I know very well that AKD or the JVP at this point of time will be not in a position to reply candidly about the foremost position to Buddhism in SL’s constitution and the other related questions you have posed.
In that regard another commentator has also mentioned elsewhere in these columns that the JVP has yet to do a self criticism about it’s past mistakes if it is to be regarded seriously as electable.
It is exactly for that very reason why I have mentioned in my comment that all who value democracy, social justice, and secularism must struggle relentlessly against all corrupt fascistic oppressive ideologies.
The JVP today is not the JVP of 1971/88/89.
That in itself is a chink of light at the end of the tunnel for the people of SL.
It is yet a long way before it gets bright for them.

Most people don’t trust the JVP as they remember what they did. But the times have changed and the members as well. To give a good lesson to all the Rajapakhsas, Wickramasinghas and the others which are just turning positions and sites and promising everything just to keep in power to loot the country.
Now MR is raising the matter of salary hikes to private sector and public sector. This trick was used in every election. I wonder why so many people still believe all this things. Before election you get a slap on the shoulder, after election a kick in the butt. Wasn’t it each time like that. Sri Lanka need a complete change in politics. I don’t want to say that the JVP is the answer, but we should try it.

Things have changed a lot now for JVP , they have quite a backing from minorities , those who are persecuted do their gender , Caste , religous belief , political revenge and other injuice.

My father soend lot o his uncles campaign , but The UNP has no given has even a tiny opportunity , it was during CBK I had a fair chance of tenders in government cotracts and also banking facilities.
Rhis time my child who was 100% eligble for a job was unfairly used to work breaking tge back to complete undone work of about 2 years paid Rs.10,000 and later the CV got list msiteriously and the job was given to the party suporters who do not derseve .
There are UNP businessman who still owe me approx totalli g to about 7 million and further when Suneethra was Mayor one if my clients (an under world thug) arranged the then Female Engineer to hide my file for two years, I am.the first condominium applicant when it was frst introduced , I still woked hard , fought the battle and got it, he owes me 32 laks and not only destroyed me by defaulting , nearly kidnapped me uing a certain police officer during Tsunami , God bless my fellow lion a lady Criminal lawyer who intervened, if not I would be dead.

The JVP launched two insurrections. So did the ANC in South Africa; FARC in Colombia; PLA in Palestine; Hamas is still militant, but not within the community of Lebanon.
The chances of a JVP insurrection are pretty much over, 30 years on.
What about the violence against innocent people and killings unleashed by the UNP and SLFP regimes? remember the white vans etc!
Let us keep an open mind, and see what the JVP has to offer.
The JVP will do well by making a public self-criticism of the two insurrections. It is part of Marxist tradition.

If JVP has changes, what are the points of departures from their days of “Fire” except, obviously, giving up insurgency tactic to overthrow elected Gvts? Being a Marxist party, JVP cannot go too far beyond ten (10) specific goals set in 1848 Communist Manifesto written by Marx & Engels. Out of those ten items, six of them have become nearly commonsense in the modern world. Therefore, JVP must clarify their position on the remaining for namely: 1. Abolition of property rights (except for homesteads). 2. Abolition of Land rights. 3. No private education and 4. No private banking system!

If all four of them are also given up, then, the differences between them will boil down to other practical issues such as managing (a) inefficiencies, corruption & waste; (b) cutting down national debts; (c) foreign policy; (d) ethnic reconciliation including 13 A; (e) constitutional protection to Buddhism; (f) abolition of Prez etc.

Out of all of them. the most critical point will be the (b) b’cos, no matter what the true intentions are, all Gvt must pay bills at least maintain the status quo. This issue brings the all unpleasant memories of what happened right after marxist+ socialist regimes came to power not only in SL but elsewhere as well : Asking public to “tighten their belts”. SL experience came in 1970 when NM tried to implement totally nationalistic economic policy by cutting down all imports.

JVP may be honest as AKD claims. But haven’t we heard that song before from other politicians? JVP has many plus points such as (1) a committed membership (2) Good oratory (3) smooth and effective organization and so on.

But despite all that it has one big weakness – Acceptance by the other governments of the world. This means that that there will be no foreign investment. In their enthusiasm the JVP may claim ‘to hell with foreign investment’. But even the local investment will be equally affected.
.
We have to look at other small and not so wealthy countries to see what form of government we need. Take Vietnam, who made the US forces flee in the last stages of the Viet Nam war. A big come down for the mighty Americans.

But today Viet Nam has become a country where manufacturing of even hi-tech stuff is done. It has also managed to be the darling of the Americans. That is the sort of strategy we need.

Last but not least, AKD’s English is said to be even worse than Sirisena’s who became an international joker like Peter Sellers. Whatever one says, a good knowledge of English is essential for a Sri Lankan leader. While AKD’s English may be pathetic, his Sinhala speeches are even worse, where he sounds like an actor in a Shakespearean stage play where the actors speak in Sinhala.

