Need For A New Ethical & Value System

By Siri Gamage

Dr. Siri Gamage

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake highlighted the need for “a new value system” in the country while addressing the 75th birth felicitation ceremony for Rev. Omalpe Sobhita. This is a point that he has been reiterating since he assumed duties and even earlier. Another point he mentioned was that the society and its institutions have deteriorated to such an extent that it is not possible to move forward as a nation and country without reforming these.  Consumerist values have encroached the minds of all. However, it is not an easy task to create and inculcate a new value system as such. The government alone cannot introduce a new value system to create a new civilisation.

Identifying a New Value system and Why we Need it?

What we need to understand is that values do not exist in a vacuum. They exist in an economic, political, social and cultural context. They are produced by society and maintained by it too. Powerful forces and institutions in society reproduce them in demarcated areas. This applies to good and bad values equally.

In any effort to create new values, the first task is to identify what the new values are and should be? Also, why we need such a system? As sociologists when we were teaching at the department of sociology, University of Peradeniya in the 80s, this was a subject under discussion with students. As we saw the expanding free market economy and its impact on the behaviour of children, youths and others we realised that the new consumerist values encompassing the society were not in the best interest of the society and human well-being. They were not in line with the traditional cultural values embraced by many.

The inflated value given to money, material wealth and external appearance while setting aside all other values that bind people together as a community or society was not in the best interests of families, communities or society at large. The main reasons for consumerist values and their expansion is the free market economy and globalisation.  With liberalisation of rules and regulations to assist new enterprises – often operated with foreign capital and other resources- has gone too far to the extent that society is corrupted by culturally incompatible and socially destructive values and practices.

The media including new media have a role to play in promoting old values or new values.

Religious and other civil society organisations also have a role to play in maintaining or reforming good, bad and worse values. Political leaders also have a role to play. Even more important, educational leaders need to play a critical role to identify and prepare a framework for new values but also to transmit them through teaching.

Need for a Broader Ethical Framework

For government institutions and corporations there has to be an ethical framework that respects human needs and aspirations on one hand and human well-being on the other. This can involve thoughts on human rights and responsibilities as citizens.

Many organisations in modern societies have Codes of conduct for employees. They need to reflect the new value system once identified.

The government in consultation with civic leaders in particular religious leaders need to come up with a strategy to identify new values suitable for the country and mechanism to promote them to the emerging generations.

The values that are desirable for an organically interlinked society and progress are already there in the society.  Some civil society organisations are involved in promoting them one way or another. Lessons have to be learned from the proponents.

Mechanism for Identifying and Promoting New values

This is very important. It is here that the government has to play a role in identify a set of religious leaders, academics, civil society activists, private sector entities from whom a Commission can be set up to investigate and prepare a values and ethical framework. The total number has to be around 10.

Some guidelines for this task need to be provided including a time frame. People should be encouraged to contact the commission with ideas and suggestions within a reasonable time frame.

The task of this commission should be to examine the suggestions and collate them into a single document along with recommendations. Once draft recommendations ae prepared, the commission can send them for further comment from various civic organisations before finalising.

Once finalised, they ought to be given cabinet approval and resources allocated to print the new values and distribute to schools, pirivenas, government and private sector institutions, media and the society at large with a request to utilise the new values in day to day living and working.

Unfortunately, without such concrete mechanism, it will not be possible to make a new value system a reality.

Good initiatives. But Country will gain only a few million dollars that way, as it will only target the small man. It is a weak form of country preservation.

Better if GoSL puts in tough laws with gross prosecution in place, to combat the billions of dollars of corruption in money laundering and overseas accounts – accounts that are actually legitimately there, but severely draining the country of its much needed resources with very little projected returns or that are a long time in coming (such that the small man has no other recourse than to be forced to dabble in small-scale corruption).

They should have the courage to catch these big fish. There’ll be tens of billions of dollars returned to the coffers that way.

On the broader issue of geopolitics, it suited Hindians to use “Your Leader” to lead destabilisation of Sri Lanka to bent clever dick JR (without breaking him) to listen to Hindia’s concerns about its safety in the back yard where clever dick was planning to allow uncle Same to build a base in Trinco, a relay station for (Electronic Listening post) The Voice of America (VOA) in Putalam, ….. during the era of cold war, when USA and USSR never fought wars however both countries encouraged, financed, armed, …. little people fight each other to maintain their (US USSR) interest in other countries. Unfortunately, what Sri Lanka has to guard against, more than our stupidity of dealing with India, is India’s stupidity of dealing with Sri Lanka.
One of the most monumental acts of India’s stupidity was instigating and foisting the “Tamil insurgency” on Sri Lanka.

What you couldn’t tolerate was JR’s leanings towards the West; the USA didn’t want a foot-hold in SL, they already had Diego Garcia. Come on nimal have you read Colonel’s typing before, during, and after the war? He kept LTTE closer. The stupid Tamil diaspora was made to believe whatever the cost finally LTTE was going to prevail, Kilinochi was going to be Stalingrad for Ari Lankan armed forces.
For Hindians Colonel was their man in diaspora, feeding …… .

The stupid diaspora never publicly nor privately demanded LTTE to release innocent people who were trapped and living in LTTE’s open prison, most of them were herded from Jaffna in 1995, because king VP needed some people to rule in his kingdom.

Ultimately with Hindia’s help Prabaharan won the war for Mahinda.

By the way didn’t it help Yankee Dicks to brutally suppress southern armed struggle(?)?

My point is you can’t live with Hindia you can’t live without Hindia.

I like to cite Ivana Trump wise counsel, ” don’t get mad, get everything”. Don’t get mad at Hindia, like old codger treat your women folks well and stop Hindians groping them.

