Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake is all poised to hand over the post of Sales Manager United Kingdom to his Royalist brother in law Gihan Malalasekara, especially with the post advertised in a tailor made manner a second time around, to suit the former Flight Attendant and make all other senior staffers ineligible to apply for the post, sources from within the airline’s Commercial Department told Colombo Telegraph.
The job which was advertised first in Feb 2015 was re-advertised again with the closing date set at 2nd October 2015.
Photo – Two BILs
The newly inserted clause states that “This is a local appointment and the applicant should be free to live and work in the UK without a need for a work or any other permit”.
“This post was never a local appointment and if that was the case it would have been included in the first ‘Staff Vacancy Notice’ put out earlier in February. This inclusion was done solely to accommodate Malalasekara, as he has now been living in the United Kingdom for the last two decades and knock out other senior airline staff members who were clamoring for the post” said an airline employee on condition of anonymity.
Gihan Malalasekara who initially worked for the national carrier known then as Air Lanka, resigned in the early nineties when in the capacity of an In Flight Cabin Supervisor.
To date he has never held a managerial position in the airline, as he re-joined Sri Lankan Airlines as a Sales Executive whilst living in London.
The national carrier was featured in a Sunday newspaper on the 4th October 2015, highlighting a recent award it had won in India. The Society for Human Resource Management had acknowledged the airline for ” Excellence in Human Resource – South Asia”.
Head of Human Resources Pradeepa Kekulawala speaking about the achievement was quoted in the newspaper saying ” the achievement also identifies the airline as a pioneer and trend setter in the Asian Region”.
Speaking to Colombo Telegraph an airline staffer said that his Head of HR Kekulawala was correct in making that statement, as even the appointment of the new incoming Chief Executive Officer Capt. Suren Ratwatte was based more on his brother Charitha Ratwatte‘s closeness to Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe than his ability for this post. As for Gihan Malalasekara and his soon tipped to be appointment, these are the trends Kekulawala is referring to.
It was President Maithripala Sirisena who initially set this bad precedence by pulling the wool over his voters eyes, when he went on to appoint his brother P.G. Kumarasinghe as the Chairman of Sri Lanka Telecom. President Maithripala Sirisena prior to the Presidential Elections earlier in January said that one of the reasons he quit the former regime led by Mahinda Rajapaksa was due to nepotism.
Further President Sirisena shocked his countrymen when he turned a blind eye to his daughter Chathurika‘s hautiness, who was seen on national television travelling from village to village in the Pollanaruwa District accompanied by police officers and government officials on the pretext of informing villagers of her father’s dream and also using her visits as a fact finding mission.
President Sirisena recently drew more flak for taking his son Daham to the United Nations General Assembly in the United States of America at the expense of the tax payer.
The precedence the President has set does not augur well for the future, as many others such as Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake and Minister of Ports Arjuna Ranatunga have now gone on to exploit and endorse their nepotism stunts.
Minister Karunanayake went on to earlier appoint his brother in law and retired policeman T.M. Bangsa Jayah to the post of Managing Director of Sri Lanka Insurance and Minister Ranatunga is now reported to shortly appoint his brother Dhammika Ranatunga to the post of Chairman Ports Authority in his Ministry.
The Colombo Telegraph has been unable to reach Ravi Karunanayake for comment.

RE: Nepotism Grows: FM Ravi K Set To Appoint His Other BIL To Sri Lankan Airlines Top Post

1. No MaRa MaRa Chatu MaRa Amana MaRa
2. No While Vans

5. No nepotism

How many of the above are we getting? Half full glass?
Are we going to clear another jungle and have an Airport?

Well, Getafix, we expected that not only things be done right, but to be seen to be so as well.
Ravi has just proven us wrong, hasnt he? And that is, despite all his earnest pleadings in support of Yahapalanaya and elimination of family bandyism in the run up to the elections.
Tell you what, there were many who thought he didnt quite fit the UNP matrix led by the squeaky clean Wickremasinghe. Interesting to see who will succeed Wickremasinghe one day.
At this rate, it mayn’t be Ravi for sure!

