State Minister of Irrigation, Water Management and Disaster Management Range Bandara confessed that it was only after he drew his pistol that a technical college in Anamaduwa got off the ground.

Palitha Range Bandara made this confession while addressing a function to mark the launch of the Deduru Oya-Sengal Oya Project in Pallegama – Anamaduwa.
“When I tried to get an Ocean University built in the Puttalam District, the minister who was in charge of the relevant ministry opposed the decision. When I attempted to start a technical college here the vital documents were hidden. This forced me to draw the pistol from my waist because I knew that only by acting in this manner could I get things done.The Technical College was now about to become a reality,” he said.
“The President and the Prime Minister are too good. Therefore, the country needs people who could draw their pistols and get things done,” he said insinuating that the basic tenets of good governance are ineffective in getting things done.

What an idiot to come out with such a stupid statement in public, whether he actually pulled out a gun or not. Is he saying that we should all pull out guns to get things done in SL or is it only a privileged few who can do that? I am not in anyway defending Minister Ranga or any other uncouth politician. In reality, this is what Sri Lanka’s government and public sector has eroded to. One cannot get a damn thing done without being stern. JR learned this the heard way. Premadasa did this with reluctance even though his boyhood was from the slums. Mahinda did this for all to see and with super effectiveness. In my view, the only modern leader who did not have to do this was Whiky madam CBK who did nothing useful for the country.
