Neo-Fascism On The Rise In Sri Lanka

By Tariq A. Al Maeena

Tariq A. Al-Maeena

In shades reminiscent of Nazi fascism of yesteryear, Buddhist militancy in Sri Lanka has lately begun to rear its ugly head of intolerance towards the island’s minorities. A massive rally was held in the capital city of Colombo last week by the belligerent Sinhalese Buddhist group, the Bodu Bala Sena, and the message was very explicit.

‘This is a Government created by Sinhala Buddhists and it must remain Sinhala Buddhist. This is a Sinhala country, Sinhala Government. Democratic and pluralistic values are killing the Sinhala race.”

In speeches charged with provocative rhetoric, the group’s party leaders demanded that President Mahinda Rajapaksa ensures the protection of the ‘sacred Sinhala franchise’ that swept him into power. Extremist monks denounced Muslim practices, such as their use of conservative clothing referring to it as ‘gorilla’ outfits, and have called for a total ban on halal products for the community. Clad in white or t-shirts bearing a ‘No-Halal’ slogan, the supporters carried Buddhist flags and cheered enthusiastically when extremist Bodu Bala Sena monks denounced particular Muslim practices.

The word ‘halal’ means permitted or lawful. Halal foods are foods that are allowed under Islamic dietary guidelines. According to these guidelines extracted from the Quran, Muslim followers cannot consume certain foods that include pork, animals that were dead prior to slaughtering, carnivorous animals and birds of prey. The rulings also include animals not slaughtered properly or humanely.

Whipping the mob into frenzy during the demonstration in the capital, the mob leaders exhorted the crowds to become a vigilante Sinhalese self-appointed civilian police force against Muslim practices and businesses.“From today onwards, each of you must become an unofficial civilian police force against Muslim mannerism. These so-called democrats are destroying the Sinhala race,” Gnanasara Thero, one of the mob leaders exhorted at the frenzied crowds. He also vented anger against evangelical Christians who, he claimed, were attempting to perpetuate Christian extremism in the country.

Another leading Bodu Bala Sena monk said that pluralistic values had robbed the Sinhala people of money, jobs and enterprise. “This is a Sinhala country; there is a global principle that minorities must reside in a country in a manner that does not threaten the majority race and its identity.”

Issuing a direct challenge to the government, the Bodu Bala Sena general secretary said the organisation would give the administration until March 31 to ban the halal certification.

“Don’t make us take the law into our own hands,” the monk announced in his ultimatum, pledging to commence a relentless anti-halal campaign until the government announced the ban halal products by March 31.

The Buddhist extremist group has been leading the charge on virulent anti-Muslim sentiment spreading in Sri Lanka that has led to several incidents against members of the Muslim community in recent weeks. Last week, Muslim shop owners in Narammala in the Kurunegala district received letters threatening them with death if they fail to vacate their places of business by March 31.

In January at another rally, orchestrated demonstrations against ‘halal’ labelled foods, Muslim owned businesses and Muslim places of worship were targeted by organised groups of Buddhist militants in the northwestern province of Wayamba.

Those protesters were more ominous in their intentions. Taunting and cheering, they carried highly provocative effigies. The demonstrators who went in procession with these offensive placards and effigy attempted to taunt and provoke the Muslims of the town. The police would not take action against such highly provocative taunts, assuming that it was sanctioned by high levels of the government.

If left unchecked, the actions of such fringe group of fanatics trying to inflame the existing peaceful relations between the island’s Sinhalese and Muslim population could only lead to violence. Although the Muslims in the north watched, muted and restrained, it is only a matter of time before these fanatic radicals go berserk with their pent up resentment and hatred towards Muslims, and lead the island into an ethnic war.

While the majority of Sinhalese Buddhists is indeed peace-loving and has been living in harmony with other minorities over the centuries, the plague of militant Buddhists in recent days is gaining a strong foothold throughout the country. These are dangerous times. History so often tells us of how the good conscience of a silent majority has been swept away by the vicious rhetoric and actions of a militant minority.

In sharing a common religion with the island’s minority Muslims, Gulf Cooperation Council countries have a vested interest in ensuring their safety and security. The persecutions that have begun to form against them can in no certain terms be tolerated. The benign tolerance exhibited by the Sri Lankan government towards these militant groups must be viewed with alarm.

Sri Lanka is a recipient of a sizable mass of its national budget from the remittances of its workers in GCC countries. The GCC also provides most of the island’s energy needs. Many in the Gulf have been frequent visitors for tourism and business. So far relations have been harmonious.

