Venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha thera – leader of the People’s Movement for a Just Society denies being part of a meeting last night that was attended by President Rajapaksa where he was allegedly coerced into abandoning his call to field a common candidate at the upcoming election.
Sobitha thera, who might himself be the much anticipated common candidate at the upcoming Presidential elections, however told Colombo Telegraph that he was not part of such a meeting.
However, several news websites state that Sobitha thera was summoned to a meeting which took place at the residence of businessman and controversial politician Tiran Alles that was attended by President Rajapaksa, his brother Gotabaya and Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
According to the reports, as soon as Sobitha thera arrived at the meeting an agitated President had immediately questioned him as to whether he was plotting to ‘ruin him’.
However, following discussions with the President he had explained that it was not a personal attack but a call for establishing a just society in Sri Lanka to which the President had responded by stating that he would give a written undertaking to implement all of Sobitha thera’s requests including the abolition of the Executive Presidency within six months of his re-election. In return he has been asked to abandon the call to form a common opposition and field a common candidate at the upcoming election.
The reports state furthermore that he had asked for two days to consult with the other members of the movement stating that he cannot reach an arbitrary decision and Minister Silva and Gotabhaya are due to visit the monk at his temple tonight to obtain the verdict.
However, Sobitha thera speaking to Colombo Telegraph assured that his stance has not changed and denied web reports above.

Why is Sobitha Thera dilly dallying and wasting time instead of naming the joint opposition candidate for President?!!
The joint opposition candidate needs to be known URGENTLY needs to be done urgently so that the education of Sinhala Modadyas by the candidate and joint opposition can start.
As it is, everyone is waiting and Jarapassa is carrying on and way ahead in his illegal re-election campaign. What a bloody disaster Ranil Wickramasinghe the useless dictator of the UNP is. After 10 years in the opposition leadership he has done nothing to enable unity and is totally unacceptable as opposition candidate! CBK is the best and only bet to defeat Jarapassa. But it seems that Sobitha wants to be prez of Sinhala Modayas?! IN which case he should name himself immediately and stop wasting time…
The Sinhala Modayas need to be educated and rally round an opposition candidate as soon as possible if Jarapassa is to be defeated. If the Joint opposition has still not found a candidate to stand against MR it is truly pathetic! SOBITHA should stop being COY!
Clearly, he is angling for the post.

He has to dilly dally for the simple reason as he values his life more than anything else.
Please see below what happens when you go against the clan:
“The Fonseka arrest has led to a rift between the Rajapaksa leadership and four mahanayakas (chief monks) of the largest Buddhist sects. The arrest sparked the monks to raise broader issues of democratic governance and to call a Sangha Sabha (council of clergy) to discuss the situation. But the council was indefinitely postponed after the monks received bomb threats. Government apologists retaliated by promising that 500 temples would be split off from the main Buddhist sects and re-aligned with a lesser-known sect from Rajapaksas’ home region in the south.” the US Embassy Colombo informed Washington.

All this crap begs the question who nominated such uneducated, uncivilized thugs to highest political offices in Sri Lanka & why:
1. Under which criteria?
2. What was the selection process for a Presidential candidate from a leading political party?
3. Was there any vetting what so ever?
Both UNP & SLFP have no proper organizational structure to deal with such vital issues. It is all ad-hoc, knee-jerk & family based rubbish nation ends up having to deal with.
There is no reason to be surprised with this kind of behavior by the self-appointed King for lifetime.