“we realised that the new consumerist values encompassing the society were not in the best interest of the society and human well-being. They were not in line with the traditional cultural values embraced by many.”
What an intriguing statement! What exactly are these “traditional values”? Do they include the following?
A caste system. In pre-colonial times, caste mobility was unheard of. Fishermen couldn’t become kings. In fact fishermen couldn’t even become monks.
Polyandry in parts of the country. A woman could have several husbands.
Restrictions on what one could do depending on social status. One could not stand in front of the king, and one had to crawl backwards to leave his presence. Only people of the upper classes could paint their houses. Some women were not allowed to wear upper garments.
Worshipping parents/teachers/ rulers / clergy on a daily basis?
Allowing said clergy to recruit six year old children?

        OC:
This author has repeated the phrase “traditional cultural values” (or an equivalent) in countless CT articles without ever specifying what exactly he means by it. In a comment under a past article of his I requested him to give more specifics but here we go again. As you have rightly pointed out, many of our “traditional cultural values” and practices are not at all desirable. These “values” probably exist in the mind of the author and the like-minded only as a vague, mythical idea–hence his inability to elaborate.

          LJ,
I think the author is under the impression that 19th century Victorian ideas spread here by Christian missionaries (and quasi-Christians like Olcott) are our original culture.

          Hi Leonard,
Glad that you pose this question. Can you kindly reflect on the years you grew up in Lanka in a town or village and remember the good things that your teachers, parents, religious leaders, community taught you. Forget about the politicians.

We can cite some desirable values here but this is not an exhaustive list:

          1. Altruism
          2.compassion
          3. Empathy for others when in difficulty(including animals)
          4. Exchange ( you give part of what you have to others and receive same at times of social evens) e.g. Aurudda
          5. Do no harm (even to insects).

          6. Live and let live
          7. Community mindedness(in contrast to individualism promoted by commercial world, globalisation, free market economy)
          8. Five precepts
          9. Trsutworthiness
          10. non-violence
          11. equality and human rights (egalitarianism and equal opportunity)
          12. care for the animals and enviornment

Ideally, our faculties of ats and humanities in universities and education institutes like National Institute of education should be examining these and producing books, curriculum etc. More than a couiple of decades ago, academic staff at NIE did research about these values peculiar to our society and culture and prepared documents. Not sure if they still do these? Similarly, academic staff in the dept of social studies, Open University also did some work.

First, is the list you have given what the author meant by “traditional cultural values” or at least how much of it coincides with what he had in mind?
Second, aren’t these values taught to both young and old even today? Third, to what extent were these values actually PRACTISED in ancient Sri Lankan society as opposed to theory? Were they practiced more in older times than now and, if so, what is your evidence for it? If you read the writings of those who lived in past times, eg, Robert Knox, do you get the impression that ancient Sri Lankan society was morally, spiritually superior to today?
Were you joking when you wrote that these values were “peculiar” to Sri Lankan society? You seem to contradict yourself on this point by your reply to OC below regarding Australian society.

I am sorry to see that you are going far back into the Sinhala Kingdom to find traditional values. If you grew up in Sri Lanka, reflect on your growing up years and remember the good values you gew up with. What your teachers taught? What your religious leaders taught you? What your community taught?

Look at the positive and constructive things they taught you?

What did organisations like Sarvodaya did in poverty ridden communities and the lessons?

          Dr.G aka PCT,
“you are going far back into the Sinhala Kingdom to find traditional values.”
Well then, let’s talk about post-1948.
You have set out a list of (to you) desirable cultural attributes. But is this really the culture we had in our youth? I think not.
Take item #6, Live and let live.
When was this practiced in this country? Particularly with regard to the ethnic problem?
          Item 10 Non-violence.
Do I need to remind you of the murder of a PM by a couple of Buddhist monks, of all people?
          Item 5 Do no harm.
If this was one of our traditional values, how do you explain the JVP insurgencies?
Item 11 Equality and human rights
          Really?
We could debate this till the cows come home, but , having lived in this country all my life, I can confidently state that none of these values were common here IN PRACTICE. Dr. G, to be charitable, is speaking of a glorious past which never existed.

            Hello OC,
We got the same spiel about Victorian Times at Primary School. Then we started to read Charles Dickens and learned in the History Classes what life was really like for Working Class Children during those times. The BBC was also complicit in its portrayal of Middle/Upper Class life as being normal. Much as we enjoyed “The Railway Children” (1968 TV and 1970 Film) this was not us or our Grandparents Even at Secondary School there was still this Nostalgia for a non-existent Past. The English Literature Teacher took great exception to me calling “Cider with Rosie” by Laurie Lee, sentimental nonsense.
Right now I’m back in the 1950s here in Central Province; no Electricity, Candles and Gas Cooker for the cups of coffee. We lost 2 of our Papaya Trees, one Banana Tree and a Branch of our Jack Fruit Tree due to the high winds. We have been off current since the early hours of Thursday night /Friday morning and its now 7:30 pm Saturday. The CEB phoneline is continually engaged and apparently at least 50,000 houses are in the same situation. So altogether, sing “Always look on the Bright Side of Life”.
            Best regards

BTW, even estate superintendents didn’t have gas cookers in the Central Province in the 50’s.
Don’t you find it hilarious that those who complain about evil modernity do it on social media?

                Hello OC,
I remember using Single Sideband Radio (SSB) on an oil Rig, to place a personal call to Home from West Africa through Portishead Station in the mid 70s. We kept in touch with our Main Office by TELEX (remember them?). In the 60s my Father working on the Hydro Schemes sent his Wages by Telegram to the Local Post Office. Did anyone at the time call all of the above “evil modernity”?
Here’s something hilarious. I got my first Mobile Phone (Motorola Brick and Charger) in around 1989 and already had a Sony Walkman, Sony Watchman (PortableTV) and a Digital Camera. I suggested to my Colleagues that we should combine them altogether in one package. One them quickly replied (to much laughter) that I would need a strong Backpack to carry the Device.
The rest is History, good ideas need the right conditions to be feasible.
                Best regards

There is a story that in Saudi Arabia, the telephone was considered the work of the Devil. That is, until one day Abdul Aziz got a group of Mullahs to listen to a Koran recitation over the phone. Now you can’t make a call without praying five times…….

