Opposition Leader Need Not Be Changed Even In An All-UNP Government: Cabinet Spokesperson Rajitha

Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Rajitha Senaratne said that the Opposition Leader’s post need not go to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) in the event that the United National Party (UNP) forms a government on its own.

Rajith Senaratne

Responding to a question posed by a journalist at the weekly cabinet press briefing, Senaratne said ‘it is good to have a Tamil person as the Leader of the Opposition.’

He added that doing such things (like having an SLFPer as Opposition Leader) was like ‘JR Jayewardene removing Amirthalingam,’ which he claimed ended with Prabhakaran becoming the Leader of the Opposition.

While R Sampanthan of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) is currently the Opposition Leader, he was appointed in a context where the UNP and SLFP formed a unity government where even those who opposed it (the Joint Opposition) were considered to be SLFPers and therefore technically not members of the Opposition.

However, if the UNP went solo, the SLFP would have the largest number of MPs outside the Government.

May be only the Lankans can understand these logic. I tried explaining this to a local doctor where I live, and he looked at me as though I have gone crazy and needed immediate medical attention. There are members in the government who are also in the opposition and in a newly formed third party. It is as good I being a doctor in three different countries at the same time???? ( impossible even with tele -medicine). To tell you the truth there are times in medical school I use be in the theater ( not the hospital one) and some one else have called attendance in proxy. But the Lankan logic is truly a miracle.I guess these individuals must be receiving overtime salary for putting extra work!! In simple terms it is a scam/sham.Long live Lankawe.

Native Vedda: You asked “WHEN”. The answer: The DAY, when the all the PEOPLE , RESOLVE, ACCEPT, DECIDE to be no one else other than to be SRI LANKANS. The FIRST STEP towards that, must be to condemn and discard all the political parties based and formed on the foundation of ethnic and religious and forced all others remaining to accept to SRI LANKAN identity for all the people.

Could you define Sri Lankans and SRI LANKAN identity.

I have asked the same question many times before none would or could define it. Please try yourself for once.

Federal Party was for federalism, would that make the party a racist one?
SLFP was formed on racist ideology and remain so until now.
UNP party commenced as unity party later adapted and acted racism as its core ideology.
The LSSP, CP, JVP, ………………. have socialism as its core value. However they acted and acts differently for all intent and purposes.

      Aren’t you bluffing?

Any one holding a Sri Lankan Citizenship is a Sri Lankan. Anyone that gave-up their citizenship is of Sri Lankan origin but not Sri Lankan.

Why does a senior cabinet minister want to convey his opinion as to who should be the leader of the opposition.
In any democratic system of governance, the process of electing the leader of the opposition is bestowed on the opposition MPs. However, the last parliamentary appointment of the “leader of the Opposition” was done in an undemocratic way with the Speaker being biased in his decision making.

The present speaker in my opinion, has contradicted many traditions of parliamentary procedures, due to his weak character as a decision maker.
The current speaker is a puppet of RW, and always dances to RW’s rhyme.

Karu J, used to be a major influence in the past but alas, he has lost his touch since of late ( late since 2015). The erosion of the democratic traditions in the upper house began since. ( and Karu J should be held responsible for the degradation of of the parliamentary etiquette that was esteemed to be held high).

The lowest ebb of parliamentary rights being abused was, when out of frustration RW shouted out the slogan “Kauda Hora” and then he encouraged his followers to respond with “Mahinda Hora”.
Karu J just stood and watched!

On an alternate perspective, I simply cannot fathom such a prime minister being the head of the legislative high command of our country.

Native Vedda: The term “Sri Lankan” has been defined many times by many people and I too agree to define it as ALL HUMAN BEINGS living in that land of 25, 000 sq.miles named Sri Lanka. I now know, you have a “difficulty” and so “refuse” to accept it and that is no “Bluffing” to say it.

Thanks, however though it is a necessary condition but not a sufficient condition.

You could expand your 12 words general definition into further detailed one, breaking it down into various identifiable sentences, paragraph, points, pages, — political or otherwise as to how you would encompass all the good things about being Human including rights, responsibility, aspirations, how to preserve individual identity, dignity , safety, security, right to own assets, right to movement, right to speech, right to life, right to education, right to justice, right to habitat and livelihood, …………………………. language rights, religious right, …. right to have a secular constitution without the interference of theocracy, right to deport bigots, racists and fascists, ………… Unity in Diversity, ………….. Rainbow coalition, ………..

