teaches ‘Killing an insect or cattle is sin but killing a human is honour’.

          You total Idiot Fairoose

I never said that Buddhists are better than Muslims as no such statistics are available in public. How do you know that Muslims have the lowest crime rate? Bullshit. I said majority in any society is bad. Lord Buddha took a fistful of sand and said this much proportion compared to total earth only get good births after their death and rest is going to 1 of 4 hells (animal world, nonhuman and invisible pretha and yaksha worlds, Asura world and deep hell). So all your talk about Buddhism and their conducts and crime statistics are nothing but bullshit as Buddhists do believe in hell and heaven. But world knows Pakistan and Afghanistan is the source for narcotic drugs smuggled in to Asian countries.

The Climate of those countries suits well for the growth of the poppy seeds that were used as herbal medicine in the olden days. When modern world discovered the art of making heroine out the opium, the demand increase and the awareness of the health hazard and the dangers were exposed that made many countries to ban the narcotics and drugs. If Buddhist have ‘Hell and Heaven’, who manages it. I am sure it is not lord buddha. Go tell poppy stories to those believe your dogma and prostrate front of a ‘Stone-Statue’. Mr. Mza Zakky:

Buddhism is not a religion it is way of life. Buddhism is called Buddha Dhamma or Buddha’s doctrine. The word Buddhism and “it is a religion” are all westerners’ translation as those words are the closest what they have in their dictionary.

Anyway, as buddhism is a way of life and any other religion can follow it. We are certainly with you if you want to make Sri Lanka Alcohol and Drug free.

But, we can not agree to the concept that there is almighty which controls every thing.

Further Quran is a book that can be interpreted by the clarics the way they want to do. That is why there are many sects of Islam from peaceful groups to violent groups.

Buddhism varies only with respect to the final enlightenment. It is multifaceted. Buddhism also has the ability to get adapted to the individual culture. that is why there is Tibetan buddhism, Chen Buddhism and Zen Buddhism all of which are called Mahayana. Sri Lankan Buddhism has three sects all of which represent the first teacher – monk of the sect.

Remember when you we are against alcohol consumption, there is no buddhism or Islam there. We all are togetheer in that. Non-consumption of Alcohol should be a way of life.

Remember all the names given were by devotees of the later ages.

Buddhism is not a way of life at all!
Buddha could not find a reasonable solution to a very simple conflict – i.e. eating of meat. Buddha ate meat and his last meat was Pork! He wanted his followers also to eat meat. How could it be possible, without killing an animal? He says do not kill animals but eat meat. You mean to say this is what the way of life Buddha preached! Funny!

Thw most funny one is rebirth! Can a Buddhist show a single person in this world who has re-born to justify this shit philosophy?

Buddha never preached a uniform practice to his followers! The rituals and practices followed by Buddhists are invented by monks after death of Duddha – many Hundered of years later!

You are a coconut donkey not only stupid but blind also

Lord Buddha was a man who attained a state much more superior to god in his last life after spending billions of lives as all the kind of animals, gods and men/Wemen etc. in the 11 known worlds. He never asked to eat meat and the story of his last meal was pork is a hatred story fabricated by non-Buddhists. In many occasions the Lord Buddha had kept silence as idiots like you cannot understand or may misunderstand what he says or it leads to further complexity and/or words cannot explain it where only the self-perception could. You do not have to kill to consume meat or fish and eating or accepting such remains for your survival is not a sin. what you put out of your mouth (or write) may be a much bigger sin than what you take in it.

Lord Buddha has never said anything to believe in rebirth which means reappearance of the same person. What he said is Punar-Bava which says who is going to next lives is not him and not anybody else; that is, he gets a new life and new look immediately after his death in any of the 11 worlds (6 heavens, 4 hells and 1 human world) according to his past commitments. If you do not believe in this you can never find a reasonable answer to why you being so stupid among many wise men among CT posts alone (we, Buddhist suggest that it may be due to your being an alcoholic or associating only with idiots in this life and/or in all or some of your past lives).

