One More Avurudu To Go! – The UNP-SLFP Merger & The Mahinda-Ranil Choice

By Dayan Jayatilleka –

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

“Ranil Wickremesinghe’s…attempt at dragging a third world country, albeit ‘kicking and protesting’ into the 21st century with a neoliberal paradigm of economic and political structural reform has been found wanting and rejected. Cohabitation…has proved unworkable.” – Bradman Weerakoon, ‘Rendering unto Caesar’, Epilogue, p 386, 2004

Just one more Avurudu to go. Only one more Avurudu to hold on for. Next year is national election year. The Supreme Court has clearly and irreversibly decreed that elections at the apex of the political system mandatorily have to be held in the last quarter of next year, 2019. So there’s only one more Avurudu before the people liberate themselves before next Christmas, from this nightmare of incompetence, soft anarchy, decline and hardship.

In the view of Pohottuwa strategists, the SLFP has died and already been reborn as the SLPP-Pohottuwa. They think that ‘Maroon is the New Blue’. Meanwhile some ‘true blue’ SLFPers – most conspicuously the Rebel Sixteen–think the SLFP still survives, even after the Pohottuwa breakaway and recent election victory. They think there is a space for the more moderate SLFP, within the larger oppositional space, alongside the JO-SLPP and as an ally of it. They think that the Maroon and Blue are natural allies and the two banners can flutter together as did the two “satakayas” (shawls) in 1956. By contrast, some pale blue SLFPers think the SLFP can either survive while remaining with the UNP in government or as a subset of the UNP. They think that that the blue banner should flutter alongside the green or the blue should find itself a shade of aquamarine. So, is the SLFP blue to be dark blue (the Rebel 16), pale blue (MS) or aquamarine (CBK)?

From its first government, the SLFP had a Right, Left and Center—with CP de Silva being the leader of the SLFP Right until he defected to the UNP. Who will be the CP de Silva or Mahanama Samaraweera of 2018-2019, reviled or forgotten in the SLFP’s and broader patriotic political history?

If the so-called Unity government lives, and the SLFP lives within it, the SLFP dies. If the ‘Unity’ government dies, the SLFP lives. It is quite as simple a choice as that. The SLFP Right or ‘puppet faction’ that will merge with the UNP is politically doomed for many reasons, of which one is obvious: they are, for the most part, electorally marginal to the point of insignificance.  But there are far more important reasons for their inevitable fate of electoral extinction. Firstly, the SLFP rightwing puppets will have to opt for Ranil Wickremesinghe over Mahinda Rajapaksa, which is a choice in which no section of SLFP voters will accompany it. Those voters didn’t do so either in January or August 2015, and merely stayed home on the latter occasion. Secondly, the SLFP puppet faction that merges with the UNP will also be asking its voters to make another choice—that of Ranil Wickremesinghe over Mahinda’s nominee as Presidential candidate in 2019. The SLFP voters will ferociously reject that notion too.

Why will the SLFP voter, and indeed the overwhelming majority of Sinhala voters (including Sinhala Catholics), refuse to choose Ranil Wickremesinghe over Mahinda Rajapaksa’s choice? Every generation has a defining experience. That experience is usually sourced in what the country concerned and the world at large were going through during their lifetime. For my generation and the one just before and after mine, it was the Thirty Years War. We cannot but judge public personalities by the stands they took and the role they played during that great historical experience.

In our society today, the dividing line is that between those who prefer Ranil to Mahinda and others who prefer Mahinda to Ranil. It’s a split between “What’s Not to Like?” as concerns one’s favorite personality, versus “How can you possibly support that guy?” as concerns one’s pet peeve. My choice and critique of Ranil is not personal—I supported and worked with him from 1993 to early 1997, up until he (a) signed the Liam Fox agreement and (b) double-crossed his ally, partner and quasi-patron Sirisena Cooray (and the Premadasa Center) when the latter was arbitrarily detained on the accusation of attempted assassination, by President Kumaratunga.

