President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s plans of appointing people to government posts on meritocracy hit a stumbling block, when the Rajapaksa super brats MP Namal Rajapaksa and Rohitha Rajapaksa had their respective Father-in-Law and Mother-in-Law appointed as Directors to the Airport and Aviation (Services) Sri Lanka Limited.
Unbeknownst to many, MP Namal Rajapaksa’s Father-In-Law Thilak Weerasinghe Chairman Lanka Sportreizen (LSR) and Rohitha Rajapaksa’s Mother-in Law Deirdre De Livera were appointed earlier as Directors of Airport and Aviation (Services) Sri Lanka Ltd.
The former beach boy Thilak Weerasinghe was a wind surfer who went on to win the National Wind Surfing Championships in Colombo before teaming up with a German tourist to start off his company now known as Lanka Sportsreizen (LSR).
Meanwhile according to Rohitha Rajapaksa’s (Chichi) Mother-in-Law Deirdre De Livera’s profile, it is stated that she is a Business Development Specialist at EXEL Holdings (Pvt) Ltd. She started off as an airline executive with Delmege Air Services (Pvt) Ltd.
To cap it all off the the post of Chairman Airport and Aviation (services) was accorded to the former Northern Province Governor Major General (Rtd.) G.A. Chandrasiri .
According to an article published in the Daily FT the appointed Chairman G.A. Chandrasiri openly confessed that he had no experience in his appointed role but was keen to learn on the job. (By Dasun Jayakody)

Thilak Weerasinghe is a tourism industry veteran and has been involved with the trade for more than 20 years. He has the largest fleet of tourist vehicles and is the owner of many hotels in the country. He has hotels all over the country. He is also the franchise holder for the SRI Lanka marathon which has become an annual event in the local calendar sand attracts many overseas runners.
Very happy to see some one like Thilak getting involved with the Airport Authority since the BIA is a total mess now and an eye sore to every tourist coming to the country.

Dear Lankan,

No, it’s not all right. Even if he is a success, it is nepotism. There may well be others with equal abilities, and with equal or better qualifications. Certainly, the objections will lose force if he has all the experience that is listed by Nimal Perera.
.
The problem is that our citizens seem always to look for excuses to do nothing. I exposed corruption in this article:
.
https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/some-thomian-pharisees-are-adamant-on-the-need-to-cheat/
.
One of my closest relatives was involved, and for years I had asked others to take it up. When I finally wrote it, you will find that the “Establishment” has not defended it, but many of my so-called friends didn’t comment, implying that it was “reverse nepotism”! There must be some hidden reason why I must have written it.
.
Read it, and judge for yourself. Going by your arguments, with theirs added, nothing will ever be objected to by the cowards of Sri Lanka.

I’m sorry that I’ve been rather harsh on you; I’m sure that you are a decent enough guy.

Do we have to start worrying?
/
Sinhala_Man / January 11, 2020
Dear Native Vedda,
.
I’m doing what I can, but there are limits to what can be achieved before I finally kick the bucket. Yes, I’ve listened to the half hour that you’ve prescribed for me. However, let me confess that I haven’t read “Brave New World” and I’m unlikely to do so, because at this stage of my life, I find myself reading very few full-length books.
.
I do know what the book is about, of course. I hadn’t even read Orwell’s novel, 1984. Then in that very year (1984), I found myself in Peradeniya as an undergraduate, with both novels in the reading list. So, I read the Orwell novel. It required greater effort than his delightful “Animal Farm”. I’m glad I read through both Orwell works.
.
The following year we actually produced, full-length, Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”, which is where the title of the Huxley novel came from. Anyway, now playing in the background is this (half an hour already) more recent comparison of the two novels.
.

What you gave me – amazingly relevant. Thanks.
.

