One Man Show

By Helasingha Bandara

Rajapaksa’s governance is a one man show. If he says yes, the bunch of puppets around him follow suit. Rajapaksa’s achievements are all one man miracles. “I won the war, I have developed the infrastructure and I have developed the economy and the people”. There is no space in his achievements for any other contributor. It is all his. It is all done by himself. There is no “we” in Rajapaksa vocabulary. Finally his election campaign too has become a one man show. Only Rajapaksa himself is speaking about his actions and reactions blowing his own trumpet. It could have been better if it came from someone else.

Mahinda Ampara 20 12 2014 MR FBHowever, there are three others speaking in the periphery: Wimal Weerawansa, Dullas Alahapperuma and Tissa Attanayake. The respect Wimal Weerawansa commands among the educated masses is obviously very low. To them he is an unprincipled showman who can lie like a Trojan to gain his own ends. The uneducated masses may be duped by his insincere nationalism, warped sense of patriotism and the entertainment value of his speeches. Dullas (what a fascinating name!)on the other hand, keeps on denying all charges against the government and picking up on some very insignificant comments by opposition leaders. Tissa Attanayake’s talks are about nothing but the party secrets that he has stolen while in the UNP. He has no understanding that the people have decided to give racism the red card. He still does not realise that giving equal opportunity to all communities and making them feel Sri Lankan is the only way forward. Double tongued Mahinda proclaims Tissa a patriot and Maithri a traitor for the same offence, desertion of the respective parties. An intelligent observer may conclude that Maithri and the others have defected with the full knowledge that they would lose all powers and perks come with them. In other words they were willing to lose. On the contrary Tissa sided with Mahinda with the full knowledge that his defection would be rewarded with a ministerial post, even temporarily. He did it for a personal gain.

Mahinda shows signs of fatigue. At Rathnapura rally, he seemed struggling to find what to say to the crowd. Someone behind him had to prompt him with subjects to talk about. Indeed he had nothing much to say other than the LTTE victory the old song and road development. The rest of the speech was all about entertaining the crowd by slandering the opponents, their wives and families, Chandrika in particular. His speeches have gone down hill to the level of fire work speeches (Mal Wedi Katha) devoid of substance.

The opposition on the other hand has raised substantial issues against MR; corruption and malpractices, state sponsored religious and ethnic intolerance, perversion of the criminal justice system, nepotism, economic mismanagement, the widening gap between the poor and the rich(unequal distribution of wealth), the provision of state protection to drug barons, plunderers, murderers, criminals, rapists and goons, blatant violation of election laws, criminal sabotage of opposition election campaign, abuse of state property and other resources for the regime’s own political campaign, erosion of media freedom, interference with the independence of the judiciary and so on. Rajapaksha himself or his fire work speakers do not address any of those accusations. He and his colleagues have written mundane speeches underestimating the political awareness of the common man and insulting the intelligence of the ordinary people.

Rajapaksa is alone. If Rajapaksa’s government can be attributed merits of good governance, there is no reason for almost all other parties to desert him to support the opposition. All friends had advised MR to make use of the golden opportunity presented to him and turn it into good use. He had the immense backing of all communities to become the immortal leader of this country. His arrogance and ego centric mind turned him to be the angry, bitter and foul-mouthed monster who even dares to physically assault people. This is unheard of any other leader in Sri Lanka’s post independence politics. Viewing him from any angle leads to the same conclusion. He is a one man show.

A spurious “secret agreement” purportedly signed between Maithripala Sirisena, the common opposition leader and Ranil Wickremesinghe the leader of UNP is put out in the glare of wide publicity by the Rajapakse mudslinging unit using the UNP dissident Tissa Attanayake. This fake agreement letter/document with signatures of Maithri and Ranil, has been prepared by the Rajapakse’s mudslinging team led by Dallas and Heeralu Herath along with former UNP General Secretary and Health Minister Tissa Attanayake.

      Amarasiri,

did you closely study how MR holds his speeches on the stage these days ?

as if making every effort to make the rural twisted about the rumours about his governance in the media these days. Rural masses cant get it easily becuse they are compelled to believe that the magics of MR eleminated LTTE terror in the country. Polls monitors themself declared that state resources have completely been used for Rajapakshe campaigns. What more we need to call it is Not going to be a free and fair election.

“Rural masses cant get it easily becuse they are compelled to believe that the magics of MR eleminated LTTE terror in the country.”

That is the reason for months I have been asking various “Sri Lankan” writers to write a brief common sense pamphlet in Sinhala, Tamil , and English, so that people, rural and urban, can read and comprehend the situation. Unfortunately, even in this day and age, a simple Common sense Phamplet was not produced by any “Sri Lankan” writer.