            OC:
The notion that people were better in bygone ages is an enduring myth commonly held all over the world. The main reasons for this are selective memory and downright ignorance. A careful study of even extent historical records from the past does not support this notion. Human nature has remained the same through time, so to think that people in the past in general were morally superior is a mistake. We could say that in some ways we have even progressed. For example, infanticide was practised in this country in the past but no longer–at least not on the scale it was in days gone by.

It’s not true that people were more helpful in the past than now, as this author thinks. There are still those who are ready to put their life on the line to rescue people in distress. On the other hand, there are also evil people who would even steal valuables (gold chains, phones, etc.) from victims of accidents. In my life I have experience with both people who helped me with no expectation of reward and a guy whom I had helped financially but tried to cheat me later.

              LJ,
Perhaps the reason that some practices were more common in the past was the insulation of most communities. No roads, phones, or transport, to keep it short.
So, people had to depend on their neighbours. But romantics forget the fact that “village life” in that era included smallpox, cholera, polio, infant mortality, and many other usually fatal or uncomfortable things.
As for moral superiority, a reading of history shows that many of our kings came to the throne by violence against their siblings or parents.

                OC:
“Perhaps the reason that some practices were more common in the past was the insulation of most communities…So, people had to depend on their neighbours.”

Yes, spot on. Also village populations were small and consisted of long-standing inhabitants, so basically everyone knew one another. This applies also to towns, though to a lesser extent. With increases in population and mobility these communities become less insulated and the inhabitants become less known to one another. But when the right conditions exist, the sort of communities which the author would look back on with nostalgia will exist.

In the area of the town I was born and grew up in, people knew most others and exchanged treats at one another’s festivals. I fondly remember looking forward to receiving our trays of goodies from Tamil neighbours at Thai Pongal time, not to mention the watalappan at Ramazan time! The road I lived in is now a concrete jungle, built up as it is with apartment blocks, and I think the situation there now must be quite different.

This author probably has a simliar experience but the extrapolation he makes based on that, that “values” have declined, is questionable.

I lived in far south in the Hambantota district until I entered University of Ceylon. Even after I visited the village I was born many a time. I could see most of what is listed. Our teachers taught us many values that we practiced. Sri lanka’s village society held much of traditional values even with the onslught from globalisation, consumerism, individualism etc. I am not saying that it was perfect but even strngers came to the house when someone dies, or very sick. There has been a serious decay in such values though. Hence the need to revive.

No, it should be “if women could, why not men?”

Why oh why do writers who decry consumerism do it from places like Australia? Not that I am a fan of consumerism, but many seem to prefer it, judging by the way they rush to VFS for visas.

Australia has very good values to imitate e.g. voluntarism. Most towns and villages have community based groupos and associations to do charity work or look after environment or to help people in emergencies and natural disasters. e.g. State Emergency Service. When a roof is broken due to heavy rai, first thing people do is to ring SES for help. it is a government subsidised agency covering whole country. In floods, they come and use boats to reach people stranded in roof tops. Recently there was floods in mid north coast for a week. SES rescue animals or provide feed. Bring medicines for critically ill patients. Distribute food. In most towns there are community organisations like Rotary clubs, Lions clubs, and other service organisations led by volunteers. In Lanka, people wait until the government do something without getting their hands dirty. People even do not grow vegetables and fruits in their gardens like Australians. Rely on the super market. So, before you criticise please come up with some positive and constructive comments that can help people to open eyes and be acitve please.

          Dr.G,
“When a roof is broken (in Australia) due to heavy rai, first thing people do is to ring SES for help. it is a government subsidised agency covering whole country.”

“In Lanka, people wait until the government do something without getting their hands dirty.”
So, Aussies and Lankans both depend on the government?
          “Rely on the supermarket “
Are you suggesting that Australians don’t rely on supermarkets?
Perhaps you don’t know that 4 chains control 80% of the market in Australia?
          https://www.gourmetpro.co/blog/biggest-supermarkets-australia#:~:text=Australia's%20market%20is%20dominated%20by,Coles%20alone%20holding%20around%2065%25
What I am criticising is the tendency to see the past as something glorious when in fact it wasn’t.

As a member of the opposition, the leftist politician was strongly opposed to maintaining Sinhala Buddhism and its rituals. However, he had to do the same after taking office in order to appease ignorant people and those who believe in myths; otherwise, the abusive, dirty-mouthed man would not last long in his position as president. At first glance, Europeans and non-Europeans would not understand why a small island with only 23 million people and a high school literacy rate cannot become another Singapore of the world. However, those who study the intricate regional culture only realize that the primary obstacle facing the countries is the stupdities of the people and the abusive cultures..
Now that he is the country’s leader, he must understand that corruption and crime are just one of the things preventing us from progressing; other highly influential factors that hinder them from reaching their economic objectives include culture, religion, sorcery, and astrology. The nation is not as landlocked as South Sudan or the Ivory Coast, but in order to achieve their economic objectives, people’s attitudes and adherence to the truth need to be significantly changed.

Being a Buddhist monk ……. being a Buddhist ……. is about living a virtuous life.

It does not mean, preaching/advising, day in day out, others to live a virtuous life, while you yourself don’t.

It’s a free country ……… go and be a Buddhist or whatever you want to be, in your own space …….. but no one has the right to intrude on other’s free-space ……. and trample on their rights to live a free life.

The next step of evolution …….. of Lankan society?

It took 2500+ years to get a leader ……. who lives …….. even a semblance of the Buddhist virtuous life.

How long will the next step take?

        Hello Nimal,
How long will the next step take? It was done a long time ago by Henry VIII with an Act of Parliament in 1834 that was put into practice from 1836 on. OK it wasn’t Buddhists but the process would be the same, hopefully with less violence. https://notesfromtheuk.com/2024/11/22/dissolving-the-monasteries/
Many of the Abbeys were destroyed, but quite a few survived like Haughmond Abbey near Shrewsbury. I went with my wife a couple of years ago to show her the Abbey and the Graves of my Ancestors, now displayed in the Chapter House. – https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/haughmond-abbey/history/
There are many reasons why Henry took this step (Dissolution of the Monasteries) but Money and Catholicism were two of the reasons.

