Prof S. Ratnajeevan H. Hoole
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner is Navaneetham (aka Navi) Pillay for her efforts to promote peace, international law, and human rights. She is a South African jurist born into a family of Indian Tamil origin.
As India Today (9 Oct. 2026) notes, she is a South African jurist born into a family of Indian Tamil origin. Hers was a simple family with the father being a Durban Bus Driver. She overcame much, having once been banned from the chambers of South African judges because of her skin color.
For the young, she is a most appropriate role model – very much unlike US President Donald Trump. She is a former Head of the UN Human Rights Commission and many other things.

Navanethem Pillay during a press briefing on Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Occupied Palestinian Territory in June 2022. Photo: UN Photo/Jean Marc Ferré
UN Secretary General António Guterres says Navi Pillay has been “a steadfast, independent voice of justice amidst some of the most historic international legal cases of our time”.
He lists examples including defending Nelson Mandela and others against the Apartheid regime, working on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda amid the 1994 genocide, and her role chairing the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
Guterres says that Pillay has shown “the force of law must prevail over the law of force” in her work and says Pillay has shown “defending human rights is the surest safeguard against injustice”.
Ironically – indeed shamelessly — President Donald Trump canvassed for the Nobel Peace Prize for himself. The Nobel Prize can be shared by the Nobel Committee with up to three people at the time of award but cannot be after its award – the money (set at 12 million Kroners in Swedish currency equivalent to about US$1.2 million – of course can be given away by the awardee but that does not make the one getting the money a Nobel Laureate.
How can a war-monger ever even be contemplated for the Nobel Peace Prize?
The Nobel Committee in a slap on Trump’s face awarded the prize to Navi Pillay. The US now threatens the international legal system arguing that Americans cannot be prosecuted by outside bodies, because America is not a signatory to the Rome Treaty and therefore does not come under the International Criminal Court – just as Barrack Obama always prefaced his reports on his miitary operations saying no American lives were lost, exposing the racism inherent to the Americn systen, now more forcefully brought out by Trump.
Alfred Arulanandam. CPA, at Global Management Consultants in Mississauga, Ont, announced to the Tamil Community, “Proud to be a Tamil Always – Navi Pillay Wins the Nobel Peace Prize.” She is the fourth in a line of Tamils to be recognized by the Nobel Committee for their significant contributions to humanity.
Out of 9 Indians (11 if the Dalai Lama and Mother Theresa are counted as some do), 4 are of Tamil ethnicity. It is a huge achievement that naturally makes those like Alfred Arulanandam proud. The first Indian to win a Nobel Prize was Rabindranath Tagore (1913, Literature).
Hanif Vally is the Chief Executive of South Africa’s Foundation for Human Rights and played a major role in the Truth and Reconcilation Commission there, often cross-examining those with whom he had been incarcerated. He has worked closely with Navaneetham Pillay. He is proud of her work. As Africa’s Mail and Guardian (5 Dec. 1997) puts it, Vally’s political teeth were cut in the black consciousness tradition, and he served as president of the Black Students’ Society in the Seventies. Never one for the politics of ethnicity, he disagreed with members of the Transvaal Indian Congress. It is ironic then that this long-time player in the politics of black consciousness should have been the frontline defender of the truth commission when Ntsiki Biko, the widow of Steve Biko – the father of black consciousness – challenged the commission.
One can understand their anger – anger at their loss and the lack of punishment – but amnesty is a compromise. It is a foundation stone of our democracy that there will be no impunity.
No wonder that the Sinhalese were upset by the 2011 UN Panel of Experts report on Sri Lanka. The word Tamil seems to set off the Sinhalese. Theycondemned that Darusman Report without seeing it. The three-member panel consisted of Marzuki Darusman (Indonesia) – Chair, Yasmin Sooka (South Africa) and Steven Ratner (United States). They found credible reports of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by both the Sri Lankan government forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during the final stages of the civil war in 2009.
Yasmin Sooka of South Indian origin was raised in South Africa. She is ethnically a Tamil as reflected by her father’s distinctly Tamil name, Narayanaswamy Rathinasamy. Her surname Sooka is from her Gujarati husband settled in South Africa. She shares much in heritage with Navi Pillay.
Her Tamilness raised Sinhalese hackles. The communalist thinking which seems to affect even the NPP government is that, what a Tamil says about Sinhalese guilt in war crimes or genocide cannot be trusted but what the Sinhalese themselves say is Gospel Truth. This is why we need an international inquiry against Sri Lanka.