Common candidate maiden media meeting a roaring success ; Incumbent President wrecked executive Presidency – CB
http://lankaenews.com/news/119
(Lanka-e-News- 11.Nov.2014, 2.30PM) The evils of the executive Presidency have been aggravated further by the present ruler’s reign . Therefore the political parties and groups that have united so far are having the strength to remedy this deplorably grave situation ,the former President and the likely common Presidential candidate, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaranatunge stated.
She made these queries via a special notification addressed to the representatives attending the maiden meeting convened by the political parties and groups yeaterday chaired by Ven. Sobitha Thera to decide on a common candidate .
The notification states thus :
Karu Jayasuriya whose name is being mentioned as a prospective common candidate also attended this meeting. However , without occupying a main seat , he sat with the other UNP leaders.
Ven. Sobitha Thera , opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe , Democratic party leader Sarath Fonseka , Democratic national front leader Mano Ganeshan , Sri Lanka (SL) Communist party politburo member Raja Uswetakeiyawa, Lanka Sama Samaja party central committee member lawyer Lal Wijenayake , National United Alliance leader Azad Salley , Arjuna Ranatunge M.P. , Mawbima Janatha party leader Hemakumara Nanayakkara , Nawa Sihala Peramuna leader Sarath Mahamendra , Ruhunu Janatha Peramuna leader Aruna De Soysa , Eksath Janatha Peramuna leader Sirimasiri Hapuarachchi, Sunil Jayasekera of the Free Media Movement , lawyer Upul Kumaraperuma of the lawyers organization for Democracy and member of former MP’s circle Anura Bastian participated in the discussions.
Senior leaders of the Sama Samaja and Communist parties participating in this media conference is an index that they are for an opposition common candidate though their leaders are with the government .This was most strikingly conspicuous. The full text of the notification from former President Chandrika sent to the representatives of maiden meeting reads thus :
”I am in deep appreciation of the foundation that is being laid today by the political parties, groups and citizens organizations, and to make an announcement in unison of the common program aimed at introducing profound changes to the political culture and governance of our country.
The breakdown of the legal foundation ; violation of the fundamental rights of the citizens ; the erosion of media freedom ; the destruction of the independence of the courts , police service and public service which are the cornerstones of Democracy have inflicted heavy damage on human freedom and democratic governance .
The limitless power of the executive Presidency had been the cause of this destruction. This had been further exacerbated by the methods adopted by the incumbent executive chief . At today’s high powered meeting it had been expressed in one voice that this event marks the initial program aimed at abolition of the executive Presidency , reviving the 17th amendment , resurrection of democratic governance and revival of the fundamental rights of the citizens.
It is my conviction this united effort will have the strength and courage to rebuild this country based on its best traditions that will respect humaneness , democracy and human rights. I extend my fullest support to this along with my blessings and best wishes .”

The American Revolution (HIST 116)
This lecture focuses on the best-selling pamphlet of the American Revolution: Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, discussing Paine’s life and the events that led him to write his pamphlet. Published in January of 1776, it condemned monarchy as a bad form of government, and urged the colonies to declare independence and establish their own form of republican government. Its incendiary language and simple format made it popular throughout the colonies, helping to radicalize many Americans and pushing them to seriously consider the idea of declaring independence from Britain.

President summons Sobhitha Thera to Tiran’s home!
Details Created On Thursday, 13 November 2014 14:06 Category: General
After the conclusion of the weekly cabinet meeting yesterday night (12), the president accompanied minister Nimal Siripala de Silva to the home of businessman MP Tiran Alles. Before arriving there, a message was sent to Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera, convener of the National Movement for a Just Society, to be there. When the president reached Tiran’s home, defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was already there.
On the president’s message, Sobhitha Thera went there, and seeing his arrival, the president asked him with much agitation, “Why, Apey Hamuduruwane? Are you going to ruin me?” In a calm tone, the Thera explained matters to the president, stressing that his fight is not against any individual, but is aimed at establishing a just society in Sri Lanka.
A tamed president then said he could give a written undertaking that all requests of Sobhitha Thera, including the abolition of the executive presidency, would be fulfilled within six months of his re-election. In return, he asked that moves to field a common candidate be abandoned.
The Thera asked for two days to consult other members of his organization as he cannot take a decision by himself. The president asked that the Thera’s decision be known to him before the announcement of the date for the presidential election. He also said that for further discussions on the matter, he would send Nimal Siripala de Silva and Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to Naga Vihara in Kotte at 9.00 pm tonight (13).

A secret alliance in the making!
HOT NEWS November 13, 2014 No Comments
A secret alliance it is learnt is in the making between the Convener of the Movement for a Just Society, Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero and senior members of the government.
Lanka Herald learns that Ven. Sobitha Thero has met with President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Ministers Nimal Siripala de Silva and Dullas Alahapperuma and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa yesterday (12) night.
The meeting it is learnt was coordinated by Democratic National Alliance (DNA) MP Tiran Alles. In fact the meeting had taken place at Alles’ residence.
Ven. Sobitha Thero had attended the meeting after participating in the rally organized by the Pivithuru Hetak organization against the executive presidency.
Details of the discussion are yet unknown.
However, it is learnt that Ven. Sobitha Thero is to meet with the government officials again at the Kotte Sri Naga Vihara.
The Thero has continuously called for the abolition of the executive presidency and his name has also figured in the list of names of common candidates for the next Presidential election.