When we look at Ranil and Mahinda, what do those of my generation see and remember? How did they conduct themselves at the height of their political achievement, against the backdrop of the greatest test our country and its leadership faced in our lifetime and possibly several hundred years, if not a much longer stretch, of this island’s history?

I can point to the opinions of credentialed others, non–Sri Lankans, as evidence of the correctness of my own choice as one who openly supported Mahinda Rajapaksa at the three Presidential elections he ran in—2005, 2010 and 2015.

This is how Prime Minister Wickremesinghe comes across in the account of an expert British analyst. Prof Paul Moorcraft is a former senior instructor at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst (perhaps the world’s most famous and prestigious military academy), and the UK Joint Services Command and Staff College. He writes:

“…On 20th December 2001 a Special Forces team was in place in the Vanni jungle. For once it knew for certain where the elusive Tiger leader was. The assassination team was due to strike on Christmas Eve. The team leaders were just ready to press the start button when they were countermanded, despite fierce intelligence arguments that Prabhakaran’s death would end the war…The Special Forces operatives were stood down temporarily in a safe house in Colombo. In one of the biggest intelligence own goals of the war, the house was raided by Special Branch police from Kandy. The highly secret operation was exposed. It was not a case of overzealous detectives…The heads of military and national intelligence were overridden when the police arrested the operatives and jailed them in Kandy. They were released after two weeks and, as a scapegoat, a middle-ranking police officer was suspended, temporarily. It didn’t end there: the intelligence leadership was accused of using the safe house as a base to assassinate the Prime Minister. Once again, the Tiger leader was unscathed.”(Paul Moorcraft, ‘Total Destruction of the Tamil Tigers: The Rare Victory of Sri Lanka’s Long War’, Pen & Sword Military, UK, 2012, pp. 38-39.)

By stark contrast, here is how Mahinda Rajapaksa is seen in retrospect by a top South Asian scholar, Prof MD Nalapat, Vice-Chair, Manipal Advanced Research Group, UNESCO Peace Chair & Professor of Geopolitics, Manipal University, Haryana State, India:

“…He or she [a leader] needs to be tough on certain issues, the way former President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa was when faced in 2009 with calls from the US and the EU to give LTTE leader Prabhakaran a safe exit from the trap that the Sri Lankan military had laid for him under the guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. Because of the Sri Lankan leader’s refusal to obey powerful countries used to deferential behavior from others, Mahinda Rajapaksa (with help from a few friendly countries) defeated the LTTE and ensured the end of terrorism in the island. As a consequence, the Sri Lankan economy started to improve and these days, the nightmare of violence and terror attacks that was the norm in the past is becoming a distant memory.” (https://pakobserver.net/lankan-pm-ranil-too-nice-for-his-job/)

And here is how Prof. MD Nalapat sees the Yahapalana leadership in contrast to Mahinda Rajapaksa:

“However, current President Sirisena and Prime Minister Wickremesinghe are seen by many as too eager to please the “international community” (CNN and BBC-speak for the US and the EU) by giving unprecedented concessions on sovereignty and self-respect to the US-EU combination who interfere in the guise of “ protecting human rights”. The concessions given by Sirisena and Ranil to Washington and its European allies will not save the Sri Lankan government from harsh demands to punish the Sri Lankan military for shaming NATO by defeating the LTTE in a way that NATO failed to do with the Taliban in Afghanistan and with Al Qaeda and Daesh in the Middle East, despite killing several tens of times more civilians than the Sri Lankan military did in its war with the LTTE.” (Ibid)

This reconfirms what Lord Meghnad Desai wrote about Mahinda Rajapaksa when he was re-elected in 2010. Meghnad Desai, who initially earned his reputation as an authority on Marxian economics but is much better known as a renowned economic theorist, Professor Emeritus at the London School of Economics and member of the House of Lords, likened the role of Mahinda Rajapaksa to that of Abraham Lincoln. In a piece entitled Unity in Diversity: Sri Lanka @62, Lord Desai wrote:

“Was Abraham Lincoln a war criminal? He took the US or at least its northern states to a war with the South, which resulted in the largest loss of lives in that nation’s history. The South was ruined and did not recover economically for at least 50 years.