            Hello Nimal,
I maybe said this before, however, my Daughter and one Granddaughter both have the same Ability. My Mother and Grandmother also had it, I was told.
As an example I was waiting for my 2 Granddaughters (Twins not Identical) to meet me for a meal in Weatherspoons. The first one came in walked over and sat at the Table. The second one arrived at the Door and walked in; practically every man turned and looked at her. Whether it is pheromones or something else, I don’t know, but I have seen it too often to think its coincidence.
Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to have been passed on down the Male line, however you soon get to know what a Woman is interested in, and whether she is interested in you. If you get the “Thousand Yard Stare” it’s time to leave.

Yes you are very correct. I have to agree with you on this one 100%
        .
If true Buddhism were genuinely practiced in Sri Lanka, we would not be facing these issues today.
        .
The Dhamma is clear in its guidance on how we should treat one another and how we, as Buddhists, are expected to conduct ourselves—with compassion, integrity, and mindfulness.
        .
The Dhamma is unambiguous in its call for Mettā (loving-kindness), Karuṇā (compassion), Muditā (empathetic joy), and Upekkhā (equanimity). These are not abstract ideals—they are the daily disciplines that shape how we speak, act, and coexist with others., especially if our conduct becomes a pain to others.
        .
It is deeply unfortunate that, despite the countless Dhamma sermons delivered across the country, many still seem to miss the fundamental essence of the Buddha’s message.
        .
I think it is high time, we Sinhala Buddhist being in majority and wielding government and political power should inwards and be coconscious about this pathetic burden on the minorities, and solve this issue once and for all.

HT and all other rational thikers,
I believe failure lies in the hands of Sri Lankan monks.

The majority of them are hypocrites. There are approximately 25K to 30K monks in the country who have been sacrificed to temples by their impoverished parents.

They should first aspire to be monks.

The majority of them hide behind their robes and take advantage of their hidden desires. For example, the KAGAMA monk is completely opposed to “women”. His explanation goes viral, and he is now flanking AKD, who knows nothing about many characters in this country. Only former President RW did not accept monks as close to him as MaRa did.
Mr RW had his own limits with Gangarama mONK.

Whatever is said and done, RW is the only mature leader capable of bringing some light into the completely collapsing nation. However, media fraudsters oppose him. I’m not hopeful about Sri Lanka. Jeppos instills hatred in the youth, and they lack the knowledge to anticipate events. Just look at the youtuber video comments made by the youth; most of them can’t see beyond “wishing niwan suwa”.

venerate Beggars the same way they do to the monks ? Simple logic .
People for religion or religion for people ? Who wanted religion in
politics or vice versa . Our politics benefitted from religion or vice versa .
Who worked best to distance one from the other in the great interest of
the general public ? Have governments in our country knowingly used
religions to mislead the people in order to hide their inability to solve
burning economic issues ? If not , what have been their actions to make
people aware of distancing themselves from being extreme in their belief
in religions ? Identify the cause . Whoever does it , a meaningful step .

              WW,
              thanks for your comment.
Little children are sacrificed to the temple for another reason: if a child is offered to monkhood, the ignorant Sinhala Buddhists are led to believe that they and their generations will easily approach nirawana.
Two years ago, I saw some young monks playing in a temple (near to Kalutara), and they appeared to be undernourished. I cannot understand why in the world some parents choose to send their children to a temple that is now regarded by adult monks as a hotspot for child molestation. Additionally, a few years ago, medical reports leaked from pediatric hospitals stating that some child monks had hemorrhages and bleeding in their rectal ends.

                  WW,
Sri Lanka is a country with all due entities restricted to its name and board. Today, temple crimes and sexual abuses of child monks remain a taboo subject. This could also be the case in churches.
Child abuse in schools and at home is rapidly increasing. Films and teledrama that air on television channels contribute to an increase in the types of crimes committed by providing criminals with additional tips on how to target women and children, who are the most vulnerable groups. We must not compare it to India (1500 million) or Sri Lanka (23 million), as India has a high rate of rape and murder. It may still be lower than ours when compared to 1000 people.

I hope that the current government will address child abuse by strengthening child protection laws.
-I hope that the current government, which has begun to say all of these utopian things about real change, will act on them by enacting new laws.
Four years ago, actor Ranjan Ramanayaka was outspoken about child molestation by senior monks in certain temples. True, good monks should be praised, but an increasing number of criminal monks, including Ghanasara, should be warned and subjected to harsh punishments for the remainder of their lives. If they want to commit such crimes, they should avoid becoming “monks.” Underage children are easy targets for paedophile monks. To reduce the number of completely hidden crimes, ordaining monks under the age of ten should be banned.

As usual, you use your limited knowledge to interpret or comprehend anything. Nothing like what you insult is promoted by Buddhism, as you are aware of some basic facts about it. However, the practices of Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and all other religions completely deviate from the fundamental ideas of Buddhism.
Why can’t you at least begin your primary studies at this age, given that elderly Japanese people can begin their dgrees after they turn seventy? Hello Human Touch,
After spending 4 years living in Central Province amongst mainly Sinhala Buddhists ans Tamil Hindus, I have a better appreciation of both Religions. I have issues with both Religions’ Cosmologies and Philosophies. Most of their Moral Precepts can also be found in Humanist Outlooks. Caste in either Culture I find distasteful. There should be no Discrimination against people for their Religion Ethnicity/Race, Gender, Political Outlook or Caste/Class. “The UN views discrimination as a fundamental violation of human dignity and a denial of the principles of equality and non-discrimination.”
However in the words of Al Jazeera Presenter Steve Clemons “I have a question” – is there such a thing as a Country that practices “True Buddhism”?