But after reading last week’s Dr. Ranil’s Jaffna speeches, it seems both may not be candidates. Doctor Ranil still having an Idea to back Old Brother Prince, DSc, (War Crimes).
Dr. Ranil is in consideration of fulfilling the promise he gave to Vellala TNA party chief Sampanthar. He is looking for the Majority, to have voted for “Secret Solution”. So he is making deal for a National Unity Government with Old Brother Prince, DSc. As there is high possibility of SLFP coming under Brother Prince, it is hoped he can reattach SLFP with Dr. Ranil, in Yahapalanaya. The recent redshirts’ flock to produce Blood River in Galle Face Green is telling that Brother Prince DSc winning the Green elephant in the election is very easy. What basically Ranil did was divertered and fool the entire people , he let the Digana riot continue for days (Same as what his uncle did during 83 riots) we have to commend the President here , he forcefully took over the police from Ranil and ended the riot from spreading Islandwide.
Ranil kept faking the missing persons issues , the murder of journalists and even worse he humilatted poor Thajudeen’s remains, parts of his remains were ultimately found everywhere , it was worse than his murder as a Body of a Muslim and the pain and insult to family is unthinkable.
While clouding the people with such humbug , the common man’s grievences and justice was systamically supressed with limitless corruption at every level, I know a family where a person’s death has all the evidence of a preplanned murder and evidence of looting all the wealth of the said deceased , yet the suspect has gone scot free, who knows how many ordinary people are suffering the same fate of injustice due to curroption .
I wonder if any of the Candidates can offer a gaurantee on media to provide justice to the odinary without curroption interfering?
Lets see how the future President (whoever it be)and government address this issue .

If any one of The Candidates are sincere , they will assure return of full powers to the parliment , establish administrative system in every electroate so that they will have and enjoy everything what people in Colombo enjoy ,not having to suffer travelling all the way to colombo ,to get a new NIC, Passport, buy wholesale stuff , education ,health care , wholesalers and importers should have the same facilities.
Importing should be regulated by first doing a cimplete market survey of consumer demand in each electroate and a import permit issued with the quanity and quality allowed , its time to take steps to prevent Sri lanka becoming a dump yard all used items and low quality must be fully banned and taxes drastically reduced on brand new and quality items of everything branded goods myst be given full protection like in Singapore so it will attract top investors.
Introduce Food courts luke Singapore where you can find food of all ethnicities , discourage indepent restaurants .
make The Chief Minister of each province and a minister of each electroate answerable to one parliment .
get rid of provisional councils .

Has shown a strong sense of Obligation first to his duties toward his religion, clergy and institution while assuring freedom to other religions
Anura has spoken and people seem to have heard him clear and loud.
Sajith has worked hard to fullfil his father’s aspiration , built homes and done well so far.
But we need someone who will dare to take the nation to a complete different level.
First abolish presidency , abloish all other white elephant councils and bring in all the ministers and chairmans etc into one parliment spread development in every conrner of the island with development , develop local industry and farming, make every facility that colombo has available in every province , including business, , regulate the imports ( extremely important) encourage self employments ,education , healthcare, etc , this will also provide safety for the poor young female to remain in their homes and earn with dignity & create job oppottunities .
And basically I can only see such a change happening only through Anura of JVP.

First of all, for my vote, the JVP & AKD in particular, should acknowledge their violent past & apologise to all the families who lost loved ones during reign of terror.
The JVP, despite their socialist ideology, were quite happy to profit from unfair perks, such as, duty free vehicles which were paid for by the people of SL through direct & indirect taxation. So, apart from the rhetoric, have they outlined their strategy for reforms & ending corruption? Would AKD disclose his (& his family) wealth?
SL needs assistance from influential countries & foreign investment but has the AKD/JVP spelled out their foreign policy? MR was treated with contempt, particularly, by the British (despite the leader of the commonwealth propaganda) & apart from China (waiting in the side lines to take control of SL with a puppet regime in place like in Tibet & Hong Kong) or some African despots, MR has no international respect. Sirisena, despite his world tours, is hardly of any international standing either & no leader of an influential country has taken any notice of him. . SL foreign policy has been a disaster.. Can AKD, do any better? I am not referring to his alleged poor English oratory skills either, which, although helpful, is not crucial on a world platform.
Voting for AKD would be like changing the pillow when suffering from a head ache. So far, only GR has come out with some sort of a manifesto but his past record of corruption, abuse of power & thuggery doesn’t make him a suitable candidate. UNP hopeful, Premadasa jnr, will bring in another Premadasa era of just hype & result in the rise of different power brokers waiting for the gravy train. Th same questions asked from AKD, applies SP too. In this scenario, do we have any other choice?