The Black slaves were freed, but their condition remained miserable for another 100 years. Lincoln fought in the name of the Union, not for the abolition of slavery, which did not happen till halfway through the War, while the Southern Confederacy fought in the name of States’ Rights. Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederacy, remained a hero in the South as did General Robert E Lee. Lincoln remains a hero not just for the Americans but the world over.

I write this because within India’s neighborhood we have had a civil war, which has just ended. The man who led the nation to a victory has just been re-elected President. Yet he is widely reviled internationally and even within Sri Lanka. Except that a majority of his people re-elected him, Mahinda Rajapaksa has few friends in high places…

By some device or other, Rajapaksa, whom many underestimated, took the decision that he would end the war regardless of the loss of life involved. The carnage was incredible but in the end, Prabhakaran was defeated and killed. The LTTE’s gamble had failed.

It may sound callous to say this, but Rajapaksa would be regarded as the savior of his nation. Modern nations, especially post-colonial ones, value the integrity of their territory and do not entertain violent sub-nationalisms. India has had its share in Khalistan and in the many struggles in the north-east and continues to have problems in Kashmir. Yet, Indian citizens have allowed their government to ride roughshod over human rights as long as national integrity has been preserved…”

There is no single political personality in today’s Sri Lanka who can come close to the popularity of Mahinda Rajapaksa. There is no combination of personalities that cannot benefit from being partnered with him. With the right choice of Presidential candidate, it could be the most popular political and electoral combination that Sri Lanka has ever seen—the previous peak being JR Jayewardene and R. Premadasa in 1977.

When Mahinda Rajapaksa is no more, he will be elevated from folk hero to folk deity, for centuries to come, if not millennia. Yahapalana spokespersons may counter that Mahinda was defeated in January 2015, but his legend has grown and his iconic status elevated after that defeat—when the people realized just how much they missed him; just how much they had lost.

In 2019 the people will vote against a government that has been the most wretchedly unsuccessful ever in our post-independence history (with the runner-up being 2001-2003, the humiliating CFA years, when Ranil was Prime Minister earlier). The only ‘common program’ the SLFP has to negotiate with Ranil’s UNP is their shared electoral funeral arrangements late next year. To think otherwise is not tragic; it is pathetically delusional.

You know, this writer brings down the mean IQ of CT readership! There is a theory in advanced statistics to explain the phenomenon of Dayan Jayathillake. If you keep flipping a dice an infinite number of times, regardless of the times that you get a 6 as the number on the upturned face, the average value of all the attempts will be 3-4. This is called the regression to the mean. This is also why you must not allow people with limited rationality to speak too much/ infinite number of times. Everytime he/she speaks irrationally, it regresses the rest to the mean. Dr. DJ, You need to sit with yourself quietly. Really. And listen to yourself. And try not to laugh.

CT Editors please alert the police. There is a strong possibility this guy is enslaved by the Rajapakse’s.

Chained to his bed with a laptop and probably fed only when he churn out rubbish like this.

This guy is hallucinating and hearing voices may be due to starvation.

for example and I quote “…When Mahinda Rajapaksa is no more…”

he goes on to say… “he will be elevated from folk hero to folk deity, for centuries to come, if not millennia…”

is he penning the Mahavamsa for the next millennia; Mahinda as the next Buddha; ditching the current Mahavamsa as well as ditching Buddha?

    This guy is mentally degenerating

Alert the police immediately so that they can rescue him frm the clutches of the Rajapakse clan and admit him to Angoda for treatment

Dayan is testing waters. My expectation is comepletely a new group of politicians with some from the existing relatively not-corrupt and honest politicians who wish something good to Sri lanka. In the absece of that, If Maithripala is shrewed enough what Dayan Jayathilake says can be done and both Mahinda rajapakse and Ranil wickrmasinghe can be beaten if they come as one allience. I think that should be the best scenario.