“Are you trying to finish me?” – Sobhitha there threatened
“The Independent” has learnt from a very reliable source that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has summoned Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhita thero and has threatened the monk by asking whether he is trying to finish him.
According to reports President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Ministers Dullas Alahapperuma and Nimal Siripala da Silva have gathered at the residence of DNA MP Tiran Allas and have summoned the convener of the National Movement for a Just Society Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhita thero for a meeting.
There the thero and his reformist movement have been bombarded with criticism and the President has further accused the thero for not informing his proposals for the Constitutional Amendments Committee headed by Minister Nimal Siripala.
Mentioning the JHU MP Ven. Athuraliye Rathana thero, the President has said that even he did not inform about it before. According to sources, the President has spoken in an angered tone and has asked the monk whether they all are going to challenge him.
There the defense secretary is said to have warned Sobhitha thero that if he continues in the current path, certain old accusations might find their way to the surface and that it could damage the thero’s character.
They have finally informed that both the defense secretary and Minister SIripala would be coming to the Naga Viharaya, Kotte today at 9.00 pm to meet the thero and to settle down the matter permanently, sources say.

/
CHANAKYAN / November 13, 2014
What were the frightening obsessions in the President’s mind? First, A common candidate. The second that struck terror was Chandrika as common candidate. The CJ it is alleged has conveyed his opinion that she cannot contest a third time.
Is that enough to calm a troubled mind? No. Ven. Thero is the next formidable challenge. Take the wind off his sails by promising abolition of EP. This is the tactic. For acceptance credibility is nil. Why?
Is he in the same lineage as Harichandra, India’s legendary King, venerated as the apostle of truth? He said millenia back, come wind come weather, never shall I resile from my pledge.
Would he have heard of Patel’s promise to Mountbatten, “Whether the earth splits or the heavens fall, I shall not go back on my promise”.
Has the incumbent President even a pretense to higher values? Why would the Ven. Thero accept his words.
From third to nth a leader will be forthcoming at the crest of the surging Tsunami, the upsurge of the masses.

reports quoted from Richard Re,A Persisting Evil:The global
problem of slavery,Harvard International review,2002.It
says,in places as diverse as Nigeria,Indonesia and Brazil
at least 27 million people live in conditions of forced
bondage. Some sources believe the actual figures are 10
times as large.
An interview with Kevin Bales,2001 states, bonded laborers in
agriculture in India generate more than a fifty percent
profit per year for their slave holders and a return of more
than 800 percent is not at all uncommon for holders of sex
slaves. And while the price of slaves has gone down, the return
on the slave holder’s investment skyrocketed.
We read on a sort of regular basis, massage parlours, brothels
run by well known figures are raided and prostitutes from
countries like Thailand,China and Russia are flooding the
capital and arrests in action also reported.Casinos
encouraged very publicly and there are prominent figures
who are proudly involved and publicly celebrated! What do we
need for all these? Man power.Cheap man power at competitive
rates. It’s already clear who’s going to hire them.Thailand
is reportedly the only single country the world developed
for prostitution.A prominent Buddhist country.Taken these

‘I state that Gonawala Sunil was a notorious criminal who was imprisoned to for a long jail term but released on a presidential pardon obtained by his friend the then Prime Minister, Ranil Wickramasinghe’
One of the comments from the fraud fighter!

Sobitha Thera is the more acceptable face in Sri Lanka’s monkhood, unfairly thrashed by the likes of Gnanasara Thera. Given time, with him at the helm, we might regain the reputation destroyed by Gandasara Thera and his BBS.

There was something that went almost unnoticed in this alleged meeting. Mahinda Rajapakse had pledged to give a written undertaking to abolish the Executive Presidency six months after his re-election. You have to be naive or an imbecile to believe that. No President in any country (except perhaps Zimbabwe) wields so much power singlehandedly or with his siblings and if you think he will give that up just because of a promise, you belong in a mental institution.

With this kind of pressure mounting on the scoundrels who rule this country, they will become desperate.
Desperate people do desperate things. Be vigilant.

Everyone is a crook in Sri Lankan politics, Rajapakse included. You can argue about this till the cows come home. So Podi Andaya, your choice is no better, probably worse than any of his opponents. Unfortunately Lankan people just don’t have the sense to put rogues in their place.

Thank you Jango for respecting my contrary opinion and being civil about it unlike many public debaters here. Yes I agree that my choice is no better than the other aspirants to the throne but for me at least he delivered a war victory. I am eternally repeat eternally grateful for that. I do not look at RW or CBK or Ranatunge or Karu J or Sajith P as whiter than white leaders as some people here do.