Well before the Darusman Report was released, the Bar Association condemned the report, presumably having seen the copy sent to the Sri Lankan government for observations. Those were dangerous times for Tamils including Tamil legal stalwarts. The Darusman report was condemned unanimously by the Bar Association without seeing the report. I reported that Neelakandan voted for the Bar Association’s resolution condemning the UN Report and Sivapalan testified at the LLRC against the LTTE (Hoole, “Do not take the Tamils to be fools,” (The Sunday Leader, 31 July 2011). My condemnation of the Bar Association’s criticism (“Complaints against the Ban Ki Moon Panel,” Daily Mirror, 4 June, 2011) seems to have been censored in the archives of the Daily Mirror.
At the time, I was on the board of the Noolaham archives and I wrote about how the army barged into our meeting in Jaffna. My article appeared in many places. The Noolaham Board panicked that my complaint would be used to punish Noolaham. Since then I seem to have been removed from the Board. Such is the bravado of Tamil leaders.
We Tamils live in Sri Lanka where we do not know when communalist laws will be activated like Damocle’s Sword or even the press censorship laws will be invoked to imprison us because someone claimed in a police complaint that he or she was offended. These horrible laws to entrap minorities must go, not smuggled in again through bogus ongoing revisions.
In her 2013 Aug. Press Conference in Colombo, Navi Pillay stated that Ministers and commentators repeatedly invoked her ancestry. In Colombo, Pillay said that for several years “media, ministers, bloggers and various propagandists” in Sri Lanka had, “on the basis of my Indian Tamil heritage”, described her as a tool of the LTTE, in their pay and the “Tamil Tigress in the UN”. This was “not only wildly incorrect, it is deeply offensive”, she said, adding that at least three ministers had joined in [the chorus] during the week of her visit.
“Firstly, let me say, I am a South African and proud of it,” she said. She went on to note that her only previous visit to Sri Lanka had been to attend a commemoration of Neelan Tiruchelvam, who was killed in 1999.
The NPP governmnt is moving in the right direction charging many criminals. Yet there are others who say the exercise is to eliminate Sinhalese politicians who can mount a challenge at the next elections. The true intention of the government would be laid bare only when they charge Sinhalese war criminals who killed Tamils. To get Tamil votes, the NPP must move decisively and definitively against the military people who killed innocent civilians. Will it?
As for Trump’s threats against the ICC, banks seem reluctant to give money to the ICC and the Nobel Committee. Marco Rubio the American Secretary of State is going gung-ho amplifying these threats about prosecuting Americans. The world fears trumps who carries the nuclear codes with him.
Reed Brody trashed the idea that Americans can be prosecuted only by the US and not the ICC. Brody is a Hungarian-American human rights lawyer and former prosecutor. He served as counsel and spokesperson for Human Rights Watch (1998–2016), director of the International Commission of Jurists’ Centre for the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, and worked with the UN in El Salvador and the Democratic Republic of Congo. His experience covers
1. Lead Counsel for the victims of Chad’s former dictator, Hissène Habré, leading to his historic 2016 conviction for crimes against humanity in a hybrid tribunal in Senegal.
2. Getting Chilean Dictator Augusto Pinochet arrested in London in 1998.
3. Worked with victims seeking justice against Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier (Haiti), Yahya Jammeh (Gambia), and on investigations regarding Nicaragua and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
His book To Catch a Dictator: The Pursuit and Trial of Hissène Habré (2022) has earned him the nickname in the media as “Dictator Hunter.”
As the Toronto Star commented (4 Nov. 2013), “Victors, as always, write the requiems. […] It was ‘a war without witnesses.’ Colombo made sure of that.”
However, the Tronto Star is wrong. There is planty of other evidence of Sri lankan complicity in war crimes. It is based on it that Canada and the UK have senctioned Mahinda and Gotbaya Rajapaksa and many military people. Navi Pillay in her visit to Colombo, as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, in September 2013, called upon Sri Lanka again to conduct a credible inquiry into human rights violations. Failing that, “the international community will have a duty to establish its own inquiry mechanisms.”
Thirteen years since Navi Pillay’s demand, we are still waiting. It takes only a country like Canada or the UK that is a signatory to the Rome Statute to hand over its prosecutorial rights to the iCC when our war criminals go there. To let Sri Lanka and its war criminals off is to invite expanding impunity to war crimes and genocide.