Native Vedda,
I’m not going to say much about this particular appointment b’cos enough is already written about potential nepotism under a MaRa/GoRa regime. The excuse behind the nepotism is the trustworthiness but in real world, the most likely outcome of nepotism is corruption. Therefore, no matter what Gora has in his mind, the final results won’t be any different from pre-2015! These kinds of appointments are the things to be expected; not surprises. Public should be ready to expect more of these as time goes.
–
Aldous Huxley, the grandson of famous T H Huxley, could have develop a better explanation on the tendency for nepotism had he followed his grand fathers’s work on the Theory of Evolution which was developed by his friend Darwin (Even though Huxley defended the theory ferociously to earn the nick name Darwin’s Bull Dog, he didn’t agree with every aspect of Darwin’s version. For example, Huxley didn’t agree with strong version of Darwin’s gradualism. Unfortunately, Aldous’s brother Julian Huxley, who also became one of the contributing evo biologists to the Modern Synthesis version of Darwin’s theory via his epochal 1942 book, Evolution: The Modern Synthesis, failed to follow grandfather’s insight). In my comments to various columns, I did try to explain the tendency for corrupt behavior like nepotism in evolutionary terms.

Dear Native Vedda
Great that you gave SM the website for the Huxley interview. And, lucky for me, it comes with subtitles. Though I’d quite like to hear Huxley speaking, so I will listen to the rest if it tomoro once I have hearing aids in.
For some years in the 60s and 70s I lived very near the Huxley family’s house in Hampstead. Passed it almost every day. I think Julian was living there at that time. And in the 80s I met a SL woman who had worked for them in that very house, as a sort of companion.
Hampstead was a fascinating place to live, lots of interesting people, some of whom one met very easily, often in the pubs. Talking of literature, I met William Empson (of “Seven Types of Ambiguity” fame) in one where he used to play darts. And Peter O’Toole lived near the top of the hilly street on which the Huxley’s house was at the bottom. John Keats’ house was in another street close to mine. After I came to SL I learnt that Eric Hobsbawm, the Marxist historian, had moved into a house opposite the one I lived in.
Sorry, the Huxley interview set off a trail of irrelevant — to this CT article — memories.
Sorry, one more memory before I give way — my English landlord, Miles Tomalin, fought in the Spanish Civil War with the Republicans and a book I have of Civil War poetry has a poem by him. His son Nick, a journalist, wasnt so lucky. He was killed while reporting on the first US war against Iraq. But Miles was a lovely man and always came round with wine for us at New Year.
Ah, those were good times.

She’s led a most interesting life, and has known so many people. They were some of the best people we ever had.
.
That’s not a pseudonym that she uses but won’t let on to all of what she’s once been. If you google, you’ll find out. In a sense, she has the simplicity of a child. She’s also a committed socialist, and will be fighting chauvinism with her last breath. It’s worth paying attention to her.
.
It is true that there is much that some of us could contribute, but we just can’t do much more than we now are. She didn’t want to comment on my article because her late husband and she just never like that “Old Boy” stuff and had never joined OBAs and OGAs. Like Prof. Kumar D., in that respect. Yes, I think that I can empathise with her on such matters. And yet that old school had so much to offer. They wanted me to take full charge of Mt Lavinia in 1990 (as Warden) but then one governor who now apologises to me, opposed it since I acknowledged that I did not have perfect Christian faith. Many things would have been very different had that happened.

Now the problem is that I’m not happy with that tinge of snobbery that goes with all those Old Boy Clubs. There I could have made a real contribution at the level of sophistication that the State Schools do not offer. It’s difficult to fight relative personal poverty and work in that rarefied atmosphere at one and the same time. The guys in charge there have never been averse to imagining that the end justifies the means. I wonder if you are aware of how they came to appoint a good man without a bit of “required qualification, Read up about Eksith Fernando and the Supreme Court Cases involving the school. I just don’t know how to get these present fellows to understand how to preserve what is of value. What happens in a place like that does cause ripples which affect even the village.

I wonder if all the negative & evil things the younger generation today sees are any more than we saw in our time. True, in the political sphere, we may remember some upright, able & qualified people in parliament who were a far cry from most of the types that represent us now.
But my ghastly memories of communal violence in this country go right back to my childhood when I first came to Ceylon & witnessed the 1958 riots. Incidentally, living on the Peradeniya campus then, I was also shocked by the ragging (which people are only now realising should be banned), the humiliation that even female undergrads subjected freshers to. I was laughed at by girls I knew in a hall we lived next door to, when I expressed horror at what they were doing.