I think, CBK ad Ranil was the most anti-Srilankan destructived govt was to Sri lanka. Ranil and Maithripala sirisena comes a close second. Ranil Tried more with Maithripala sirisena too but he could not do that many. He tried ETCA, A trade fact wth Singapore. another issue is what Ranil did with IMF/MCC and borrowing money from a Belgium Economic hitman. whether it is connected to the Centra Bank bond Scam we do not know. As JVP says, Sri lanka is being destroyed economiucally, culturally and financilly. I cannot believe what Certain articles for the english reader discusses. they simply think that Sri lanka should be HAVANA just before the cuban revolution. Mahinda Rajapakse had 100s of Advisors or consultants. HE had money,. He had over 100 ministers.Yet his only achievement is giving political leadership (that is also JHU was with him and His brother was an ex-army man and he di dnot have options because of the MAvil Aru, in other words, he was pushed to it by both sides). So, some how forces won the war. Other than that, He failed every way. Because, big projects were for corruptions, that is how people understand. Ranil, CBK shoul dnot come near the top any more. Mahinda rajapske, I know he does not come. but, he wants SLFP because there is a block vote there and JAckal Oppostion does not have that.

Some one was discussing the possibility that TNA presents their candidate,so the Tamil tribal vote is separated. Then Mahinda rajapakse and Ranil divides the sinhala vote. I think Muslim vote is also divided now. What would be the out come ?. IF yo do that, youhave screwed up that Majority of the Majority of 69% again. Even now 31% say Maithripala won because of Tamils and muslims. You know who Mahinda Rajapske and his Patriotism. What you want is only a diplomatic post.

This is as racist as it can get. He is dividing the sinhala nation.

However we dont hv a track record of joining up with a terrorist group which sought to divide this country.

Communism died 4 decades ago, when USSR melted down. Those, who fell asleep a little bit earlier before the fall of USSR, are still blabbering in dreams, not willing to wake up. Thero is not prepared to quote from Lee Kwan Yew, a man known as with strong resolve, and had said many things relevant to Lankawe, Thero is coolikku Maradikkirar(Beating chest for pay in funeral). Thero is exaggerating some communist professors’ academicals talents, beyond their biased outlooks, and bringing their blabbering as prophecy, which to last on the earth forever. These guys are learned imbeciles. When Marx or Lenin talked, they were at least intelligent people, for their time. The environment they lived is gone. The theories they postulated gone. All what Thero is doing is walking behind donkeys and collecting the dung, for coolie from the owner of the donkey. Thero has poor knowledge that he did not know American Rajapaksa, Abraham Lincoln, though negotiated with ICRC for Southern Hospitals’ coordinates but that time ICRC didn’t give it to him. So American Rajapaksa told his soldiers, it has to be only a fight within the two militaries, not the Northern military can go on rampage on Sothern civilians. Further USSR did not sell MIG to American Rajapaksa for carpet bombing or Cluster bombing or Poisonous Gas bombing or even Thermobaric bombing. (Thero is so easily programmable with none sense notions and he foolishly buy all that and start to market them as his proud inventions. The War Criminal Hero was so sacred even to go to parliament on the day of NCM. This guy is comparing him with Julius Caesar + Lincoln- What comedy!) .
Let us look at on the Lotus Bud game and then LG Election. Load Buddha is said to be sitting on Lotus Bud and meditating. This is Buddhists’ Symbol, so the election commissioner should have banned it, with banning all other Buddha’s symbols in election, because country has special status to Buddhism. UNP or SLFP did not contest Slap Party using a Buddhist symbol in election.

How Lotus Bud idea did come to Old Royals? It was not in an intelligent way. Lotus is a special flower in all Asian countries. Indian National flower is Lotus. In Lankawe it is reverenced. There wouldn’t be big town in West without few Chinese “Lotus Pond Restaurant”. They essentially map all of their businesses as Lotus if not “Lucky”. So China, when it wanted to build the loan tower, I named it Lotus tower, because if the loan failed it can capture and operate it without changing the name. Chinese are atheist and Lotus doesn’t remind any religious sanctity to them as much as for Sinhala Mahajan. Now, the tower’s opening is on talk, though delayed. That is where Old Royal grappled the “Lotus Bud” and marketed Slap Party as a holy entity. If Slap Party remain, and Chandrika not showing interest to rebuild SLFP, then the Lotus Bud has possibility of creating 2nd history on Mahanama’s Mahavamsa of Dutugemunu’s dynasty. But that is not really achieved pride, but a theft of opportunity done.