… Navi Pillay Wins The Nobel Peace Prize For 2026 – Not Donald Trump
The title suggests that Trump was also in the running for the coveted prize. Was he? By whom?
If there was any list of those who do not deserve that prize Trump would have been right up there!

Well, well, well, Ms. Navanethem Pillay has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “doing her official job” promoting peace and international law. I highly doubt she inspired anyone.
Ms. Pillay was a “paid United Nations High Commissioner for Human Right” and a “paid Judge of the International Court of Justice” where the core part of the two international organizations are promoting peaceful settlement of disputes and international law.
What is not clear is as to how one paid official of an international organization was qualified for the Nobel Peace Prize whereas there were many other UN officials and international judges who promoted peace and international law? If it was a qualification, then Mr. António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General who played an active frontline role in peace processes, global conflict resolution, undertaking
highly-risky visits to war zones, volatile buffer zones and border crossings, strengthening international humanitarian law and thereby “inspired the entire world including world leaders” would have been more suitable to receive the Nobel Peace Prize than little-known Ms. Pillay.

Native,
don’t know how many are aware of this, told to me by a person close to Mara family.
Soon after war Mara managed to pass an unofficial resolution in the UN with the support of few countries,
kind of congratulating Mara for ending 30 years of war, regional militancy, so called Largest Humanitarian Mission
(you see, our politically appointed DIP-LOW-MATE is still parroting BS ),
Zero Casualty, war heroes ordered to carry food / water in one hand ?????
pictures of them carrying wounded children
( not the one Bala shot dead point blank )
……… blah ……. blah.
Apparently Mara was toying with the idea of getting him self nominated for Noble Peace Prize with the help of India, China being main supporters and seconded by countries voted for, in the UN.
Unfortunately, in no time the real facts started coming into light
putting an end to bugger’s Noble dreams.
Now Brother’s in Arms are sanctioned and labeled as ” WAR CRIMINALS.

What about Obama , Kissinger. …. ????
I get it
But Trump is also a pedophile, corrupt , criminal , racist , boasted to grab P…. in public , impeached twice , convict , pathological liar ..
Any prize for such Scums ???? 😅🤣😂😂🤣😅

And, take young Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg, who has been repeatedly ignored by the Nobel Peace Prize Committee, for example. She has inspired the entire world, especially the younger generation, with her climate change awareness campaigns, flotilla activism and advocacy for humanitarian efforts, human rights, social justice, child rights, anti-war and global relief efforts. She is one extraordinary young girl who bravely seeks accountability from world leaders. Yet, the Nobel Peace Prize Committee has again refused to recognize her impressive and inspirational awareness campaigns on multiple pressing global issues.
Will President Donal Trump be qualified for the Nobel Peace Prize? Hmmmm, maybe one day. He stopped one war out of the two wars started by Joe Biden. Palestinians are still being killed in Gaza, but the genocide has been stopped. In addition, President Trump has established a Gaza Rebuilding Fund, a surprise initiative that nobody imagined a US President would ever do. The other war is the Ukraine war. I hope it will be over soon, too.