Ex UL employee / October 5, 2015
In fairness to the individual mentioned here, few facts need to be highlighted. This job was for the past 15 years held by UK local appointments, only the last person was sent from Colombo two years ago. Also the mentioned individual may be eligible to apply, he is alongside with four others in UK office and over similar numbers fron European offices and any applicant from outside the company ( as the vacancy has been publicly advertised in UK for outside candidates) So instead of prejudging and bringing prejudice to one individual who happens to be a BIL of a minister of an unrelated ministry ( from finance, not aviation or state enterprises) let us wait till the recruitment process is over.
/
Rosie / October 5, 2015
Thank you for your honest and unbiased facts. This particular vacancy was earlier advertised internally only in February 2015. But this time it was open to all of UK & EU applicants. As a matter of fact this position was always held by UK local applicants for the last
22 years. Just that the last applicant who was sent for ‘offline sales’ was absorbed to this position due to some senior sales staff leaving. Further more my husband has been working for Sri Lankan Airlines from the time he left school (1984) And when he migrated to the UK he rejoined UL UK Cargo and worked his way up. It is worth mentioning that he has worked from Cabin crew, Cargo Sales, Airport Duty Officer, Ticketing Sales Support and Sales Representative and now he is Flysmiles Executive (23 years in total). Anyone who has dealt with him will always have something good and positive to say, I am sure. He has been penalised because of his relationship to his brother in law, right through the time when his BIL was in the Opposition. I think it is time that people give him a chance to be recognised for what he Stands for and the experience he has, to do this job. Further more he is a Man with strong principles, integrity and commitment. He has proven his calibre throughout College as a great Sportsman and committed loyal employee. He has further proven to be a great Father by bringing up two wonderful children who are both professionals – A Doctor and A Lawyer. So I state my case, for all the jealous and malicious people who are trying to spoil his name. And by the way this post is not a Chairman, CEO or Director’s post, it is only a Sales Manager’s post. This is all to pave the way for their favourite to get this position……
/
srilal / October 5, 2015
Rosie ,
“I think it is time that people give him a chance to be recognised for what he Stands for and the experience he has, to do this job. “
according to your argument , it looks like a done deal ! has he already been elevated/promoted to the Sales Manager position through the back door ?
obviously for you , he is the best husband and the farther for your children among other good qualities of him , that’s understandable , but this wouldn’t/shouldn’t be an automatic selection criteria for the job . having said all these , it looks like your hubby perfectly fits for the mould , our only concern is , there shouldn’t be any favours/influence from out side parties . let the management decide and pick the best candidate purely based on merit .
Good luck ( if he hadn’t been selected yet) .

On the practical side of UK it’s whom you know that carries the business forward. A woman from Gampha was given Labour ticket for 10 years because she was known to Chandrika (she made her millions and was exclusive)
When Yahoo was found to be financially unviable the owner did not sell it to Alibaba but got a qualified woman who knew the business world as the new CEO.
When Rosie says it’s a manager’s position after 28 years its heartening because most graduate whites join as managers or within 2 years take up the management job.
I think this is a non-issue rolled off the collage CT newsroom.
Hope he gets the job and more business for the airline.
/
Ela kolla / October 5, 2015
Rosie,
You as the wife and the sister of the dear minister, is quite confident your Husband has already got the job. Wonder how, when the vacancy advertisement is still open. The closing date is 29 of OCT by the way. If there is no Nepotism how are you soooooo sure you Hubby will get the job. Did the Finance minister have a private interview?
You talk about honor and integrity….. Feel sad about the future of the airline
/
colin / October 5, 2015
Dont worry Rosy reading about Gihans experience in the airline industry he is surely amongst the best suited for the job.Sri Lankan owes a gratitude that Gihan is taking up this post instead of some dumb clot being appointed as may have been done been done sometimes in the past.
Rosie you could see those who criticise Gihans appointment green with envy.
Carry on Gihan and be just deaf to this form of criticism and also prove to the critics that you can deliver the goods. I am positive you can and also be able to silence the grumblers

We must ask Sarath De Alwis ( the journo and my former boss at UL ) to share his thoughts on this piece.
During his time as Country Manager for UK, this was a posting from Colombo. As my ex-UL colleague mentions, this has changed within the last 15 years and reverted back to a posting. It is normal business practice to change one’s policies along the way.
In my opinion, this must remain a posting, so folks from UL Head office can up skill in the field. It should also allow those currently serving in UL LON to apply for the post.
Thanks for reading.