By the way can you also prove (can anyone believe) the existence of a single god and his creation of the entire thing (who created him then) and ones birth in the hell or in haven or their existence in there after death according to the Gods sayings as non-Buddhists blindly believe those without questioning themselves.

Increase in alcohol consumption mainly due to tourism.

Very good if Muslims abstain from animal slaughter as stated in Buddhism. If Muslims work towards Nirvana it is even better.

Animal slaughter is a worse sin than alcohol use. It must stop first.

If you run naked like Archimedes shouting ‘Eurika’ it will be the act attaining the real word to word meaning Nivana. The word is derived from an archaic word ‘Aryaan’ meaning naked, meaning without clothes and assimilated to Indic vocabulary meaning ‘nothingness’.

So, if you attain Nirvana, you will dwell in a limbo of emptiness, into in nothingness, and like how you lived in this Sansara without a wisdom and heuristics but nourished with an artificial knowledge.

According to Islam, alcohol is haram, but smoking is okay. In fact, smoking is far worse (from a health perspective) than alcohol. Drinking a moderate amount of red wine everyday is even beneficial to cardiovascular health.

Just because few would do that means not that a large majority of muslims would do so. This should be common to every community on the other hand, but today, many among the buddhists in the country behave anti-buddhistic- but by the name of protection of buddhism. That should be stopped to save our peaceful buddhism that our grand ones protected for centuries.

Don’t fabricate lies Lester. Typical of you. On which, or whose authority you base the statement ‘According to Islam, alcohol is haram, but smoking is okay’. Please learn Islam in its true perspective, not from Islamophobia websites like all your other concocted views and assumptions, which invariably include anything to degrade the noble teaching of Islam. The true fact is that all intoxicants, habitual craving abusive drugs, anything that alters state of mind (even the mildest) are prohibited in Islam, except in isolated cases for purpose of medication, permitted in extremely small quantities. What you present here are Lester’s Law, not God’s Law.

Where does Quran say smoking is haram? Anyone who has been around Arab Muslims knows how much they smoke.

        • 0
          0

          @Lester,

Islam is a Revelation from Allah with a complete code of life. It tells what is good and what is evil: Allah says in the Holy Quran: And We have shown him (man) the two ways (good and evil). (Quran 90:10)

He allows them all that is good and lawful, and prohibits them as unlawful all that is evil (things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, drinks, etc.). (Quran 7:157)

So, is smoking (cigarettes, pipes, etc.) evil or not? Let us examine its effects:
          * Smoking is a killer: causes lung-cancer, lung-tuberculosis and heart diseases.
Allah says: And do not kill yourselves. (Quran 4:29)
He also says: And do not throw yourselves into destruction. (Quran 2:195)

These verses are sufficient to make smoking Haram.
          * Smoking is a wasting of wealth. Allah says: …But spend not wastefully (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift, Verily, spendthrifts are brothers of the devils, and the Devil (Satan) is ever ungrateful to his Lord. (Quran 17:26-27)

          * The smoker is unjust to himself as well as his family by burning away his money and his chest!
          * The smoker not only causes harm to himself, he/she also inflicts harms upon others around him/her.
The Prophet (p.b.u.h.) said: “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.” (Saheeh Al-Jami 7517)
          * The smokers cause the spread of evil; they smoke openly and thus encourage others to do the same.
          * The smokers dislike fasting and praying because they become impatient. They want to go for the next “round”. The smoker becomes like an edict.
          * The smoker smells bad! His car, home, clothes etc. carry the bad smell too.

From the above, it is clear that smoking is evil and thus it is Haram (unlawful). If you are under any kind of stress, then turn to Allah, read the Holy Quran, and be with non-smokers. Seek Allah’s help and don’t be enslaved to something that burns you and your money.

“Malaysia was divided and Singapore given independence because the Malaysian Parliament voted 126-0 to secede.”

Lol, really, you believe Malaysia seceded from Singapore??? Wouldn’t that be like China seceding from Hong Kong? :D Singapore was never a part of Malaysia, Heshan/Lester. We have been through this on Groundviews where your silly ignorance was exposed and ridiculed. Singapore joined the Malaysian Federation briefly, but was eventually expelled.