Trying to get “Sri Lankan” writers to write the Common Sense Phamplet, is like herding, cattle (Hartak). Thet keep making Baeeee, Baeee, and Baeee noise, only cattle (Harak) seem to understand. Such a Common sense Phamplet would have made a neutral but powerful impact, and got people to think about the Family dictatorship and democracy.

The close that has cone so far are the the Common Candidate Matripala Sirisena Election Manifesto, and the flyers and posters put up by JVP. Unfortunately, in both cases there is bias.

As a long and violent abuse of power, is generally the Means of calling the right of it in question (and in Matters too which might never have been thought of, had not the Sufferers been aggravated into the inquiry) and as the Medamulana Mahinda Rajapaksa hath undertaken in his own right, to support the Parliament in what he calls theirs, and as the good people of this country are grievously oppressed by the combination, they have an undoubted privilege to inquire into the pretensions of both, and equally to reject the usurpation of either.

Wimal Weerawansa is very uneducated man. His literacy level is very low and everyone can understand it very well through his language.

Most people are very foolish and Weerawansa foolishly display his foolishness and low level when he speaks. Weerawansa, SB, Jonny are very good for Mahinda because Mahinda Rajapaksa is also in a same boat.

Even Mahinda is not able to read the scripture when he makes speeches locally and internationally. He can not articulate properly.

    Sad….Sad….Sad…

Excellent exposure, written with credibility and restraint. It is in the next 12 days that desertions will reach the stage of an exodus. The show will be literally one then, as there will be no two to stand with him.

Doric De Sousa used to relate his experience as a speaker. When NM, Colvin spoke, the crowd was 3000. Late into the night when he began the crowd was 50. Within 5 minutes all had vanished. Only a cow remained. It was found tied to a tree.

One man show will be similar.Even the uniformed fraternity will think of defying orders from him and his brother. They will prefer to stand by the constitution and the law. It is wrong to think that the whole of the military is an unthinking mass, at the ready to pull the trigger with the first word of command.

Come January 9th, he will be left to himself and his fate.

Two men show I suppose! One with bounce and brag and other with pure intimidation!!

The armed forces will not turn against their own. He too is alone. His intimidation is through others. He is a bayagulla.

Only option they have now is what VP had – a Cyanide capsule or the white flag.

I find Tissa Aththanayake as a coward who needed money badly to support his childrens education in the UK and jump for a 200M and a 3 weeks of Ministerial post.

Ranil whould be ashamed and responsible for appointing this kind of low level animal for such a post like the Gen secretary of UNP which was help loyal professionals until that time.

Tissa is used by the regime to make bogus accusations and with the rural masses have only state media as coverage Tissa A can do a lot of damage.

Better not to talk about the Pannikkiyalage Wilalasena who changed the name to Wimal Weerawansha and try to get the part of the war victory and Lemon Puffed fast to death.

Dulles a US green card holder is doing what AJ Ranasinghe did with Ranasinghe Premadasa.

All these bastards should be thrown into the Beira come 9th Jan.

May be MR is gode bayya!
May be he does not have class!
May be it is a one man show!
May be there is no rule of law!

Interesting question is, Is this a problem to the majroty of Sri Lanka?

He is only responsible to the people and when people do not want him, They will throw him out.

Looks to me it is opposition that play gillmart,

Mangala had dinners with MR at his home before the election, was almost going to cross over.

Hirunika and mother used public funds delivered by Mahinda before turning against Mahinda, Flat? Presidential advisor post to her mother?

Maithree was not so much in maithree when his son and goons attacked person in the beach? Where was the rule of law then?

General Fonseka is another loose cannon, It was obvious UNP wanted him defeated during last election. He does not have a clean record either. (Of course What MR did to him is utterly wrong)

Arjuna, another disgruntled politician, Was he not accused of beating up a kid (http://www.sundaytimes.lk/010304/frontm.html)

    Hela Urumaya, A racist party

    SLMC, another racist party

Chandrika, Do I have to write? Waters edge!

Ravi, Court cases on exchange control violation?

Are these people really clean to deliver this disney land?

People need to be very cautious about the motives of this Kanda haliya.

List continues, Is any politician clean in SL?

Hi Gune; I agree with you 100% about the fact that it is hard to find a clean politician in SL.
Yet the fact is that the opposition is at least taking about cleaning the country while MR does not speak a word about that. Even at the last election he did not talk about curruption allegations. I guess it is because either he cannot counter argue or he does not want to clean at all.

We all can comment until the cows come home! Won’t make a damn of a difference on the 8th. The foolish and ill-informed Sri Lankan who still supports MR will vote for him on the 8th based on the following…

    1. He will be getting a motor bike for 50,000.
    2. His salary is going up by 10,000
    3. The Tamils and Muslims will be driven away.
    4. His children will not have to work too hard to succeed.
    5. Rajapakse never lies…is just slow in delivering on his promises.