            LS,
I believe that people in Europe and other countries who adopted Buddhism later or who are currently practicing Buddhism adhere to the authentic teachings of the Buddha.
You might be correct that there isn’t a single nation that practices authentic Buddhism. The majority of them practice some form of non-viilence but are not true Buddhists; they are found in Thailand, Myanmar, and Tibet. The important thing is that, to a certain degree, we can all call it a Buddhist nation if they practice Buddhism. However, Sri Lankans practice it without even understanding the fundamentals of Buddhism. That is the way of life that has emerged in SL.
How can a country with a large Buddhist population have higher crime rates?

            Strictly, Buddhism rejects the concept of caste. (The Buddha has reportedly humiliated Brahmins who claimed higher birth.}

One must keep in mind that Tamil was the language of commerce in this region. A ship’s bell was found in New Zealand inscribed with the name of the Tamil Muslim owner. Then there is our own Galle Trilingual inscription of about the same period by Zheng Ho, which is in Persian, Chinese, and Arabic, not Sinhala.

Did theBuddhism asked every Leader of this island for a special treatment to it or It is only the voice of the Buddhist Monks to get a special treatment above the law. It was not in the constitution of this island until 1972 by SLFP which is further strengthen by UNP constitution in 1978. We still do not want or unable to remove it from the constitution even after blaming all past Sinhalese leaders for corruption. If it is true that special status to Buddhism is followed according to its principles how it is possible to its leaders escape from large scale corruption until now? Why was the Buddhist Religious leaders fail to stop corruption.?

This person uses every trick in the book to keep us occupied when Namal Baby is the next target of the lanken judiciary.
Please be advised, HT, OC, and everyone else, that Deepthi is doing everything in her power to keep us from disclosing much more about the Rajapakshe clan.
In light of that, kindly provide as much information as you can. If the bloody rascals had been driven from the lanken soil, this country would have been a paradise.

Very soon deepthi silva will assume another identity.
Have you noticed how this person has chosen to spell hei/her name, deepthi silva spelt in simple letters, this is not a name. He/ She is actually an It.
An identity amongst many. Commenting on CT whilst being in the payroll of the most crooked Mara clan.
Only a highly deranged entity can perform such mindless and shameless chores for the devil for the sake of money.

            apologies for key board errors.

.Sri Lankans assume someone is sober and kind-hearted as long as they don’t say anything. Even though Ghanasara’s violent sanga brigade destroyed this nation, these high chapter monks said nothing. Additionally, in certain regions of the nation, they were engaging in child molestation. :::: Furthermore, deterring society to such a terrible degree could have been prevented for a long time if Rev. Malcom Ranjith and those high chapter monks had performed their duties effectively.
These days, nobody goes 200 yards to the market without doing a “double take to check around the chainrobbers or any other purse buzunarers around.”

My apologies for being off topic. Is it me or just everyone see hundreds to ads when you try to read an article on this website? It used to be not this bad now you can hardly do anything without having to click through popups and ads ?

If you have solved this can you let me know how you fixed the issue. Also can some admin have a look . it only happens with CT

“A grand felicitation ceremony was held to mark the 75th birth anniversary (?) of Ven. Dr. Omalpe Sobhitha Thero.”
    This is so embarrassing!!!
Why does a Buddhist monk need a special grand scale felicitation ceremony for a “monastic service” and a birthday celebration for his 75th Birthday? This is not Buddhism! How could this senior Buddhist monk forget “Jati, Jara, Marana”; the cycle of suffering and “Thanha”; the root cause of suffering?
I am totally against Anura Kumara wasting public funds to celebrate the birthday of a Buddhist monk. The colossal amount of money spent on this should have been utilized to give parcels of rice and curry for hungry children and that should have been the best tribute. For birthdays of self and children, most Buddhists offer meals to orphanages, elder homes, hospitals and beggars near temples. Is this senior Buddhist monk not aware of it?
Anura Kumara is not a Buddhist. His interactions with Buddhist monks and temples are for propaganda. But, being a senior Buddhist monk, Venerable Omalpe Sobhitha Thero could have easily refused this self-promoting showy act, and advised Anura Kumara to spend the money on a worthy course.

First of all, I don’t need your permission to write a comment. Secondly, I did not criticize “a birthday”. I criticized the grand birthday celebration of a Buddhist monk. Are you angry because I criticized your Godfather?
I was very surprised to see there wasn’t a single comment criticizing this flashy birthday celebration of a Buddhist monk.
Whenever there was an article related to Buddhism or Buddhist monks, you could see a large number of hateful comments vilifying Buddhist monks, preaching Buddhists how to practice Buddhism and the need to separate Buddhism from politics. Why are they silent about this particular birthday celebration? Is it because they have no issue with sellouts or are they reluctant to criticize the Godfather of Aragalaya? This is interesting!

Champa and DTG, who are rigid, will never be able to approach anything remotely right in this life. They have amusing abilities, but nothing near to the facts.
Their small brains contain limited information, and it’s possible that their cognitive nature is also working against them.

DTG is like a parrot, and Champa belongs to the category of licking bo-trees until her and other beasts’ needs are met.
The level of affinity to Sinhala Buddhism by this person and many others in our country is the main reason why our people in general cannot achieve anything, even if they have dreams for their children’s future.

Facts are those things that are verified. Did you go to the time of Abraham to witness and verify anything?
And which version of the bible are you referring to?
There are many versions and each one is different.
Blind faith is not based on facts.

        PCT,
        .
An important question that hasn’t received any response as of yet. why?

The Rajapakshe clan has been creating our hell for a long time, and I feel AKD has finally realized that things cannot be maintained there without being near a monk’s ROBE.

In Sri Lankan politics, monks’ robes are extremely important, much like the red cloth used in fierce bullfights. The key question is that people are led to believe the foolish stories these idiots tell, even if only 1% of the 25,000 to 30,000 monks are actually Buddhists. For his own reasons, the KAGAMA monk—who may have had hormone issues before entering monastic life—is hostile to women, and he is currently being given preference. His jokes go viral… to maintain the integrity of the stupid masses.