Don’t try to make up history the way you habitually do like when you claimed Hitler was victorious in WW2, that the US won the Vietnam War, and that North korea had been expelled from the UN :D

“If Muslims did not wish to be part of Malaysia or India, except as conquerors, what makes you think they will embrace a pluralistic Sri Lankan identity?”

Because they have embraced the SL identity for centuries and show no sign of rejecting it.

That is an interesting picture. It shows how advanced Sinhalese culture is compared to any Islamic society. How does a minority woman rationally protest against injustice by the majority community, when she practices a religion that forces her to dress in medieval garb? In other words, the woman in the abaya is already the victim of oppression.

If only! Vineyards are quite scenic, I would not mind. As for wine being beneficial to the health, there is a lot of good research on it.

Red wine, in moderation, has long been thought of as heart healthy. The alcohol and certain substances in red wine called antioxidants may help prevent heart disease by increasing levels of “good” cholesterol and protecting against artery damage.

        http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/red-wine/HB00089

Of course, this is not the only way to prevent heart disease. But for many busy people, it is probably easier than running 30 minutes a day, or lifting weights regularly.

This is what an American says about thought or imaginary crimes like flushing any book down a toilet:
Anyone who wants to draw a cartoon, write a novel, or stage a Broadway play that denigrates Mormonism is free to do it. In the United States, this freedom is ostensibly guaranteed by the First Amendment—but that is not, in fact, what guarantees it. The freedom to poke fun at Mormonism is guaranteed by the fact that Mormons do not dispatch assassins to silence their critics or summon murderous hordes in response to satire.
At this moment in history, there is only one religion that systematically stifles free expression with credible threats of violence. The truth is, we have already lost our First Amendment rights with respect to Islam—and because they brand any observation of this fact a symptom of Islamophobia.
Carrying a sign that reads “Behead Those Who Insult the Prophet” may still count as an example of peaceful protest, but it is also an assurance that infidel blood would be shed if those holding the placard only had their way.
This grotesque promise is, of course, fulfilled in nearly every Muslim society. To make a film like Innocence of Muslims anywhere in the Middle East would be as sure a method of suicide for the maker.
Here is where the line must be drawn and defended without apology: We are free to burn the Qur’an or any other book, and to criticize Muhammad or any other human being. Let no one forget it.
Imaginary crimes like blasphemy and apostasy should not be killing offenses.
Enlightened people in the Americas, Europe and other civilized countries can handle it. Others can not.

The writer should have focused on the general dangers of alcohol and drugs, rather than try to use the article as an excuse to display his knowledge of Buddhism and Islam.

Religion or otherwise, both alcohol and drugs are a social problem world-wide affecting those who follow religions/philosophies and those who are atheists and agnostics!

It would have made more sense if the writer suggested that all religious and community leaders closed ranks and came under one banner to combat this scourge.

@Lester who told u smoking is OK in Islam? Smoking is also haram as is alcohol.
There is no such thing as bigger sin, as the above commenter says slaughtering is a bigger sin than alcoholism. If so stop all animal slaughters including chickens and pigs.
    (Before that stop man slaughtering)
In that logic, even plants are living beings, and its been proved recently from a study that plants have FEELINGS. So lets be a better Bhudist by abstainning killing plants…..the foot of animals (stop eating up animals food)

BO TREE IS A TREE – WHICH IS THE ONLY LIVING TREE ON THIS EARTH,

KILLING BOTH ARE EQUALLY SIN – SOMTIMES, MAY BE (MUST ASK BUDDHA), KILLING A BO TREE IS WORST SIN THEN KILLING A CATTLE,

ALL THE OTHERS ARE NON-LIVING THINGS,

The consumption of alcohol pre-dates both Buddhism and Islam by several millennia – its origins date back to Mesopotamia to the cradle of civilization. Alcohol in the form of beer has saved many Million lives in Europe before germ theory was known, because the production process happens to kill the germs in the water that cause cholera, dysentery, etc. Breweries were the first to research modern cooling technologies such as refrigeration and air conditioning. Low alcohol consumption (such as a glass of wine with dinner or lunch) lowers LDL cholesterol and can boost creativity.