But I share yr love of Dickens, ws buried in him from about the age of 5 after the war in London. I think he probably sowed the seeds of a social conscience in me. But it’s years now since I read him. And Greene, too, tho he came a bit later. Talking of his support for Latin Americans, I am just recovering a trilogy I lent a friend about 5 years ago: Memory of Fire by Eduardo Galeano. If you dont know it, look it up. To tell you, this is an another heated weekend for me, just after reading about the unethical appointments being again given their men within their circles,, I question why on earth people nevertheless support them ? Shameless “once upon high criminals that are now held as pepole’s heroes” would do anything, their supporters do nothing but behave as dogs barking while caravan moves forwad. That is typcial to lanken culture. They the people dont care about anything today. They dont even raise the question why the daily needs and their price hikes , but be busy about the TAPEs of Ranjan Ramanayaka leaked to the Social media ?

People incl. my relatives in the fools# paradise to whom I may have gifted SMART phones lately, too, have become Rajapakshe supporters. I became so furious, but it is the trend within the country. Even criminals are used to say, ” Buduarnayi” while they continue their criminal activities in an routine manner. I can explain them loads of truths with provable figures, but changing their way thinking attitude is effortless. They the average down there would not respect truths but mostly “hearsays” and what two abusive TV channels (Derana TV and Hiru TV) spread within the country.

Day before yesterday, I was very much angered by watching some Rajakashe criminal supporters not having invited former President CBK in the commemoration ceremony held in colombo but CBK had herself arrived in there with her elder sister and knelt down before the statue as usual and added her sad thoughts to the press about not being invited to the ceremony.

Most dont care about the facts about Rajakashes. They just see otherway around when truths being spread on them. According to them for no reasons Rajakshes were called for court investigations.

Even if PRIMA FACIE evidence revealed and reported in media regarding the state FUND abuses made by Gotabaya in the build of MONUMENT to commemorate their deseased parents- whole lot of VOTERs from southern areas, never took it to heart.
–
People s awareness is being abused by Rajakshes on and on. They are very concerned about the NEWs items, any BLANT lies in favour of them would be put to air through their biased TV channels on and on.
:
I question, why NO YET prevailing laws CONTROL these two channels. If they dont have appropriate provisions in prevailing laws to control them, why law makers in Opoosition then and today stay further silent ?
–
I dont think if any TV channel in UK would abuse their media freedom regarding late Princess Diana’s Harry not respecting Queen elibsabath family traditionAs is the case in CURRENT day srilanka, LEGAL authorities to let any TV channels to spread blatant lies but in favour of vicious politics – no means possible in Germany for example. Why our oppostion leaders dont make effort to bring reforms to control lanken media channels, within internationally held norms ?

Those people in Wellawaya and Buttala seem to live in yet unspoilt areas. Why isn’t that being stressed? What effort is being made to ensure that they are able to earn themselves a better living?

I truly believe that most of them are an another network that abuse pvt funds being offered to them by expatriate srilankaens. I also donate regularly to some schools, but I will check them closely next time on.

So call TV channels mushroom in the country today. I know not only at Wellawaya and Buttala, but there are whole lot of people in Anuradhapura and southern areas live under poverty. Most of them are not accessed to any means of income. I wonder what the govts did to them sofar. Why not these people are kept away from SAMURDHI ?
.
I myself cant add my thoughts to them now, because GOOGLE has blocked my account for some reasons. I believe that Iraj weeraratne, an another key asskisser of Rajakashe clan, may have complained to GOOGLE:

As you know the donators in general cant know all the bits about the Channels because they just make their transfers being out of the country.