If you continue to lick the bo-tree and try to pass under the robe of thakkadiyas, the ignorant citizens of this country will have to follow you as a voter. The same SATAKAYA effects are still present in the UNP and SJB, where the penisless Premadasa junior is to blame for the current mess and SATAKA’s bastard son is now attempting to take over as the next leader. Much more was accomplished by former president RW with a single vote in the parliament than the SJB leader ever did with his men.

You have always been a radical Buddhist and a racist. Champa.

Why don’t you oppose AKD and his attempts to use Buddhism as a ruse to win over voters?

AKD didn’t wait to raise their voice after the previous leader had done so. Recall? Today, their government’s politics incorporate all of the things they cried for. According to rumors, the AKD-led group is also attempting to buy candidates so they can lead LG councils where they have only received less than 50% of the vote, as MARA and other politicians have done in the past.

While Dharma tries to enlighten you, Champas bigoted version breeds hatred and exclusion, not to mention intolerance and full of malice and judgement. Years and Years of built up frustration if you ask me.

    Author:
“President Anura Kumara Dissanayake highlighted the need for “a new value system” in the country while addressing the 75th birth felicitation ceremony for Rev. Omalpe Sobhita.”

Would the author agree that this “new value system,” whatever AKD meant by it, should include always speaking the truth and eschewing lying? The latest publicly known lie of the NPP is saying that AKD had intended from the beginning to attend the National War Heroes’ Commemoration held on May 19, whereas the original plan was for the ceremony to be held under the patronage of the Deputy Minister of Defence. A number of prominent NPP ministers repeated this untruth and showed their true colors. In the department of lying the NPP seem to have new records which will be hard to beat.

Truthfulness should be added to the list See above). Unfortunately this is lacking in Sri lankan personality .Instead we have opportunism inculcated in the behaviour. For example, when going for job interviews, many have the habit of saying yes when asked can you do this or that?

Once we come up with a long list of values suitable for contemporary society, they need to be regrouped into 5 or 6 broad categories for easy comprehension.

Shame on people behaving like this in this century. Because Colonial Masters like you did in the last century thing the suffering of the upcountry people still face. India is a high growth country within the main countries, with 6.5% GDP. Keep showing your indecent mind through as many dimensions as possible for you. But reality is “Kakam Thiddy Maadu Saakaathu.” You never care to substantiate any of your talk with a shred of evidence. But TN is going to teach its lesson soon, for the Persian, Mongols and Europeans pirates, for more than one and a half millenniums, having roped everything they had. These pirate races have robbed all they had, but they could not do anything with their highly acclaimed language, which carries the flag of their unmatching greatness for the past 5 millenniums.

Thanks, many times I tried to explain to my Colleague about Cultural Differences and Traditions, however it drove him to distraction. He was a bit Hyperactive, with not a lot of Patience. The Company that the Tamil Nadu lads worked for was pretty corrupt. A couple of them told me that they were hired as Labourers, spent a few days with the Electricians and then they became Electricians. Of course our company was paying the Going Rates for the Type of Work done by the Contractors. To give an example all the Cables that we put in were clamped to the Steel Work or run in Cable Trays. When the Tamil Nadu Company (Head Office in Dubai) took over the outfitting of the Towers, all the cables were run using (Cheap) Plastic Cable Ties. 2 years later and the Plastic ties had become Brittle in the UV Sunlight and started to break off leading to Cables being torn out by the Wind. The same Company stopped paying their Employees for Months and then went bust leaving their men without Jobs and out of date Visas.

Hello LS, after living in Sri Lanka for the past four years, do you not believe that the country’s media ought to do a better job of educating its citizens about a variety of topics? In general, what the media is attempting to portray—whether it be internal or external politics—is simply not even 10% of the truth. For instance, before taking office, they ought to have disclosed a great deal more about the AKD leadership and their true capabilities in a variety of fields. The mainstream media ignored it, and YouTubers and their movement continued on. And the fact that AKD-led organizations are completely lacking in specialists and knowledge is becoming more evident to the very supporters today than it was at any similar time in the past.

              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fa5r3h52_5Q

The fact that the AKD did not attend the BRICS conference just before the PE and GE were held has now become a hot topic. It has been said that this was a huge failure, and it includes a comparison to the remarks made by the ambassador to Russia yesterday. The AKD-led government’s performance thus far has not pleased the outside powers. Even though many people continued to believe in them by casting more than 6.8 million of the 17 million eligible votes, this sounds extremely unfavorable to our country.

                Hello Leelagemalli,
I met some of the NPP Candidates before the Election. They were canvassing in the Area and stopped at my Sister in Law’s Tea Shop outside Gampola. It struck me that they didn’t have much knowledge of how to run a National Government, although they did have Local Government experience. However I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt. Most of the people here in our area voted for them because of their dislike for the Previous Administrations (that includes Ranil’s).
One of the Successful Candidates stops by the Tea Shop occasionally, I’ll try to catch her next time and see how she feels about the National Situation.
My Stepson in Veyangoda voted for them but he feels that the NPP is hamstrung in what they can achieve. I am going to Colombo on Thursday to renew my Resident Visa so I will talk to him some more then.

There you did your best to degrade a country’s people speaking Tamil! But remember, you are only a well frog with your pseudo-science and twisted English sentences with your fake stories, because India is the world’s lowest cost manufacturer of industrial goods in the world, not China, not Vietnam, not even Scotland. There is a saying in Tamil, “Five pence horse may not jump across the river”. In English, they say “Cheap things are not good, good things are not so cheap”. Are you saying that the company employed you is the one employed that tricky Tamil boys, isn’t it? When our Parai Demulo Dr. Jaisankar offered to Langkang $5 a vial of UN approved vaccine, Langkang paid $15 a vial from China, but that was not honestly approved by the UN (WHO). Have you written a line about these, ever? What it appears is you are just sitting and gossiping with your acolytes, but if you are caught you are trying to turn it on me and keeping cool, isn’t it? If so, why are you trying to bring shame for yourself? Elephant throws dirt on its head; probably you want to sound that you are a wooly mammoth.

