Nepotism Grows: FM Ravi K Set To Appoint His Other BIL To Sri Lankan Airlines Top Post

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake is all poised to hand over the post of Sales Manager United Kingdom to his Royalist brother in law Gihan Malalasekara, especially with the post advertised in a tailor made manner a second time around, to suit the former Flight Attendant and make all other senior staffers ineligible to apply for the post, sources from within the airline’s Commercial Department told Colombo Telegraph.

The job which was advertised first in Feb 2015 was re-advertised again with the closing date set at 2nd October 2015.

Two BILS Ravi K and Gihan Malalasekara

Photo – Two BILs

The newly inserted clause states that “This is a local appointment and the applicant should be free to live and work in the UK without a need for a work or any other permit”.

“This post was never a local appointment and if that was the case it would have been included in the first ‘Staff Vacancy Notice’ put out earlier in February. This inclusion was done solely to accommodate Malalasekara, as he has now been living in the United Kingdom for the last two decades and knock out other senior airline staff members who were clamoring for the post” said an airline employee on condition of anonymity.

Gihan Malalasekara who initially worked for the national carrier known then as Air Lanka, resigned in the early nineties when in the capacity of an In Flight Cabin Supervisor.

To date he has never held a managerial position in the airline, as he re-joined Sri Lankan Airlines as a Sales Executive whilst living in London.

The national carrier was featured in a Sunday newspaper on the 4th October 2015, highlighting a recent award it had won in India. The Society for Human Resource Management had acknowledged the airline for ” Excellence in Human Resource – South Asia”.

Head of Human Resources Pradeepa Kekulawala speaking about the achievement was quoted in the newspaper saying ” the achievement also identifies the airline as a pioneer and trend setter in the Asian Region”.

Speaking to Colombo Telegraph an airline staffer said that his Head of HR Kekulawala was correct in making that statement, as even the appointment of the new incoming Chief Executive Officer Capt. Suren Ratwatte was based more on his brother Charitha Ratwatte‘s closeness to Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe than his ability for this post. As for Gihan Malalasekara and his soon tipped to be appointment, these are the trends Kekulawala is referring to.

It was President Maithripala Sirisena who initially set this bad precedence by pulling the wool over his voters eyes, when he went on to appoint his brother P.G. Kumarasinghe as the Chairman of Sri Lanka Telecom. President Maithripala Sirisena prior to the Presidential Elections earlier in January said that one of the reasons he quit the former regime led by Mahinda Rajapaksa was due to nepotism.

Further President Sirisena shocked his countrymen when he turned a blind eye to his daughter Chathurika‘s hautiness, who was seen on national television travelling from village to village in the Pollanaruwa District accompanied by police officers and government officials on the pretext of informing villagers of her father’s dream and also using her visits as a fact finding mission.

President Sirisena recently drew more flak for taking his son Daham to the United Nations General Assembly in the United States of America at the expense of the tax payer.

The precedence the President has set does not augur well for the future, as many others such as Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake and Minister of Ports Arjuna Ranatunga have now gone on to exploit and endorse their nepotism stunts.

Minister Karunanayake went on to earlier appoint his brother in law and retired policeman T.M. Bangsa Jayah to the post of Managing Director of Sri Lanka Insurance and Minister Ranatunga is now reported to shortly appoint his brother Dhammika Ranatunga to the post of Chairman Ports Authority in his Ministry.

The Colombo Telegraph has been unable to reach Ravi Karunanayake for comment.

I agree, simply because a person has a relationship or other connections should not be disqualified from applying or being selected to a suitable position. If the person is suitably qualified/experienced and has a proven record of service in the related field, and stand out of the rest of the other contenders. Why debar him/her from being given the job? That is his/her right to get the job. I know there could be heart burns among the “local” (SL) applicants who want to get into this position to be placed in UK for varying benefits. But looking at it from the Airlines side, it is very economical to select a person from the country who knows what it is to be and what has to be done withing his know how of his chosen choice of residence.