It was Ranil’s Master Mind to make GLP’s Slap Party to win in LG election. Ranil fooled UNP voters with a fake poll and discouraged their feeling of them to urgently go vote to save UNP. Then he took off all the candidate individual names from ballot papers and put the Lotus Bud on the ballots. So the entire Modaya crowd thought the Old King was personally competing in all of their electorates. None of them did know what kind of rowdies with less the 8th grade, were standing in their electorates. Further the country’s slow economy’s progress, suppress by loan burden, was easily loaded on Ranil as he had full-fledged effort to save Old Royals from his murders, rapes and lootings. PCOI report was publicized but PRECIFAC report was hidden.

After all, Ranil set up the election date to match with UNHRC sitting and left Old Royals to campaign against Secret Solution, without countering. Then, after that all, Slap Party got only 44%. If Thero wants to predict GLP Parties election victory IN EP election, then Yahapalanaya has to promote that party as the way it did in LG election.
That all is aside because we don’t know if Old Brother Prince can stand for EP election and if that can be not on America’s sponsorship. If he has to stand for America, then Thero’s Communist Propaganda all are only mirage. In that case, Old Brother Prince will have to listen to America, and this time, it’s not going to be the easy way Yahapalanaya hoodwinked Obama and John Kerry. If China is not letting Lankawe to get along with those decisions, then America will find Gas Bombs in Lankawe too. Thero is still keep writing these bogus, fabricated stories because he still in the opinion that his cheating at the UNHRC in 2009, worked and the entire world has gone fooled. He is not able to see the truth yet.

Let’s look from where Thero is coming with Aluth Avurudu idea. Thero is camouflaging him as current top writer and him hiding behind the last week’ Aluth Avurudu, The Sinhala New Year. Let see the Psychology behind this.

The Lotus Bud ants’ owner is only a spent bullet, cannot stand on any election on his own- The Lotus Bud ants that appeared in the LG won’t match the elephant even if they are uplifted high by their master. So, they, in the election, not on their masters’ feet, but have to stand on their own feet. Here is a problem Thero fails to understand. Further, the War Crime Hero Fame fades, but what doesn’t fade is real pounding on racism drums. So Old King did know that it will work for him LG election. But when he ran back to Medamulana after losing election, there he announced that “Tamils defeated me”.

    0

Anybody remember Sampanthar’s speech after election will remembers freshly that he saying if Old King defeat the Secret Solution, Tamil Eelam will flower out from Lotus Bud. Yes, Old Royal dropped out the War Crime Heroism, the “UN Electric Chair” with 2015, and went for “Do you want one country or do you want two counties”; that is back on pure racism. Unlike Thero, they understand that Heroism fades and Racism doesn’t. They didn’t make the UN Electric Chair joke, because this is no longer like searching Lamborghini in the flour pot for Aluth Avurudu fun & games. Thero doesn’t get it why is it so, so he is boosting comparing Ranil with Old King’s War Crime Hero Personality out of proportion.
Last week President Trump wished Lankaweyans on their New Year. He, after all his rhetoric and his opponents’ rhetoric, went and attacked Syria. Then he wished the Lankaweyans for their New Year. Though it is only an annual formality, this year, he appeared to be conscious of whom he was wishing and Lankaweyans too were in conscious who was wishing them. Whether Syria attack made any change there or not but it has wakened few in Lankawe. Though Thero is in Communism coma, he is also one in them, to be rattled by the noise. That is why he is writing this. ” A tactical diplomatic approach is necessary to avoid unnecessary missiles. ‘Doing our best’ is also necessary. Sri Lanka as a country or as a people (including you!) perhaps is already in the “bad guys” category.” – From a learned professor of Lankawe

Neither we nor Thero do know if Slap Party would place an EP candidate, and if it will be based on the lost 2015 Theme “ The War Heroinism”. They cannot bang a lot on Racism too, because this is EP election; minorities decide the EP. After starting the Kandy Riots, they pretended like they were the one controlled it. We don’t know if Slap Party candidate will have even a sturdy platform to stand on!