Yes but consider what Ravi said before (CT link off this article)
In a miraculous turn of events at SLIC, the Finance Minister was quoted to have told Lanka Business Online “it’s better to appoint a go getter rather than an inefficient professional. In insurance you have to appoint go getters rather than inefficient people and the revenues have increased 35 percent for the past four months. What more do you want? You should see how efficiently the Insurance Corporation runs now” the Finance Minister was quoted to have said.
Man alone has invented a civilisation, and this is not something to be lightly dismissed.
Run across any hall of honour, with statues of the great men of history lining the corridor, and you will perceive that the rationality of conduct is probably the last thing to be recalled from their lives.
Is it not plain that `passion` rather than reason rules the world at large??

Unuth ekai, munuth ekai. Same story. Same old wine in a new bottle. The difference is Colombo Telegraph. If not for CT, the local SL media is still servile, subservient and hypocritical. No one dared to ask how Ranil’s businessmen cousin who no longer practices medicine was appointed to the board of Lanka Hospitals/Apollo to replace Gotabaya. The fools in the UNP salivated and said how Gota “OWN” a hospital etc when all he did was be the Government’s representative and quit as soon as his brother lost. Sirisena appointed his brother: not one SL newspaper dared to utter a peep. Ravi K appointed his police sergeant to a big lucrative State owned insurance corporation like how Chandrika appointed her cousin. Now he wants to appoint his BIL. Ravi K is ethically challenged and was always arrogant. NO ONE CARES IN SL. One set of booruwas replaced by another set of booruwas.

This has got to stop. At least, some public spirited citizen or ngo should challenge these appointments before the Supreme Court through writ procedures. Looks like the curse of Nepotism is back with us, judging by the information in this post!
If Maithripala wants to restore some amount of credibility in his administration that promised us so much and got us to vote for him, he better make some swift changes and order his ministers to stop any hint of nepotism in their appointments.
He should begin by apologising for his shortsightedness in including his family members in areas that resulted in criticism against his ‘broken promises’ about halting nepotism and then get all those cut-outs removed and chastise those bum-suckers for erecting them.
That would be a good start, otherwise the gradually eroding confidence we had in him will start to snowball and bury him in the end!

Could anyone tell me how Ravi appoint to Sri Lankan Airlines as it doesnt come under him. Gihan Malalasekera if he suitable appoint him and his long stay in UK will be an added qualification than just sending a first timer to UK.
It was highly unnecessary to bring Royal College in this criticism if Gihan went to Royal and Ravi too and they too must have been years apart so what the heck?
This article looks like the initiative of some disgruntled employee of the airline and trying to pin point the school connections just to drive forward his case. The appointment of Suren Ratwatte as CEO of Sri Lankan and mention of he being Charitha Ratwatte’s brother is another case in point of the initiater of this article and it clearly brings ou his motive.
Suren is a good appontment as he was a senior pilot of Emirates and a man who knows his onions about flying and also as an administrator.Dont forget the Capt of an airliner should not only be trained in flying the aircraft but he must be also a good administrator as he is the boss when the plane is in the air. I am sure Surn would have had a thorough training in both aspects at Emirates so is well suited for the post of CEO of Sri Lankan Airlines