But Gulf leaders must get the message across to the Sri Lankan government: The island must not embark on the perilous road of violent racial and ethnic divisions that could lead to unrestrained violence against not only the Muslims, but the other minorities on the island as well. Failure to heed that message must be compensated by strong action.

This is not an issue of sovereignty, but one of humanity.

I hope this article is widely publicised in all the middle eastern countries. Rajapaksa’s reliance on the Muslim countries to bail him out on the international stage whenever he is in difficulty is not going to be possible any more and the country’s foreign income will also suffer immensely. Rajapaksa is doomed.

I agree with the writer. Religious bigots of “Balu Sena” and JHU must be brought under control in Sri Lanka.

However, writer should strongly consider writing a similar article about Saudi Arabia. Try proposing religious tolerance to Saudis. He will be beheaded in no time.

Sri Lanka has a problem. We must handle it. Saudis are hardly qualified to preach to us though.

        Ajay,
You may not know that the Devil is very powerful as well. The Koran says, Devil even got Prophet Muhammad to read as if Allah has been reading. Read verses 22:52 and 53 of Sura xxii which says; “but God shall bring to naught that which Satan had suggested….”

Islamic militancy is far worse than Sinhala-Buddhist extremism. As much as I detest Sinhala-Buddhist fanaticism, let me point out that Sinhalese are actually liberal by nature. The problem here is economics. Once their standard of living improves significantly, once they are exposed to new ideas rather than propaganda from the Daily Noise, the nationalism that you see now will die down. Of course it will also take a totally new government, a massive downsizing of the armed forces, devolution for the Tamils, and many other things. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia is already filthy rich (look at its GDP) but it is the most intolerant country on the planet. That shows you how inherently extreme Muslim ideology is, which is worlds of difference apart from anything the Sinhala-Buddhists subscribe to.

Typical of you. You write about Saudi intolerance, and craftily connect it with ‘extreme Muslim ideology’. No one is here to support Saudi nor its system of governence. However, I will venture to pout that even you will shut your trap and sing hosanas in praise of that reghime, if you had access to a percentasge of that ‘filthy rich’ wealth. We know who are the real ‘Sinhala’ people in this country are from the current Custom Officers, Police Officers, Judges, politicians, virtually everyone from the very top (tsunami funds saga ) to the very bottom (boot licker). If anyone dares to be different, no place in governence. Bribery, corruption, family nepotism, minority exploitation, dishonesty, are all order of the day. Honesty has no place, neither does patriotism, only in lip service. No wonder this country cannot even get up on its knees, let alone stand up shoulder to shoulder with the rest of the developping world.

AYMAN! Are you admitting that throwing Saudi Money at poor Sri Lanka is a surreptitious operation (accompanied by the relatively recent introduction of the Hijab and Halal Branding)for the Islamaization of Sri Lanka? Indonesia and Maldives were once Buddhist countries.

        • 0
          0

Hijab and Halal have been there since the emerge of Islam 1400 years ago. Its not new. BBS adulterated the issue for petty motives.

If Indonesia and Madives were Buddhist countries how did they change. Whom to blame? Is it the wisdom of Islam or the stupidity of Buddhism. If the Buddhists follow or believe Buddha is the Lord or God who is the Lord and God of those who lived before Buddha. Who is the Lord or God of Buddha’s parents.

Read the Quran at least once in your life time before your death comes to you. There won’t any doubt left in your mind. You will save your soul from the punishment in the hereafter. I am not joking. its a brotherly invitation. Just once please.

          HERE IS HOW INDONESIA BECAME MUSLIM NATION;

Like the introduction of Indian civilization, the process of Islamization is obscure because of the lack of adequate historical records and archeological evidence. The archipelago was not invaded by outsiders and forcibly converted. Yet states that had converted to Islam often waged war against those that adhered to the older, Hindu-Buddhist traditions. Religious lines, however, do not appear to have been clearly drawn in Javanese statecraft and war.

          HERE IS THE STORY OF MALDIVES;

Islam came to the Maldives with the Arabian traveler Abul Barakhat Al-Bar Bari. Historical remains from as far back as 400 BC show strong evidence that Buddhism was widely practised among the people. Bar barrio’s story is again steeped in legend. However, the fact remains that Maldives is one of the few 100 percent Muslim nations in the world.

SO YOU WILL SEE NO MUSLIM ARMIES CAME AND CONQUERED THESE TWO COUNTRIES

THE RULERS ACCEPTED ISLAM AND THE PEOPLE FOLLOWED.

Perhaps that is why the process is referred to as “Surreptitious Islamization” even in Europe and the US.