Coming back to that “Prestigious Award” by the so called “Society of Human Resources Development”, no one knows what the “CRITERIA” adopted were in making that assessment. Were it the “Stated Policies and Procedures laid down in Manuals” or facts of “Actual Working of those Policies and Procedures”; “The Productivity based concepts” that contribute to the “Bottom Line” of the organization; “The well being of the workforce and their Development measured in actual achievements” etc….etc… However it is VERY STRANGE to find, if this HR Organization is such “PRESTIGIOUS”; to have OVERLOOKED the “Damning Report” put out after an Investigation in which strong criticisms have been leveled against the very HR Manager and its functioning. Isn’t there something very “FISHY” about that “Prestigious Award”?

    DONT TARNISH HIS NAME .

Gihan Malalasekera desevres the post of Sales Manager with his 23 years of service to the airline since joining straight from leaving school . He has worked from Cabin Crew,Cargo sales ,Airport Duty Officer ,Ticketing Sales Support and Sales Representative and currently holding the position of Flysmiles
    Executive .
A gentleman to his finger tips . A gentleman with strong principles, integrity and commitment .
Gihan has been penalised because of his relationship to his Brother in Law politician for many years and its time now he be recognised and deserves the appointment .

Looks like the lovely wife is typing with a different name. Ha ha soooo funny. We thought the last regime was bad. All are the same. Family politics. A gentleman with strong principles should stay away from all this and do good for the airline in the current role rather than wanting more power. Watch out area manager, your seat will be next.

Shiiraan Nooramith, I agree. Gihan is a most suitable person for this post. CT is printing anything and everything to discredit Sirisena. This is a non-story. London Sales Manager? Come on! Its not as if he was made a director.

Of course I understand why these stories are appearing. Sirisena has appointed dozens of UPFA thugs and Ranil is unable to create good governance completely.

These are the buggers whom the Sri lankans vote into power. So be it.

Ravi K is the finance minister, not the aviation minister. This is a non-story. Colombo Telegraph once again producing garbage reporting.

      @Marven:

“Ravi K is the finance minister, not the aviation minister”

So what? Dont you know that as Finance Minister he wields enough power to influence any other minister, aviation or other to fall in line with him? If officially this doesnt work then the ‘You scratch my back I’ll scratch yours” philosophy common among this bunch of rogues and nation looters is sure to work. Just look at the impudence behind the Central Banks Bond scam where evn Ranil turns a blind eye to the Father-in-law-Sin-in-law manipulation of the countrys finances. All because he knew the bandit family at a personal level and was entertained in their home whenever he visited Singapore. And mind you, Ravi K is no innocent white lily either. His hands have already been tainted enough through his earlier portfolios. eg The Sathosa scam and selling CWE takaran to the indians.

I am writing as a frequent passenger of Srilankan, I have never met Gihan in person, but have spoken to him on many occasions. He is very courteous deals in a professional manner and a brilliant salesmen.

Well, now we know that Gihan has 3 very close friends who would walk the tightrope to leave positive comments for him. Maybe he would be able to give a kickback to his brother-in-law by sending free foreign liquor since the local prices are sky rocketing.

    Honorable Ravi,

I found interesting information given by you. What has happened to law and order and good governance? Down the drain?

“The Government is requesting citizens holding Swiss bank accounts to redeposit the cash in the country’s banking system with a promise that no questions will be asked.”

No questions asked? Is this the correct way to promote rule of law and good governance? Do you have the power to order different authorities not to implement laws regarding tax, money laundering etc?

Have you not understood that most of Diaspora are no longer SL citizens. Are you planning to share information on these investments with foreign tax authorities? Will you order our tax and other authorities and banks not to report despite tax agreements?

“We have estimated about $ 10 to $ 15 billion is being held by our own diaspora overseas. We are inviting them to bring those monies back with an assurance to offer rates several times more than those offered in international money markets. In Switzerland they are getting a zero return and they can come and get 2% to 3% interest over here,” Karunanayake told the media last Friday (2).”