Well first of all Pradeepa kekulawala should not be in the airline after all the dicoveries done at the probe. He is a master of sexual favourations and overseas traveler using company tickets and money. Recently he celebrated his birthday in Vegas in style of course traveling using company tickets, while the employees are undergoing so many difficulties due to his personal sexual favors creating many clashes in the hr department it self. (Hr manager planning and analytics- his heart is stolen there) He is well known for exaggerating at awards and once won an award for top 100 hr professionals in the world where 90percent of the applicants are Indians. So this is a matter manipulating and reinterpreting the win to the media for his own benefit since no one is bothered to check the actual criteria.
In addition he was a close friend of minister sarana and now boasting in the organization I was a strong unp supporter. I request to take actions on the findings of the probe conducted few months ago.. SriLankan staff who came up and disclosed information for the boi has lost faith in the government. Pradeepa kekulawala being the head of hr has the most complaints.

Before coming into power the MS-RW team said they would work towards giving the media more freedom and bring a Freedom of Information Act but no sooner they came to power they imposed the most draconian law curbing the press – the Press Council Act.
And now we know the reason – to prevent the media and the public from getting to know about their dirty deals.
https://freemediasrilanka.wordpress.com/2015/07/05/slpi-and-its-constituent-partners-condemn-reactivation-of-press-council/
“Completely reversing an election promise of his to ensure the stoppage of direct and indirect threats and intimidation against print media personnel and their owners, the question arises if this is the short-term and long-term programme he promised in his election manifesto to protect freedom of all media personnel.
On the contrary, President Sirisena has proceeded to, illegally re-constitute the Press Council’s tribunal without even the basic courtesy of consulting stakeholders as he is, in any event, bound to do by law under sections 3(b)(i) and 3(b)(ii) of the said law.”
https://cpj.org/2015/07/sri-lanka-moves-to-re-establish-restrictive-media-.php
“President Maithripala Sirisena announced the decision on July 2, and appointed new members to the council that day, according to news reports. The reason for the decision is unclear. The president did not consult any local media houses or press organizations, according to local press freedom organizations which called the move illegal. Under the 1973 Press Council Law, the president must consult stakeholders before re-constituting the council, the groups said.”

This is unbelievable, there are so many individuals in UK itself suited for this position than this Rouge. There have been reports that this guy is tapping Flysmiles customers who call the UK call center through different channels and getting a commission. Also he comes from Cabin crew and Cargo back ground. How can a person with those sort of experience run a passenger sales team. I don’t think he even has a clue about pricing. Good luck to Sri Lankan airlines in UK.

Nothing to expect from this minister. His integrity has always been in question. While the court proceeding for the money laundering case, the post of finance minister was given to him. Within two hearings he was found not guilty.
Suddenly our courts become so efficient. Now, he wants to bring back the laundered black money to Sri Lanka by giving them ( i mean him) blanket amnesty.

I strongly agree with Rasika on the head of hrs matter, as when the person who is considering the human factor of the organization is not up to good. Well there re so many who fall in to that category but this one leads the role by I fact dancing with in his department it self. Heard that he is misusing all the budget allocated to the department as he wish and manipulating the reasoning to the director board including Sunil peiris who is the hr director. its high time for Sunil Peiris to step and take the seat or appoint some one from outside the organization. We need to correct this place first as most of the mishandling and corruption starts here. Just look into the department and check how many of his friend’s daughters are working with no work experience in executive categories! Shame on the ul higher management!

Don’t know what the fuss is about. Gihan used to be the Cargo Manager and he has worked the past 10+ years in various roles in SriLankan in London. In the previous regime a foreigner was hired and Gihan worked in the sales office. He is the best candidate for the job of Sales Manager. He is more than qualified for the job. Whenever Ravi K becomes a minister all his in laws occupy his ministry. This happened when he was Minister of trade about 102 years ago. They occupy the ministry and start giving orders to the officers in the ministry. They are very rude and do not understand that power and authority are temporary things. Gihan Malalasekera is considered a gentleman who is not worried about politics. If he gets the job, his wife will be the real Sales Manager and that is a real danger for other staff. So best thing for him is to pack his wife to Colombo like last time when Ravi K was a minister. He can then do his job peacefully!