So I am going to go with the advice of the Buddha on this one and informedly reject to follow this particular tennet of his. As far as I know, he has never asked of anyone to be a fanatic, and he most certainly would afford how my actions in life affect other superior consideration to whether I drink tea of wine with my dinner.

This is where Buddhism and Islam show they main points of divergence: Mindful contemplation in the former, blind submission in the latter. I am saddened to see such a hardline sermon from someone who is attempting to explain Buddhism.

Very same way there are Muslims who strictly follow the Allah’s principles/doctrines and many do not. Behaviour of humans whether they are a Muslim, Buddhist or Christian varies.

There are many many divisions of Islam, predominantly Shia and Sunni. The wars in Middle eastern countries are as a result of such divisions. The writer is attempting to couple individual human behaviours with religion doctrines. This is completely wrong.

I think he is not aware of how the Arabs behave outside their territories, they behave like westerners when they holidaying in other countries.

    • 0
      0

How do you think Sri Lankans behave when they are out side Sri Lanka ? utter disgrace! Sri Lankan women become overnight call girls in any country they work (I am referring the bulk of them) I believe this due to freedom they experience when they go out of their home country so when arabs go out of their own domain they do the same.
Pls dont use your silly excuses to hide the actual problem.

What the writer says is the plain truth in respect to Sri Lanka. In our country we have a very big problem of alcoholism within the majority community Buddhist youth!
It is a menace to society.

When all of us accept there is a problem then we can try and find a solution, if we live in denial we will forever be the world highest alcohol consuming nation (Proportion to population) for many years to come.

      • 0
        0

Alcohol is not the problem. The problem lies in abusing alcohol, so you need to ask yourself, “What are the reasons that our young people engage in self-destructive behavior?” Once you fixed that, the availability of alcohol will be irrelevant.

There are many ropes around where I live. They are not the reason that people hang themselves. Stop looking for easy fixes that are not solutions!

Sri Lankan women become overnight call girls in any country they work

That is only your Islamic imagination. We know how Arab men treat women. Not just Buddhist girls. Most of the women on “death row” in Saudi Arabia are Indonesian. See here:

“More migrant workers are executed in Saudi Arabia than in any other country. According to human rights groups, more than 45 Indonesian women are on death row.”

Some here are arguing that smoking is haram in Islam. If that is the case, why are so many Muslims doing it? See the statistics below:

Total adult smokers of tobacco, rated through percentage of total adult smokers:

    1. Yemen 44.50%
    2. Turkey 44.00%
    3. Lebanon 40.50%
    4. Jordan 29.00%
    5. Israel 28.50%
    6. Cyprus 23.10%
    7. Iraq 22.50%
    8. Qatar 18.80%
    9. Kuwait 15.60%
    10. Bahrain 14.60%
    11. Oman 8.50%

As for approximate average number of cigarettes smoked per adult per year:

    1. Kuwait 3,062
    2. Turkey 2,394
    3. Bahrain 2,179
    4. Israel 2,162
    5. Jordan 1,832

However, if something is proved to be harmful to the user or if it may cause harm to others then MUSLIMS must avoid it, this is Islam! Just because Arabs are smoking cigarettes you can’t say Islam promotes smoking!

Lester you are so funny man.

You are producing nice statistics. with that stats you have come to conclusion Islam allows them to smoke.

Then Sri Lanka has become one of the Highest Liquor consuming country, now you can say Buddhism allows us to booze.

I know our Lord Buddha didn’t force to stop taking alcohol but he advise not to take alcohol and he further said problems taking place after taking Alcohol.

so Buddhism is not forcing but indirectly telling DON’T DRINK but we drink a lot. We are talking about stopping to kill bulls but we are not talking about Casinos, Massage centers etc

Nothing wrong with alcohol. Germans drink much more than Sri Lankans, and Germany is leading Europe. Even the German women are drinking. They have a festival called “Oktoberfest” where you just drink and drink. Better to have a festival like this than Eid al-Adha, where poor animals get their throats cut.

