‘My life Is Under Threat’ Says Fonseka

Colombo, June 10 (IANS) Former Sri Lankan army chief Sarath Fonseka, who was recently released from prison, Sunday said his life is under threat and he needs to be provided with tighter security.

The country’s first four-star general said he has been provided with a security contingent by the government but it was not enough, Xinhua reported.

Fonseka

Police said the former army chief has been provided with 15 officers from the Ministerial Security Division following a request by Fonseka’s associates.

However, Fonseka said he was not satisfied with the security, and he needs more based on threats he faces.

Fonseka led the army against the Tamil Tigers during the final years of the three-decade-long civil war that resulted in the defeat of the rebels in May 2009.

In April 2006, Fonseka survived an assassination attempt when a woman suicide bomber blew herself up near his car inside the military headquarters in the capital Colombo.

Fonseka sustained injuries in the attack that killed nine people, including his security personnel.

The relationship between Fonseka and the government became strained after he retired from the military in late 2009 and announced his candidature for the presidential elections.

Fonseka contested as the leader of an opposition coalition but lost the election to incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

He was later arrested and jailed over various charges including illegal arms deals, harbouring army deserters and making allegations to the media that soldiers had shot unarmed rebel cadres.

Fonseka was freed from prison last month on a presidential pardon but still faces trial in a case involving harbouring of army deserters.

The trial for Fonseka and his personal assistant Senaka Haripriya de Silva will begin June 21.

Didn’t Fonseka also say the following in an
    interview with National Post:

“I strongly believe that this country belongs to the Sinhalese but there are minority communities and we treat them like our people,” he says. “We being the majority of the country, 75%, we will never give in and we have the right to protect this country.“We are also a strong nation … They can live in this country with us. But they must not try to, under the pretext of being a minority, demand undue things.” General Fonseka,

    Native Veddah,

Are you suggesting Sarath F is asking for “undue things’ he warned Tamils not to. After all “this good Buddhist” is now “a very educated man” He has studied some pages of a book on Hitler.

Phew! What sort of jokers are at the helm of our political life in a form of governance where even the Public Trustee himself is being investigated. That must be the giddy limit anywhere.

The only thing good about him is that he didn’t hide his spots.

I hate to admit that this disgraced former general does not mince words, unlike the other professional politicians. He means what he says and says what he means. You and I may not like this potential dictator, but you get what you see a potential dictator, not an eel like creature.

We have about 16 million Sinhala/Buddhists in this island sadly I am yet to meet a “good Buddhist”.

      You are exactly right. Brovo!!!!!

SF sounds exactly like your pro-LTTE TNA goons. They all are also cry-babies and all chane like weather in the Bay of Bengal. Is it anything to do with the movement pattern of moon?

It is sad and pathetic to see and hear that Fonseka’s life is being threatened by his own people, and former friends.
Has this something to do with “Bad Karma”.
    Living in Fear !!!!

May be he should come to United States using his green card.

But US too would conduct War Crimes investigations against their own citizens and residents… That will be another headache??/
But it is better than getting white vanned or killed on the streets of Colombo like Lasantha or Maj. Gen. Janaka Perera.

His own body guards may turn the guns on him. He should be extra careful.

It appeares to me that SF was released on agreement with MR, SF Will Not going to be a threat to MR Any more. Asking more security is a part of the drama. you can see when things unfold

What’s the big deal about providing solid protection to a man who was nearly killed no less than 4 times by LTTE monkeys?

You and I can walk the streets of our country in peace thanks largely to men of General Fonseka’s calibre.

Sri Lanka please provide the national hero, the protection he rightfully deserves and needs.

      Ben

You made a very good point about General SF. After the roller-coaster-ride that he experinced over last two years, he should stay from bloody SL politics.

No doubt, General Fonseka is one of the best commanders that we show in last decades or so. Unfrotunately he was mislead by UNP and JVP loosers right at the good time.

He should not be crying in Public on issues but live like a real lion.

I hate to agree with you.

He should be sent to African jungle if he were to live like a real lion. When he goes please advise him to take the rest of the lions with him too.

If it is too expensive to relocate please put him in zoo behind cage.

The island should be a country for humans, not suitable for lions nor for tigers.

Let the people of the island live like humans.

          Dear Mark

          I applaude your humanism.

However, your theory of humanism is just academic in Sri Lanka’s case. In our battle with the cunning and ruthless LTTE, not applicable at all. Four rounds of rogue peace overtures over 30 years have proven that point beyond any doubt.

Hitler was defeated in a bloody military struggle at last. There was no other way. Otherwise all surviving humans on the planet would be speaking German, by now.

Treatment meted out by General Fonseka to ethno-nationalistic pyscopats of the LTTE was the only option available to Sri Lanka. Very unfortuante, but true. Hope such things will never happen in our land again.

Long live the humane Sri Lankan nation.

This man was a part of this Mahinda´s brutal instrument and he killed jounalists, civilians and political opposition members.

In terms of minorities he has expressed his clear views as Native Vedda mentioned. He is not matured enough to find a sustainable peace solution.

A constitutional democratical state is not in his mind, his aim is to come to power to use the same methods like Gota and MR.

As a victim of MR regime we expressed our sympathy, but we can not support his political career. He has to change his views.

All these politicians and their extream sinhala nationalist chauvinistic views create a plattform for the next conflict and give space for Tamil nationalism

We are far away from a United SL

    Ben Hurling says:

“Otherwise all surviving humans on the planet would be speaking German, by now.”

Now that Sinhala/Buddhists state had won the war all surviving humans on the island would be speaking Sinhala.

    You say:

” Four rounds of rogue peace overtures over 30 years have proven that point beyond any doubt.”

Sixty four years of Sinhala/Buddist undemocratic state rule created the Sinhala terrorists JVP and Tamil terrorists LTTE.

When did the state and its rulers seriously attempt to solve any issues small or big? The state and its rulers have been in the business of creating more problem than they ever were interested in solving the existing ones.

Now that the LTTE is no longer a military threat what is it preventing the state to deal with the democratically elected Tamil leaders although the war came to an end three years ago?

    Good faith???