Bismarck and Hitler were two powerful figures in recent times. Both were astute, pragmatic and ruthless. For Bismarck the anchor principle for success in politics and war was – never a war on two fronts. He carried it even to the point of moving away from the Kaiser. In the perception of Hitler, only a single political or social enemy should be identified and all the problems of a nation should be attributed to that enemy. If maladies are linked to many an adversary, then he says there will be loss of credibility in the leader so saying it.

In Sri Lanka the leadership has imbibed the best of both. From DS to now there was never a war on two fronts. To decimate the Indian Tamils, the Ceylon Tamil leader was embraced and the people he represented were shown as supportive of government’s action. The Tamils were to be marginalized from mid-fifties and were finished off by 2010. Till then the Muslims had to be and were kept in good humour. The need has ceased to exist. The programme now is to cut them to size. Hitler’s theory comes into play. Put all the issues afflicting the Sinhalese on the Muslims and relegate them.

What thereafter? The major ethnic entity of 75% will get a disproportionate share of the national product. Dr. Radhakrishnan once said “ Domination is the product of insecurity in the face of difference”. This play we see now will be in full force in the years to come. Yet the national problem will not abate. BBS the SL version of Khmer Rouge in its incipient stage will burgeon to the needed proportion. Nemesis is both the target and the destiny. Truth like medicine is too bitter to swallow.

All peace loving Sri Lankans who are committed to a United Sri Lanka, would like the country in One Piece and they do not wish external interference’s with its governance and would like their elected leaders to focus on developing the country and strengthen its position and patiently overcome the undesirable elements within the nation whose main aim is to cause division among communities. These parasite are more dangerous than all International Bullies put together. The beauty of Multilingual should pave the way to the attitude of Live and Let Live.

The colossal misunderstanding of our time is the assumption that insight will work with people who are unmotivated to change. Communication does not depend on syntax, or eloquence, or rhetoric, or articulation but on the emotional context in which the message is being heard. People can only hear us when they are moving towards them, and they are not likely to when our words are pursuing them. Even the choicest words lose their power when they are used to overpower. Emotions are the real figures of speech. If we keep on thinking of all the ways in which others Cheated us, Fought with us, Degraded us or Angered us; Our heart will forever be full of hatred. Learn to let go and start working towards solutions.

    – @native vaddah
Actually I am not as stupid as you think !I dont see the message the writer is trying to send to the Gulf countries. Perhaps U can enlighten me.

    – @GerardThurai
two wrongs doesn’t make a right.True. But how about “Physican heal thyself”

    – All I see is the writer threatening “strong action” instead of advising Sri Lanka.

What strong action can the Gulf countries take ?

    1. Cut off labor.
Sri Lanka is already in the process of trying to cut down the demeaning ‘housemaid’ labor to the GUlf.Sri Lanka is a middle income country & possibly can afford to look for alternatives like Skilled labor to Korea, Singapore etc..

    2. Impose An Oil embargo
There are many others like Venezuela, Russia, Nigeria etc who can fill in that gap if that happens. Even the Iranians will continue the oil supply as they hate Saudis

    3. Vote against Sri Lanka at UNHRC
These resolutions don’t mean Jack. USA and India do not want a divided Sri Lanka. Most that will happen is some UN team coming to Sri Lanka to go through the motions of investigating so called war crimes.

    4. Send Saudi Army to invade .
Oooooo…we are scared ! Fighting battle hardened Si Lankans in a jungle setting ( as opposed to an open desert setting ) won’t be fun .

Besides there are bigger fish like India & China swimming in the Indian Ocean of South Asia and Saudis will be like the sardines swimming with the sharks.

5 I have one word for those who talk here. Myanmar. The Gulf nations could do nothing to help the myanmar muslims who took a terrible beating from the rakhine buddhists except to plead to be allowed to establish a OIC ( organization of Islamic Countries )office in Yangon, which was also denied.

Freindly advice is always good, but making veiled threats will actually make matters only words.

I strongly believe that subjecting helples Sri Lankans to harsh punishments like 100lashes for frivolous charges like “black magic ” or “staring at a child while wearing a string” is one of the reasons that is agitating Buddhists in Sri Lanka against Islam

Ajay – If the LTTE was a product of decades long injustice and discrimination against the Tamil Nation, is the current militancy of the Buddhist Sinhala far right – BBS/SR – a response to similar Muslim
excesses, either by omission or commission on their part? It is good steps are being taken to mitigate the gathering heat but the “reasons” vomited by senseless and angry defenders is equally injurious.