Hello SebastianSR,
Gaza needs around $71 Billion for rebuilding. The Fund has so far collected around $280 million, a pittance. Gaza would be better off without Kushner and Witkoff (Real Estate Agents).

The same question applies: Why was the Nobel Peace Prize not awarded to the world’s greatest negotiator, who reportedly prevented eight wars, despite being nominated by Pakistan (Sri Lanka’s ‘all-weather friend’) and supported by its celebrated warrior, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah? Do you know why?

An anonymous posting I received: In 1958, Durban schoolgirl Navanethem Pillay won a speech contest declaring: “It would have been better for the world if Vasco da Gama had never sailed”. At home, her grandparents toiled in Natal’s sugarcane fields under British indenture. At the University of Natal, a lecturer failed her assignment for rejecting the claim that Britain had “civilised” India. In 1967, Pillay opened her Durban law practice and went on to challenge apartheid police torture, exposing abuses against political detainees and winning a landmark 1973 court ruling against unlawful solitary confinement on Robben Island. Apartheid authorities watched her, branded her dangerous and denied her a passport. Yet on 31 January 1995, the woman once barred from judges’ chambers entered her own as the first non-white woman to serve on South Africa’s Supreme Court. At the Rwanda tribunal, she exposed the systematic rape of Tutsi women, helping secure the landmark 2 September 1998 judgment recognising rape as an act of genocide. She became the first African UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in 2008, then chaired the commission that concluded in September 2025 that Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Continued …

Jaffna Man / October 11, 2026
Continuing … On 9 October 2026, the schoolgirl who condemned Vasco da Gama’s imperialism won the Nobel Peace Prize. Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has taken the fight to white supremacy. Navanethem Pillay was born on 23 September 1941 in Clairwood, Durban, the fifth child of bus driver Narrainsamy Naidoo and his wife, Santhama. Married at sixteen, Santhama taught herself to read and write English. She fought to secure her daughter’s admission to an overcrowded primary school, then stitched together notebooks from unused pages in her older children’s schoolbooks. She told Navi in Tamil: “You have to be educated so you will never be a slave to a man.” Her father encouraged his daughters to study, taught them self-respect and refused to let apartheid convince his children they were inferior. In 1952, eleven-year-old Navi was waiting for dental treatment at a municipal hospital when she leaned against a parked car. A white doctor shouted: “Get away, stop leaning on my clean car!” Despite such humiliation, she excelled academically, skipping Standard Two and progressing directly from Standard One to Three. In January 1956, she became the first pupil enrolled at Clairwood Indian High School.

In January 1956, she became the first pupil enrolled at Clairwood Indian High School.
In 1959, she won the school’s Dux Award for academic excellence. Her headmaster, V. N. Naidoo, rallied the community to raise money for her university education.
Of the four girls in her matriculation class, Pillay was the only one to enter university.
At the University of Natal, Black students attended classes in a former potato warehouse, where thirteen students shared a single textbook.

Profesor Hoole says: Alfred Arulanandam.
How come Prof. Hoole, and Arul of Mississauga did not note “Pillai” is a high Caste Tamil. Only striking a racist accolade?
Born Navanethem “Naidoo” in Durban, South Africa, her maiden name “Naidoo” presumably reflects her lineage. Her husband was Paranjothy Anthony “Gaby” Pillay, (married in 1965_. “Pillai” (spelled “Pillay” in South Africa) is a caste suffix of agrarian, land-owning Vellala community of Tamil Nadu (and Nair community in Kerala). I am sure Prof. Hoole can somehow find her caste reltives in Jaffna!
From their first names )Anthony, Alfred etc), one may guess that they are Christians!
Did they abandon their origianl religions and take to religions of Colonial invaders for some reason?
Please, please, leave racist, ethnic and religious divisions and accept that She won the prize on her own merit, perhaps in spite of being a Tamil in South Africa.