Who in SL pays 2-3% for CHF accounts? Maybe the bankrupt state banks?

“Noting that the Government is positioning Colombo as a financial centre, he asserted that before too long Sri Lanka is going to be the alternate Singapore and Dubai.”

I don’t know about Dubai but in Singapore the government and finance minister would never invite investments without any questions like you are doing. Is this the image of a future financial center with law and order or an offshore island for dirty money?

“Highlighting that Singapore and Dubai were now overrun and expensive, he asserted that this was a great opportunity for the Sri Lankan diaspora to help the country. “We are paying outside people 6% to 7%; bring your own hard-earned money back to the country.”

Who pays 6-7% on foreign currency deposits? Maybe you mean rupee accounts? I don’t believe that foreigners want rupee accounts.

      Honorable Ravi,

      How competent are you?

According to Bank of Ceylon they offer 3,5% interest for a 12 months USD deposit. This is the highest interest rate the bank offers for FX. For CHF the interest rate is only 1,25% for 12 months. Are you going to double the existing offers to attract FX?

      http://web.boc.lk/index.php?route=rates/rates

See also the following article in the Financial Times of today.

Is the Finance Ministry going to instruct the Exchange Control Department, Inland Revenue Department and other necessary institutions NOT to do the work they are legally bound to do? Would this be the correct signal for the international community showing our progress with rule of law and good governance?

“If we are to follow Singapore and the UK standards, all significant inward remittances need a declaration of source of funds,” East West Holdings Group Chairman Nahil Wijesuriya told the Daily FT.

He went on to say that it was mandatory for every bank to know the source of funds according to international monetary regulations.
“There is no way that a politician can say that no questions will be asked. Banks receiving these considerable amounts of funds are bound to know their customers and adhere to the money laundering guidelines,” he explained.
Karunanayake expressed last week that this would be the first step in creating a financial hub in Sri Lanka and assured that the Finance Ministry would instruct the Exchange Control Department, Inland Revenue Department and other necessary institutions to bring in any other satisfactory measures in order to fortify investor confidence.”

The same way as saying we are not signatories to ICC(neither are USA and India)
Lanka plans to get away from this because the Americans are interested in its own citizens evading tax and an international ban on cash held by terrorist.
So Tamils living away will not bother as there are many more offshore islands in the EU.
Folk with this type of money have smart advisers who are aware of other niches in the world of banking. – HSBC is an exposed entity in the US for laundering of crime/drug money.Give it 5 years and Osborne would fine them heavily and get rid of them from UK.

I am sure gihan is a nice guy and good father- but to head the sales team of SriLankan’s flagship station contrary to what his wife say is a daunting task , taking into to consideration the fierce competition the airline faces with all the middle eastern giants, dumping their capacity in London, at next to nothing fares. Getting the necessary fares and retaining market share is a tough tough job .26 years of experience in the capacity Gihan has worked is not enough to drive this task…. I believe when looking or asking for a job, one should be honest and realistic on if one can handle the job…. if one has what it takes to do the job. The airline is going through some of the toughest times it has ever been through, and one of the main reasons is the management, putting the wrong person in the wrong place, because of government interference.as a result, we; each and every Srilankan suffers. What I ask is please act responsibly towards this airline… towards this country. Gihan, probably has done a good job in the airport and onboard… but 2 years as a executive handling commercial matters does not give him the required qualification to be sales manager- that brings in the highest network revenue of the airline. If he gets the job, it will be because and only because he is brother of Ravi- and I do believe this needs to stop

This fucked up politicians never gonna take this country to the next level
Its all about political appointments.I work on my own business in a foreign country & obviously i know how those governments appoint state employees
This is absolutely ridiculous. We all depend on supports from other developing nations but no future plans for development.