But the inane Rajapakses, as pointed out by many serious commentators here, commit the mistake in that stupidity two wrongs will make one right – in trying to interfere with sensible health policies on birth control. As mentioned, there has been absolutely no chance given to a national debate in this vital question. Surely, the Rajapakse Family alone cannot make a decision in this regard. Knee-jerk State reaction to contain the engineered baby-boom in sections of the population is not the answer. It requires experts from all relevant quarters to sit down and arrive at a policy decision – by consensus. Why indeed was not the matter studied in seriousness earlier and timely action taken then?

I must add, while there are several Muslim commentators in these pages looking at matters in perspective, pronounce calmly and enhance the quality of debate, there are a few visceral misguided religious bigots out to “start fights” – in the culture of their suspect breeding I referred to earlier. When I “ended” my debate with one obstinate extremist, here he was a few days ago spitting venom in his congenital Mariakade culture of raised sarong and vulgar language – rarely seen in these pages. I hope the creature has recovered – because on the day he came out with the toxicity the man showed all the qualifications to be confined to the nearest mental sanatorium. I expect he has washed his keyboard with the large quantity of soap and water that would have been necessary to cleanse the filth.

    Senguttuvan

This surely must be the limit of cowardice displayed by the worst example of the species of Homo Sapiens! It is obvious that Senguttuvan who failed to meet my challenge to his BIGOTTED, ISLAMAPHOBIC innuendos and invectives resorts to Sakkilli sewer language. Just to quote this rodent …”a few days ago spitting venom in his congenital Mariakade culture of raised sarong and vulgar language – rarely seen in these pages. I hope the creature has recovered – because on the day he came out with the toxicity the man showed all the qualifications to be confined to the nearest mental sanatorium. I expect he has washed his keyboard with the large quantity of soap and water that would have been necessary to cleanse the filth.”
If this is not gutter journalism what is? Is not the above quotation fitting enough to fit into that “BREEDING” that Sengu accuses me of. Why did not this bigot mention all this in the thread we were engaged in but chose to vent his rotten spleen in another thread, hoping against hope that it will escape my notice?? I ended the thread referred to as follows:
” I have never ever been questioned about my integrity ever, and this covers a wide spectrum of people of all ethnicities ( including Jews of whom I had a close friend) till this charlatan, the pseudo intellectual, this Islamaphobe, this Liar Senguttuvan alluded to me as such! But in the true spirit of Islam I forgive him! I also pray that God in His Grace will remove the bitterness in his heart and guide him to search and be able to distinguish Truth from falsehood.” Unquote.
I invite the readers to decide if this was gutter language ? Surely the mendacity of this man has no limits whatsoever! He attempted to distort what I wrote to mean an insult to CT and have me blacklisted. In a moment of annoyance for questioning my integrity I called him what I did above, and then showing remorse for my outburst I forgave him! Of course I should have known that one’s humility will be appreciated only by those who by nature or by birth are humble themselves. The arrogant know only to show their false pride. The arrogant [Edited out] even if he shouts himself hoarse cannot escape the fact that he still remains [Edited out].

    – If they have the temerity to offer unsolicited advice and ask questions in regard to how Sri Lanka conducts it’s internal religious affairs, then others do have the right to ask questions about how they conduct their religious affairs in return

    – fair enough ?

    -Pimp is as pimp does.

    – Don’t try to teach me theories. For your information I have more education than you would ever care to think.

    – Here is something for your little mind to digest. 10/1 multiplied by 100 is 1000% . Comprehende ?

    American Mama or Yankee pimp,

“Here is something for your little mind to digest. 10/1 multiplied by 100 is 1000% . Comprehende ?”

I am bit thick however my elders tell me that mathematically no such thing exist as 1000%.

It is the American way of exaggerating things not valid in mathematics. Here in my jungle we say 1000 times. If you need any help with mathematics we have a pool of elders who can help you, of course free of charge.

    You say:

“Don’t try to teach me theories. For your information I have more education than you would ever care to think”

    I can see that.

sshhh…just between the two of us…where did you get your higher education…Oman?

Just kidding.. I am beginning to like you..You are just my type

My elders are in California… not in Bintanne like yours. You need to get out more and not stick to Newtonian mathematics. This is the age of Einstein and Schroedinger remember ?

Let’s stick to the topic at hand shall we ?

My elders taught me few things that you will never learn in the schools manned by stupid Sinhalese and stupid Tamils.

“Let’s stick to the topic at hand shall we ?”

Lets talk about the difference between % and times (ratios).

If you are a learned person you would have displayed bit humbleness not the sort of arrogance comes with qualification without wisdom.

Today, I went to the beach front with my kids. I found a sea shell and
gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She
put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and
it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!