Dayan, SLFP is weakened beyond redemption, people don’t recognize the current SLFP as the populist party that SWRD brought forth (heck most SMART phoners will ask who SWRD is), Maroon has to be the new Blue because latter has turned to a sickening seafoam, did MR plan this all along in building the Lotus Tower or was it just a very clever after thought to adopt the Maroon and the Pohottuwa,?

“SLFP is weakened beyond redemption, people don’t recognize the current SLFP as the populist party that SWRD brought forth”

You should have known this long ago any party that is based on empty promises,
void of principles, …………. a concocted ideology which simply orchestrate bigotry and racism, imposed discriminatory policies, bogus attempts to preserve Buddhism (chapter II), unaccounted for war crimes, …………….. will have to lose its “magic”, weakened, and die a slow death.

I don’t see any new actors in SLPP nor any progressive fresh idea’s, it is just re-branding of the old trash, with the same old racists and same old tactics, more bigotry, more racism and definite fascism and more war criminals in public, …….

Go sit down and review what SLFP’s contribution over the past 67 years of its racist existence?

OMG!!! what [edited out]. MR will go down in the annals of history as a murderer and crook who allowed his family to rob the country blind and destroyed democracy and human rights in sri lanka. Contrast him with Ranil who has been a great leader who has done things the way statesmen behave. Comparing Rajahora with Abraham Lincoln is a profanity which will make Lincon’s turn in his grave. This suck will do anything to get some reward from the Fukshas and what he forgets is that his idol and master will be languishing in jail before the next election and once he is convicted of abuse of power and corruption the Fuksha will be prohibited from contesting the elections. DJ, keep dreaming [edited out]

” Comparing Rajahora with Abraham Lincoln is a profanity which will make Lincon’s turn in his grave. “

Thero said in Geneva, in May, 2009 the war as Zero Casualty Humanitarian Rescue Mission Operation. (Old King said to UN SG that he would attend to “Accountability and Responsibility”. He,further promised to India to resolve Tamils’ Problems”. Thero mixed these cheating with his lies to fool UNHRC and called the May, 2009 resolution as Lanakwe proud Achievement in UNHRC).

If one sow fruit tree seeds, that one and others get to eat fruit. If one sow poisonous tree seeds, that one and others end up eating poison. What Thero sow in UNHRC in 2009 is the one Lanakwe awaiting to reap soon. With many other traits, one which contribute to democracy last in West is, if one of their statesman make a mistake to the people he/she served, he/she come to public and confess their mistake and take responsibility, leave the job and go home. If Thero come out and confess his blunders of May 2009, then and there Ranil and New King will invent who they are and would do the right things from their seats.

The writer gets his facts correct and he has given expression to what is in the minds of many Lankans. Wickremasingh is what Jimmy Carter was to the US, a simple minded moron who took the US to the lowest level of its influence while the whole world watched in amazement Americans being taken hostage and kept in captivity by a bunch of fanatic Moslem mullas. As the writer says, Rajapaksa is the Abraham Lincoln of Lanka, except Rajapaksa no doubt has the potential to be elevated to the level of a deity at some point in the future. Rajapaksa must support his brother, Gotabya as the nominee for President from his party, and campaign vigorously for him in 2019. Gotabya will not get any votes whatsoever from the Moslem fanatics, which is now literally every single Moslem in Lanka.
However, Gotabya must realise that this may be the last election where he can win despite the Moslem vote. The apocalypse of Moslem majority by sheer breeding like vermin and population explosion will hit Lanka as early as 2025 and thereafter there will be no going back. No government will be able to win without the Moslems and the only option would be to acquiesce to the Moslems and form a government with them. In 2050 or earlier Lanka will have the first Moslem President and shortly thereafter Lanka will rename itself as the Islamic Republic of Lanka. Those who are reading this article will be all dead and gone by then, some of them denying this truth all the way to their graves.