“Nearly 7 million Sinhala Buddhists are screwed. !!!!”
From the time the Paras accepted Para-“Buddhism” ‘ with the Triple Gem and Monk Hegemony, they were screwed. (The first 6 kings escaped this) . The Sinhala Buddhists are prostrating to the monks, for monk hegemony, and they still do not know that the have been screwed, by the illusion of Nibbana and Nirvana.
Their current mean IQ, estimated from measured data is 78. There is a hypothesis floating around that prostration to monks decreases critical thinking and reasoning abilities, leading to decreasing IQ’s.

Nepotism has been a curse in Sri Lanka for a while now and was rife especially during MR’s time in office; now with SLPP back in the saddle after a brief interlude, it will not go away anytime sooner. This whole thing of appointing only those qualified to run State owned enterprises, was aimed at those dumb SLPP voter base to make them believe that things will be different this time round. Going by these appointments so early in GR-MR tenure, Sri Lanka could possibly be revisiting the pre 2015 period all over again! Let’s hope that the days ahead do not transpire that way, but optimism in this paradise isle is something that is a hard to come by!!

These ‘Para’ Demalu are not welcomed in Sinhale.
/
jayt / January 15, 2020
If call Tamil ” Para’ Demalu ” It directly hurt .Rajapackses. First Rajapakses are multi racial and religious family. They have Tamil brothers in laws. Rajapkses ‘ original family root is Chinese Mongolians brought to Sri lanka. by Portuguese or Dutch and later supported by British. And look at other leaders in Sri lanka, they all have Tamil relatives behind them and they are related to Malays who brought to Sri lanka by British to kill Sinhalese Buddhists.
I admire your patriotism, but if you are true patriot, get rid of these foreigners who took Sinhalese names during colonial period. Srilanka has nearly or over 18 million Sinhalese Buddhists to chooses from and establish a genuine Sinhalese Buddhists government. Why you have to up with fake pride.
Tamil Tigers in the Western countries are laughing at Sinhalese because they are know to the World as Modayas. For example, Sinhalese don’t know in a few years Tamil automatically can increase hair population and can get control over Sri lanka by coming behind families like Rajapackses.
Tamil Tigers’ goal is destroying Sinhalese Buddhists identity. It is discussed all over Europe and North America by Tigers’ Western supporters . So, Rajapakses are foundation for that.
It is also, backed by Sinhalese spies who have been secretly promoting Rajapackses and now openly switched from RW to Rajapackses. Before election, They were playing trick on Sinhalese Modayas and speared as strong anti Rajapakses. It was huge trick they played to bribe Sinhalese Mondays to be sympathetic to Rajapackses and make them win

It’s very unfortunate that this article is trying to show Thilak in a poor light. I have absolutely no doubdt that Thilak’s appointment to the board of AASL is the most appropriate. LSR is the third-largest inbound travel company in Sri Lanka, but also the undisputed No 1 travel company specializing in adventure sports. He has been instrumental in putting Sri Lanka in the sports tourism map by bringing international events in Surfing, Cycling, Running (Colombo Marathon) and white water rafting. LSR is also the Srilankan Airlines appointed agent to handle all the transit passengers since year 2004, and was appointed when Emirates was managing Srilankan Airlines and has handled this ever since. There is no doubt that Bandaranaike International Airport needs a major overhaul and capacity enhancement to handle future growth in tourism. There is no better person than Thilak who has a better knowledge of both these areas to have been appointed to the Board of AASL.
I have worked with Thilak closely for over 18 years on tourism promotions and know him as a humble, accommodating yet visionary and determined person who loves Sri Lanka and worked tirelessly to uplift the tourism industry in Sri Lanka during the darkest years of our country. I wish to congratulate Thilak on his appointment and I have no doubt that he will show his mettle in helping transform the Colombo Airport to what it should be, in the near future.

Wow Mohan so nice to see you making a noise in this regard.
If Thilak has all these credentials he should be in the Ministry of Tourism instead of AASL.
A classic case of a square peg in a round hole.
Whilst your at it would you also please tell us how you ended up being posted to Singapore as the Sri Lankan Airlines Country Manager ?
Perhaps we may have to seek that answer from the former Chairman Nishantha Wickrememasinghe if you are reluctant to say so.
As for Diedre de Livera’s appointment, have you got anything to say about that or are you happy that she and her family can also enjoy all the perks that come with the post. Absolutely no credentials to hold any post as a Director AASL?