Pillai is also a name used by the caste of musicians, who are way down in the caste ladder.
Pillai has little relevance to the caste of a Sri Lankan Tamil. It is used liberally with no caste identity in this country.
Also study the background of the lady. he grandfather was working class.
Back up arguments with facts if you have any.

SebastianSR / October 13, 2026
SJ says Back up arguments with facts if you have any. Indeed, please do. Pillai has little relevance to the caste of a Sri Lankan Tamil. It is used liberally with no caste identity in this country. SJ has to understand that “Pillai”, or “Piilay” is not a caste but rather a prestigious honorific title used within the Vellalar Caste. So it probabaly is like “crème de la crème” of the Sri Lankan Vellalar. The interplay between the Vellalar (Pillai) hegemony, Christian conversion, and institutional discrimination in Jaffna highlights a complex social history that only Ratnajeevan Hoole can codify. Historically, Pillai (meaning “child” or “noble younger one”) was a title conferred by South Indian kingdoms on high-ranking administrators and landowners. When these populations settled in northern Sri Lanka, they established Vellalarism—a rigid, heavily codified social order. In Jaffna, the non-Brahmin Vellalar sit at the absolute peak of the social and economic pyramid. They controlled land, monopolized power (Mudaliyars and Udaiyars), owned lower-caste laborers under the Dutch-codified Malabar law Thesawalamai. Catholic and Protestant Churches were hesitant to ordain priests, let alone elevate individuals to bishops or higher office from marginalized or “oppressed” (Panchamar) castes–still partly true!
/
SJ / October 14, 2026
You were bullshitting about Pillai being a high caste name.
I have smashed that falsehood.
I added that Pillai has no caste significance in Sri Lanka.
Do not try to cover up your fallacy with more irrelevant crap.

A few brilliantly thinking Tamils believe that she successfully whitewashed the Sinhalese genocide of Tamils. One extraordinary Tamil even claimed that she was brought in to prevent the actual emergence of a separate Tamil Eelam.
–
One Tamil Nadu TV channel celebrated the fact that a descendant of Tamils had been awarded the highest honour. – I don’t know about you, but according to a few, the Nobel Committee found it appropriate to award a fellow Christian.
–
Now, Telugu activists believe that the award was given to a descendant of a Telugu person.
–
Champika Ranawaka might claim some affinity with her.
–
There is also a chance that Dutta Gamini’s son, Dissanayake, could claim that she is a distant cousin.
–
The important point is that she has balls. She withstood political pressure from all corners of the earth and delivered what was generally expected of her.
–
One should be happy that she was able to relate to as many people as possible, one way or another.

Hi Native Vedda, you have covered the whole gamaut brilliantly!
Navy Pillay connects the low and high end of the spectrum.
Navi Pillay’s grandparents were brought from India to the British colony of Natal in the 1890s to work under “semi-slavery” conditions on sugar plantations. Her grandfather lost both of his arms in a workplace accident at a sugar mill, compounding the family’s hardships. While it is true that marginalized, lower-caste populations made up the vast majority of indentured plantation labourers, the British did recruit high-caste and intermediate-caste Indians for indentured servitude, including thousands sent to South Africa and other colonies like Ceylon. 20% to 30% of recruits were from high-castes (Brahmins, and dominant castes like the Pillais/Naidoos). If a family’s crops failed and they faced starvation, their high-caste could not feed them. To survive, many proud families accepted the recruiter’s contract and board the ships. High-caste and lower-caste individuals were forced to sleep, eat, and use the same unsanitary facilities together on ship.
After the 1983 pogrom, high caste Colombo Tamils and low-caste Tamils were put in camps together, and this upset them more than even getting killed!