More examples of “science” from the Quran:

Forget about evolution. In the Quranic universe, man is created from clay :

We created man from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape; – Qur’an 15:26

Qur’an says the sun is smaller than the earth and assumes the sun goes to a black muddy pool:

“Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it set in a spring of murky water: Near it he found a People: We said: “O Zul-qarnain! (thou hast authority,) either to punish them, or to treat them with kindness.” – Qur’an 18:86

Quran says moon and the sun orbit the earth:

              “By the Sun and his (glorious) splendour;
By the Moon as she follows him;” – Qur’an 91:1-2-1

Quran says stars fall to the Earth! In fact, they explode.

“The stars are small enough to drop on us.
And when the stars fall” – Qur’an 81:2

A cousin of Muhammed, and expert on Quran, Tafsir Ibn Abbas, thought there are 7 planets:

“Allah is He who created 7 heavens one above the other like a dome, and of the Earths, the like thereof, 7 planets but they are flat”

I can give many more examples while Jamal, in agony, jumps up and down on his two-dimensional planar floor that was created by Allah in only 6 days! :)

He it is Who created the heavens and earth in Six Days Quran – Quran 11:7

Your brothers in the House of Saud do much worse than the Sinhalese Buddhist government. House of Saud travels abroad with suitcases full of hundreds of thousands of dollars. They enjoy foreign women, 5-star hotels, and the best nightclubs. House of Saud does not have to do any work to earn it’s money; they have foreigners to do everything. First, Buddhism does not forbid anyone in doing anything. It only suggest the better way. Islam on the other hand forbids drinking, and scares people about a hell. So buddhists, in the end of the day, do what they want to do in their lives, while muslims, don’t get to do what they want to do in livies, as they are forbidden and feared about a suffering in hell that is never proven to be in existence. A religion should only show the way, and should not dictate people what do to.

besides, you have given the percentages of people out of the sample, which adds upto 100%. that does not give any basis to compare. We don’t know whether equal number of people from each ethnicity was considered. So first learn what to do, before quoting things from reports. If you really want to compare, find percentage of people from each ethnicity that drinks.

A lot of people, including good friends of mine, mistake Lester for a Buddhist. In fact he is a hindu who has given up on religion because of the social treatments he received from some of the upper class elite who corrupted the religious teachings into creating untouchables; and hides behind a fake name and comments with sinhala buddhist chauvinist tone to help the haters snowball on verbally assaulting muslims and to sling more mud on buddhism in the end – two mangos in a single stone, as they say. his familiarity with buddhist teachings (except for those found on the internet), his silent support on LTTE activities, his borrowed ideas from indian hate-preacher websites and his pro-israeli rants are evidential. it’s sad that a lot of people still have to go through lester’s rants on CT and groundviews to learn his covert tactic. his is a shame for his people.

ask Lester to say here that LTTE were fascists, he wouldn’t be able to :) ask him to say that hinduism/shaivism is also mythology, according to his ‘vitamin D’ science as it is popular nowadays?

Guys there is some thing called a culture thing in every country. It is not a fixed thing, It starts by fluke then by luck it becomes a fashion then after couple of decades it becomes culture.

There is no guarantee any culture seen today will remain for ever, things changes but it goes in to history books at least.

In the few decades of bygone ear Sri Lanka has created culture of drinking Kasippu. So if you dont take swig of Kasippu then you care not a real Sri Lankan.

when you are in Rome be like a Roman. Now are you ready to be a true blue Sri Lankan ?

Religious rules are often artificial, they cannot account for every set of circumstances. Alcohol is a stimulant that loosens the senses. When people go for relaxation, they try to loosen the senses. This is normal human behaviour. As long as it is done in moderation, there is no harm.

Drinking alcohol is better than slitting an animal’s throat.

Much ado about nothing. Armchair pundits splitting hairs about things they KNOW NOTHING about.

All religion is SPECULATION pure and simple.

Relax and watch a science fiction movie. At least U will learn something useful :)

There is a beautiful image and a verse in the religion of peace website.

It has an image of a man cleaning a spiteful graffiti on a UK air force building.

“As the pattern emerges across Europe, the real problem becomes harder to whitewash.”

How true not just across Europe but also in SL.