Wowowow! Chairman of Airport and Aviation (services) Mr. G.A. Chandrasiri is keen to learn on the job??
*Sigh* at this rate the general public will have to put up with truck loads of trials and errors from these so called “L – board CEOs and Chairmans”.. so i suppose “Learning things on the job” was the system change that Gota was referring to on he’s campaign trail..

Thushan, Never knew that there are employers who are willing to appoint heads out of trades and pay big bucks and benefits just to make them learn the skills for how long?
Not only that Chandrasiri is double dipping to treasurry funds as he must be already receiving a fat pension as a Maj. Gen.
Gota has stopped all State OTs. Hope he also prevents Chandrasiri receiving Pay &Pension.

The slave mentality of frogs stuck in a deep well is predictable. They do the same thing over and over but expect a different result.
Once again, it is a great opportunity for a known bunch of thieves to not only quietly rob the country, but also to ensure that the frogs stay firmly stuck in the well, forever.
Dear frogs, don’t even think of coming into politics, unless you have a few billions in your bank account.

I was quite surprised to see the unfair accusation leveled against a respected lady and a gentleman, based on their relationship to Rajapaksha’s. from the outset what these hate articles suggest “if you are friends or relatives of Rajapaksha’s; Wickramasinghe’s or any other politician they should not hold any public office ???” its not only absurd but creates a wrong perception of our country whereas even in the USA (Trump or Bush) it’s the close friends and family that holds vital positions of a regime and it’s their ability to perform in that job role that matters nothing else. His knowledge on the workings of inside ‘mafia’ of the airport and aviation would have made few people nervous, and I hope he will step in to correct those.
Thilak whom I know personally, hence this long article. He established his organization in 1982 after having qualified as a certified trainer in Switzerland and Austria. He is not a beachboy but he gave wind surfing lessons on the beach ! Lanka Sports Rizen is the only water sports specialized tour operator in this country. Not only that he sponsored almost all annual international events, Colombo Marathon for 18 years, Surfing events in Hikkaduwa and in Arugambay from 2001, International Mountain Biking Events from 2016 – he initiated these at the time of separatist war, Tsunami etc; just to put Sri Lanka in the International map and promote tourism. For him who was in power didn’t matter the intention was to commit his own resources and to promote the country. I can tell you he is the only person who did so at that scale. LSR also has many PADI certified diving schools from the east to the south.

It is shameful how people justify nepotism and political patronage. These people are the main obstacle to the success of GOTA. None of the qualifications stated above are good enough for the job. It is also funny the US is used as a standard to justify the appointments in Sri Lanka. Please do not try to food those with sound knowledge about the relations between these appointees and the government. What is happening to viathmaga.

Remember the words enshrined and said from the “Thrown”: – ” Although I don’t wear the “Kurahan Satakaya”, what it represents is in me”. Doesn’t it convey what is “IN WAITING”? Just be ready to receive what you , perhaps didn’t ask for.

The idiot who wrote this artical Dasun Jayakody does not know what Tilak has done for Sri Lanken Tourisum. He referes to Tilak as a Beach Boy , in an insulting way. so why not? Tilak never hid his begginings from anybody. Wenn you imagine that the majority of our MP don´t even have OLevels and are runing the country.
Well done Tilak. wish you all the best.

Roshan G,
Please reveal the facts about Thilak Weerasinghe. Besides, educational back grounds donot do that much
–
We know how they keep OXFORD educated GLP under them as house arrest. These men though got their qualifications at prestigious unis, would never have guts to work free. That has lot do with srilanken abusive mentality.
If the neighbour would lick the balls of an idiot, no doubt, without hesitations, you too join the line to go for it. Not long ago, 2 months ago, Kelaniya Temple Chief monk made a public statement misleading all the buddhist worshippers about ” RELICS”. How many of you guys, went after him and paid respect to ” that forged relics”?