After the Covid -19, India caught up on the vaccine with the world’s most advanced medicine producers, India claimed they had achieved the status of “World’s Pharmacy!”. But the medicine Langkang imported from India with India’s emergency loan was deadly dangerous. Langkang the corruption enterprise told India medicines are faulty. It was India who tore the mask of Rambo like thieves, and it said, “they were selling many different quality medicines to many countries. Langkang crooks selected the dealers from whom they bought bad things with commission pay back.

Are you trying to beat Shakespeare or Leo Tolstoy, or both in one shot in storytelling? Sorry LankaScot, there is no point for me to join you on the NPP campaign, which appears to be one of your excellent selections for distraction, until you honestly come out with what you really said about the Tamil Nadu workers.

For new ethics and values , why dont we appoint a committee comprising Paul, Tragic touch ,Leela ,SJ and OC to come up with ideas.

As they practice new ethics and standards it should be easy for them.

OC who has a PhD from Japan on politeness should be the chairman.

Leela the brilliant writer among them will be the scribe !

I’ve never heard street women talk politely. Rape victims often take a long time to recover.
Their rape mindset gives us an idea of what they have been through. The same is true for our Deepthi, who, despite having caught a wave of rapes and other crimes, would never come down to speak positively about others. She is very cynical.

She, he, or the eunach, whichever you prefer, would never see anything positive about South Asians, even if the person herself is a hiding junkie in Wilpattu but acts as if she is qualified to clean Buckingham Palace’s toilet.

Leela What is wrong with you my friend ?

Here I am trying to promote you and you use your native culture on me !

        Bad, bad !

I will soon take my vacation and I hope when I return you would have become a good boy ! Try to be like Scotty . Don’t keep company with the slimy touch guy !

            OC,
            .
Who will be the next to follow Aluthgamage, in your opinion?

According to rumors, Shiranthi, Yoshita Baby, and Namal Baby might join the line to appease us.

The judiciary can’t wait any longer, in my opinion.
Deepthi and other hired lackeys will soon have to take a vacation.

It’s hilarious that these men believe we are idiots. How about spending vacations in Nice, France?
Share markets and Quntam theries ?

              Perhaps Ravi K?

                OC,
I believe that everything they hid behind those 323 containers was the most serious crime ever committed, because what entered the country is FULLY unknown.
Bimal Rathanayaka (BR) will have to face the music sooner or later. He is another candidate for indictment in the manner of Aluthgamage. However, it can take a while. Ravi K’s case is not yet clear; I don’t know much about it, despite Nagananda K’s constant complaints.
I believe Wasim Thadjudeen’s killers are more likely.
Btw, Aluthgamage’s leader, aka MaRa, has not spoken out against Aluthgamage’s imprisonment. Neither has his bastard son, Namal baby.

It is imperative that the following investigations be resumed.
              1) Who was the murderer of Sunday Leader Editor? WICKRAMATUNGA LASANTHA?
              2) Who killed rugby player Thadujeen Wassim? (Why didn’t CID interrogate Shiranthi?) Why hasn’t anyone in the Rajapakshe family been imprisoned yet?
              3) What caused the GAMPAHA idama (the Basil etal-built palace that was improperly investigated)? Why can’t Basil S Assets be investigated in the United States? According to reports, these men worked in survival jobs prior to 2005.
              4) It is necessary to look into plane loads that are transported to European locations using state funds under MaRa. If not now, when?

OC, we can speed up DEEPTHI’s execution (so called vaccationing ? in Wilpattu ?) if we continue to reveal more information about Rajapakshe’s crimes. The thumb-up meter will then be treated with more “red thumbs”. That will answer our commenters’ questions about who Deepthi is.
10% of punnakku drinkers would be going after NAMAL BABY in this country led by stupid marjoity; however, the judiciary will have to do the job because nothing appears to be against their decisions now. kUDOs should not be filed with the government because it is not a government act, but rather one of the judiciary. If we spread the misconception that the judiciary is run by the AKD government, it will be detrimental to their survival in the coming months.

                LM,
We can safely assume that the government will do very little about Lasantha’s murder, because he was an ant-war figure. At the time, the JVP was very pro-war. Things may be different under AKD, but the JVP old guard are not likely to have changed.

DS, do you believe Basil Rajapakshe should be kept out of prison for his deliberate crimes in both America and Sri Lanka?

In fact, Basil’s orders led to the establishment of ALuthgamage, which distributed carromboard at the expense of the government. Rumours have circulated that Rajapkshes are like crabs in hot water today. You, as a toilet expert, should go check out their sanitation facilities.

Leela, you and OC have this fixation with toilets !

May be caused by a life time of using a can of water and your left hand.

          Hello Deepthi,
Every Qatari/ Bathroom has a Pipe (shattaf). Our house has the same in all the Bathrooms as have many Sri Lankan Houses. The vast Majority of British Bathrooms do not. My Scottish Relatives on their visits have all said the same “These are much more hygienic than the British Methods”.

            LS,

Muslims, in general, use water to cleanse themselves around the clock. This was learned each time I used the restrooms in Doha and Dubai on my way back to Colombo from Europe. Europeans only use toilet paper, but they are accustomed to taking a shower every day. Once our comments have been reviewed, our toiletting expert will contact us with additional toiletting specialties.

Btw, Are you hearing anything about LESTER today?
            .
DS is a paid lackey who is attempting to divert attention away from the topic at hand. Please keep an eye on things.

This individual understands that the longer we avoid discussing the issues at hand, the easier it will be for Rajapkashe and their tactics to return and loot the state. None of the individual’s comments are directed at the subject addressed in the article.