Please do not refer me to JVP’s manifesto or its 5 lessons, Karl Marx’s Das Capital, Mao’s Red Book, Muammar Gaddafi’s Green Book, or from the pages of SJ’s blame the victims, ………………………….

This is about SLFP hybrid faction who voted in support of the NCM along with JO:
    .
Despite my other comments, on the funny side, I think President has cunningly identified SLFP MPP who have double deals with MR. He might even let them sit with JO. Who knows may be he wanted to remove them from Ministerial positions for some time. If so, I say wow. Give a high five Mr. President. :D :D :D
The list of 16 are notable turncoats who changed their stance from time to time. Their aim is clearly the next general election. They want to be re-elected. Wait, wait. we know what to do. Mahinda’s Satakaya won’t be enough to get elected to Parliament next time. There will be whole lot of new people challenging the present lot and we will make sure they be elected. Country is yearning for new faces, guys. Go home!
    .
I wish all Sri Lankans a very happy Sinhala and Hindu New Year! Forget about differences. Get together and enjoy the festive season practicing Sinhala and Hindu New Year rituals, customs and participating in cultural activities.

It is not a Hindu New Year as all Hindus do not celebrate this New Year but a Tamil New year that the Sinhalese that the Sinhalese are celebrating and calling Sinhalese and Hindu New Year. Even the so called sweets and customs practiced are from once Tamil Kerala and Tamil Nadu

He He He Sinhala New Year ??????

There was no such new year for Sinhalease 80 years ago having noticed that Tamils celebrate this Asgiriya and Malwatte Ayotullahs ordered Sinhalese to follow …dont parade your ignorance here.

Similarly Kandy Perahara was initially started as a Hindu Festivel. following the protest by monks from Siam( now Thailand) converted to a Sinhala festivel

Indeed Singalese must celebrate ONAM festival in Kerala where their ancestors arrived by Kallathonies and still follow Kerala ( then Tamil Sera Kingdom ) food ..traditions ..dress etc.etc.,

Mahavamsa is a imaginary comic book without any historical or scientific evidence about the origin of Sinhalese only modays can believe this story about criminal Vijaya and his 700 thugs came from Orissa .

Rajitha, Don,t think everyone in this country is an utter fool or you could con people with any nonsense using you excellent oratorical prowess. In Westminster system opposition is the alternative government and the opposition leader is the alternative Prime minister. Is TNA the alternative government of Sri Lanka or Mr Sambandhan the alternative Prime minister?

    Rajitha is right.
And he should be our next presidential candidate because he is not racist.

If the 16 rogues sit in the opposition the chances are the Leader of the Opposition position will be removed from TNA. In that case TNA should sit with the Government to keep the existing balance in the Parliament.

Yes ! Sampanthan is a good choice to continue as the leader of the opposition eve if there is a change in the government, so that he can continue flirt with the government and cheat the Tamils and the Sinhalese together. Sumanthiran could be a good deputy so that Sampanthar could place his arm on the shoulders of his deputy.

If the 16 SLFP members sit in the opposition, President should remove and replace those who were appointed from the list immediately and appoint new MPs and get those new MPs to sit with the Government.

Native Vedda: I do not intend to write a THESIS on the topics you mentioned. Further more I am least concerned on those “Pandiths” of olden days and political dogma of varying political parties – mainly based on ethnic , religious, communal ideologies. I only request you to re-read my original comment, in which I raised a question: “Why a Tamil is not qualified to be the PM” and “Is it a disqualification to be a Tamil to hold the position of PM?” Sink DEEPLY into the thinking behind those questions and I am sure you will find all what you NEED to KNOW.

TNA is with the government since its formation, although they sit in opposition benches. So question of forming alternative govt and PM doesn’t arise here.

Doesn’t matter they did not take any ministerial posts, but they got STF protection, tax free car permits , millions for keeping quite on budget proposals , official residence etc. Nowhere in the world this sort of model or system we could see under parliamentary democracy.

This reinforces the fact that any one from SLFP/UPFA should be disqualified from holding the post of opposition leader as they are in control of the parliament.

“President Maithripala Sirisena on Thursday suspended parliament until next month in a shock move amid a deepening power struggle between him and his unity government’s prime minister. “

I think Sampanthan Aiyya knows things better than what is portrayed. His words to the effect that resurgence of the “flower bud” is the beginning of separatism speaks volumes. As long as he has a place in the National Politics at least as the Leader of the Opposition he can be a bit mellowed. This, even the “Good Dental Surgeon” knows and that is why he wants the continuation of the status quo. Wishful thinking is one and the reality is another to which Sampanthan Aiyya is more prepared than anybody else.