Those two parties ruled my country for over 5 decades, what they have done to raise the economy.all fucking Royalists,Thomians fucking masterminds taking over higher posts.Lets see how they gonna do

In general We ,as a nation ,don’t have guts to stand as a courageous nation and stick to a plan to develop this beautiful country.anyone believe or not we are so far behind other nations in terms of technology ,innovation and entrepreneurship.

Gihan Mallasekera is well suited for Sales Managers position. Although we have never met him he has been very helpful to us. We have been frequent Emirates passengers but Gihan managed to convert us to Sri Lankan passengers by
providing us with the best customer service. He handled our problem with a professional manner and we have flown with Sri Lankan airlines ever since. Gihan is a great asset to our National Air lines and as a UK resident we are proud to have him as Sales Manager.

I don’t know Gihan personally or even met him. However, what I can say from the numerous occasions I have had to speak to him in connection with my travel on Sri Lankan Airlines, either regarding matters related to FlySmiles or my tickets, he has been extremely efficient, helpful and courteous. He is also someone who never failed to return my calls – a quality of a true and decent gentleman. Our national airline needs people of his calibre and I sincerely hope he will be appointed to this very important position. I can’t understand why the fact that he is the brother-in-law of Hon Ravi Karunanayake should make him unsuitable when he has all the necessary credentials and I am certain he will be a greater asset to our airline as the UK Sales Manager.

If the Mohan Samarasinghe who has commented above is my old school mate thyen I too must echo his words as I know Mohan would express an honest opinion. I have no idea about how this vacancy occurred and I have no special interest in this except that whenever I have had to deal with SriLankan Airlines and Flysmiles UK in particular, Gihan Malalasekera has been very helpful. I agree with Mohan that Gihan does call back to inquire or to provide any information sought. In doing so he has always been courteous and helpful.
I can only comment about his work and dedication to help customers and no little or nothing about personal relationships.

What has him treating you politely have anything to do with this favorable appointment by his brother in law?. Further why is Ravi getting involved?. This type of appointments based on connections are going to multiply and spell the end to the Unp too. Will he get the job if Ravi wasn’t there?. Ofcourse not. Was the method to appoint a sales manager ethical and fair. Ofcourse not. The situation is self explanatory. Only these sri Lankans are so scheamy, so self indulgent. #OPENGOVERNMENT

Appointments due to favoritism & connections on get ahead within government is unacceptable. Policies, appointments and development decisions cannot benefit anyone in particular. Government cannot be used as a pawn to support any one individual company or party. What the heck is wrong with you people?. I mean the present government. The government ain’t the private sector. This is a no brainer. #getalife #disgusting, #embarassing

Great job colombotelegraph.com for bringing to light every move every one in government makes. No matter the significance the voter base must know everything. No wonder Mahinda censored the media. These johnnies come into power with the help of the common man but while inside they use the government for self gain and to promote and enrich their own. This is the only reason third world countries suffer, government is self indulgent. We need selfless politicians who work for the people and the country., instead of putting themselves first at every juncture.

Must continue the good work of exposing every decision and thought the government plans to execute.

So don’t misbehave and try to treat the government as your little private enterprise. Ranil has got a life line to rebrand the party. If you guys mess up, everyone can say good bye to the Unp. Don’t u contribute to that. Everyone is watching. Wise up?!!!!

The comments make for interesting reading. The simple fact is that Sri Lankan Airlines is the personal fiefdom of the government and they will have their favoured poodles in key positions. Several of the London appointments must be ministerial sycophants – regardless of any other relevant qualifications. These appointees are the gophers waiting to do the bidding of ministers and their acolytes. Failure to please will automatically trigger the ‘Peter Hill’ option. This is the favoured model for anything in which the government has a share, and it is one that is not likely to change.

Why are u all only talk about Gihan now? What about the promotion he got earlier. Is has promoted to an Executive but his main duty is posting Flysmile forms. He is an Executive post guy in Sri lankan.
Also what about the promotions other people got last few years. There were so many political promotions in London office.