          DS,
Why are these kinds of ludicracies necessary?
I assumed you knew everything in this forum far better than anyone else and that you were a coconut.

Nevertheless, you never returned to us with any coherent responses.

You plan to continue providing your services for PRO-RAJAPKSHE politics for how many more days and weeks?

Leela you and OC never explain why You think I am pro-Rajapaksa !

I am not pro anything from that funny area of the world .

Most of all I dislike you guys who are really something else ( unwholesome ) but posing as English speaking cosmopolitan humans. All you want is to creep into Western countries and use comforts invented by them , including freedom , holidays, sports and pubs.

Criticizing something unwholesome does not make me pro-Rajapaksa .

Your resident psychologist Tragic Touch may wonder whether you guys were victims of Nandikadal and therefore hate Rajapaksa who you associate with that embarrassing defeat.

Actually you should blame the Sun God Prabakaran for his stupidity.

Your objection cannot be corruption , if that is the case it is a very selective corruption !

You always justify Ranil Vajira, Ravi K , Mahendran, Sagala, Manusha.

all these chaps Rambukwella, Johnston, Kiriella were Ranil boys. Now OC will say ranil sacked them because he saw they would one day be corrupt !

              Is that the truth ?

Please examine the personality of your Ranil. He is the curse of that country

“Leela You and OC never provide an explanation for your belief that I support Rajapaksa!”

              Isn’t it clear?

Do you think that the part of Punnakku that you rudiment will stop us from using SLPP tactics?
As the AKD-led government grows weaker, SLLP members are praising MaRa regime and their crown prince Namal Baby.

These days, Handunetti, the exaggerated economist in the NPP (No Proper Plan), is entertaining us with one enormous lie after another: Without a doubt, his disappearance would be brought on by “a stoning at him by an angry mob next days.”

      Hello Narcissistic deepthi silva
I know my comments are flipping switches deep inside that twisted mind of yours.
Narcissistic personality disorder is incurable as per doctors views but my offer still stands, and I guarantee results – a thundering slap will fix everything.
It is completely free of cost too.

Regarding the two Thakkadiyas of the SLPP (Aluthgamage and Nalin) the Sri Lankan judiciary was spot on. In my opinion, Deepthi and similar individuals are more serious offenders than the other members of the virulent group. If Thadujeen Wasim’s mysterious murder investigations are successful, I hope to see Shirianthi, also known as the Gold Biscuit Queen, put in jail in the near future. I don’t feel sorry for them because of their age, but they did all of this on purpose, and that’s why people should see the vicious men and women in the Rajapakshe fraciotn punished appropriately.

Tragic touch, If I let you slap me is it narcissism or masochism.? You are not even good in the field you want to shine in !

In my opinion, using the term “woman” would be a violation of the Advertising Standards Act.

Not just slapping, but hanging/roping should be legally imposed on anyone who works for criminals. ——————-> Criminals should be treated without mercy – basta!

          Planning a vacation soon?

And constant criticism of the English language and writing style of anyone.

Prabakaran is spreading pro-Rajapakshe propaganda while posing as a woman.

All of this is not new for us from this person. The same answers over months and years.

          DTG,
Did you understand why HT said that Deepthi should get a “thudding slap”?
Or it performed as though “when you point the fingers at Moon, some search for the deformities of the fingers rather than looking at the moon” or something like that

Criminals like Deepthi who work for political crooks ought to be hanged immediately, in my opinion. In the days ahead, we’ll see how it goes for this individual.
          https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Kovoor
According to Prof. Kovoor, an Indian socioanalyst who lived in this country fifty years ago, Sri Lankans would never consider it correct because, at the end of the day, even the most educated and the uneducated people would bow their heads without asking why they are doing it. Humans are lost in the evolutionary process. Deepthi Silva, DTG, and CHAMPA are excellent examples of certain types in Sri Lankan society who struggle with their inability to see things logically. They wouldn’t understand why they were being asked to eat “Thanikola” instead of “Rice and Curry,” so they would just start doing it.

          • 1

leelagemalli, there is no evolution that can take away humans created by Jehovah God for his purpose of a family. Those who don’t accept that go to hell.

            • 1

“there is no evolution that can take away humans created by Jehovah God for his purpose of a family. Those who don’t accept that go to hell.”

My neighbor, a psychologist, once said that people who pursue things excessively are bad for their health. Similarly, you are like lab rats who will only become more foolish if you follow the instructions in the Bible and the Quran.

Are you certain of the HELL ?
Or have you failed to see past it? The purpose of religions is to discipline humanity. Anyone who misuses the option and takes it as opium will give up everything they own. Religious beliefs are the primary cause of conflicts between communities worldwide. Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Judaism are all the same. We were told about hell when we were children, but as adults, we simply stopped thinking about it. However, there are differences in how people evaluate their beliefs based on their cognitive abilities. You and Champa- or similar people cannot survive today without it, to give the best example.

New ethical and value system ??
What happened to 2500 year old ethical and value system ??
Is it bankrupt like our economy, intellectual capacity, voter IQ, morality ——–
I guess like in our economic downturn , Lankans didn’t see this coming.
Next birthday celebration / felicitation, is for Ganasara, Ratana, chief prelates.
Country like no other, ethical and value system like no other.
A con man and Tsunami fund diverter is elected by Millions as PM, President. A Mastermind and white van operator elected with 2/3 majority as President. Their brother Mr. 25% appointed as Finance Minister. Another as Speaker of the house. While running Scams they were in charge of various parliamentary Ethics committees .
What NEW ethical and values are we talking.

    • 5
      0

Hope, this NEW is not another branding strategy of selling old products as new
like in new sun light soap, new milo, new Maggi Noodles —— new this , new that.
How can we forget Kapputas branding bankruptcy as “prosperity and splendor.”
SHAM Lanka is not just economically, but ethically, morally, intellectually, systemically ——— ( you name it ) BANKRUPT.
Mahindananda and Ramboo chairing parliamentary ethics committees, funny indeed.
      F****** HYPOCRITES.
